CS5 preferences

CS5 will not save preferences. Instead I get a window that says
"Could not save preferences because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the get info
command in the Finder to unlock the filer change permission on the file or enclosing folders." I tried everything I know. Even uninstalled and reinstalled the program. Any help will appreciated.
Thanks Steve

Thank you.
I have tried the updater and like you say it is useless.
I am not quite sure how to do them manually but I will do some research.
I have 2 computers, the Mac Book Pro which we have been working on and a I Mac. I had them both
at the Apple store 3 days ago and we could not fix the problem on the MB Pro. Both have the same OS X 10.9.5 and both have PS 12.0. What is interesting is that the MB Pro is the only one with the problem. The IMac works perfectly.
I went into Finder and checked sharing & permission and I have read and wright privileges. But above the window it says "you have custom access" not “you can read and wright” like in your example.I did not about Command 3 and 4, very cool thank you.
Thank you again as I am learning a lot.

Here's the link to the Photoshop 12.1.1 update for Mac (if you have CS5.1) or 12.0.5 (if you have Photoshop CS5):
Security update | Photoshop CS5, CS5.1
Just download the applicable update, double click on the resulting .dmg (Disk Image) to mount the installer on your desktop as if it were a disk, and double-click on the installer file to start applying the update.
There are instructions on that linked page.

  • Bridge CS5 Preferences = Unknown error

I recently renamed a users shortname from firstnamelastname to firstname.lastname.
Since then, whenever the user opens Bridge CS5 and chooses Adobe Bridge CS5 > Preferences the "Unknown operating system error" pops up.
I have deleted the preference file, reset with CMD + OPTION + SHIFT at application launch, tried with a different user account and uninstalled then reinstalled the suite.
Note, Photoshop CS5 does not suffer the same error when opening its' Preferences.
Is there anything else I can do?

No, the firstname.lastname change is just the local user account.
This confuses me a bit, how were you able to change the short name that appears in the textfield of the 'Home' icon of your user account. As I recall this has never been possible after hitting OK when creating this user.
And I'm with Curt on this. Since Mac is Unix based with OSX it is not wise to use 'strange' characters in filenames but especially forward slash (/) and dot (.) are Unix command specific and often can lead to confusion and malfunction. When a dot is placed in a file or folder name unix reads the part after the dot as an extension and tries to match this with an application to open. (pardon me for the clumsy explanation, I'm a nitwit in this matter, but I think this is somewhat the bottom line of it...)
You could use a divider or underscore (_) instead but that is up to you.
First try to change the name back and if no luck try an Archive and Install option from your original Install disk. This leaves all the files and applications untouched but creates a fresh library and makes a back up of the old one.
Nevertheless be sure to have a back up of your files and serial numbers (but you already had that, right?? )
Use the Archive and install and afterwards use the OSX combo update to update your OS to the latest.
It will take you less then an hour.

    Hello Todd,
Thanks for replying. My main concern is for the 3 preferences that are in bold. I was hoping that you (or someone) could suggest the best
settings for these three preferences based upon my PC specs.
If this machine was yours, how would you tweak these three preferences?

  • Indesign cs5 and photoshop cs5 preferences installed as one.

I have Indesign cs5 and adobe photoshop cs5 extended installed in my copmputer. I see those two programs as the largest installed applications in my computer. I just wonder that maybe some of the preferences of Indesign cs5 and photoshop cs5 are the same. I am thinking that these files are the reason why the two applications are very large.
For example the Adobe Bridge cs5, i think that Adobe Bridge is installed two times in my computer. One from the installation of Indesign and one is from the Photoshop.
I just want to know if there is a way to install the two applications having their preferences installed once and both applications could use them. I think in that way i can save a free space in my hard drive. Any help would be much appreciated.

You cannot save space on your hard drive by combining portions of these programs, no.
Their "preferences" take up a very small fraction of the space used by these programs.
Furthermore, they already have an extensive set of common (shared) files that are used by both programs that are installed outside the program directories for each program.
    Under Windows, that is C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe. For Mac, /Library/Application Support/Adobe.
    But no.
Also, hard drives are incredibly cheap. If you're worried about the size of these programs, you are doing something wrong and you're not going to be able to use them efficiently anyhow. In particular, effective use of photoshop needs many more times the size of the program in free space.
It's probably time to go and out buy several hundred GB (or some TB) of space.

  • PS CS5 Preferences re-sitting

    Ref: Photoshop CS5
I can use photoshop for several weeks then out of the blue it comes on with all my preferences gone. Especially the way it handles files when opened. I hate have files opened in the folder formate and the docking of files.  I have changed under preferences, interface where when opened it does not do this.
Like I said out of the blue it opens up just like it would if it was a brand new program. Everything else is the same except I lose all my styles and they have been reset to default.
    Any help appreciated.

I have that same problem.  Been there for years.  Happens maybe once every 3-6 months.  I have never figured out what causes it.   Changes scratch drive, file handling, mouse settings.

  • Where is CS5 preference to use new window and not tabs?

    Hi,
I prefer a new window rather than lose screen space to tabs.
Is there a preference somewhere to open new document in new window and not as a tab?
    Thanks,
    Garrett

You can use the "Float in window" command (available in Window | Arrange menu) - but this will work once you have created a new doc.

  • Have to keep resetting Photoshop CS5 preferences

    Hello,
I'm running PS5 on Mac OS Mountain Lion. I'm having to reset the preferences file a lot at the moment, as some of the presets are going missing from the drop down box. This is happening in the Levels adjustment dialog box. So, when I reset the preferences file the drop down presets that come with PS5 then reappear. Does the preferences file keep getting corrupted? If so, why? How can I mend this??!
    Thanks

    Thanks for the reply...
The drop down options are the levels presets that come with PS5 these go "missing" and the only options left are default and custom. The presets files are still in the right folder in the application folder, but don't seem to load up into the program itself. I can't work out if it's only after startup or during a Photoshop session....
The only thing that solves it is deleting the preference file on startup...this obviously is a not ideal as I'd quite like my preferences to remain. I've also reinstalled ps5 ( without uninstalling....ie just running the installer over the too of the existing installation)' but this hasn't worked.
I'm not using any third party plugins.
I can load the levels presets from the levels presets folder, but in the drop down box it appears as though they are a preset that I've created myself, not one of the levels presets that are included with PS5

  • CS5 - Preference file is corrupt and has been reset.....

EVERY single time I re-open Illustrator, I get this message that my "Preference file is corrupt and has been reset to default, and the old one was backed up...."
    C'mon!!!  What gives???
Why does this program version have so many issues???
Anyone know why this may be occuring??
    Thanks good people!

I'm having a similar issue.  My preferences file get corrupted over and over again.  Super annoying.   For example, according to my preferences, labels are supposed to be shown when doing drawings or rotating.  Then it decides to just stop with the labels.  It's happened numberous times and the only fix is to reset my preferences by deleting the preferences file.
Also, along the same lines, I have a certain color book swatch panel that I have the 'persistant' option checked.  Yet I have to find it and re-open in everytime I open Illustrator.
The issue comes from Adobe working to hard to get worthless CS 5.5 out and ignoring fixes for their programs.  It's BS.

  • Viewing & Opening Files in CS5

This is a trivial Photoshop issue but it's been bugging me.
I use CS5 on WindowsXP. My CS5 has been updated.
When I am in CS5 and I go to open a file, the user interface window opens, and the folders and contents are shown in "List" mode.
However, say I click on "My Documents" and then "My Pictures" all of the folders change to "Thumbnail" mode. But the thing is, I don't want it to change. I want to stay in "List" mode. So then I have to change the viewing mode from "Thumbnails" back to "List".
And once I've changed it, it doesn't stay that way. If I continue working in CS5 and open another file in "My Documents>My Pictures" it reverts to "Thumbnails" mode again even though I already changed it to "List" mode.
This must be an Adobe issue as opposed to a Windows issue. In XP I have my Folder Options already set so that how I view one set of folders determines how every set of folders is viewed.
I've looked through CS5 Preferences and this "File viewing" isn't listed so it doesn't seem as though it can be changed within CS5.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to set the File Viewing Mode in CS5 to "List" and keeping it there?

I believe it really is a Windows XP issue.  The File - Open et. al. dialogs are part of Windows Explorer, and as I recall XP does not remember your preferences individually in those dialogs.
I believe you're seeing a difference between your "general" folders and My Pictures because of the folder type.  You may be able to influence it into using List view for all by right-clicking on the folder, choosing Properties, then Folder Type (this is all from memory; I'll boot up an XP VM in a little while and check).
Beyond trying the above, you might want to consider upgrading to a more modern operating system to overcome this issue.  Work was done even back in Vista to improve the standard dialog usability, including remembering your preferences.  Interestingly, Windows 7 got a little better (it doesn't seem to "forget" them any more), though Windows Explorer in general has been made if anything less configurable.
The funny thing is that people more often want to change the XP dialog default from List view to something else (e.g., to Thumbnails or Details).

  • Unable to open camera raw 6.0 from Bridge CS5

I just Installed photoshop CS5 and I am unable to view and open my NEF files in Camera Raw from Bridge CS5.  It worked perfectly fine with Bridge CS4 and Camera Raw 5.1.0.30.  Anyone has any suggestion other than using my old Bridge CS4. I have mas OS X 10.6.3 installed on my computer.
    Many Thanks

I have de-installed and re-installed the entire photoshop CS5 and it is still the same... I am at lost and using my old CS4 bridge for now.
You'll need to confirm that the Camera Raw plug-in was correctly installed so that both Photoshop _AND_ Bridge can access it. For Mac the only correct location that is should be installed is: the root level Library (not the user Library). Inside of the Library look at Application Support/ Adobe/Plug-ins/ CS5/ File Formats/ Camera Raw.plugin
If the Camera Raw plug-in isn't there and/or any of these folders are not there then Camera Raw is not properly installed...if Camera Raw is correctly installed then you may need to do several things...first, in the folder you are trying to see raw images, go up under Tools/ Cache/ Purge Cache For Folder. If that doesn't work you may need to trash your Bridge CS5 preferences. To do that, hold down the Command/ Option/ Shift keys while double-clicking the Bridge app icon and choosing Reset Preferences...
If Camera Raw was not properly installed, sorry, can't help you...you may need to contact Customer Service for installing tech support.

  • Why can't I do batch actions from CS4 or CS5 Bridge now when I could before?

Something has changed in my functions for doing batch actions in Bridge.  In CS5 Bridge I try to do a simple batch action of saving a DNG file as a jpg and closing the file.  When I attempt this I get a message saying 'The command "Save" is currently not available.
I try to do the same thing in CS4 Bridge.  I go to the Tools menu and look for Photoshop in the drop down menu but it's not there.  This is how I do batch action processing with my Windows version of CS4 Bridge.  I am confused about what has changed when I was able to do batch actions routinely in CS4 and CS5 Bridge on my Mac.

Batch using tools menu from Bridge to reach Photoshop should work as expected in both CS4 and CS5. If not then there is something wrong on either your system or install.
Go to Bridge CS5 preference and look for the section Start Up Scripts and see if there is still a Start Up Script for Photoshop CS5 present and with a checkmark in front for activation. If not try first to restart bridge holding down option key and choose refresh preferences. This should retrieve the original Start Up scripts again.
If your command save as is not available check the action and see what the save path for that acton is. If it is a copied action from an other system changes are that it still contains the save path for the old drive and if the script can't find it it provides a warning message.
Also check if the drive you save to has both read and write permission.

  • Missing Memory in CS5?

    Hi to all!
On my Mac Pro I had CS4 and since two days aside also Photoshop CS5 installed.
Since I like to use my Nik plug-ins I changed the Bit mode of CS5 to 32 Bit. After I removed the Selective Tool of those Plug-ins it seems everything was working fine.
Later on I had a problem with the Trash in the Finder (all was deleting immediately), but I was able to solve that issue also.
But now to my real question:   I have a 2009 Mac Pro model with 4x2 GB Ram memory. In the Photoshop CS5 Preferences in Performance I can read:
                            Available RAM  2100 MB
                            Ideal Range  1155 - 1512
    I set it to          1577  MB  (75%)
In Photoshop CS4  I can read the following:
                           Available RAM  3072 MB
                           Ideal Range  1689 - 2211 MB
    I set it to         2319  MB  (75%)
How come that both different versions of Photoshop seems to recognize different amount of RAM?
(As far I can remember yesterday I saw in the CS5 preferences a much higher value of available RAM written)
Since I have 8 GB RAM installed, why this is not recognized?
Does this has any impact on the real performance? Does this has anything to do because I switched from 64 BIT to 32 BIT operating?
Thanks for any guidance, I'm puzzled and curious
    Michael

    Thanks a lot, Chris!
At least I know now that everything seems to be working fine.
So when I like to use CS5 including using the Nik Plugins I have to accept the available RAM below 2 GB.
Is this normally enough RAM, or should I seriously consider to buy more RAM?
(I'm using no 3D features, just moderate photo editing, but with large 16 Bit files)
So in order to have at least the double of available RAM, I would have to upgrade my Mac Pro to 16 GB, right?
    (Quiet costly? Any recommendations?)

  • Installed CS5, now I can't administer a site using CS4

I installed CS5 recently. My client still has CS4. She recently changed her ftp pass codes. I updated the connection with Contribute using CS5, but she can not access the site and gets an error message "This site is now being managed by a newer version of Contribute". I cleared the preferences in CS5 and am trying to re-establish the connection for her using CS4...but everytime I do I get half way through the set up process and get an error message saying that the site is already being managed by a newer version of Contribute (even though I have cleared the CS5 preferences in the Library and that site doesn't exist anymore on CS5 version).
How can I still use the older software for my client who doesn't have CS5? Thanks. Melissa

    1) If the site is adminitered by newer version of Contribute then you can't administer the site using lower version of Contribute.
    2) In the Compatibility is chosen as Transition Mode then the users in lower version can connect, if the mode chosen is Compatibility then they can't connect.
Please refer to the blog http://blogs.adobe.com/contribute/2009/09/compatibilty_transition_mode.html for more information.
