CS5 Question re: selection edges

In CS5 Photoshop View / show / "selection edges" stops being active - not sure why or how to turn it back on

Does pressing Ctrl)cmd)+H make the selection edges (marching ants) visible?
Do you have Selection Edges enabled under View>Show>Show Extras Options?

  • Can't see selection edges as I draw them.

    When using selection tools (Marquee, lasso, etc.) I cannot see the selection edges as i draw them. After completing a selection "blind," I see the selection using the Marquee tool - and can see the selection edges after double clicking when using the lasso tools. I've tried using the selection tools on several different files - jpegs, .NEF, and TIFF.
    In View/Show, the Selection Edges option is grayed out, so I cannot activate it. Under View, "Extras" is checked. Under View/Show/Show Extras Options, everything is checked including Selection edges.
    I was never too good at using the selection tools when i could see them (in CS, CS2 and CS3), but I'm even worse trying to use them "blind." Appreciate your help...

  • Where did my selection edges go??

    I am using Photoshop CS4 and for some unknown reason my object selection edges (the little squares that appear when you select and object that allows you to grab the object, scale it down etc). I know you go to View > Show > Selection Edges..buy my "Selection Edges" option is gray..I cant select it I tried re-setting Photoshop preferences but it didn't fix the problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    You are getting confused with two different things… your terminology is not correct
    In your move tool (V key) choose "show transform controls" - this will give you the resize handles you are looking for. This is not a selection. A Selection is a physical pixel area on the canvas. This selection can be altered without affecting areas outside it - thats what the word "Selection" means in Photoshop.
    The screenshot you have shown will only look that way if you have no selection active. Make a new selection using one of the Marquee Selection Tools. Hide and show it using Command H

  • Question about selecting vector paths in Photoshop

    Hi, I have a question about selecting path points in photoshop.
    This is the setup. I have a vector shape layer (the redi circle). but that's placed inside a group with a vector mask (the black pentagon). What I want to do is select parts of the red circle using click and drag) so I can modify portions of the circle).
    This is Photoshop's behavior as I've noticed it. Photoshop likes to select the shapes for you, and will target layers on its own when you use the Path Selection Tool. It tends to want to select the top most shape. If I target the shape layer first, I can use the Direct Selection tool to select individual points. I can add selected points bu shift+clicking.This is all well and good.
    If I try to select multiple points using click+drag though, it gets a bit weird.
    If I try to click+drag to select multiple points from within the vector mask (from the black), it will fail and select the vector mask. If i try to click+drag to select multiple points from outside the vector mask (from the white), then it will allow me to select points from my vector shape like i intended.
    I could also shift click to hide the vector mask, and it will work the way i want.
    Is there an easy way to tell photoshop not to auto target vector shapes? or a better way to select paths inside vector masks?

    Sure.
    Simply click once on the vector mask for the shape layer (red circle) to highlight that vector mask in the Layers Panel. Then when you click-drag the anchors of that path will be selected, not the group's path.
    If you have no mask highlighted, Photoshop assumes it should select the first path it comes in contact with.

  • Beginner PS CS5 question

    In PS CS5, I masked a rectangular selection on my first photo.   Then I dragged a 2nd photo on to 1st photo using the move tool and it creates a new layer which I can now see a portion the 2nd photo through my 1st photo's rectangular selection window I selected a minute ago.  So far so good.
    However, I can only see a portion of the 2nd photo through the window because the window is not large enough for the entire 2nd photo to be seen.  Is it possible to reduce the size of only the 2nd photo so that the entire 2nd photo is small enough to be seen through the 1st photos rectangular selection?

    If I understood your question the process is quite simple.
    1. Make sure the layer with the part you want to resize is the active layer
    2. Click "cmd" + "a"
    3. Go to the "Edit" drop down menu and select: "transform": "scale"
    4. Drag corner of the marquee until you have the size you want, then hit ENTER. To constrain the proportions hold down the shift key as you drag.

  • Photoshop CS5 Pen tool Selection problem?

    I've been using photoshop for a while, and have never encountered this problem. I've had CS5 for about a year now and this is the first time it has done this, so hopefully someone can help me!
    When I open photoshop, everything works. I make a new layer, go to use the pen tool,  make my shape and then complete it, and the line solidifies showing its a complete shape. I right click, and select the option: Make Selection.
    Instead of turning the inside of the shape into the selected part, it selects everything outside of it!
    I can't for the life of me figure out how this started happening, as it didn't do it a few days ago. I must have hit a button or something, but its still very annoying. Hopefully someone can help! Restarting both the program and the computer, does not help.

    There's a button for that up in the options area, when a Path Tool is active.    It's been a while...  Ah, here:
    I'm betting you have the one next to it pressed.
    Look at your path icons in the PATHS panel.  If they're white inside, you're creating an enclosed path.  If they're gray inside with a white surround, you're removing a path from the surroundings.

  • Quick question re select-options

    Hi
    I am relatively new to ABAP but have a quick question:
    I need to create a select-options which does the following:
    1. Allows ONLY "equals" signs
    2. Disallows intervals
    3. Disallows the use of ranges in the multiple selection box.
    4. Allows multiple individual selections.
    I can achieve most using the following:
    select-options s_knvh for knvh-kunnr no intervals.
    However, this still allows ranges using the multiple selection box, and also allows the "not equal to" option.
    Adding the "no-extension" syntax simply removes my ability to use multiple individual entries.
    Any ideas?

  • Photoshop CS5 crashes when selecting print settings in print dialog box

    I work on a Mac Pro desktop with OS 10.6.4. Photoshop CS5 crashes every time I try to select "print settings" in the print dialog box. I work in a large office and our networked color printer is a Konica Minolta bizhub C451. In fact, if I hit "print" it will crash whether or not I hit "print settings" first. In CS4, there was a separate menu item that allowed you to change printer settings before going into the print dialog box. That choice is gone now, you have to select it through the print dialog box.
    This is the only way I can print out color proofs for my clients. Unfortunately, I do not have administrator rights to any printer (our office has about 100 people, only IT staff can fiddle with that). What can I do to get this solved?

    I think I have fixed it, though I'm not sure why this worked.
    System Preferences>Print & Fax. Selected the Konica Minolta printer (the B/W printer was working fine). Changed the name. Still didn't fix it. Went back selected my newly named Konica Minolta then "Open Print Queue" (like Dave said)>print settings. Change the driver to "Generic Postscript printer." I could print, but only on letter-size paper, no other options available (need tabloid). Went back to system preferences>print & fax>Konica Minolta2>open print queue>drivers then I reselected the updated printer drivers--the same one that hasn't been working.
    Now, it works.

  • Photoshop CS5 closes when selecting "File-Automate-Batch"

    I am using Adobe Photoshop CS5 (v12.0.4 x32) under Windows XP Pro SP3. When I select “File-Automate-Batch”, a window pops up saying:
    Adobe Photoshop CS5 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
    The choices to continue are “Send Error Report” or “Don’t Send” but with either selection, Photoshop closes. This happens even with no images open.
    What do I need to do to fix this problem?

    From reading the different posts about this problem, the answer seems to be removing the Twain plugin resolves the issue
    or possibly updating your scanner drivers. Have you installed the optional Twain plugin into photoshop cs5?

  • Photoshop CS5 Win 64bit, selection/point glitchy?

    Hi guys,
    I'm trialing CS5 on 64bit at the moment, just wondering if anyone has had experience, where when using the selection tool, or move tool or any tool where you need to select or draw out something, I am regularly getting a glitch where where I selected/where the mouse point should be moves like magic 100+ pixels off (in random direction) where it should be. It like shifts off on its own?
    Never had this issue in previous photoshops etc.
    Not sure what's causing this.
    Any help would be great

    Someone reported a similar problem due to Windows tablet functions being enabled (it was trying to recognize some gesture).
    And I've seen similar problems due to a bug in a third party plugin before (it just plain messed up mouse input in Photoshop).

  • CS5 won't select brushes the first time I click on them

    Hi,
    I'm having some trouble with picking brushes to use in CS5. The first issue is that when I scroll through the different brushes available, if I hover over one for too long (in order to make the alt text with the brush's name show up), the brush selection will jump back to whatever I had selected previously, and I have to scroll through again to get back where I was. The second issue is that when I click a new brush I want to use, then move my cursor to the canvas, the brush resets itself to whatever I had selected previously, and I have to go back and reselect the new brush. (Sometimes more than once.) It's really messing up my work flow...
    Does anybody have any idea how to make Photoshop actually select the brush I click on the first time I click it?
    I tried reseting the brushes to the default, so that there weren't so many (I've downloaded quite a few) but this didn't help. I also tried restarting Photoshop. The problems are still happening.
    For the record, I am using Photoshop CS5 on a Mac running OS 10.6.8. I'm using a Wacom tablet but also the computer's touchpad. The problem seems to happen whether I control the cursor with the touchpad or the tablet.

      END OF fs_table.
    DATA:

    " Populate the data in Internal Table.
    " While displaying data.
    LOOP AT t_table INTO fs_table.
      AT NEW status.
         WRITE:/ fs_table-status.
      ENDAT.

    You can also use ON CHANGE OF fs_table-status, instead of AT NEW, if you get ***//* for date and time.
    With this, status will be displayed once and remaining will following under it.
    If you want everything to be displayed on change of each new field, apply that to every field,
    eg:
    AT NEW zident.
       WRITE:/ fs_table-zident.
      ENDAT.
    AT NEW date.
       WRITE: fs_table-date.
    ENDAT.
    .. so on and so forth.
    This is just a test-case, try using the control break statements.

  • Question about selection table analysis

    My last post was closed by the moderator so I would like to ask a different question. Please apologize if my question is trivial.
    1. There is a selection table seltab with one fields of type I, with the following contents:
    I     GT     3     0
    I     NE     8     0
    The literature eg. ABAP Objects says that the control statement like IF or CASE can be used with logical expression IN.
    Now I am checking if the variable test fulfills the conditions defined by the selection table.
    DO 10 TIMES.
      IF test IN seltab.
        write test.
      ENDIF
      test = test + 1.
    ENDDO.
    As a result I get a full list of values.
    1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
    2. Now, if the table contains
    I     GT     3     0
    I get
    4 5 6 7 8 10 as expected
    3. If the table seltab contains
    I     NE     3     0
    the result also seems to be ok
    1 2 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
    The final question is. Is it true that the logical expression IN cannot be used with IF for more complex data comparisions?

    I read as:
    the variable fulfills the condition if is greater than 3 and not equal 8
    test > 3 and
    test <> 8
    which should give the result from the example above a list
    4 5 6 7 9 10
    What is wrong with my analysis?

    HI All.
    I must first start off by recommending anyone seriously wanting to get into Scripting, or (like me) am fairly knowledgable, but needed the resource, to check out "InDesign CS5 Automation Using XML & Javascript" by Grant Gamble. (Amazon, Kindle etc...)
    I am sure I am not the only one who has made his way, stumbling and even hacking through code to produce scripts that work well, but not really understanding why certain things were done in a certain way. This books helps a great deal with this, laying a good basis for further development.
    Anyway, on to my question. In the afore mentioned book, he talks about making a global variable/object that is used to pass variables into throughout the script ie:
    var g = {};
    main();
    g = null;
    function main(){
    //code here
    //g.win = new Window("dialog",undefined,"New Window");
    //etc.....
    I can see how this works, with "g" being a master item, but why would this be needed? It seems more confusing to me, but maybe cause I am self taught, and not really been shown the "proper" way to use variables!
    Can someone explain the reason behind this for me.

        Don't fool yourself. A difference of opinion doesn't mean both sides are right. It could well mean one side is wrong. (Maybe that's me. Maybe that's Jongware. Let's wait and see what he has to say.)
        In this case...this design pattern is just dumb. Unless there's something you're not showing us, like multiple functions that need to exchange data...in which case there is probably a better way, but it's hard to evaluate.
        The pattern is dumb because it does bad things with no upside. It makes the code harder to read. It adds potential conflicts with other scripts. And it has no benefit.
        I should probably have given you yet another example of something better. The very simple one. It's not as good because it still pollutes the namespace with main, but it's easy to understand and to read:
    main();
    function main() {
       var g = {};
       g.win = new Window("dialog", undefined, "New Window");
    Even ignorance of a fnuction is probably better, since you could wrap it in a function later on (as your program got more complex) and it would all still work. That is:
    var g = {};
    g.win = new Window("dialog", undefined, "New Window");
    But I suspect you're oversimplifying the program, since you told us that the point of this "technique" was to "pass variables into throughout the script."
    But your example doesn't demonstrate any "passing." It's not too clear exactly what you mean though.
    But here are some examples:
    var g = {};
    f1();
    f2();
    function f1() {
      g.able = "baker";
    function f2() {
      alert(g.able);
    There we have some data moving from f1() to f2(). But it's still poor. You should write it like this:
    main();
    function f1() {  return "baker";
    function f2(s) {
      alert(s);
    function main() {
      var tmp;
      tmp = f1();
      f2(tmp);
    But if for some reason it was really complicated and you needed to have f1() and f2() messing around directly with the data, then you could have a variable that was scoped to both of them:
    function main() {
      var shared;
      function f1() {
        shared = "baker";
      function f2() {
        alert(shared);
      f1();
      f2();
    main();
    But still you would never set a variable to null when you were done. The language has much better features than that! Use them!
    When the enclosing function exits, there's never any fear of anything else gaining access to the variable. No need to set its value, because nothing can access it! Cross the final } and you're set. Awesome!
    Obviously you put yourself at a level greater than someone needing
    this book, but I know my short comings, and can see HUGE value in a book
    detailing why certain practices are carried out
    Respectfully, this is not a reasonable answer.
    There are a lot of books out there. That you have found one that is better than forum posts does not mean it is a good idea to recommend it, especially when it seems to have problems. If you've read through several books and found this one to be better than the others, then that might be a good basis to recommend it. Or if you have searched high and low for books and failed to find any. Or if you were comparing it to Adobe's documentation on scripting. But by all means, do tell us the standard of comparison you're using...
    But it doesn't sound like you're doing that. It sounds like you're in one breath praising a book, without comparing it to anything else. And in the next breath, you're asking a question (rightly so!) about what appears to be a bad practice that is advocated by the book.
    That just doesn't make much sense.
    I hope I'm misinterpretting you.
