CS5 - Reduce Noise Filter/Remove JPEG Artifact

Hi,
I'm using 64 bit Photoshop CS5. Something odd happens when I open the Reduce Noise Filter and select Advanced and then put a check in the box for Remove JPEG Artifact. Once I do this, if I do anything else, two sliders appear below the line for Remove JPEG Artifact. The sliders aren't labeled or titled and are disabled. I can't seem to find and explanation as to what these might be for and why they don't appear until after you do something else within the filter after checking Remove JPEG Artifact. Any info or ideas appreciated.

These seem to be drawing artifacts where the sliders from the "Per Channel" tab are not correctly hidden because the filter is not drawing the tabs in correct order. I can repro it on my system as well. Well, one more for the Adobe devs to fix, but nothing to worry about.

  • Reduce Noise setting in iPhoto 08 won't save me edits

    I hope someone can help.
Whenever I apply the Reduce Noise filter in iPhoto 08 and then click 'Done' - it doesn't save the changes that I made.
All other effects that I apply are saved (e.g. brightness, tint etc) it is just the Reduce Noise one that doesn't save.
I have tried exporting the photo after the 'Reduce Noise' effect has been applied. It exports the photo successfully - but when I open the photo, the 'Reduce Noise' effects have not been saved.
Is this something that I can fix? Or is this a known bug in this version of iPhoto 08?
If it is a bug - how do I let Apple know so that they can release an update?
Thanks everyone - I'm new to the Mac, this in my first one, and I only got it a couple of weeks ago.

    To talk to Apple:
iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback
There have been reports of some folk having difficulty with some of the editing features, but nothing that makes me say it effects everyone. Somethings to try
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there.

  • On CS5, how can I recover jpeg images that were Batch Renamed prior to removal from my flashcard?

On CS5, how can you recover JPEG images that were accidentally Batch Renamed prior to removal from a flash card? Is it a total lose or can they be saved somehow?

If they were renamed on the flash card that is a poor practice.  If renamed in Bridge the old names can be recovered it you have checked "preserve original name in XMP".  If not you are out of luck.  But you still have the images correct?

  • Smart Sharpen and Reduce Noise preview windows are blank

    Hello,
I am using Photoshop CS5 64 bit with WIndows 7
Whenever I try to use the Smart Sharpen or Reduce Noise image menu items, the preview window for both
    these applications are always blank.
My images are mostly 16 bit with some 8 bit but I always get the same blank preview window
    Any help would be appreciated

Always check your LAYERS panel to ensure you've activated the image layer on which the pixels reside, and not an adjustment layer.  Also make sure you've clicked on the image if there's a layer mask present, so the filter won't be inadvertntly working on the mask.
Assuming you're not on the wrong layer, have you checked to see whether new drivers are available from the web site of the maker of your video card?  Many, many display problems are resolved by updating display drivers.

  • Background Noise Filter

Is there a filter in Soundtrack 1.2 (other than noise gate) that will remove background noise/chatter from dialogue recorded in a large hall/room? The background chatter is typical of what you'd hear in a super large meeting room with thousands of people present. It's a constant and similiar drone.
The two filter categories from my effects window are Apple and Emagic.
    Thanks.

    try this in SPPRO.
    • open waveform
    • drag over the NOISE part that you can clearly identify (the chatter and stuff you want to remove)
    • Choose Process > Noise Reduction > Set Noise Print. then
    • Choose Process > Noise Reduction > Reduce Noise.
    adjust the HUD to taste
refer pages in the SPPRO user manual

  • PS CS3 Noise Filter better than PSElements 6 Noise Filter ?

PS CS3 Noise Filter better than PSElements 6 Noise Filter ?

I appreciate very much you responding and clarifying to see if somebody else does know.
Actually the Noise Filter has five selections to choose from.
I'm most interested in the Dust & Scratches tool. And, very surprised not to find a lot of 'discussion' about it, in fact almost none.
This whole Dust & Scratches Removal thing has got me scratching my butt trying to figure out if any of it by any software is NOT mostly hype.
    (long reply follows)
"Retouching" tools like Dust & Scratches Removal seem to be useable only on a 1-by-1 file basis, with lots of 'manual' tweeking required, not as an Auto function to batches of lots of files at the same time.
Which in hindsight from experiences and what I've learned from those, makes sense, but, does not help me.
I have now concluded that 'retouching' some things like Dust & Scratches can only be done on a 1-file-at-a-time basis and takes quite a bit of 'manual' tweeking effort. And works IF one is capable of understanding how to do it. Otherwise, it - meaning me - only seems to make things worse instead of better.
My journey started last year when I got a German Braun Slide Scanner that included ICE, as well as Noise Reduction, which, like the included GEM and ROC only seemed to make things worse instead of better, especially worse when applying the same settings to every slide being scanned.
I have to process 100s or 1,000s of slides, and soon old photos too, at a price that most people can or are willing to pay, which is very low because of the numbers of slides and photos involved, so it's imperative for me to have Auto Tools to apply to batches of files, instead of spending a lot of time 'manually' tweeking each and every file one at a time.
With the scanner, the ICE and other tools can only be used during the actual scanning of each slide, not after scanning on the resulting file. And those 'tools' invariably remove too much, details of faces and other stuff one wants to preserve, and fuzzy the focus.
The settings that work on the very first slide or photo do not work for any other. So, I had to turn off those tools altogether.
There was a software suite recommended for the scanner for after-scanning work, which was a European version of Photoshop, costing about as much as PS, but from the Trial version I couldn't see any benefit to getting it.
I tried various Retouching programs for much less money, many not worth even trying, and again, even for those that did do what I needed to any degree, ran in to the same thing. Way too much time required for 'manually' tweeking each and every file 1 at a time, and never getting a good result because I'm no good at doing that.
THEN I recently got a Kodak Photo Scanner that does photos like the German scanner does slides, only, it does photos a LOT faster. It will scan up to 20 pre-loaded standard thickness photos of various sizes and orientations - in about 25 seconds.
But again, the problem with Dust & Scratches.
There's a program suite for after-scanning 'retouching' available for the Kodak Photo Scanner - but they want $ 700 for that, and it's pretty much a clone of Photoshop.
    SO,
when I saw the comparison list between PS CS3 and the Extended version saying the Extended has a better Noise Filter,
    It got me wondering..........

  • Signal averaging to reduce noise

I am an undergrad working with a LabView 4.0 program. Our program deals with acquiring a signal from an acousto-optic tunable filter. I want to be able to average the signal to reduce the noise that we are getting. I am not sure how to orient the program in order for it to do this.

    Chris,
Can you publish an adress where I can see what is the goal of your research - souns interesting for myself.
I guess you measure an amplitude of a signal with none frequency/phase. Try to find out what is a lock-In
amplifier thats the besr way to reduce noise in these cases. Have a look at Stanford research systems. It's
not to complicated to program a lock-in in Labview.

  • "Reduce noise" doesn't work!!

I select a part of the noise I want to reduce, I hit 'set noise,' then 'reduce noise.' I hit preview and set all the levels until it sounds good, and when I hit 'apply,' it doesn't apply! Any ideas why not?

A good rule of thumb is to note at what level the noise is in your noise sample. Then select all the audio you want to remove the noise from. In the Noise Reduction plug-in set the level to the level you noted when you took the noise print. From here it is a matter of adjusting the amount of NR to balance out the noise reduced vs. the side effects of too much NR. When properly calibrated, if you hit the "Noise Only" button you should hear noise with as little signal as possible. The more signal you hear, the more the tonal qualities of the signal are being affected by the NR process.

  • Is there any way I can see which of many "reduce noise" is on a clip?

    Hi Guys
Is there any way I can see which of many "Reduce Noise" actions is on a particular 'shot' from a video clip in my timeline?
I understand that the entire list of Reduce Noise actions I see are all applied to the entire video clip, except in different areas of the same clip, from which I've extracted various shots. I performed different, specific, Reduce Noise actions all on smaller parts of the clip since some Reduce Noise actions needed to be a bit more tailored than others.
Under "Actions" on the left I have a list of approx 10 ticked Reduce Noise actions. Is there any way, by clicking on a clip, I can tell which of these specific Reduce Noise actions apply to that particular area of a clip.
If anyone can help me out I'd really appreciate it.
    Warm regards
    Peter

You need to explain why it does not work including exact error messages and what version of iphoto the old library is from
the general answer is that you can not view it using iPhoto - you can convert and open it -  if the old library is from iphoto '08 (version 7.x.x) ore earlier you need to back it up and ad and run the iPhoto library upgrader -  iPhoto '11 or later: About the Library Upgrader - Apple Support - If it is from a newer version or after you run the upgrader then held down the option key while launching iPhoto until the select library window comes up and select the old library from that window to finish the conversion
Repeat the option = launch to switch back to the current library
You can use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to merge the libraries after they all are for the same version if you want

  • Very Poor Image Quality In Viewer, JPEG Artifacts

I upgraded to Aperture 3 some time ago, and purchased a new Mac Pro specifically for this application.  I am an amature/ sometime professional photographer and I have been using Aperture since Version 1.  This weekend I finally had some time to sit down with Aperture 3 for some serious work with my scanned film images.  These are large TIF masters scanned in with my Nikon CoolScan 9000.  Some are medium format black & white Tri-X Pan images, others are 35mm, also black & white Tri-X Pan.  Everything scanned in on the Nikon is at the maximum resolution for the master, on the theory that I can always bump it down later if that's necessary.
I am noticing vastly lower image quality in the viewer then with Aperture 2.  Specifically, I am seeing massive JPEG artifacts in the viewer image then I have ever seen before.  The images also render darker in the viewer then before. These artifacts do not appear when I export my images (say as JPEGS for posting to a web page), or when I print them.  The quality of the exported and print images seem just fine and the exported JPEGS are completely free of the artifacts I am seeing in the viewer.
I have tried rebuilding the previews several times, experimenting with different quality settings.  I have experimented with different proof profile settings.  My printer is an Epson Stylus Photo R1800 and I have tried various paper settings for it as well as other proof profile settings such as the Adobe and Apple RGB settings and the generic grey profiles.  Every time I change a setting I have forced a rebuild of the previews to no detectable effect.  Nothing I do seems to have any effect whatsoever on the image quality in the viewer which remains relentlessly the same as it always was.
This poor viewer image quality is making it very difficult to work in Aperture 3.  I suspect there is a setting somewhere like an easter egg in this new Aperture I haven't found yet but it is becoming very frustraiting and I could use a pointer because, again, nothing I have tried has changed the image quality in the viewer in any way I can detect and the photos look perfectly awful there...darker and loaded with JPEG artifacts. Things export and print just fine, but I need to see what I am going to get in the viewer or I can't do my work.

I interpret this as ... Eventually you should be looking at the Master with the Version changes applied. I'm assuming at this point, you aren't looking at the Preview. Since you don't need Previews to view and edit your images.
Yeah...that's sort of what I gleaned from that text. I was experimenting with the preview settings because I couldn't see any other way to fix the problem.  What I'm hearing now is that the problem has no fix.  If you scan in black & white film negatives (or anything else that's monochrome I suppose) with the color space set as gray scale you are asking for trouble.  The sense I get from the text Gomez Addams referred me to is the behavior in that case is unpredictable, and furthermore film photographers aren't the customer base Apple is trying to cultivate with this product.
Aperture is designed to work with images from digital cameras which use an RGB color space...
Okay...fine.  I have several digital cameras I occasionally use for professional work and I am here to tell you Aperture is an absolute blessing for that work. I do shoots every now and then for a local community newspaper and I would not want to live without this product. I remember back when I was a teenager in the 70s being up all night in the darkroom to get an assignment I'd had to cover right before deadline, and then go to my day job the next morning without any sleep. This is much better. And even with the personal art photography it is good to be able to just scan things in and make adjustments in the computer.  You can do so much more. I would not want to go back.
But I reckon I need to find something I can rely on for my film work, or at least my black & white film work because as I read this Apple is not supporting film photography with this product and black & white film photography in particular and some of us still use film. No...scanning in my Tri-X negatives in the CoolScan as color produces weird results and anyway Photoshop and GIMP for goodness sakes seem to handle grayscale files just fine. Plus, I've already got thousands of those negatives scanned, I am not rescanning all that in RGB just to satisfy Aperture. The color slide film scans don't seem to be a problem, but that's now. I think I'm being told not to count on That always being the case either.
Aperture is designed to work with images from digital cameras...
Okay...fine...film is old technology after all, Nikon isn't even making their film scanners anymore...check the prices on the few still new-in-the-box ones left out there. My CoolScan 9000 is selling for twice on the second-hand market what I paid for it new and new it wasn't cheap. And yet it's not economically viable for Nikon to continue making them. Film is dying. But I still like working with film and film cameras and I reckon I'll keep doing that until I can't get any more of it and my stash of Tri-X Pan bulk rolls runs out.
Thank you all very much for your help. I think I see what I need to do now.

  • "Shadow" around Canvas in PS CS5 and how to remove it?

    Hi everybody,
forgive me if this was answered before, I did a search but did not find anything relevant ...
I upgraded to PS CS5 recently and there seems to be a new "Feature" of a sort of shadow around every page/canvas.
Maybe the correct term would be "Page Shadow" ... ?
Imagine a plain white document of, say, 500 by 500 pixels.
When I resize its (non-tabbed) window to make it bigger than the document itself, I don't get a sharp border between the white document and the grey window-background as it used to be.
Instead there is this "Page Shadow" around it, which I find very annoying and it wasn't there before in CS4 or any other version I remember.
I looked everywhere, but I can't find any option to remove this shadow.
I really want to get rid of it though, any tips on what I may be missing ??
    Thanks
    Duuude
P.S.: I hope what I wrote makes any sense, English is not my first language ...

    Hi Zeno,
Thank you for letting us know this. I turned it off. Its really annoying when working on images
as it give it a fuzzy edge look that bugs my eye.

Just an FYI, the drop shadow around the image was first introduced in CS4 but it needs OpenGL Drawing enabled from Edit->Preferences->Performance to work.

Noise filter troubles (CS6): I am trying to create a random night sky pattern. I have a black layer, I apply a noise filter (monochromatic) at 135%, I then add an adjustment layer > adjusting until just a few stars are visible (moving black and white sliders). Looks great on the screen but if I merge the layer or save as JPG the levels adjustment vanishes and all the grain from that layer is applied as if it was never there. I go back into photoshop and on the screen looks correct. Any thoughts?

    Hello ScribeD,
Try viewing the image at 100% (View>Actual Pixels) to get an accurate view of what what you are doing.  Certain Effects and Filters (like Noise) do not preview accurately and can appear to change when you Merge or Flatten.
Actual Pixels (100% view) means that one pixel in your photo is being displayed by one monitor pixel. This is the only way to see how your editing actually looks.
A quick way to get to Actual Pixels is to double-click on the Zoom Tool.

I previously had PS CS5 Trial installed but removed it using both Control Panel Programs and deleting all files from the CS5 directory on Program Files.  I then installed a purchased product from Adobe disc using the serial number on the case.  But when I try to launch it, I get a screen headed Photoshop CS5 Extended Trial.  It asks for the serial number and says that my trial has expired.  It rejects the serial number from the Adobe case saying "This Serial Number is not valid for this product".  It thinks that I still have the expired Trial Version installed.  How do I convince it (the program) that the Trial Version is long gone and the currently installed product was installed with a valid and accepted serial number????

Let me know how it goes. Go into your Adobe account and register your serial number asap.
