CS5: Rounded selection with image dimension?

Hello,
I wanted to create images with roundes corners. Therefore I am using the roundec rectangle tool to create a mask.
But how it is possible (the shortest way) to have this rectangle the same size of the image?
In some layout programs you can double click the rectangle tool to create automatically a rectangle with the same dimensions of the document -- such a behaviour oder feature in PS would be nice (and this would the shortest way for my task). This is what I am looking for.
thanks

In my experience the snapping doesn't seem to apply to everything I would expect to snap. For example drawing shapes and selections don't snap for me while moving layers and transforming snap as expected.
cmeira, Sorry, I didn't read very carefully your first post.
This time I tried it myself and here's how you can do it:
Go to Layers > Vector Mask > Reveal All to attach a vector mask to the current layer.
Take the Rectangular shape tool and in the Shape tool's options click the "Paths" button for the kind of path and then also the last button which is "Exclude overlapping path areas"
Draw the rectangle path so that it fills the entire image. I find this easier by first drawing random rectangle and then pressing Ctrl + t and dragging two opposite corners to snap to the corners of the image.
Now take the Rounded Ractangle tool set the Radius for the corners in the options as desired and draw a random rounded rectangle.
Then get the Direct Selection Tool (white arrow under the T "text tool"). Drag to select all four  points on one side of the rounded rectangle, then click and start dragging one of the selected points and hold the Shift key to constrain move the points to the edge of the document where they will snap. Repeat the same for each side.
This process would have been greatly simplified if Photoshop enable snapping while drawing vector shapes. If it does I don't know how to do it.

  • Basic noobie problem with image dimensions

    Hi folks.
I'm trying to walk myself through a Layer Masking exercise, but I've run into a 'glitch' involving some very basic Photoshop CS3 sizing elements, and I'm durned if I can see what's going wrong.
I've print screened the last stage of my PSD and uploaded it to Alkaspace, here:
    http://www.alkaspace.com/free/view_image/a0a4b2304/gearshake.JPG
    The screen you see is made up (on an XPP SP3 laptop) of three basic components;
    1) 'masking2.psd'is the file I created as background. It's 200mm x 200mm x 72 pixels\inch, RGB, 8 bits and white. But I'm not sure that this file has anything to do with my question. Rather, I think it's to do with one or the other of the two jpgs I downloaded from a tutorial site for the purposes of this exercise. These files are: (not the original names which I think were 'example1 and 2)
    2) handshake.jpg 7k
    3) gearwheel.jpg 25k
    Here's my headscratcher:
Both of these files are 72pi and the same width, 8.82cm. (their heights are different, as you can see)
Both were set at (if it matters) 100% size.
So why is handshake front) markedly different in width from gearwheel (rear), when they're both 8.82 cm wide? Why don't the sides of the handshake image line up exactly with the sides gearwheel?
It's driving me bats. Help would be greatly appreciated :-)

    >There doesn't seem to be a choice in the Layer's right-click menu to turn off the "mask facility" without also removing the results of the masking process.
you can right click the mask itself in the layers palette to get a popup menu that lets you "apply" it. that kinda merges it into the rest of the layer.
    >And if the Layer Mask is still activated on a layer, how does one then use the paint brush normally on the layer?
in the layers palette, on the masked layer, you can click on either the icon for the image data, or the icon for the mask data. try it. see how whichever one you click on gets a little border around it? that tells you which one will get attention when you paint on the layer in the main image.

    Any help appreciated.

What am I doing wrong or what have I not set?
Not sure what you mean exactly with other window but think it is Adobe Camera Raw and after the settings you adjusted they are not reflected in the Bridge Preview panel?
First thing to try could be the menu tools/cache/purge cache for folder to see if this updates the new settings.

  • Finder doesn't show image dimensions

    Hi!
I have a problem with image dimensions in Finder. Finder doesn't show image dimension info in preview column and Get Info window. But when I open in Preview app I can see dimensions in Get Info window. How to solve this problem. If I want to sort images by dimension, I can't do that. Because Finder doesn't know image dimensions. You can see images below.

There is someone who can sort images by dimensions and see dimensions in list view. Also if Finder will not show image dimensions, why give me "Dimensions" and "Resolution" option to select in list view.

I have done this. But doesn't show information.

  • Preserve image dimensions

Hi I am about to do my ACE exam for ID
So i have been studying away - and am not happy with the 'preseve image dimension' option
Here is a practice question from the adobe site (with supplied answer)
4.1 Given a scenario, determine the best settings for choosing and placing an image
You want to replace an image from a selected frame. The new image is larger than the original
image. You want the new image to be imported at the same scaling percentage as the original.
    What should you do?
    A. hold down Shift as you click the Relink button in the Links panel
    B. hold down Option/Alt as you click the Update button in the Links panel
    C. before replacing the image, deselect Preserve Image Dimensions When Relinking in the
File Handling pane of the Preferences dialog box
    D. before replacing the image, select Preserve Image Dimensions When Relinking in the File
Handling pane of the Preferences dialog box
    Correct answer: C
BUT it says this in the help file
Choose how relinked graphics are scaled
When you relink to replace one graphic with a different source file, you can keep the image dimensions of the file that’s being replaced, or you can display the incoming file in its actual dimensions.
Choose Edit > Preferences > File Handling (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > File Handling (Mac OS).
Choose Preserve Image Dimensions When Relinking if you want images to appear at the same size as the images they’re replacing. Deselect this option to have relinked images appear at their actual size
Is this a contradiction or am i being thick
    Thanks

    Sorry Peter
I think I must have hit it by mistake
But just experimented with it on 6.04
    I have image 210x297
I replace this with preserve image dimensions ON -new image is 210x1776
I replace this with preserve image dimensions OFF -new image is 25.013x211.552   --- which is the same size as if imported into a new frame
Doesnt this make the help file correct and the adobe practice exam wrong ?
I assume the original to be the image that is being replaced

  • Image dimensions not consistent (Nikon vs. Apple / Aperture)

I just realized something strange about RAW (NEF) images taken with my new Nikon D700 and copied to my Mac: according to Nikon's specifications (http://tinyurl.com/54cdn9) full FX size RAW images are supposed to be 4,256 x 2,832 pixels.
My Mac however thinks these images are 4,256 x 2,828 pixels - no matter whether I look at the Finder info (Get Info), open the RAW file in Preview or import it into Aperture.
But when I open the very same RAW file with Photoshop, do some basic RAW processing and look at the image dimensions once the file has been opened, it has the 4,256 x 2,832 pixels that it actually should have. Same thing when imported into Adobe Lightroom, by the way.
I remember also having realized this differnce in dimensions with my D300. My Mac thought it had different dimensions than the ones as specified by Nikon and recognized by non-Apple applications.
Now, I am quite a bit concerned about losing 4 pixels in height - not of course because the images get dramatically smaller, but because they are (incorrectly) resized and lose quality.
    My questions would be:
Am I the only one with that inconsistency? What dimensions do your D700 or D300 images have? Are these consistent to Nikon's specifications?
Do you agree that those 4 pixels affect image quality?
Or is there a good reason why Apple is tampering with image dimensions and I just don't get it? What am I missing?
    Comments welcome!

    Garp wrote:
So what you're saying is that while the number of pixels is different in height, there is no sort of scaling etc. applied to the images when rendering them in different height as specified by the camera manufacturer?
Or at least very, very little. It is not even sure that Nikon's calculations give a more correct value than Apple's.
What if it were not 4 pixels that were different, but 200 or 400? Wouldn't some distortion be visible in the images or would these 400 px just get cropped away?
I'm sure it would be visible at 400 pixels difference.
I apologize if I may sound ignorant, but I just don't see any reason why an app would not adhere to a camera manufacturer's specs and apply differing image dimensions for no apparent reason, even if it's just 4 pixels?
I do not know the exact reason either, but I'm sure there is one. What I know is that interpreting a RAW file is not trivial. The same discrepancy is there with both my D300 and my D40X.
By the way, I tried as you suggested, fired up my Windows XP on VMWare and installed IrfanView and Picasa - while IrfanView follows Nikons specifications with RAW dimensions of 4256 x 2832, Picasa does not: 4284 x 2844.
Very strange thing... and I thought I was experienced in digital imaging and photography... hmmm.
I'm sure you are. But we cannot all know everything. You can search the forum for other discussions on the subject. I'm sure you can google for an indepth explanation as well, even though I do not know which key words to use.

  • Issues with image centering when printing from CS5

I contacted EPSON tech support about this issue, they are putting the blame on the application used - in my case Photoshop CS5 printing with an EPSON R2880.
I am trying to figure out exact print tray margins to take into account when printing horizontal 13x19 images on EPSON's Hot Press 13x19 paper on the R2880 (via manual roll single feeder).
These are not borderless full frame images, 13x19 image files set on white with exact white frames around the image, so the shift in centering becomes quite obvious on the print.
Here are the two print settings I have tried, both do not center the image correctly:
Selected Scale to Fit Media & Center Image Top:0 Left 0.105
Selected Center Image: Top: -10,152 Left -0.118
(margin values are entered in the print window automatically)

u are probably not getting much help on this unless you post screenshot of your process (starting with File> Print window)
remember, Photoshop can print a document correct regardless of how it looks on the monitor (and vice versa: Photoshop can display a document correct regardless of how it prints)
i recommend getting a known target like the WhackedRGB.jpg and see where the problem is occuring (in Photoshop color management settings, on the monitor, on the printer or both)...

  • Rounded corners from image mask disappear with Drop Zone

    Hi All,
I'm really stumped here. I'm on Motion4 and per directions from other posts I have used the following method to attempt a mask shape. The desired outcome is a photo that has a nice square shape with rounded corners.
    1. Using a photo on the canvas.
    2. In the layers menu, I click on the image and select, Add Image Mask
    3. In the inspector I go to Image mask and drop in Frame17 from the contents folder.
The problem...every time the rounded corners from the shape seem to disappear. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong? Or suggest another method.
Additional info from Image Mask Tab: Source Channel is set to Alpha, Mask Blend Mode is set to Add, automatically-I did not set these.

When you say that the rounded corners seem to disappear, what do you mean exactly? Are they there at first, but then disappear after you start playing the sequence? Or do the rounded corners not happen at all?
If the corners start, but disappear after playing the project, then it probably means that the Frame 17 image from the content folder is not as long as the image mask. As soon as the Frame ends, it will stop providing the source for the image mask. Fix this by making sure that Frame 17 is at least as long as your image mask.
Alt way, and easier unless you're working in a 3D project, is to simply draw a rectangle mask around your photo and in the Mask tab of the inspector, adjust the roundness parameter until the corners are sufficiently rounded to your liking.

  • Unable to select an image with right click of the mouse

When in Library mode using grid view, right clicking on a thumbnail does not select the thumbnail, and previously selected items remain selected. If you then try to delete the item, you can inadvertently delete multiple items that you did not intend to delete and not the item you wanted to delete.
Right clicking on an already selected image or one of a group of selected images works and all selected images can be deleted. However a right click on a non selected image should should drop any current selections and select only the image clicked. (This can be verified in Bridge)
I am using Lightroom 1.3.1 in Windows XP SP2 with 2 gig of ram.

Have you switched your mouse buttons i.e have you changed assignments to your mouse buttons in the control panel?
If not, then clicking on an image will select it, CTRL-Click will select non-contiguous images, SHIFT-Click will select contiguous images.
Right-clicking will show a context menu. (and the context menu will change if you have single multiple images selected: e.g if you select two images you will see a menu item Open in Compare that is not there if only a single image is selected, Delete Photo... becomes Delete Photos... etc)
Also, in grid or filmstrip view you will see up to three levels of brightness on the frames around thumbnails:
-lightest frame: the active image i.e. the one that will be opened if you go to develop mode, or will be used as "source" for synchronize command etc
-medium: other images that you have selected.
-darkest: images that are not selected.
Selected images will also have a white frame immediately around the thumbnail.

  • How to create a Contact Sheet with Adobe Photoshop CS5 from a disc with images in different folders

I got a disc with images files (mainly ai and psd files) in different folders and subfolders, how can I create a contact sheet including all the image files in different folders. (It seems that Adobe Bridge can only create a contact sheet by clicking the image files directly but not a folder including the images files)
    thx!

Use the optional Contact Sheet II plugin which is found in Adobe's Downloads:
    1) search for contact sheet in PS CS5 help
    2) choose the first result and read carefully about the Photoshop Optional Plug-In Picture Packager
    3) follow the instructions to download the zip file and note the location that you download it to.
    4) follow the instructions to install the files.
I'm not sure how PS CS5 will handle ai vector image files or if you have to batch convert them to raster images first before using Contact Sheet II.  Contact Sheet II allows you to choose a folder and Include All SubFolders as an option so you could create a Contact Sheet folder and copy all of your desired folders into that folder which will become subfolders of the main folder you choose for your contact sheet.

  • If I select multiple images to apply a change to all Aperture it does so only with the first selected. Why?

If I select multiple images to apply a change to all openings it does so only with the first selected. Why?

You probably have Primary Selection only on.
Aperture identifies the images you’ve selected by displaying them with a white border. When you select a group of images, the actively selected image, called the primary selection, appears with a thick white border and the rest of the selected images appear with thin white borders.
Primary Only button: Click this button to make changes to the primary image selection only.

  • Help with image selection/fade

Hi, I'm using Flash 8 and I'm a newbie to actionscript.
I have to create a flash document that will allow me to swap
out colors, patterns, and hardware on our collars. I found a thread
    posted
    here
that was pretty much what I was looking for. I altered the files to
use my images, so I have the transitions working for colors. When
you select an image from one set of buttons, I would like that
image to stay put while you make your selection from the second set
of buttons. Right now, you can click on button 1 in the top left
corner to select a small collar and as soon as you click the large
button 1 on the right, the small image disappears and vice versa.
How would I make the small collar selection stay put when you
click on the large collar buttons?
In the end I will want it to work like
    this
    Could someone look at my
    file and see if
they can give me some insight as to what is wrong?
    Thanks!

Thanks for your response. I wanted to show you the latest
    files to
get some feedback on the best route to go. Will your method work
for the color buttons rollovers in this as well. I'm really stuck
at this point and could use some serious help.
What I want to happen is this:
When you roll over a color swatch: the black outline around
    the color swatch fades in
When you click and release: the collar image changes and the
black outline around the color swatch stays on until you click
    another color swatch
When you rollout: the outline fades out unless the swatch was
    clicked.
Please look at the files to see what is happening now.
I could really use some help. If you don't have time to check
out the files, I also attached the code to review if that is
    faster.
    Thanks,
    jay
