CS5 table of contents broken links and missing bookmarks

I'm having an issue with the table of contents in a .pdf. I'm working on a 112 page document in InDesign CS5. After exporting the .pdf, I realized that the file would be far too large to upload to the website. I used "reduce file size" in Acrobat Pro to make it smaller and chose the option to make it compatible with Acrobat 5.0 and later. The table of contents worked fine, all bookmarks appeared and links worked but the file was still too big. I did the same thing again but for version 4.0 and later and now the file is an appropriate size but the table of contents doesn't include all of the bookmarks and certain links don't work. Any help is appreciated!

Don't go down to 4. Consider v5 a minimum. I prefer v7 as a minimum. v4 doesn't support smarty features. Generally, the higher the version number, the more clever it is at squeezing file size. But really, the single biggest factor in PDF file size is your choice of how many ppi the bitmap images are sampled down to. Did you try setting them down to 100 ppi, for example?

  • Table of Contents Broken Links

I am using Framemaker 7.1 and have created a Table of Contents for a book. When I open the PDF created for this book the links in the TOC go to the corresponding pages for the first few chapters but nothing after those works. In Framemaker when I use ALT+CTRL to try to test the link I get an error saying that it cannot find the files for the links that do not work. Does anyone know what causes this error? The files are in the folder and at the location it is looking for them. This has me stumped.

    blitza4life,
You didn't mention whether any conditional text may exist in the document. However, I have seen this happen when conditional text was used in a book and pages got edited with the conditional text hidden. If this is the culprit, the cause would be a bit of text or end-of-paragraph marker adjacent to a heading that has a condition tag applied that is set to hide at when the book is generated. If you want to rule this out, here's how:
Open all files in the book.
Set all conditions to show with indicators.
    Update the book.
    Save all files.
Save all files as MIF. (yes, in addition to...)
Close the book and all its files.
Open the book.mif file, save as .book;  and then open all the MIF files associated, then save those back to FM.
Check the TOC links to see if they work. If they do, when you land on the linked text you'll be able to see and either remove the condition tags or delete the tagged text. Then, update the book again and the TOC should be accurate.
Another potential root cause of this problem could be text insets, but that's more complicated and less frequently the issue. Please update this string when you find a solution.
    Thanks

You can download the trial version (http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html) to convert the PDF back to WORD if you do not have the original. The conversion may not be perfect, but it is typically better than starting from scratch. You may be lucky and get a good result. You might check the settings (in the save screen) to try retain format versus retain text flow. The format version can be a pain to edit since it creates a bunch of text boxes. The flow version may require you to reformat in WORD, but you likely would want to do that anyway.

  • How to create labeled table of Content with expand and collapse

    Hi All,
Can somebody help me how to create labeled table of Content with expand and collapse as example given below:
    User1
    Template1
    Template2
    User2
    +
    User3
    Template1
    Template2
Like when we see expand (+) and collapse (-) button when we click on 'about this page' link.
    Thanks
    Bhupendra

    Hi,
Tou can use Table inside table to show the details this way but I'm not sure about Expand/Collapse.
    Expand/Collapse are part of HGRID.
I think we can develop this functionality with little manipulation.

  • Repeated problem of broken link and unused files

    Hi ,
    I am using RH8.0.2
I have updated my RH8 to RH8.0.2 and then fix all broken link and did what was advised.i got result, everything was fine, I was a happy man. Today when i open the same project for updation, i found again plenty of broken links and unused file in the same project.
Is there any permanent solution of the problem of broken links and unused file or i have to fix it every time when i open my project?
    Plz help!!!
    Br,
    Rahul

    Hi Rahul.
Two things. Firstly some of the paths you have in your project are very long. In the example you have given we are seeing less than half the path. This may not be the problem but it maybe in the future. Secondly, as Peter has suggested, the problem maybe related to source control. Do you use it? I have heard of instances where (e.g. .FPJ) files cause issues.

  • Broken links that are bookmarks

I have 321 broken links that are bookmarks in a project. I don't need these bookmarks anymore, as I already spend recreating the bookmarks because I could not restore them%$$%$. My question now: is there a more expeditious way of removing the broken links other than individually fixing them (which works)?

No. If your topics contain them, the only way to remove them is to go into the topics and remove them.

  • How to create a table of contents (TOC) linking to specific pages of different (multiple) PDFs

    Hi All,
I would like to create clickable Table of Contents (TOC) that can lead to a sub clickable TOC that would lead to a specific page of different PDFs within a folder.
    Is that possible?
Secondly, is is possible to create a search box that upon typing a specific word (not related to text within the PDFs), that word to be linked to a specific page of a particular PDF out of many within a folder?
To make it more clear, I have a database of specifications of equipment and drawings of a building, all in multiple PDF files. I would like to be able to unify all those PDFs and if I type the room number of the building to be presented with a menu of choces pointing to services assosiated with that room, being elctrical power drawings, lighting drawings or drawings of Air Conditioning and Ducting associated with that room. So I type a room number, then I get a menu of Power, Lights, Fire Alarm, or Ducting all associated with that room, then if I click Fire Alarm to be directed straight to the drawing within a PDF related to that room.
    Thanks

I would say: Try and Error. Create a copy of your document and unmark in the copied document in the document inspector all boxes for the TOC. Then mark them again. Maybe you should also delete the paragraph styles and mark them again. If that doesn't work, try to copy the complete text of your document to a new created one. Maybe that works.
    Good luck!
P.S.: If that doesn't work look here. Maybe this helps.

  • How do you create Text Hover States - inDesign cs5 table of contents?

I cannot figure out how to create text hover states in the table of contents. I want it to act like a hyperlink on websites where you hover over a link and it changes color. Any ideas?

Please advise! The link you supplied worked for me, so I'm going to guess that since you said you are out of the country, that might be the issue.  Sometimes content is only allowed to be streamed within the borders from where it was produced.  The error message you are receiving might not be very helpful, but I think you are getting it because you are out of the country.

  • Table of contents not linking correctly

Hi, I created a table of contents using a header I created called Chapter Titles. It formatted everything correctly and lists the correct page numbers next to it. The only problem is that when I click on the numbers it sends me to the previous chapter. For example if I click on a chapter that says it starts of page 7, it brings me to the chapter before that is actually on page 3.

    Very odd!
Seems Pages 5 all you do is chase rabbits down rabbit holes.
I like being able to do T.O.C.s for every section but with all the other downgrades in Pages 5 it isn't worth fighting.
Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder and just works, much better than its "upgrade".
Wait for Pages 5 to get out of beta and rate/review it in the App Store.

  • Broken Links and Deleted Template

There was only one internal broken link.
there's maybe a dozen external links with problems.

  • Broken links and javascript on OMWB page

Link to "mysql 5 bundle" (http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/migration/workbench/index.html#MySQL5) goes no where (does not scroll down the page).
Link to section "2.2" also broken. Text is "** For MySQL5 Beta Release see step 2.2" takes you to 404.html
When i tried to download, page complained that i had not agreed to licence, despite the fact that the "Accept License Agreement" radio button was checked.

I have updated the page and fixed the navigation links. Thanks for altering us to this.
The radio license agreement has the "accept" checked by default, you need to click on the "Accept" radio button and will then get a "Thank you..." response. You can then select whatever you want to download.

Check what card you have and then go to the manufacturer's website and check there if your graphics card is OpenGl enabled.
If it is, download the corresponding driver from the manufacturer's website and install it on your system.
Some downloads are compresses (zipped), so you have to unzip and then install.

  • RH8 broken links are bookmarks

I have a lot of broken links that RH says are bookmarks. when I try to restore the link, I get a message saying,
You cannot create a topic from a missing bookmark. Create a new topic with the appropriate file name then add the bookmark to that topic.,
Well I believe I have the topics. I just don't know what to do with these bookmark broken li nks.

    HI Willam,
Thanks for this very logical, simple response. Before I attempted to set the bookmarks in the topics again, I tried something else. In the topic list, I saw that several, about 5, of the topics related to these bookmarks were not there. I imported the topics into the project, but this seemed to have no effect on the missing topics. I suspected that the topics were in the wrong folder, so within RH, I opened Explorer, copied the topics into the path the broken links gave me. all the broken links and missing topics were resolved after I did this.
I don't understand why Rh was telling me the bookmarks were missing when in fact it seemed to be topics that were not in the correct project folder.

  • Make table of contents links keep current zoom level, not zoom out to full page

When Indesign creates tables of contents, they automatically link to the paragraphs the links point to, so that in an interactive PDF, clicks and prods take the user to that page. Great.
What's not so great is, that the hyperlinks / cross-references / jump-links / whatever that are created behind the scenes within the table of contents appear to:
...be automatically set to reset the zoom to full page width
...not be editable in any way
Normal cross references retain the zoom level that the user has chosen, and normal hyperlinks that point to a page in the document have a range of settings about what zoom level change (if any) should be imposed on the user, which can be set to 'inherit zoom'.
How do I set up a table of contents that doesn't annoy users by resetting their chosen zoom level to an artitrary default when they use the interactive table of contents?
I'm really hoping I don't have to ditch Indesign's table of contents feature and create every cross reference manually.

(editted) So it turns out that you can 'expand' a table of contents by copying and pasting it - this fills the hyperlinks panel with links that can be editted (like above) but breaks the auto-update - they're no longer a TOC, they're just a text frame full of links. (I had got different copies mixed up when I thought the frame holding the editable links was also auto-updating)
The greying out of the links was a red herring, just something to do with the fact they were on a master page.
It does mean that one possible TOC workflow is:
Create a TOC on the pasteboard somewhere.
Before finalising the document, update this TOC and alt-drag the 'live' TOC creating an editable 'dead' copy in an appropriate place in the document
Edit the link properties of the links in the 'dead' copy (don't forget that you can select multiple hyperlinks at once by holding down shift, and edit things like the Zoom Setting all at once with Hyperlink Options in the Hyperlinks flyout menu. )
Then, if you make other changes to the document later on, delete the dead copy, update and re-copy the live original, and re-do the changes to the new copy
This isn't a bad method - it just adds about a minute's work each time you export a PDF (delete, update TOC, alt-drag, shift-select the new batch of .XXXX links at the bottom of the Hyperlinks panel, > Hyperlink Options, Zoom Setting  > Inherit Zoom, done).
Alternatively, you could manually build a TOC using cross-references if you want links to the exact position on the page, not just the top of the appropriate page.
