CS5 transform camera raw smart object with mask funniness?

When I try and trasform a camera raw smart object that has a layer mask, the trasform box is not the size of the image, but is about a quarter of the image and it moves up to the upper left quarter of the image. If I first rasterize the smart object then add a mask it transforms just fine. Or if I rasterize the camera raw smart object, then make it a smart object and add a layer mask it transforms normally. So it appears to be an issue with transforming a camera raw smart object with a layer mask that is the issue. Is this a bug?
Thanks,
Steve

I can't post the image publicly because of NDA, but I will pm you a link to the file. I don't always have this issue in cs5. I even tried opening up the same file in a new document and then made a mask and it transformed just fine. But it also is not limited to just this file, I have had this happen with other images as well.
Thanks,
Steve

  • Camera Raw / smart object ?

    Using CS3 / CR / Bridge
    Scenario:
I've shot 500 wedding images, sorted & edited them in Bridge. Now I'll look at each one in camera raw (in Bridge) and make any needed adjustments. I use CR and adjust / sync as many similar files as I can; zipping thru the 500 images quickly and save without opening, then in Bridge > Tools > Photoshop > Image Processor, I use the image processor to process all the 500 images (while I sleep), and save as tiff or psd. I set the CR options to process as a Smart Object. But the files don't process a SO.
    Question:
Is there a way to process /batch process the 500 images and  have them saved so later when I open them, they open as smart objects. I only fine tune the client "Picks" as they don't order all the 500 images shot. Now if I want to alter the color balance, exposure, etc., I can double click the smart object, go back into camera raw and make any adjustments/ refinements, click OK and it updates the file. This mantain's a higher integrity of the file.
In CR I know I can check the box "open as a smart object", but that only seems to apply if I immediately open the file (or files) and then save them. It is not practical or feasible to select 500 files, open and save them at one time. If I save the Raw file(s) to open later, (as in my above workflow) then it will not open as a smart object.
Another way to ask this question:
Why can't I use the Image Processor in Bridge / CR to process my 500 CR files as Smart Objects?
When in CR I can set the options to process as a SO, but that only will process the open file(s) in CR as SO. Not practical to process 500 files.
I checked on the Adobe Exchange but did not find any scripts or actions that would facilitate this.
Does anyone know if what I'm trying to do is possible and how?
    Thanks,
    JeffN

Any thoughts, suggestions, or can this not be done.
I'm pretty sure it's a bug....when recording the action in CS5, if you change the Workflow Options to open as a Smart Object, ALL the settings are hardcoded into the recorded Open action step. This is wrong...if you open an image and change the Workflow OPtions but DON'T try to open as a Smart Object, the Open action is recorded correctly–only the Workflow Options are recorded and when processed the files properly retain their individual original settings. So, the act of changing the Workflow Options to make a Smart Object is incorrectly hard coding the settings in.

  • Bug? Camera Raw Smart Object Can't Be Edited

I have a problem where a raw file placed as a smart object can't be re-edited in CS3. Here's how to replicate the problem:
    1. Open a JPEG or TIFF as a Smart Object (may happen with other file types).
    2. Go to Layer > Smart Objects > New Smart Object via Copy.
    3. Double-click the top smart object and make changes in Adobe Camera Raw.
You should now be able to hide/show the top layer (the final)
to see the bottom layer (the original.)
    4. Double-click the top smart object layer to see that it properly opens Camera Raw allowing you to make edits (this works for now but will stop working when we encounter the bug in a moment).
    5. Save the file and close it.
    6. Re-open the file and double-click either of the smart object layers to edit them. Instead of Camera Raw dialog opening, the image in the window changes to the original unedited version. This is a bug and doesn't happen on every image, but it always happens on at least some of my images.
There have been times when it works, but the next time I open the file it stops working. Some of my files allow editing later without problems. Truly weird. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a workaround?
I have applied all updaters, so that means I am using Photoshop CS3 10.0.1 with Camera 4.4.1 on Mac OS 10.5.2. I have also trashed preferences for Photoshop and Adobe Bridge. I've also Purged the Adobe Camera Raw Cache in the Bridge. This happens on both my Mac Pro (3GB RAM) and MacBook Pro (4GB RAM) so it's not just one machine.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

    Hi Daniel,
Stumbled on your post while searching on a similar issue. I'm not sure if I precisely understand yuour problem, but here's my experience when dealing with TIFFs and JPEGs embedded as Smart Objects in CS3...
If the Smart Object layer contains a TIFF or JPEG that has already been edited and saved in Camera Raw (i.e., the embedded file has Camera Raw XMP metadata in its header), then Photoshop will open the Smart Object's contents in Camera Raw... with one provision. You have to make sure that in your Camera Raw preferences, under "JPEG and TIFF Handling", that both boxes are checked for "Always open JPEG/TIFF files with settings using Camera Raw".
If those boxes aren't checked, when you try to edit the contents of a Smart Object layer containing a TIFF or JPEG with Camera Raw settings in its header, instead of opening the embedded file for editing, Photoshop seems to simply revert to displaying the layer without the settings applied. I'm unsure whether this is a bug or intended behavior, but it seems to be one of the symptoms you describe.
On the other hand, if you make a Smart Object layer from a JPEG or TIFF that does not already have Camera Raw settings in its header, Photoshop CS3 will never open that layer's contents in Camera Raw, regardless of what preferences you have checked. Instead, the contents are opened in a separate window as a temporary .psb file. The only way I've found to do Camera Raw editing in these cases is to export the layer, edit the exported file in Raw, and then re-import it via Replace Contents.

  • Ps CS6 Problem: Transform applied to Smart Object fails to transform an attached Smart Filters Mask

    Ps CS6
    OSX 10.6.8
Problem: Transform applied to Smart Object fails to transform an attached Smart Filters Mask.
I mean a Transform, including Free Transform, as found in the Edit menu.  A simple move by the Move Tool is OK.
A workaround until this bug is squashed is to encapsulate the Smart Object + Smart Filters + Filter Mask inside another Smart Object and transform that.
However, that will not be a satisfactory solution in some cases. If a filter has size parameter(s), e.g. Gaussian Blur radius, a scaling or warping/distorting transform applied after the filter will obviously differ from the filter applied after the transform.
In any case, the workaround is inconvenient to subsequent editing and experimenting with filters and masks.

    R_Kelly wrote:
I don't think that's a bug since the implementation seems to be purposely done.
It's been that way since photoshop cs3.
If its been like that since CS3 then I think it's a bug which remains because nobody (or not enough people) has complained before.

  • Is camera raw filter available with LR 3 or CS5?

Is camera raw filter available with LR 3 or CS5?

There has been a Camera Raw plug-in for Photoshop for many versions by now.
There is a new Camera Raw filter in PS CC—something that allows you to use the camera raw plug-in as a smart filter for a layer.
The Develop panel in Lightroom has the same adjustments as the Camera Raw plug-in for PS.
So depending on what you mean by “Camera Raw Filter” the answer is either LR3-No, CS5-No for the filter in PS-CC, or LR3-Yes, CS5-Yes if you mean the CR functionality.

  • Link Smart-Object Filter mask to transformation of Smart object

Often it would be very nice, if you could link the filtermask of a smart object to the smart object itself. So that when you transform the SM (rotate, scale etc) the filtermask of the smartfilter is transformed, too.

It would seem if a linked layer mask can be transformed with the smart object the filter mask could be linked as well.
I didn't mean the workaround to be vote against the request. But it does have an added benefit. When you transform a smart object with almost any smart filter the appearance of the filter changes. Blurs become more or less blurred depending on the transform. Same with sharpen. If you want the effect of the filter to appear the same after the transform you need to embed it into a new smart object.

  • Linking smart objects with it's layer mask

ther must be a way to link smart objects with it's layer mask without having to rasterize....isn't there?

    You're pre-CS4 right?
    1) Upgrade to CS4
    2) Put SO in a group, link mask to group
    3) ...
    4) Profit!

  • Link a "Smart Object" with his Mask - possible?

    Hello -
Is there a way to link a smart object and his mask?
It's really annoying, because, when I move my smart object, his mask doesn't follow!

At this time, Smart Objects can't have masks linked to them. So place your smart object in a group by itself, then create a mask for the group.

  • Extracting an .xmp sidecar from an ACR-edited RAW smart object layer...

Hello all.  Given the following situation:
Several thousand TIFF files, each containing two RAW files embedded into separate Smart Object layers.  The RAW files were named with sequential numbers prior to being composited into the TIFF files via a script, and the TIFF filenames correspond to those of the embedded RAW files.  The RAWs have subsequently been edited in ACR from within the TIFF files.
I've done a little digging, but I can't seem to turn up answers to several related questions:
    A) Should I wish to re-extract the RAW files from the smart object layers with the edits that have been applied, is there a method of PerLayerMetdata that can be used to extract a complete .xmp sidecar that will be recognized by ACR and associated with the exported RAW?
    B) Should I wish to change the sequential-naming of the parent TIFF files, is there any method to correspondingly change the filenames of the embedded RAWs directly within the smart object layer?  In other words, using PerLayerMetdata, can the filenames of the RAWs be changed without exporting the RAWs using a different filename and then replacing the contents of the smart object layer?
    C) I would ultimately like to be able to save the embedded RAWs as DNGs with their ACR edits applied, if necessaray.  Given a way to accomplish A), above, it would be a fairly simple to export the RAWs and associated .xmp files and then run the DNG converter on the lot.  However, does anyone know of a way to save a DNG directly from the smart object layer?
Any ideas or pointers to existing documentation are much appreciated.

Thank you kindly, Michael.  I see now that the example I was viewing had done exactly what you describe, writing ACR settings into the SO layer's metadata at the time of embedding.  I was only looking at the portion which later accessed those settings using PerLayerMetadata, and I had mistakenly assumed that CS5 was automatically embedding xmp data in this manner, now, when opening or placing a RAW file as a SO.
I don't see a direct way to get at the ACR settings of a camera raw file embedded in a smart object.
This is sort of what I was afraid of.  They're in there, somewhere, but I'm having no luck figuring out how to access them.
If the ACR settings for a RAW smart object are, indeed, not exposed to automation in some manner, I think I must change my workflow such that either: A) No edits are performed in ACR after object embedding; or B) the RAWs are converted to DNGs prior to smart-object embedding so that the ACR settings can be exposed in the exported file.

  • LR4.1 : "Edit-In" "Open as Smart Object with Photoshop..." feature doesn't work with 32bits

    Hi there,
    I am running LR4.1/CS5/ACR6.7 on a Win7 64bits system.
The feature "Edit-In" > "Open as Smart Object with Photoshop..." does work Ok with raw files (.NEF).
However, when i do try to use the same feature with 32 bits .TIFF files (which are output of the LR4.1's "Edit-In" > "Merge to HDR Pro in Photoshop..." other feature), nothing does happen (the Photoshop application windows does open but w.o the image that i've just selected).
I've used search engines and Adobe online help to see if there was any limit preventing the usage of this feature with 32 bits .TIF files but couldn't see such note.
    Thanks for your help !
    Albert

    Thanks Rikk,
That did work with a DNG file :-)
I am working with very huge .TIF files (400MB), so i am wondering if size could be the main issue (although my PC has lots of HW resources).
I will explore the DNG way, a format which seems anyways to be very promising now with LR4.
In case anyone has an idea why it doesn't work the .TIF files, please shoot !

    Hi Chris,
I need a vector smart logo that is on a PSD layer as a vector file in illustrator so I can plot cut on a vinyl cutter. How can I make sure the logo transfers as .ai at the exact size showen in the Photoshop document? I remember doiing this a few years ago but forgot the proceedure. It's probably a very easy step and once I have the answer I'll say "oh that's right I remember now" The export path to Ilustrator only gives me the saved paths in this document.

  • Ps CS6 Problem: Transform applied to Smart Object cannot be repeated on another target

    Ps CS6
    OS X 10.6.8
Problem: Transform applied to Smart Object cannot be repeated on another target.
"Edit > Transform > Again" fails to transform any target after a Transform is applied to a Smart Object. The following message appears:

When ever I have a problem in CS6 and I have many I always test priot releases like cs2 cs3 cs5.  I nevet nitice before you posted this problem the Photoshop has different favlors of Free Transform and that free transform for CS6 has been modified.  Adobe seems to be introducind new improvement matche with new bugs,
Investgating your bug using CS5 I see the following.  There are two types of free transform one type seems to be for smart Object layers and the other for other layer types.  In CS5 you should see a difference in the Option bar for Free transform.
The option bar for layers other then smart object looklike this:
    Transform 9 anchor point icons  X: field Relative icon Y: filed  W: % Constrain icon H: %  Angle ° H: ° V: °
The Option Bar for Smart Object layers look like this:
Transform 9 anchor point icons  X: field Relative icon Y: filed  W: % Constrain icon H: %  Angle ° Check Box Anti Alias (grayed out)
If I use the one for other then smart object layers Transform Again is not gratey out and I can use Transform Again on layers even smart object layers However the anchor point seems to be relative always to the first transformed layer's anchor point
If I use free transform on the smart Object Layer and not have done any transform on a other then smart object layer in this Photoshop session not even in an other document the smart object layer will be tramsformed and Transform again menu item will be grayed out. If any had done a Transform on an layer other then smart object layer even in an other document Transform Again would not be grayed out and could be used on the smart object layer at hand.  The transform would not be the one just done on the smart object layer rather it be the one done to the other then smart object layer.  Seems a bit bazzar to me.  This may be how CS6 is also working.
CS6 also added interpolation method to the other then Smart object layer transform and not the one for smart object layers. To be consuitant Adobe should have also put interpolation into the omart opject transform for Adobe transforms smart opject layer by first rendering the pixels for the smart opject then transforms them like a raster layer.  Adobe did manage to record the interpolation use into an action step.  However I do not know if the made it into Scripting  it did not make it into the photoshop javascript user guide. I will test the scriptlistener plugin to see if it records it for the action manager....
    Message was edited by: JJMack
I have now tested the Scriptlistner Plugin it does record the interpolation for transform normal layers. Still the layer resize method in the Photoshop Javascript user guide has not been change for that support. In the past what I have done is scripting was to save the users default interpolation Photoshop prenerenvr changed the preference to what I wanted to use do the layer transform resize then restored the users interpolation preferance.  Adobe broke that in CS6 if the users defalt preference is what Adobe's defalt is "Bicubic Automatic" an internal Photoshop error occurs. Adobe did not add "Bicubic Autoimatic" to scripting when I try to save the preference scriping has the internal error. There is also no way to set the preference back to "Bicubic Automatic.  I'm also transform smart object layers so I would still have to use the save preference, change preference, transform, restore preferance method.  This works if the users preference is set to some preference other the "Bicubic Automatic"

So to me it look like CS5 and CS6 transform work basiclly the same.  There seems to have been some behavior changes made to CS6 I can not seem to put my finger on as well as the addition of the interpolation method in the option bar. I can't put my finger on it so it may be the same in CS5 and CS6.
It may have to do with the bazar behavior of Free Transform  and Transform Again not being available on smart object layers if no free transform to a normal layer has been done in this Photoshop session  but are available if one was done in any doument. And thet you can start to do a transform on the smart object layer and see the Transform handle but then start using transform Again shortcut Ctrl+Shift+T and watch the old transform being done perhaps rotating some virtual anchor point and not around the acnchor point bing displayed in the Transform bounding box and control points.
    Message was edited by: JJMack
Over in the Adobe Feedback site several issues were posted with CS6 Transform one was marked "Not a problem" by Adobe. One was marked "Solved" by Adobe and the others have no Adobe markings the may on not be a problem
So I beleive there is a bug but I do not think it originated in CS6 the bazar things I see happing also seem to be in CS5.

  • Anyone try Smart Objects with Aperture; is this useful?

Here’s what I did, wondering if this is helpful. I exported a master (which produces the RAW file) to disk.
Open the image in Photoshop using the Aperture “Open with External Editor” command. Now use the Place Command and you can create a smart object with the RAW file. It initially opens Adobe Camera RAW so you can adjust as you wish. When done, you can save this SO in the version.
Go back into that file from Aperture, and if you wish to edit again with Photoshop, you have the option of double clicking on the SO to call up ACR, tweak and save.
So layers are not supported but Smart Objects are multiple versions of a PSD embedded in the original (if my understanding is correct).
Am I crazy or does this allow us to do RAW conversions with ACR but use the rest of Aperture?

    That's a neat variation. Here's mine:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1292903
    Summary:
    1) Export original to a hot folder which opens the file in ACR, convert.
    2) Apple-Tab back to Aperture, 'open in external editor'.
    3) Run an action that copies the image from the ACR conversion into the Aperture version and save. Action is included in the linked thread.
Combining the two approaches could work rather nicely.
Note - once an image has been opened using 'open in external editor' layers ARE supported. From this point on, 'open in external editor' passes the file directly to PS, without flattening. Just watch out for overwrites.

  • Cs5.1 camera raw

I have recently bought a Canon EOS6D and my raw photos will not open in my version of photoshop, which is cs5.1. I have looked at the camera types photoshop cs5.1 camera raw covers, and my camera isn't included. Is there anything I can do to open my raw images?! • Retaining local axis in Transform Mode (non-Smart object)

    Hi guys,
I was wondering if there is any way to track an object's rotation axis something like the difference between Local & Global axes in 3d programs.
I know if I started the transformation as a Smart Objects and keep it as a smart object, it does remember. Is there any other workaround for a non-smart object to retain this information?
Just trying my luck here. Thanks

There is a big difference between a  smart object layer and a raster later. Though a smart object layer seems to behave like a raster layer its operation is very different.  The Pixels rendered by Photo do not change they are only acted on. Everything is recorded for the layer each smart object layer has an associated transform.  If you transform the layer again you actually adjusting the recorded transform your not making a new one.  If you transform a raster layer you wind of with a different layer, Pixels may have been deleted or added you do not have access to the old data except in Photoshop history states till it get deleted.  Smart object data is protected and survive even save in a layered document.
