CS5 vs CS3 with XML

We're on the cusp of switching from CS3 to CS5 and just received a request to do layout from XML files.
I know very little of XML and how to deal with it in InD and will be doing a crash course over the next two weeks, I'm also far more familiar with CS3 both (layout and scripting) than CS5.
Are there any worth while advantages to working with the XML in CS5 over CS3?
Many thanks,
Ken

We have an existing set of sample pages for a series. The client is trying to find the best way to get the back list of the series to the web as well as prepared for traditional book printing and are testing some things, one of which is having the content created and tagged in XML and trying to use that for both getting the product to the web and prepared in InDesign for printing.
So, we have an existing InDesign file that should have all the styles to lay the books out and newly created XML files that we have to import into InDesign.
I'm going to try looking in to the evaluateXPathExpression and try to determine how helpful it might be. Maybe that will make it worth moving to CS5 ASAP.
The looking I've done over the last couple of days has pretty much confirmed your initial assessment of a "world of hurt." Oy.
Thanks,
Ken

  • Integrating Flash CS3 with XML

    Hello, I done a tutorial from learnflash.com on Integrating
    Flash CS3 with XML, and I can't figure out why when the file is
    published the scrollbar component doesn't work.

    Yep, big difference. Flash CS3 is the earlier version of
    Flash, so you can't open CS4 files in CS3. You are probably
    confusing CS3 with AS3, which is supported by both versions of
    Flash CS#.

  • Flash CS3 Default.xml not found, can't open any windows!

    So, here's the story. I am now running CC, but I have a very old Flash file that needs to be updated that uses action script 2. I still have a version of CS3 on my computer, but I get this error when I try to open a file:
    The following panel layout is missing or could not be read:
    /Applications/Adobe Flash CS3/Configuration/Workspace/Default.xml
    The application will not have a correct layout. Please load one from Windows—>Workspace Layout
    I click ok, the file opens, but I am unable to get any of my windows (layer, properties, etc) to appear, and Windows—>Workspace Layout does not exist as far as I can see. The last time I opened this program was probably a few years ago. (Not sure if this is relevant, but I recently got a new hard drive, upgraded to Mavericks, and migrated all the files & folders back to this computer with migration assistant) I just need to make some really quick adjustments to this old flash website, please help!
    thanks

  • Learning to work with XML

    Hello!
    Can anyone point me to some resources/turtorials/books etc from where to learn more about working with XML in indesign?
    So far all I found on the net are some simple tutorials to make business cards and the like..
    I need to make large books (for example, right now i'm working on a cookbook), and i'we seen some amazing examples of what can be achieved using a XML workflow.

  • How can I re-activate my CS3 with connectivity issue?

    I received a new MacbookPro for Xmas , migrated successfully but need to "re-activate" my CS3. when i open the app I get the activation screen but when i click "over internet", it attempts then gives me an "Activation-No Connection" screen that loops if i retry. I have wireless internet- working. I even plugged-in by RJ45 ethernet. Im able to access the Adobe secure (https) site & activation server (2 logos) based on their "test' link. Ive turned off the firewall on the Macbook. But I still get the same error screen- it gives me options: 1) proxy server(don't use) 2) by phone- no longer supported! (I love co.'s that stand by their products, she said sarcastically).
    ANY ideas, thots greatly appreciated. I did notice upon trying to open various CS3 apps that I got a "files moved" notice with a "repair" button- which I did click on but it made no difference. IS IT POSSIBLE that this is a result of the migration? If so, should I uninstall/reinstall CS3 & try to activate?

  • Opening CS5 in CS3 outlines fonts COOP Heavy

    Am preparing to update an agency from CS3 to CS5.5. Finding that saving a Illustrator CS5.1 files down to CS3 outlines one of the fonts that had appearance attributes(all from the top half Ilustrator Effects). They own the font, and I tried with both PDF On and Off(notice blue bubbles at bottom) and got outlined font for Coop Heavy.
    As a test I set Coop Heavy all by itself on a fresh page, and it went over.
    Anyone know how I can save  CS5 to CS3 and not get outlined fonts? Any tips for updating an agency to CS5.1 anyone has found?

    I progressivley dummied down the logo, and it appears that offset path is one thing that causes CS5 to CS3 to outline type.
    Anyone else out there opening CS5 files in CS4 or 3 and finding loss of editablility in files, or a solution for this? Prepress houses are always asking us to save down to CS3, so must be people who know more about this. When you place CS5 files in CS3 seems all font gets oultined. Anyone find any way to stop fonts getting outlined? Before I start rolling out CS5, I need to develop a plan to cause minimum interruption to workflow.

  • CS3 javascript XML and attribute adding.

    I've been trying to get something working in CS3 javascript XML for some time and it is getting really frustrating.
    Say I have:
    var someXML = new XML("<anElement/>");
    someXML.@xxx = "something";
    $.writeln(someXML.toXMLString());
    gives the output I'd expect (<anElement xxx="something"/>);
    But I need the name of the attribute to be dynamic.  As far as I can see I should be able to either:
    someXML.getAttribute("xxx") = "something";
    or
    someXML.@["xxx"] = "something";
    both these cases give an error of 'Cannot set property xxx'.  I'm using CS3 version 5.0.4 (the debug build because most of the time I'm working directly with the API - not through scripting).
    I looking for ideas to try...
    Ian

    Hi Ole, thanks for the reply.
    I am aiming to manipulate XML using standard javascript functions - nothing directly to do with indesign, though other parts of the script does interact with it.  Basically the scripts allow a user to set some configuration options and that is in an XML string format (if it was the indesign XML Hierarchy XMLElements, etc I'm pretty sure I could get things to work - worst case I could add to the scripting support in a plugin and make it work...).
    I had an idea (driving home after a frustrating day), Since the XML I'm processing is small, I can move forward by crudely making a string from the XML object, inserting the attribute into the string and then re-new'ing the XML object.  With large comments about why - unless someone can come up with a reason/fix for the javascript-XML not working (I suppose it may just be the number of InDesign/Extendscript versions I have installed - CS2/CS3/CS4, indesign and server).

  • Bridge opening office files with xml converter

    Adobe Bridge CS3 is opening all my excel files with xml converter and promting me to save as.  How do I switch it to default to Microsoft Excel when opening these files?

    These options are handled in the Bridge prefs under File Associations, but if I remember correctly this is somewhat limited in CS3 since it only handles Adobe files that install their associations. Any other file type is handled by whatever the opoerating system offers. Well, you can always look and give it a try...

  • Missing File - Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 with ASP, Coldfusion, and PHP

    On page 263 of Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 with ASP, Coldfusion,
    and PHP by:Jeffrey Bardzel and Bob Flynn the file called
    countryDetailXML.asp is missing. How can I find that file? Any
    idea?
    Thanks for your help.

    @citaiz,
    That file is created earlier in the lesson in an exercise
    starting on page 257. For the sake of the lesson, you can use
    countryDetail.xml that is included in the lesson 09 start folder.
    It is not important for this lesson that the XML is a static file
    or one generated in real time from the database. The version of
    Spry (1.4) that shipped with DW CS3 used XML data only. The current
    version (1.6.1) can use JSON and HTML tables for the data source as
    well. You can get the latest version of Spry for free at
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/,
    including an extension to update your copy of DW to the latest
    version.

  • How to refresh images placed with XML?

    Hi folks!
    I placed some images and texts with XML to an InDesign (CS5) document. Unfortunately it's possible that the file is modified. In that case I want to start a script which updates the links. But that should happen later. First it's necessary to check if updating is possible.
    For that I modified the file and refreshed my linked file. But all that is replaced are my texts. The images vanished and I had to place them again by hand.
    What am I doing wrong? Could anybody help please?
    With kind regards,

    Ok, maybe somebody knows the problem when I'm posting some images. I made a screenshot of my InDesign XML and after you can see my XML-File.

    Would this book help me learn about Spry and Ajax and how

    You don't need any prior knowledge of Ajax or PHP, but you do
    need to
    know the basics of HTML and CSS. As I say in the
    introduction, "You
    don't need to be an expert, but you do need to have an
    inquiring mind.
    It doesn't teach the basics of web design, nor does it
    attempt to list
    every single feature in Dreamweaver CS3. There are plenty of
    other books
    to fill that gap. However, by working through this book,
    you'll gain an
    in-depth knowledge of the most important features of
    Dreamweaver."

    e-commerce sites, right?
    The book provides detailed coverage of the Spry 1.4 features
    in
    Dreamweaver CS3, which can be applied to any site. With minor
    adaptation, you can also use Spry 1.6. It's important to
    realize,
    though, that the Spry/Ajax features in Dreamweaver CS3 do
    *not* cover
    asynchronous requests to the server. The ability to
    communicate
    asynchronously with the server was added in Spry 1.6. If it's
    asynchronous server calls and responses that you're after,
    your
    programmer will need to dig around in the Spry 1.6
    documentation on the
    Adobe Labs site, and hand-code it.
    The Spry features covered in the book are Spry Effects, Spry
    UI widgets
    (menu, accordion, tabbed panels, and collapsible panels),
    Spry
    Validation Widgets, and Spry XML Data Sets.

    Yes. All the Spry techniques can be used on any web page. It
    doesn't
    need to be a PHP one.

  • Indesign CS3 with Powermath handling

    Hi All,
    I am opening a new topic reg. Indesign CS3 with Powermath Handling.
    Our customer is very specific they want in Indesign CS3 and Powermath for Math handling.
    We are automating a process of handling powermath equations in Indesign, since powermath has ASCII import and Export option.
    We have created a .tbl file which will convert all the mathtype equations to powermath coding automatically, then we flow it in template and just select the text part and we call the powermath import option to convert all the equation in the document to actual, this process is success and its going smooth.
    Now. The actual problem starts------------
    Client needed XML deliverable, all the powermath equations they wanted TeX coding for XML deliverable.
    So I thought that I will put this in this forum to get suggestion reg. this, all the equation and done in powermath with Indesign CS3,
    We can export all the equation back to powermath ASCII, but how do I convert the powermath to TeX.
    kavya

    Hi Kavya,
    "We have created a .tbl file which will convert all the mathtype equations to powermath coding automatically,"
    How you can created .tbl what it meant.

  • Custom action with XML type input and output parameter.

    Hi,
    I want to develop custom action with xml type input and/or output parameter.
    Is there sample code for java side. How is the definition of input and/or output parameter and set/get methods?
    does it need special .jar file to develop custom action like this?
    Thanks.

    Cemil - yes, you can use XML data types.  Use the class
    com.sap.lhcommon.xml.XMLDataType
    for your parameter type.  Here is a snippet from a custom action we use to log XML (instead of just returning the #text node like the default logger does):
    public class XMLLogger extends ActionReflectionBase
        private String source;
        private String eventType;
        private String textMessage;
        private XMLDataType xmlMessage;
        public XMLLogger()
            log = new Logger("UserLog");
            source = DEFAULT_SOURCE;
            eventType = TYPE_INFO;
            textMessage = "";
            xmlMessage = new XMLDataType();
        public XMLDataType getXmlMessage()
            return xmlMessage;
        public void setXmlMessage(XMLDataType xmlMessage)
            this.xmlMessage = xmlMessage;
        public void Invoke(Transaction transaction, ILog ilog)
            StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer();
            sb.append('[');
            sb.append(source);
            sb.append("] ");
            sb.append(textMessage);
            sb.append(XMLUtils.convertXmlToString(xmlMessage));
    XMLUtils is a helper class we wrote - it's just a bunch of standard Java XML boilerplate code.  The important part you need to know is XMLDataType.getDocument() will return an org.w3c.dom.Document.
    I hope that was enough information to help.
