CS5: What could be causing my CPU to spike?

Machine Specs:
Mac OSX 10.6.6
2.66GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon Processor
8GB RAM
Running Adobe CS5 Design Standard
Background story:
I have inherited a magazine from a co-worker. The magazine has been worked on for years by our business and has undergone some changes, but kept its core design/layout. From my observations, before each issue the magazine is stripped and resaved to keep the content and advertising that remains constant. There's a large collection of swatches and styles, some that are used, some that are not. Some ads are created inside the document, but most are placed PDFs. Even some vector logos are imported directly to the document through copy/paste. In the past, the document has been having some issues (crashing, trouble opening) on my co-worker's computer, but has been workable. (He has a 3.3GHz processor, if that helps.)
My problem:
I tried opening the document, and immediately the CPU usage in the my activity monitor jumped to 100%. There's around 5GB of free memory, but the CPU spikes. Indesign will go into 'Not Responding' and not do a thing. If I force quit and re-open the application, the file I intended to open is there as if it was recovered from a program crash. I have tried opening an IDML file created of the same document to ecounter the same problem. Thirdly, I created a new document at the same specs, and imported all styles/swatches and moved the pages fro mthe original document. Same problem once I closed and tried to reopen the document. It's obvious that there is something lurking in this file which is causing problems.
My possible Solutions:
1. Find the problem and eliminate it. This would obviously be best, because there is quite a lot of things in this document to keep.
2. Make do with having to force quit Indesign and reopen it to open the file. This idea makes me a little uncomfortable, but I'm sure that saving before closing would make sure nothing is lost in the recovery, right?
3. Create a new document and layout from scratch, using only required swatches and styles and copy/pasting elements from the other document when required. This may take a little more time than other issues, but could be a healthy step forward.
Regardless of the solution, it has been interesting (and rage-inducing) trying to find what the possible problem could be. Does anyone have any ideas, or has anyone encountered the same problem?

What you have right now is a disaster waiting to happen. It's probably impossible to say with any certainly where the problem is at this point. Repeatedly saving the same document issue after issue allows little corruptions to build up and multiply until one time it will simply fail altogether.
It it were my job, I'd open the file as a copy, then IMMEDIATELY export to .idml. If there are no CS5 -only features in use I'd open that in CS4 and export again, this time to .inx. Open that, or the .idml if you can't make the .inx, in CS5 and save as a reference file with a new name. Hopefully any corrupt styles have been cleaned up. Next I'd start a brand new file with the same page size. If there aren't a huge number to do, I'd recreate all the master pages from scratch, but if that's not practical you can add them in the next step.
Add the new file and the reference file to a Book file, and set the reference as the synch source. Add Master pages to the list of things to synchronize if you didn't make them by hand, then make sure everything else is checked and synch the book, but don't do any numbering updates. Save the new file as a TEMPLATE. Add anything to the template that will remain the same over multiple issues, and start each new issue going forward by opeing the template and saving as the new issue. Stop recycling the old issue over and over.
You can add ads to the template, but I wouldn't since they really arn't the sort of thing that is "static." To speed things up you can make a library or a folder of snippets for them and drag them into each new issue as necessary. This won't really take any longer, once it's set up, than the time it takes to remove unwanted content now. By using the template you are always starting with a fresh second-generaztion copy, which hopefully is clean. If you still find you are having trouble, you may have to rebuild all of your styles from scratch as well. and replace the ones you imported.

    First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
    If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
    Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
    Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
    Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
    Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
    Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
    Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
    Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
    Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
    If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
    Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
    When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

    Thank you for providing all that information about the iTunes issue you are experiencing.  We would first want to rule out any software issues before we can determine if it has to do with RAM.  I found an article that will help you isolate and troubleshoot software issues that could be causing iTunes to behave this way:

  • What could be causing import error?

    I purchased a GoPro HERO helmet-mounted digital camera and connected it to my MacBook (OS X 10.5.8) with iMovie (7.1.4) using a USB cable.
    The camera produces MP4 files which are visible in finder.
    When I open iMovie it identifies and displays the movie clips for importing but at the end of the import process it says "An Error Occurred During Import" and the files are not finally imported.  I tried numerous times, even importing one small clip at a time and get the same message.
    There is no further information on what could be causing this.
    The only way I managed to import these clips was to first copy them to my hard drive and then use the "Import movies" option in iMovie.
    Anyone have ideas why I can't import directly from the camera?

    I changed my directory in Unix to JAVA_TOP and I ran the command as follows -

    Thanks for the suggestion, the next step was to call Apple, who gave me a claim number, which I discovered you must have to get anything done with them.  They refered me to a Apple store or repair center, after some reseach took it to the Computer Store in Mobile, Alabama and they were excellent.  They took pictures of the screen with bug submitted it to Apple who denied the claim but they kept kicking it up to the next level and finally Apple agreed to sent new cover.  The Computer Store had the cover the next day, they changed it out and now I am bug free.  If your in the area of Mobile Alabama you can feel good about getting help from the Computer Store.  For the two folks that responded to my note, Thank You, good comments and good advice.

    Quite a few people automatically assume all Mac A-V software is troublesome junk, & many will leap to the conclusion it is the cause of some problem without considering other potential (& often much more likely) causes, regardless of which A-V product is installed.
    Obviously I hope, not all A-V products are alike, so it doesn't make a lot of sense to me to condemn them all because of problems with one of them. Regarding Sophos in particular, finding first hand reports of it causing problems is quite difficult -- typically, if you ask for the details it turns out to be a second or third hand report & there isn't enough info available to know for certain if it is the real cause or not.
    This is not to say it is impossible for it to cause problems, just that it is prudent to consider all the possibilities before concluding that any one of them is the cause.

    You need to use a newer Mac OS X version. A G4 can be upgraded to 10.5.8(if desired, buy a retail DVD from a source such as Amazon or eBay), but you'll likely find it more cost-effective to buy a secondhand Intel Mac.

  • Logic Pro 8 crashes every time I press "record." What could be causing this?

    I have Logic Pro 8 and opened it today for the first time after updating to Snow Leopard. Logic opens just fine, but if I try to record an audio track it crashes almost immediately (I was just using the built-in microphone, nothing external). It doesn't crash if I record to a midi track. Any ideas as to what could be causing this? I went and updated to 8.0.2 and it still did the same thing. This never happened before. I'm wondering if it's related to using Snow Leopard?

    All your Creations should be fine...
    But just to be Safe, back them up to an External HD and save them as PROJECTS with ALL ASSETS...
    Just make sure to have the LP 8 Serial Number handy for when and if, you are asked for it during the Install...
    Also, after the Install, don't forget to Run Software Update to get the Latest version of LP 8...

    Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
    Perform a "hard reset" on the device by pressing down and holding the home button and the sleep/wake button for up to 30secs. until you see a black screen with the Apple logo, then release.
    Then test to see if it solved the problem.

  • I'm getting a syntax error (#10001) with my AI Group Config. What could be causing it?

    When I go to run my program, shortly after it starts, it spits out an error #10001 involving the AI Group Config.   This is it's suggested explanation:

    First,  i must mention that the way u put it "it spits out an error #10001" sounds horribly good!
    Now to the problem, this error is usuall given if you enter an improper channel number(a string instead of numeric)
