CS6.0.2 Merged clip bugs

Having struggled with my typical editing style using dual sync sound i've been able to replicate a few bugs, by listing them here my hope is to get other editors using "merged clips" with dual sync sound can find a solution around them.  This has come up a few times in the forums but hasn't specifically addressed the bugs.
http://forums.adobe.com/message/4503977
http://forums.adobe.com/message/4676617#4676617
These bugs are with using Merged clips.
1. using the match frame command from a clip in a sequence and then using a replace edit from source monitor on another clip, matches frame on video, but sync is off on the audio.  Using match frame on the newly replaced clip does reconnect to the correct timecode with the audio in sync, however the audio and video in and out points do not line up with the matched frame clip.  So you can't just use the overwrite edit with the matched framed merged clip.  Once you've matched frame with the incorrectly referenced audio, you can not use the replace edit command again, it gets grayed out.
2. This same bug occurs when find an merged clip in the browser, creating in and out points and using the replace clip command from bin. The audio is out of sync and replace edit command becomes grayed out.
3. Once the mismatch in the audio sync has occurred from the replace with match frame, the merged clip in the bin when loaded into the source monitor shows the inpoint and out point of the video, and a separate in and out point of the audio, which is not aligned properly like it was when it was originally created. Only when the in and out point of the audio and video are manually changed does the merged clip become a unified clip again. (one in and out point referencing both audio and video)
if anyone else can replicate this bugs it would be appreciated.
My clips have been manually synced in premiere, would be interested to see if pluraleyes' behavior is any different, but I don't have access to pluraleyes for Premiere if anyone can test.

Unfortunately this is not a spanned clip problem with Adobe or Panasonic. This issue does come up from time to time.
Be sure when you pull the card from your camcorder, you LOCK IT immediately. Then it becomes impossible to change anything on the card purposely or inadvertantly (and as you are aware, changing anything - structure, file names, ANYTHING - on the card will blow the whole operation, so locking it is perfect). Also, sometimes Mac users have problems when they fail to lock their cards, because Mac OS immediately starts writing files to the card if it's not locked.
When you're using the Media Browser in PPro, be certain that you are viewing the clips in AVCHD mode (there's a dropdown option for this right there in the Media Browser). If you're importing individual clips from a single continuous recording, you're NOT in AVCHD mode, and this will always cause the problem you are describing.
I don't mean to lay this out as "you're doing it wrong" but unfortunately this is all very well documented at this point, and whenever there is a problem with spanned clips, it is 100% of the time due to a user that renamed something, moved files, or otherwise didn't follow the complete rules of AVCHD management. I don't normally use a term like 100% (tend to prefer 99.9%) but I say 100% because it is absolute in this case.

  • MASSIVE Merged clip BUG

I've been working on a feature film and recently relinked my project to a different drive. All media files were found and located and everything is linked properly.
Some audio on clips that were merged are now not being recognized by premiere, I can't hear anything coming from them. If I look at the sequence some clips are fine and show the correct audio and some are gone, no waveforms present.
Roughly 50% of my project seems liked it has to be resynced.
Markers on Merged clips don't work either and you can't see thumbnails on merged clips. Adobe please fix this issue, this is super detrimental to long form projects on tight deadlines. I have seen other people with merged clip issues but I have not heard anything from Adobe.
    Thank You

I agree with perplexity over Adobe silence on this issue. I am lucky I caught it relatively early and managed to bail to other editing software, because I won't have three days at the end of my project to track down clips that were lost in the merge.
The fact that they are not addressing this suggests that Adobe wants to sell the feature but not support it. Disappointing.

I can't use JKL or mark an in point on the subclip of merged clip. Is this a bug?

    HERE SHOULD BE YOUR SOLUTION:
Command+Space to bring up universal search, type in "Internet plug-ins"...
You may get multiple choices, one referencing OS-X Lion, perhaps one ref-ing your personal login...Choose one (I started with the main - OS X Lion - one)...it will open on your desktop...If you're like me (or like the Droitetgouche), you've already tried to install it, and it gave you all that crap about "can't be modified"...etc...So delete any of those plug-ins (there may be a few, depending how many installs you've tried), then right-click the "Internet Plug-ins" folder and choose "get info"...I'm not sure why "D...che" (spelling ease) couldn't change permissions...maybe wasn't logged in as the admin?...but click the "lock" symbol in the bottom right corner, unlock it, change ALL permissions to Read & Write, then relock it.  Then open the IKEA dmg again and drag the item into the folder and it should work no problem.
Then quit Safari, restart, and it should let you work.
IF it doesn't, try going back to your universal search and choosing a different "Internet Plug-ins" folder...(Also, if you've tried the install, and you don't find any IKEA dmg's in the "Internet Plug-Ins" folder, you're likely in the wrong folder).
Also, you may want to go back later and restrict the read/write permissions when you're done with IKEA.
It worked for me, let me know if it works for you.

  • Problem with Clip Usage and merged clips in CS6

The 'Clip Usage' drop-down menus don't seem to work in Premiere CS6 for merged clips. The info bar at the top of the project window correctly lists the number of times the viedo and audio from the clip has been used, and the downward-pointing arrow appears, but when you click on it... nothing happens. Same's true of the 'Video Usage' column in the main body of the project window. Non-merged clips work just fine.
Anyone know if this is just a problem with my project, or if it's a bug in Premiere? Had a lot of trouble with merged clips in CS5.5, and was hoping they'd be solved by CS6 - I've been using Creative Suite for a long time, and the lack of good merged clips support was always one of the challenges in persuading other indie editors to switch over from FCP...
    Thanks!

...and the lack of good merged clips support was always one of the challenges in persuading other indie editors to switch over from FCP...
I guess they just have to weigh that up against the lack of support they got from Apple for FCP in its entirety.

  • Merged clips - are they all bugs or is there something wrong with my system?

I have to use merged clips to sync video and audio because making every clip a sequence is too cumbersome and doesn't give me thumbnails to help choose my shots. Apparently, merged clips are very buggy. I can't use colored markers because they don't get saved on merged clips. I can't use match frame on merged clips because they don't find the correct frame. I can't set a poster frame on a merged clip except with the "in" marker. Are all those problems bugs, or is there something wrong with my specific system. I trashed preferences to fix another problem unrelated to merged clips, but that didn't solve any of the clip problems.

I don't believe there's anything wrong with your system.

  • Merged clips and modified audio channels bug/issue

My problem is that if I create a merged clip and modify it's audio channels Premiere (both CC and CC2014) does not respect the modification under specific circumstances. These circumstances are: if I use keyboard shortcuts or the source window buttons for overwrite/insert to cut the merged clip into a timeline. However, if I drag & drop the clip from the source window or from a bin into the timeline Premiere will respect the audio channels set through modify audio channels.
Here are steps needed to create my problem. You will need a video clip and an audio clip with at least two channels to reproduce this.
    1. Create a merged clip from the video and audio. Does not matter if you have "Remove audio from AV clip" enabled or not.
    2. Right click on the merged clip in the bin and select Modify -> Audio Channels.
    3. Set the merged clip's audio channels to Number of Audio Tracks: 1, Channel Format: Mono. Set the source channel for Audio 1 to anything except Channel 1. Click OK.
    4. Make sure you have the merged clip open in the source monitor. Use keyboard shortcuts (. or ,) or the insert/overwrite buttons in the source monitor to cut the clip into a sequence.
    5. The merged clip in the sequence will use channel 1 for audio, even though it has been set to use another channel.
    6. Now try drag & dropping the merged clip from either the source monitor or from a bin into the sequence. It will now use the audio channel that has been set through modify audio channels.
My workaround is to use drag & drop for now for affected clips, but in the long run this is a pain in the backside.
My question is if this is something that affects other users as well. And while I'm waiting for a fix, if anyone has any suggestions on how to get modified audio channels to work properly, I will gladly listen.
I have filed a bug report for this. I have reproduced this on multiple Windows 7 machines with Premiere Pro CC and on two Macs with both CC and CC 2014.
EDIT to add: I have been in discussion with Rameez from Adobe about this through the support chat and have been told that this is working as intended. He suggested I post a thread about it to see how other editors feel about the functionality. I personally feel that the way it works now makes no sense at all. If others feel the same way, maybe this issue can be fixed in a future update. So please make your voice heard.
EDIT to add: In most usage this might not be an issue at all. But if for example you have external audio on multiple channels and to make sure you have a clean timeline, you wish to remove extra tracks from your merged clips and those extra tracks happen to be any track before the last one(s), you will find that editing the merged clip in in any other way than drag & dropping it in the sequence will result in you losing those last tracks instead of any tracks in the middle that you have disable through modify audio channels. I would think that the audio channel modifications should work no matter what way you cut the merged clip in.

Going to try, but here is my workflow and have not encountered any problems until this last P/U days footage.  I've been doing things this way because I found having all files in the project was causing it to crash constantly when I was working.  I have a new I7' processor IMac with 24 gigs of RAM.  And since Premiere does not allow you to have multiple projects open at the same time (Wish this would change.  Avid and FCP both allowed multiple projects) I have to do things this way.
    Pre-workflow Project File
Label all Video and Audio files to match Scene #'/Takes
Set in points on all video and audio to reflect slate
    Merge Clips
    Working Project File
Import only Merged Clips into Project.  Either via import or copy/paste
Now I've done this workflow from just about the very beginning.  Deleting all of the original source video and all audio clips from my working project so only my bins containing my merged clips remain.  Have had no problems and edit has been smooth.  Did a pickup day last week, followed same steps as I've done in the past, imported the merged clips into my working project and the clips have the audio set to none by default.  Now once I go into the sequence I can manually set it and it's there but I cannot play audio in the source monitor which is how I edit, there's no reason I should have to go back to the crappy FCP way of editing doing the copy and paste from a sequence.

  • Premiere CC - Merge Clips repeatable bug crash!

I have been editing a feature film since the start of this week and have found a huge bug and proble with Premiere CC. This has been repeatable for me every time.
I am working on a brand new install of windows 8, all updated, and 64GB of RAM.
I am working with Epic footage shot 5k 2.4:1
Sound was recorded as separate WAV files each video clip has either 1, 2 or 3 mono WAV files (Merged) to them.
    Here is the problem:
When working with all merged files, everything works fine, but if I try and bring in any clip that is not a merged file things get crazy. I can work fine unless I select or try to move a merged clip and a non merged clip at the same time. So if I select all on the timeline and only have merged clips, no problem. If there is even one non merged clip on the timeline and I select all, I get an instant Premiere Pro CC has encountered an error, and closes out premiere.
    My temporary workaround:
If I merge an audio file, like a music file/ ADR or sound effect with a color slug, and just select the audio file to bring into the timeline, everything is fine.
Same goes with video clips. If I have an MOS clip, I can simply merge it to any random audio file, then just bring in the video file and everything works fine. I can select the whole timeline and nothing crashes. But if I forget even once, Boom Premiere shuts down. . . very frustrating.
Thanks for any insight that may be provided in this situation
    Stefan

    Hi Kevin,
Unfortunately, no audio syncing occurred with multi-cam on 2 different formats (MPG and MP4). I did find out how to view the multi-cam sequence though.... You need to have the track with the multi-cam sequence selected.  If it's not selected, the preview window is blank.
But Premiere still can't sync audio with all formats I've tried.

  • Replacing Footage in Merged Clips cs6

Is there any way to replace footage of merged clips in cs6?

When I right click on a merged clip in the Project window, Replace Footage and Replace With Clip are grayed out, unavailable. Are you guys able to do this with a merged clip? Maybe it's a setting I've missed.
When I right click on a merged clip in the Source Monitor, Replace Footage and Replace With Clip are not in the menu.
If I right click on a merged clip in an open sequence, I have the option of Replace With Clip from the source monitor, but that's not what I need to do.

  • After using Merge Clips in CS6, the resulting file now has two audio tracks

    Hey guys,
I'm running into a weird problem after using the Merge Clips option. I have my video and audio selected, I've already moved the audio so they're both synced. It looks like this:
Then I use Merge Clips and pull the new file into a new sequence which in turn looks like this:
I checked the audio channels for both and apparently the merged file separated the left and right audio channels into two separate streams as opposed to using the single stream for both channels like the original.
Anyway to prevent it from doing this?

    So according to Adobe's website: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WS2bacbdf8d487e582-73725e6a12e5a6165d0-7f ff.html
At the very bottom they list limitations, one of which being "Merged clip audio results in mono track audio only."
Which I was familiar with before posting this. It doesn't seem however that the two tracks are mono it looks like they are two separate stereo tracks. If I mute one I still get audio in both speakers even though I muted the "right" track.
Here's what they look like in the audio mixer
The original only has the left most track.
I guess the only thing to do is just deal with it or render out each clip uncompressed to have that single audio channel.

  • Merged clips audio not playing

Is there a reason why my merged clips no longer play audio?
Also is there a way to batch merge clips? I had to individually sync my whole project one video/audio clip at a time...a little disappointing to do all that work and come back to my project where the audio won't play.

Might be a good idea for a feature request.
Adobe - Feature Request/Bug Report Form
On the not playing issue, I'm sort of stumped.  It's just always worked for me, and it's not an issue I recall seeing reported here by others.
    Maybe try recreating the merge?

  • No three point edit with merged clips in Premiere Pro CC 7.2?

    Hello Premiere Folk,
            I've recently, as of last night, updated to Premiere Pro CC 7.2.  I'm currently cutting a feature using merged 5K red raw clips.  We were expereicning some weird things but were able to work around them.  The update fixed to major problems we were having;
    1. Bloating projects going from 808kb to 5mb for no reason.
    2. Not being able to perform a match frame on merged clips.
The update fixed these issues, but don't throw on your party hats just yet.  Within this update a fuction CRUCIAL to any editor has been taken away after you've performed a merged clip function... THE EDIT!  Any time I make an in and out point in my source with a merged clip and an in and out in my timeline and try to do an insert edit via a hotkey, it just edits the entire clip in the timeline starting with a radnom in point!  I was able to set an in and out in my source and just edit into the timeline but even that function has been taken away.  Adobe please fix this!  Yes the match frame with a merged clip works but dont take away editing basics!

This bug is NOT FULLY FIXED.  I'm on a tight deadline so i'm not looking very hard online to see if i'm alone - so please forgive me for just posting here...
I'm using CC7.2.1 it's 1/21... very grateful that match frame FINALLY works on merged clips, but, again, this insert/overwrite bug is only PARTIALLY FIXED.
Insert/overwrite with merged clips on 3-point edit now works, but ONLY when cutting in BOTH merged video+audio... if you're just trying to cut in the audio from a merged clip using a 3-point/4-point edit via hotkey, it's a no-go.
I, for example, needed to re-cut in audio under some video with effects on it. So, I unpatched the video source completely and patched source audio tracks 1-4 to the appropriate sequence tracks. Upon hitting insert or overwrite multiple times, nothing responds. The only way to cut anything in from the source (merged clip) was to patch the source video back into the timeline on an unused video track, then cut ALL the tracks from the source in, I then had to delete the video track re-link the now free audio to the original video. Not a big deal, but annoying enough & waste of precious time on tight deadline.
So, yeah, I have a workaround but is still not appropriate to have a core function not work properly. Especially when I'm working with a very complicated timeline.
That said, thanks for keeping on top of our gripes, Mark.

  • Merge Clips Timecode Errors

PP 2014 on iMac running 10.9.5 -- latest update of PP2014.
Synchronizing clips in the timeline, using double-system sound as fourth channel as it has translation track for foreign-langiage interview. Once synched, Merge Clip.
New Merged Clip is created. Time code does not match TC of video source shown in 'Overlays'. Two completely different TC readings on same clips, pointing to identical media. Even though Sequence and also original video are non-drop, Merged Clip insists on drop frame.
Reading in Bin window also incorrect in terms of TC.
Nothing here about the issue, though many forums online have discussions about the bug -- and it seems to be a major bug that has been unresolved for at least three releases.
Anyone here have experience with this problem?
    Thanks --

  • Trimming tool problems with merged clips

I'm trying to edit a filmstyle sequence with merged clips (created video and audio synched, then merged into new clips). This works fine, except when I try to trim edits in the sequence - the trim tool works, but the picture in the left and right trim windows jump to different parts of the clips being trimmed, and do not show the correct frames being trimmed. The trim tool works fine when used with unmerged clips, but somehow can't seem to work with the synched up clips
The footage being edited was shot on RED and is in pro rez 4:4:4 format.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is this a bug, or is there a way around this? Thanks for any pointers...

I created a new user account and trashed my preferences and I have the same problems. I created a new project, and new sequences. Same problems.
It only happens with 23.98 (batch reverse telecined using Cinema Tools) NTSC DV clips that have been merged with separate 24-bit 48 khz Quicktime audio clips (converted from BWF using BWF2XML). Clips that were captured from the tape with audio and video simultaneously don't have this problem. The discrepancies between the actual amounts trimmed and the white numbers in the trim windows are consistent. If it's off by 6:10 on a clip, every time I try to trim that clip it will be off by the same amount. But the number varies from clip to clip. It's generally 5-8 seconds.
If I try to trim only the audio, I don't have any trouble. If I trim the audio and video at the same time I don't have any trouble. It's only when I trim the video on its own. If I use the original video clip before it's merged with an audio track then it trims fine. If I cut the merged clip into a sequence then delete the audio track from the sequence the problem remains.

  • Merge clips and preserve audio clip names?

    Hey Guys,
I'm about to start editing a new project of mine that I just shot.  I used Premiere to edit my last project and loved it, save one problem I had after using the "Merge Clips" feature to sync my audio.  In order to save time, I used Merge Clips to sync my picture and sound rather than do it manually.  The feature worked really well, but I didn't notice until it came time to export my OMF that the "Merge Clips" feature had renamed all of my audio clips to the same name as the video clip it was sunc to.  This resulted in many broken links in the OMF.
Is there any way to use "Merge Clips" or a feature similar to it, that preserves the names and metadata of the master clips you're syncing?  I might just do it all by hand to be safe.
    Thanks,
    Joe

I do believe we've uncovered (yet another) bug. For the life of me, I couldn't get a video to sync to its respective WAV. The audio from both sources was clean and clear; if Premiere couldn't auto sync this, it couldn't sync anything...
Then the funny part: it could sync everything else together perfectly (DSLR, GoPro, HDV). I must admit I was impressed, GoPros record fairly horrible audio- but Premiere managed to sync them  accurately and quickly with the other cameras. It just treated the external audio as foreign and refused it.
Can someone from Adobe chime in? I'm here for questions.

  • Out of sync indicator with merged clips?

Hi. I'll edit a fifteen minutes short film soon and I'd like to work with Première CC.
The film will be shooted with the new Sony F55 so I'll have to manage RAW files and xavHD files. I made some tests and Premiere read them perfectly.
But ... My problem is this:
I'll use the automatic audi sync to match my audio and my video. Then I'll merge them to have synced files.
I noticed that, once merged, there is no more out of sync indicator! Or is it?
I can't edit a complete short film if I don't have the out of sync indicator. It would be too dangerous.
It means that I'll have to work with the dinausor fcp7 with transcoded Applepro res files ... again!
I read that I could use Pluraleyes first, then bring the synchronized rushes into Premiere CC. But I think that it's a little bit stupid to be obliged to spend 200 euros  and to loose time copying all the rushes knowing that Premiere could do it immediately
    Any solution?
    Thanx for help
    Marc

That's not the only thing missing with merged clips.  Copied from my previous discussion:
    No Match Frame
No Replace Edits (picture matches, but audio gets out of sync)
And for that matter, NO out-of-sync indicators at all.  None.
No making SUBCLIPS in the project panel (via source panel ins and outs).  A subclip gets created, but it's not the part you selected.
No retention of MARKER comments.  Once you select a new clip, the comments go POOF!  Gone.
I just cut a 10 minute dialogue short with merged clips, and I can't think of a single time I knocked audio out of sync.  But I was prudent in my technique.
If you need the functionality, 1) file a bug report and 2) use the PluralEyes method.
