CS6 64-bit HDR Pro producing corrupted merge

Running CS6 Basic on W7-64bit. I'm not a frequent user of CS6, mostly Photoshop Elements does all I need, but I've been reworking the CS5 Classroom in a Book exercises to refresh my CS6 knowledge.
I've reached the exercise (page 139) where multiple images of a model are merged using File> Automate> Merge to HDR Pro... but getting a weird result in CS6 64-bit. I've tried the two suggestions seen in this forum (resetting preferences, ensuring images are displayed in tabs) but neither has worked. My graphics drivers are up to date as are all Windows updates.
If I run the same images through Merge to HDR Pro in the 32-bit version of CS6 its perfect.
Here is what I'm getting in 64-bit - any suggestions?
Cheers,
Neale

The photos are those supplied by Adobe on the DVD accompanying the Classroom in a Book book. There are differences, shown better in this screenshot of the sources:

I've reached the exercise (page 139) where multiple images of a model are merged using File> Automate> Merge to HDR Pro... but getting a weird result. I've tried the two suggestions seen in this and the main Photoshop forum (resetting preferences, ensuring images are displayed in tabs) but neither has worked. My graphics drivers are up to date as are all Windows updates. It's very weird as I'm sure when I tried this exercise a year or so ago it worked fine. I did spot that there was a recent Photoshop update - could that have broken it?
Here is what I'm getting - any suggestions?

Interesting - with the clean install I also let it install CS6 32-bit version as well (I've got more disk space now than I did a year ago). In the 32-bit CS6 Merge to HDR Pro works fine!
Does that give anyone ideas as to what the problem could be?

  • CS6 32-bit HDR files open as 8-bit in Camera Raw 7.3

As the title says my 32-bit HDR files open as 8-bit in Camera Raw 7.3.  I have a Win 7 32-bit system.  I create the 32-bit HDR and then save it as a 32-bit TIFF but when I open it in PS CS6 via Camera Raw 7.3 it comes in as only 8-bit.

As far as i know acr won't output an 32 bits/channel file (hdr), but you should be able to change acr so photoshop gets a 16 bits/channel image by clicking on the
Workflow Options at the bottom of the acr dialog and set the depth to 16 bits/channel.

  • Photoshop CC 2014: HDR pro trying to merge 3 pictures part way through process stops.

HDR pro gets part way through the process then stops as if nothing is open and I can carry on working in PS as if nothing processing. Have closed and opened again and shut down and restarted computer, also waited for a long time but still nothing happens.

I copied that .jsx file to a new name "Xbytor Image Processor Pro.jsx" edit that file changed the string Dr Browns services to "Xbytor Image Processor Pro" then commented out all the code that added tools menu items but "Image Processor Pro" and I put that file into
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Startup Scripts CC\Adobe Bridge" even though Bridge CC is 64Bit seems to use theat location.
Bridge CC was updated by the creative clouds update and opens Photoshop CC 2014 now

  • Photoshop CS6 32 Bit HDR crashes on MAC issue

    Photoshop keeps crashing every time I convert a 32 bit image to 8bit. I am using Photoshop CS6 v13.0.4 x64 on MAC OS X 10.6.8.  I goto Image>Mode>8bits/Channel.
When the Merge HDR images Dialogue Box comes up I click "Merge".
At the following window about HDR Toning it immediately crashes. (immediately as in, a second after I took this screen capture)
When i click "Don't Merge" it works fine, so it has something to do with the HDR Toning editing capabilities.
I have had problems before with CS6 working with 32 bit images on my Mac. I posted on the Adobe forum not to long ago about an issue with using content aware fill. It would render black within my selection. However it worked fine on Windows.  In addition some who relied who also used MAC OS X 10.6.8 did it an it worked fine, however, he was using Photoshop CS6 v13.0.1 x64, while I am using v13.0.4 x64.  So I think something broke in the later updates for PS CS6 for MAC.  If I were to reinstall Photoshop would that revert it to v13.0.1?

A reinstall will give you 13.0 which you'll need to manually update to 13.0.1.

  • Merge to HDR Pro is resulting in a different image, and the 8 bit and 16 - bit sliders don't preview

In Cs6 whenever I touched any of the sliders the image in the preview panel changed quite nicely, now when I start the HDR Pro it comes up with a black image in the preview panel. Thats easy to fix though I switch from 16 bit or 8 bit to 32 bit the preview shows up and I can click on the 16 or 8 bit modes and it shows a preview. Then when I adjust any of the sliders nothing happens. I can play with the sliders as much as I want nothing happens. I have been using the 32 bit mode in cunjunction with the 'tone in ACR' setting which gives great results, but now I wanted to play with the scott5 preset. If I click ok it creates the image beautifully. So not only won't it preview but my image is completely different to what is in the preview panel.

I am looking forward to an anwer concerning the HDR preview-result-difference as well... Since some posts suggest to check out the color profile of the input files, i did so: they are both sRGB. And the immense change of saturation and brightness (in other examples even worse than below)  couldn't be explained by a different profile anyway, IMHO.

  • Bridge to PhotoshopCC merge to HDR Pro is failing

This seems to have occurred since the latest update had corrupted my CC and I needed to uninstall and reinstall all of my apps. This has been a very frustrating bit of work trying to get everything working again.  Currently when I try to merge to HDR Pro in bridge (Camera raw) with three bracketed photos it starts and gets to the point where the HDR load screen would come up, but it just gives me a blank photoshop screen.  Any suggestions?

  • How much of the RAW tonal range is conserved when using "Merge to HDR Pro"?

    Hello,
I am wondering how much tonal range is saved when making a HDR image with Photoshop? I have three photographs with an EV diference of 3. I can combine them into one HDR file just fine, but I can't turn one of them into an HDR file. This has made me wonder the following. If Photoshop is unable to turn one RAW image into a 32-bit image, then how much range is lost in the conversion process? If I try to open a RAW file in Photoshop for saving into a EXR. file for instance then I notice that Photoshop simply turns my image into an ordinary 8-bit per channel image.
I am using a camera with a very good CMOS sensor and the RAW data that my camera produces is of a very high tonal range. It would be a shame if Photoshop discards said range. This is a question that is very hard to Google since everyone that is using HDR is obsessed with tonemapping. I have to clarify that I don't care about tonemapping I just need the range. I would love to have an official Adobe employee answer some of my questions.
    So these are my questions:
Why can't Photoshop turn a single RAW file into a 32-bit image by using HDR Pro?
Does the fact that Photoshop can't turn a single RAW into a 32-bit image mean that all the range is lost when merging many RAW files?
Does anyone know of a way to capture the full dynamic range of a single RAW image without using time consuming nonsense like virtual bracketing?
If there is a way. How would you combine many 32-bit images into a single 32-bit image in order to maximize range.
Why is no one else wondering about these things?

  • Ugly banding in sky (32-bit HDR)

I've seen this a few times now, and decided to ask if anyone else has come across it.
When developing 32-bit HDR images in Lightroom (merged in Photoshop) I sometimes get these discoloured bands across the sky. (Top left corner.)
I tried to see if any of the sliders (clarity/shadows/highlights/etc) caused these coloured bands, but they are there even if I reset everything and just lower the exposure to get the colour back in the sky:
For comparison, here is the -3 EV exposure which was part of the (three-frame) HDR. As you can('t) see, there is no banding going on here:

Canon only offers this capability to pros shooting 1 series bodies, but you can still shoot six images almost as fast with other bodies like your 7D.
Adjust all the camera settings normally used for HDR shoots. Next set Exposure Comp./AEB for ±2 EV exposure bracketing, shift it -3 EV (-5, -3, -1) and save to Camera User Setting C1. Next shift the ±2 EV bracket to +3 EV (+1, +3, +5) and save to custom function C2. Shoot the first bracket with Camera User setting C1, select C2 and shoot the second bracket. You will have six 2 EV spaced exposures spanning 10 EV (-5, -3, -1, +1, +3, +5) from which you can select the best three, five, or even all seven for the HDR merge.
You could also use a ±1 1/3 EV bracket, which will give you six images spanning  6 2/3 EV. This is more than the 6 EV range you're using now and with less than 1/2 the EV spacing. You can select the best five images based on the scene exposure, or use all six.
This of course assumes you don't need the two custom functions for other purposes and are using a tripod. I use a Canon RC-6 remote to help prevent tripod shake. You must set the camera's drive mode to 10 sec. or 2 sec Timer/Remote Control and set the RC-6 remote switch to the lower setting ( not 2 sec. delay). Canon's documentation on remote usage isn't very detailed so it took me a while to figure this out.  This also works best when shooting tripod mounted without the remote, since the 2 sec. delay lets the tripod settle after pushing the shutter button with your finger.
There are more costly alternatives like the 'Promote' remote controller or running tethered with a laptop.

  • HDR Pro Sliders

The sliders in Photoshop CS6 HDR Pro are not interactive. For example, experimenting with the Shadow Slider, I select the percentage adjustment and then, using the up and down arrows experiment with the best setting, Unfortunately this does not work to see the change you need to click on the adjustment slider. Sort of defeats the purpose of being able to use the up and down arrows.
All of the controls in HDR Pro operate this way, the up and down arrows work just fine in other modules
    Anyone else notice this?
Working on a series of HDR panoramas so at this time giving up with HDR pro as it's taking too much time and is frustrating, so going back to Photomatix...

  • CS6 - Merge to HDR Pro fails to complete

I'm running Win 7, 32-bit and just picked up LR 4.1 and CS6.  I've updated everything to the latest versions.  I'm shooting with a Nikon D800.
I'm trying to merge 7 pictures using Merge to HDR Pro.  I've tried this using raw files (NEF) and converted JPG files.  I select the 7 files, PS comes up with the first picture showing.  It starts to process the second picture and the filename changes to something like Untitled_HDR1.  After a few seconds, that picture goes away and nothing else happens.
Have I got my settings screwed up?

    From March 2012 Forum thread
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4339337#4339337%234339337
Although you are on Win7 32-bit, this may apply to your issue.
There are some 32-bit XP-specific issues we're addressing before shipping that are related to memory.
I'm pretty sure that's the issue you're running into. I'm sorry for the trouble it's causing you.
Here are some suggestions to work around the issue. In the meantime, we'll work on helping XP-32 & Photoshop play nicely.
Try a different memory setting (65%-ish. Try to give Photoshop ~1G and leave the rest to the system). Restart.
    Quit unnecessary applications.
Try quitting Bridge and running Merge to HDR from File > Automate > Merge to HDR
Other things to test out in the Performance Preference panel
             •  Try a larger or the largest Tile Size - you've got it set to smallest. Not sure which is better for this case.         •  Try lowering History States to 5.  Other, less likely, suspects:
Corrupt prefs: Reset preference file: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4209421#4209421
Same-named drive: Be sure there is no other directory is named identically to a folder in the Photoshop app path.
Conflict with "Open Documents as Tabs = OFF" Prefrence (Interface) setting.
Please let us know what ends up working best for your system.
    Thanks,
    Meredith
Also, if Remove Ghosts = ON, it sometimes selects an extreme exposure as its base image (noted by green frame around the thumbnail in the dialog). Try selecting a different base image - just click on a different thumbnail.
Are you still having issues after updating (Photoshop: Help > Updates...) ?
Do any of these solve the problem for you?

  • Merge to HDR pro is producing very washed out results. Resulting images look terrible and bleached.

I posted here before, but was directed to go through the help menu in Photoshop, which brought me back here!! Please Help Me!
Merge to HDR pro is producing very "bleached" and overexposed images.
    Thank you,
    Rob

Thank you for the reply, Ed. I've delved into the PS preferences as best I could but did not see anything related to this issue. I have ACR set to convert at 240 dpi with ProPhoto color space and have never encountered this problem under typical 16 bit conversions from RAW to psd. For some reason PS sets the document size of 32 bit images to 3.5' x 5' @ 72 dpi which results in an extra step to the already time consuming workflow when creating such images in PS.
Perhaps this is an issue Adobe can address in a future update? They did a good job addressing other issues such as the disappearing RGB data in the info pallette when adjusting images with curves. It appears that the Windows version of PS has too many non-fatal (but annoying) flaws that aren't present in the Mac version.

  • CS6 Problem - Merge to HDR Pro - "Remove ghosts" Process 2012 ACR7

Hello! I found a problem when creating images HDR of RAW
When using the "Remove ghosts" - the problem is distortion image, clipping highlight and shadows.
    File>Automate>Merge to HDR Pro>Sourse files>Browse>OK>Merge to HDR Pro>Mode: 32-16-8 Bit>Remove ghosts - Problem!!!
This is a problem only in the 2012 process ACR7, the process 2010 ACR7 there are no problems.
    My system - Win 7 SP1, x64 version CS6.
    Sample images:
    1. No "Remove ghosts"
       - Process 2012 ACR7. No problem, it's good
      - Process 2010 ACR7. No problem, it's good
    2. EV +2. "Remove ghosts".
         - Process 2012 ACR7.  Problem - distortion image and clipping highlight.
       - Process 2010 ACR7.  No problem, it's good
    3. EV 0. "Remove ghosts".
       - Process 2012 ACR7.
      - Process 2010 ACR7. No problem, it's good
    4. EV -2. "Remove ghosts"
    - Process 2012 ACR7. Problem - distortion image and clipping shadows
        - Process 2010 ACR7.  No problem, it's good

I am having a similar problem with Merge to HDR from Lightroom 4 to CS6.
First of all, here is the dark exposure processed entirely in Lightroom.  As you can see there is good shadow detail and no blown highlights:
    I
Now here is the image using the darkest and lightest (of 3 exposures) manually blended.  Here the shadow detail is naturally better (although it isn't obvious on the small image shown here):
Now here is the image from HDR Pro with remove ghosts on the darkest of the 3 images.  As you can see there is very bad (practically no) shadow detail (look at the hillside on the left):
Here is the HDR Pro with remove ghosts on the middle of the 3 images.  As you can see the clouds are badly blown/posterised:
And here is the HDR Pro with remove ghosts on the most over-exposed image.  As you can see the sky is completely messed up:
Essentially unusable for this sort of image.  Hope this gets fixed soon!!

  • CS5 Merge To HDR Pro hangs Photoshop (Win 7, 64-bit)

    Hi,
I've had Photoshop CS5 Extended for about 2 weeks. I'm using the 64 bit version with Windows 7 64 bit. So far it's been working ok but I'm now getting an issue with 'Merge to HDR Pro'. Once I've entered my settings and clicked 'ok' Photoshop stops responding. I have to start the 'Task Manager' and force quit Photoshop.
Is this a common issue or am I the only one whose getting it? Is there a solution?
    Thanks

    Thanks for your response.
In answer to your question I'm not entirely sure. My machine doesn't crash. When I go to Automate/Merge to HDR Pro I can browse to my files, choose them and alter the settings in the HDR Pro window until my image looks the way I want it to. But when I click 'OK' the process of generating the HDR file seems to begin then stop. I can see my original images in the layer stack inside Photoshop and an empty layer at the bottom of the stack called 'Merge to HDR Pro'. It doesn't get any further than that. The only thing I can do is go to my Task Manager, where Photoshop will be listed as 'Not Responding'. I use RAW files from my Canon 40D.
I can't give you very precise details about my system because I had it custom built and I'm not very good with technical stuff. I can tell you that it is a 64 bit machine with a 120Gb solid state primary HD running Windows 7 64bit,  and 2 1Tb secondary drives. It currently has 6Gb RAM. The motherboard is overclocked. My gfx card is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 295.
    Thanks again.
    S.
