CS6 Beta questions: skin tones, camera calibration in Camera RAW

While this is supposed to be a fully functional version, I am missing the Patch and Move content aware tools, the Skin Tones function does not work, there is no camera calibration except for Adobe Standard available under Camera RAW 7.0 and none of the links uder "Help" work.  When I try to look for updates I am assured that I have the latest version.  Does this sound right to you?  Am I just not looking in the right places for these features or are they indeed not available in Beta, in which case it is of course impossible to try them out.

Thanks very much, Pattie.  I was not holding down the Healing brush.  That all works fine now.  However, what about camera profiles for camera calibration in Camera Raw 7.0 and why don't the skin tones work?  I am using a reasonably new HP laptop with plenty of horsepower and Windows 7.  Here is my system info.  Can you help further?

  • Camera calibration in Camera Raw 6.7 VS 7.0*

    Hi again!
I noticed that in cameraw raw 7.0, under camera calibration, my only choice is Adobe standard. I get the same for me Fuji X100.
In the 6.7 version witn CS6, for my Canon 5d Mark III (same with the Mark II), I had the full array: Standard, Faithful, Landscape, etc.
Have I forgotten something under "camera raw preference"? I included "make default specific to camera serial number".
    Thanks,
    Marcel

See this link for details on camera support in Camera Raw versions:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2012/03/raw-support-in-lightro om-and-camera-raw.html
    Snip taken from link above:
You’ll also note that ACR7, available with Photoshop CS6 beta, is lagging the most in updated camera support.  This is based on when we lock down or “bake” the code for each release.   Even though ACR7 was only released last week it was “baked” before Lightroom 4.0 and Camera Raw 6.7.  Similarly, Lightroom 4.0 was finalized before Camera Raw 6.7.  We’ll get Lightroom and Camera Raw in sync soon but in the interim, here’s the latest incremental support list for each product, relative to Camera Raw 6.6 and Lightroom 3.6:
    Photoshop CS6 beta with ACR7
    Canon PowerShot S100V
    Fuji FinePix X-S1

  • Request better support skin tone evaluation/measurement

Hello. I am writing this with the intention that it will be read by the folks at Adobe that are involved in the development of Lightroom. I'm pretty new to this forum, however, and I'm a little confused about whether this feature requests thread actually goes to the Adobe Lightroom team, considering that it is in a user-to-user forum. If there is a better avenue to get my feature request to Adobe, I would appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction.
Before I get into my request, I also want to mention that I did my due diligence and searched this thread to make sure this has not been requested before.
I am submitting this request because I do not see any useful way to measure or evaluate skin tone in Lightroom while adjusting white balance (or after adjusting white balance, for that matter). I can do a mouse-over to read RGB values, but I am not aware of any useful way to use RGB values for evaluating skin tones.
I just watched the latest George Jardine video, in which he recommends to use a calibrated monitor and move the Develop controls back and forth until your eye tells you it's correctly adjusted. I enjoyed this video, and I have found that this generally works well for me for tone balance, but I believe an additional tool for measuring or evaluating skin tones would benefit the Lightroom workflow as I will explain below.
I believe that many serious photographers, pro and amateur alike, routinely use the eyedropper in Photoshop for reading CMYK values to confirm the skin tones in their work. Even if they feel like they can usually eyeball pretty well, they find they get greater consistency when they use the eyedropper.
Now I'm not saying that Lightroom necessarily needs CMYK support. Photoshop Elements, for example has a skin tone adjustment even though it doesn't have CMYK support. And I'm also not suggesting that Lightroom necessarily needs skin tone sliders like Photoshop Elements. I'm just suggesting that the Lightroom workflow would benefit from some kind of tool for evaluating skin tone while or after adjustments are being made in the Develop Module. I would like to leave it up to Lightroom to decide exactly how to implement this.
The only way I currently see to do adjust while measuring skin tones is to open the file in Photoshop, make adjustments, and save. Even if there is a way to do this with ACR and have the adjustments saved in the sidecar or in the DNG, it still seems like a time-comsuming and unnecessary step for my workflow.
Now this request is predicated on the assumption that evaluting skin tone is fundamental enough for a basic workflow that it should be included in Lightroom. In my opinion it is, and that is why I am making this feature request. I'm sure that some might not need it for their workflow, but it seems to me that this would be a valuable feature to a great many Lightroom users.
Thanks for lending your ear, Adobe. I look forward to ALL your future versions of Lightroom, and I hope that skin tone evaluation/measurement is included in one of them.
    Regards,
    Mike

Your post seems to assume that Lightroom is a tool for travel/landscape photography, and other types of photography (e.g., portrait/fashion) should be supported by a "specialized add-on module". I have to disagree with you on that point. Considering many of the examples on the Lightroom marketing are fashion shoots, I would think that they considers portrait/fashion photographers to be an important part of their target audience. They are not a fringe group of specialists.
I'm sure that portrait/fashion photographers would feel the same way about a Lightroom capability that primarily benefits the workflow of a travel/landscape photographer, i.e., when I do do some landscape work, I just edit in Photoshop. But you wouldn't agree to that, would you?
Skin tone measurement can be an incredibly easy tool to implement. It can be something as simple as showing the CMY values alongside the RGB values during a mouseover. Keep in mind, I'm talking about CMY not CMYK, so there should be no need to worry about what ICC profile to use. RGB to CMY is a straightforward transformation. It's embarassingly simple.
There are other ways Adobe can implement skin tone management that would be more powerful but a little more complicated. Those would be great too.
Anyway, thanks for the link to the Adobe feature request page! I will use it.
    Regards,
    Mike

  • Camera calibration - specific camera models not listed

I'm an amateur moving up to LR 3 and have been trying to learn this program by reading the LR3 book by Scott Kelby. He shows that the Camera Calibration feature has some settings for specific cameras yet the drop down menu has none listed. I've upgraded to 3.6 and the images were copied from raw to DNG. Wondering if I'm doing something wrong??

You can find camera profiles for Sony models here:
    http://www.piraccini.net/2011/02/profili-colore-sony-a900-per-adobe-lr.html
But please note this excerpt from his site:
"The standard profiles are accurate only for the A700, the A850, the A900, the NEX-3 and the NEX-5 (where I've photographed the color table with the corresponding camera), for the other cameras I've just used the best matching one."

  • Camera calibration - Adobe/Camera standard?

    Hi,
I found my Canon 7D images was not very good regarding colors, red was often near orange. I used "camera standard" as default.
I downloaded software from X-rite and made a new profile with a colorchecker  and my images became much much better and I am happy. But then I noticed that the difference between "adobe standard" and my new profile was very small.
So my question is, should not the "camera standard" be much closer to the "correct" profile than the "adobe standard"?  I thought the "camera standard" was made for Canon 7D, but that does not seem to be correct.  Have I misunderstood something?

The camera standard profile is supposed to approximate the jpeg rendering of your camera in its default (standard) settings. So certainly this is not what we would call "correct". It approximates what Canon thinks looks great and is based more on aesthetic considerations than on a desire to get correct color. It basically represents a reverse engineering by Adobe of Canon's "secret sauce". The in-camera jpeg renderings are far from colorimetrically correct. The Adobe standard is based on calibrations using color charts done at Adobe. They are very lightly tweaked for pleasant color (mostly skin) but not by as much as the Canon profiles your camera uses. The Adobe standard profile should be pretty close to correct. When you generate your own profile, you get correct rendering for your specific camera. This compensates for variation between copies of the camera and for color differences in your lenses/filters/lighting conditions. Normally that should not be too far from Adobe Standard. The X-rite software tends to generate a more contrasty profile than Adobe Standard in my experience but the difference in color is not that large.

  • Camera Calibration - which Profile to use?

This is a spin out of another thread in the forum - How do I avoid magenta discolouring?.
I am using a Lr 5.7.1 on OS X Mavericks (10.9.5) and photos from 3 cameras - Nikon D600, Nikon D40, and Canon 450D - they all exhibit a very similar behaviour with RAW files described below, but it much more noticeable with the Nikons and very noticeable with the D600. I have been using Lr since version 3 (I think but I might have started with version 2, I cannot remember).
By default I have always imported my RAW files leaving the profile under Camera Calibrations as Adobe Standard. I have been moderately unhappy with the results I was seeing in Lr, not with all the images but with quite a few of them; in a nutshell they don't as I envision them and they don't look the way they look in camera. With "the way the look in camera" I mean inspecting the histograms and clipping warnings.
I am fully ware that Lr does not read the picture control settings of any camera, my Nikons have always being set to Standard.
Below are 2 screenshots from a photo taken with the D600.
    1) Histogram with Adobe Standard profile
    2) After and before view, left "Adobe Standard" right "Camera Standard"
There are 2 different images, the histogram is changed, the greens are render differently. I also know which one I'll pick for further work, the right image, the one with Camera Standard as the profile.
Back to the question for this post: Camera Calibration, which Profile to use? (and why?)

    ssprengel wrote:
Which profile to use is a matter of personal taste, so why does it matter what other people use?
I am not sure I would agree with this statement without making some important qualifications.
Camera profiles can be used for creative purposes, no disagreement there. However, I don't think this is the sole purpose of camera calibration and camera profile, isn't it? Jeff Schewe, who sometimes contributes to this forum, wrote in The Digital Negative "The profiles are designed to calibrate a particular camera model's particular colour rendering intent [...]. It's entirely possible that your particular camera might be a bit different from the one they profiled, so you might be able to make a customer profile for your camera that would produce a more accurate rending than what comes with Lightroom and Camera Raw"; the quote is taken from his section on Lightroom Camera Calibration and leads to conclude that the purpose of camera profiles is also to reproduce the colour rendering intent of camera.
My point on the original post is that it seems that Camera Standard, with both my Nikons set to "Standard" picture controls, seems to better reproduce the colour rendering intent of both cameras, specially if greens are involved. All I am looking for is advice regarding best practice. This is absolutely non trivial from my point of view, best practice is not a matter of personal taste as I am sure you know. Insisting that default settings are best practice, I am not saying you are saying this, is not helpful.
    ssprengel wrote:
As to your question about making Camera Standard the default profile, you do it the same as customizing any other LR default:  by selecting an unedited photo, setting Camera Standard as its profile, then on the keyboard use Alt - Set Default…  (the button was Reset before pressing Alt) then confirm that you want to update the LR defaults to the current settings.
    This is correct.
    ssprengel wrote:
I am not sure how to find photos with a particular camera profile but perhaps one of the filters in Library can do that, or a smart collection query.  I don’t have LR in front of me right now to try things, myself.
I don't think this possible. I cannot find a way to do it with smart collections or the filter library. I'll keep experimenting.

  • What is "Camera Calibration" for?

What is "Camera Calibration" in Camera Raw? Is it for making adjustments to digital cameras to render more accurate color in Camera Raw? Or just for fine-tune RAW images?

because we live in a real world where there are no two things exactly the same and this also includes cameras of course. The profiles are a good starting point but if you find that they don't quite work and get constant blue tinting for instance then you can set those sliders to correct the problem inside the camera. The process usually involves photographing a color chart and then trying to match the colors on screen with the actual numbers

  • Color artifacts with A7s and A6000 files using Camera calibration profiles

I'm seeing some really obvious chroma artifacts / false colors with RAW files from either a Sony A7s or A6000 when using any of the Adobe-provided Camera calibration profiles that emulate Sony's rendering.
This seems to happen at any ISO, and is very frequent.
If I use the Adobe Standard calibration profile then things look normal, but that's might just be because it produces rather desaturated images compared to the "sony" profiles.
Prior to those Sony cameras I was using Nikon DSLRs for which I had somewhat similar issues when using the first version of the Nikon camera profiles.
Those issues got fixed when Adobe released the "v4" camera profiles.
Below are some examples without any adjustment, the only difference is the choice of camera calibration profile:
    Camera Landscape:
    Adobe Standard:
    Camera Standard:
    Adobe Standard:
    Camera Landscape:
    Adobe Standard:

The legacy ACR X.x profiles are no more produced nor included for newer cameras (AFAIK, since ACR 5.1/LR 2.1). The Adobe Standard is the new default starting point for these.
While I am at it....are the Canon camera profiles I downloaded for the 1Ds MKII the same as for the 5D MKII or do I have to download different one...I suspect they are the same or Lightroom wouldn't offer them to me...is that correct?
The profiles are different for each camera model, even if they share the same name in the Calibration panel. If you can see them when developing 5DII files, it means the camera-specific profiles are installed for your particular camera model (otherwise, you wouldn't see them).

  • Where should I save the camera calibration profile for Lightroom 2?

I created some DNG Camera Profiles by DNG Profile Editor. For Camera Calibration in Camera Raw, I save those .dcp files in C:\ Administrator\ Documents and Settings\ Application Data\ Adobe\ Camera Raw \ CameraProfiles. However, I could't find such a subfolder in Lightroom folder, does any one know where should I save the dcp files for Lightroom 2? Thank you

It's the same install folder for both Camera Raw and Lightroom (i.e., a .dcp installed in the folder you described will be readable by both CR and LR).

  • How to install Camera Raw 6.7 for Photoshop CS6 Beta?

I tried; it installed for CS5 only (exactly what I didn't want it to do). I don't see where the app/plugins are stored on the computer, so I haven't tried to manually fix it.
I'd like to have my old version of ACR back for CS5, and to be able to use the new one in CS6 beta.
    Thank you!

    Hello!
You cannot install 6.7 in CS6. It is specific for CS5.
If you are interested by the additional camera support, I suggest that you convert a copy of the files with the DNG converter 6.7 until Camera Raw will be updated.
If your camera manufacturer supported DNG as a native raw format, you would not have this issue. (And I can't imagine what the ACR/Lightroom and other teams would come with with the time they would win thanks to that.)

  • Upgraded Adobe LR 4.1, CS6 Beta & got the Canon 5D Mark III, WHEN is next dot release Camera Raw?

I Purchased the Upgraded Adobe LR 4.1, CS6 Beta & got the Canon 5D Mark III, Mac Pro server update to Lion, WHEN is next dot release Camera Raw? My workflow has trippled in time because of this issue. I'm so frustrated with having to convert images in a slowed up piece of crap canon software package and then wait another decade for the newest LR to load the images I could crap fire! Come on Adobe, where's the release? After a few grand you'd think we'd get a better response time. As for Canon, they are not consistant with community software sharing and can kiss my *!! because to leave Adobe hanging sux!
There should be new laws that penalize jerks that screw with workflow!
Time is money, let's go Adobe!

"so there are no Adobe staff here to see your rant."
Oh, they're here    and they see it...
    BTW this might help?

  • When editing my dng files I'm missing soften skin, camera calibration choices. How to get them back?

I've seen the many options for camera calibration. I only get 'Adobe Standard'. Also missing the drop down choice that come with 'soften skin'. Thanks for your help.

D70 should have multiple camera profiles available if you're looking at a raw file.  Jpegs will just have embedded.
I don't have any A330 files to check those I'm afraid, but Adobe have only built multiple profiles for the most popular DSLR's (mainly Canon/Nikon) so that could explain it.

  • Camera Calibration default setting question

HI I'm using a Canon 5D w/ LR3.3. I want to set the Camera Calibration (in the Develop module) to Adobe Standard and have it set that way all the time. I have looked in Preferences and cant find a way to do this?
    Thanks

One other question: When I look at the Process drop-down, (right above Profile), it now says '2003'. Before when it said, '2010 Current'. Is that just because Adobe Standard came out in 2003?
The process version has nothing to do with the camera profile selected, Adobe Standard exists for all LR supported cameras, and has so before PV2010.
The process version influences the way the Raw processing pipeline works (pre LR3 vs. LR3). Quote from the manual:
    Lightroom 3 uses improved processes
to calculate Detail and Fill Light adjustments. Photos that are
edited for the first time in Lightroom 3 use these new processes.
Photos that were adjusted using a previous version of Lightroom
    do not.
To take advantage of the newer processing technology,
however, you can update photos to the current process version.
The process version specifies which version of the Camera Raw sharpening
and noise reduction functions are used to adjust and render photos.
The new process version is Process 2010. The old process version
    is Process 2003.
I guess you might have been looking at a newly imported image when you saw 2010, and are looking at an image imported before LR3 when you see 2003.
And should I be using Adobe Standard in the first place? Is it just a personel thing?
It is a personal preference for a starting point to work on your images. I use Adobe Standard for my 5DMkII as well, whereas I use a different one for my 1DsMkII, because I don't like the Adobe Standard there.

  • Camera Raw 5.5 will not install?  And Camera calibration button question.

I just built a new computer with 7 PRO and installed all my software. So when it comes time to instal 5.5 raw it goes about half way through and tells me to shut off Bridge.  As far as I know the bridge window and program are off and not running.  I even unpined it off the taskbar.
In CS4 when opening a Raw file and I go to my camera calibration botton there are only two options that come up, Arc 3.3 and 4.4. Where are all the other options at?  Do they come with the 5.5 update?  Thanks Keig

Odds are you've got Bridge set to auto-launch at startup...make sure it's not running when you try to install the update.,.and yes, the update should install the addition DNG Profile options.

  • Installed lightroom 5. Downloaded and installed update 5.7. Camera Calibration Question.

Working with both Canon (6D) and Fuji (X-T1) RAW images. Can not locate any camera calibration info for either camera's raw files. Nothing listed in the camera raw folder for any camera.
Everything I have read seems to tell me that there would / should be some information for one or both of my cameras.

It really isn't clear what you are asking. If you are looking for the profiles for your cameras you would go to the calibration tab in the develop module and click to choose from different profiles. Profiles will only be available for raw files, including DNG files.
