CS6 Black wording in RAW

Why can't I see the wording of the raw window of CS6 / Mac (Lion)? Everything is black

Could you upload a screen grab for us to see?   If it were the main Photoshop window you were talking about, then I'd wonder if it was the new interface colours (as per Lightroom) but ACR 7 should still use the same colours as ACR6

If you go to Photoshop>About Plug-in and click on the words Camera Raw, what version does it list?
I suspect you still have Camera Raw 7.0
When you go to Help>Updates from within photoshop cs6, it says nothing available?

  • A word on RAW files

With more hobbyists and prosumers using Aperture, a quick word on RAW files.
RAW files are not image files in the traditional sense .... in fact they are really gray scale files of luminance (brightness) values that are collected from receptors on the CMOS or CCD array.
Array, often called a Bayer Array after the engineer who designed the sensor. The CCD/CMOS sensor is an odd affair. It (other than Fuji, Sigma) is invariably a diagonal array of photo receptors, each with a color filter over it. The accuracy of the filter to the defined value of Red, or Green or Blue means that interpretation is needed to make it look the same as the standard value ...... at every brightness level from zero (no light) to full (saturated). These two items, color accuracy and brightness mapping are part of RAW conversion.
The other non-obvious thin g about the array is that it has more green sensors than reds or blues. Why? Because our eyes see more green in daily life since its in the middle of our visible spectrum. Sensors are rather dumb and stupid about this, not having a brain and all to back them up. Well, they would if we took the jpg's from the camera, but we'd be restricted to whatever the developer said was the "right" answer under all lighting and contrast conditions .... exactly why we want to control the RAW processing, and use our brains and judgement, right?
So, twice as many greens? Yes. But it gets trickier. Since we want to interpret a tone (color) and shade (brightness) for a pixel, we somehow need to map 3 colors (or as we've just discovered 3 colors and a 2nd green) to each pixel. This feat is called interpolation. How it's done is perhaps as much art as science since our eye does not see colors the same at low light levels as it does at mid or bright levels. That brain again helps out! Again we need to use that same brain to help refine the image we see coming out of the RAW processing engine.
But there's yet another problem. Our eyes and brain in combination are freakily fantastic. Despite the microscopic size of those sensors on the CCD/CMOS imager, they are in a geometric array .... and although we can't see them directly, we become immediately aware of them when we see output from it. So a "demosaic" or moire filter needs to be applied to soften the geometric nature of the array. And each array is different and needs different filtering.
So, lots and lots of interpretation is needed before the thing that's captured can be recognized as an image on our screens. How one company (Adobe, Apple, or camera manufacturer etc.) does this is proprietary to them, and so no edits on RAW's can be moved from one software company to another unless you take a resolved version .... jpg, tiff, psd etc.

Most digital cameras use the Bayer pattern colour filter array for their sensor. In a Bayer Pattern CFA, we have a rectangular array of pixels, and each pixel either has a green, red, or blue filter on it. There are variants to this pattern, the complementary CMY system, RGB+clear etc. Some cameras use diagonal arrays of pixels, but these are less common. Fuji have a pattern with large and small pixels, which is unique to them. I'll talk only about the standard RGGB Bayer Pattern here, that most cameras use.
The repeating pattern is something like this:
    R G R G
    G B G B
    R G R G
    G B G B
There are one red, and one blue pixel for every pair of green pixels. This is due to green being the largest component of luma, and hence most easily perceived as contributing most to detail.
Sensors convert light hitting the pixels into a an electrical charge, then to a voltage that gets converted into a digital signal. This digital signal will represent, linearly, the amount of light that hit that pixel. Black, however, in the raw signal may not be at zero, and blacked off calibration areas of the sensor will be recorded to allow for an absolute value for black to be found, and hence give properly linear data for the RAW conversion.
The first stage in RAW conversion is to demosaic the data, which is to interpolate the missing values from the CFA, ie what is green on the red and blue pixels, what is blue on the red and green pixels and what is red on the green and blue pixels. Once this is done, we have a red, green and blue value at each pixel. The demosaicing process can be as complex or as simple as you like. There are as many methods as I've had hot dinners, so it's not suitable for me to go through the current work in this field, but a quick google will help you find more info if it's something that interests you. Most algorithms work on a much larger area of pixels than just the immediate surrounding ones for the algorithm, and this can vastly improve the quality of the conversion.
Demosaicing can lead to image artifacts. These can be exacerbated in cameras that do not have, or do not have adequate optical low pass filtering ahead of the image sensor. That's a topic for another essay though! Moire is one symptom of inadequate filtering, and in Bayer CFAs mostly shows up as chroma moire because there are half as many red and blue pixels as there are green, and hence they are sampled at a lower rate. Chroma Moire, to a great extent, can be visually eliminated with clever RAW processing, however moire in general cannot easily be eliminated once it gets into a image.
Here are some of the main types of artifacts you may see:
"zippering" often caused by over-simplistic interpolation on the green pixels. The edges of straight lines can look like a zipper
"parquet floor" often caused by a simple adaptive algorithm for interpolation getting confused by high local detail
"chroma fringes" are a problem inherent in Bayer CFAs, but can be made worse by some algorithms, and often eliminated by others.
The next stage in processing is on the RGB data to perform colour space conversion from the camera RGB space to a known RGB space, and white balance etc. We still have linear data at this point, and that's very important for such calculations. Finally, a tonal curve will be used to map from linear light data to a pleasing tonal representation for viewing.

  • Does Photoshop CS6 support Nikon D810 raw files?

Does Photoshop CS6 support Nikon D810 raw files? Photoshop won't allow me to open the raw files and Bridge won't display the files either. I tried to download the camera raw plug-in 8.6 but read somewhere that Photoshop CS6 doesn't support it? HELP!!!

It should. The D810 had support since version 8.6. (A relative newcomer.) Did you use Help > Updates on the menu bar?
Take note that the updates for Camera Raw in CS6 only supports updates for cameras and nothing more. You won't get any of the new features inherent in the versions for Photoshop CC (like the filter brush in the Graduated Filter).

Well… I just don't see the wisdom or prudence in updating to 7.1 when 8.3 is available for CS6.

  • SpeedGrade can't read my black magic camera raw properly

SpeedGrade can't read my black magic camera raw properly. I can get corrcet color if I import my black magic camera raw footages into photoshop, after effect and DaVinci Resolve. However, I get the ugly green look whenever I import my raw footages into Speedgrade.

    Hi woolen.woods,
it's certainly possible to use an X-Rite chart, but you'll find that the values aren't very stable across changes to WB, Exposure, Dynamic Range.
So you'd essentially have to do this with every shot which makes it less practical.
What we'll have to investigate for SpeedGrade is a way to use the Matrix information for the BMD cam similar to Lightroom and apply that by default, so you'd have a nicely color balanced picture to begin with - provided there's enough request for this feature (which is currently not the case - but I personally think that's subject to change once there are more cameras out there producing more footage).
For now you might be better off batch processing the footage with an ACR enabled application - After Effects would come to mind.
    Hope this is helpful.
    Best,
    Patrick

  • Trying to update Photoshop CS6 with latest Camera Raw but no luck!!

Working on a Corporate Licensed CS6 and the "Updates" under Help is grayed out? I have a license key, I have logged on to Adobe and I am an admin. Still it's grey.
So I went on the internet and found a lot of pages telling me it is easy to download and install but still no. Adobes own site only gives me version 7.1 (Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows).
The internet gives me this link with a lot of info about 8.5 but no ******* download link http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/camera-raw.html
I suspect Adobe don't let you upgrade beyond 7.1 if you don't run CC but there is no one on Adobe that can confirm it? I also got in touch with Adobe helpdesk but after 45 min on the phone they still wouldn't adress my question, only keep on asking for phone nr, email and other things to raise a case. Also ran the Adobe Application Manager but it just returns with Update Failed.
    It's a simple question.
Has anyone running a Photoshop CS6 on a W7 machine managed to update Camera Raw beyond 7.1?

    hi apnep,
after trying myself for 3 days I finally got in touch with one person at adobes helpdesk that could actually think and did not just respond according to a sheet in front of him. He started out from the sheet telling me that it SHOULD work but when he took over my computer he soon realized something wasn't right. It took him about 45 min of trying, installing, uninstalling and finally he found it.
I don't know if it's something with the licensed version I have ( a corporate one) but in the installation there is one file here C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\AAMUpdaterInventory\1.0.
That AAM Updater Inventory prevents CS6 to update. I don't know why it's there but he simply removed it and voila !!
A 5 second job once you know it =)

  • Bridge CS6 no inicia camera raw

  • Bridge CS6 not showing Camera Raw adjustments

I am wanting the adjustments I've made in Camera Raw to show on the thumbnailed images in Bridge CS6, but after I've made the adjustments in CR, it still shows the original/uncorrected image in Bridge.  Help?
Also, I am wanting to copy+paste the adjustments I've made in Camera Raw from one image to the next, but "Develope Settings ---> Copy Settings" is not highlited in the Bridge menu for me to do so.  Neither is it showing any option to do so when I right click  on the images.
    Thanks!

Embedded thumbnails are included in the raw file from cameras.  Question, as Curt Y wrote in reply #1, is whether you are viewing these embedded from-camera thumbnails or viewing bridge-generated hi quality thumbnails.
What thumbnail quality have you selected in the 'Options For Thumbnail Quality And Preview Generation' button in the Adobe Bridge application bar?  Should be Always High Quality (or possibly High Quality On Demand).  If the selection is set to 'Prefer Embedded (Faster)' you will not see the camera raw changes in the Bridge Content thumbnail images.  Check this selection in your laptop and see if it is same as in your desktop.

  • Why does photoshop cs6 show two camera raw plugins?

I'm running CS6 on a Mac Pro 1,1 version 10.6.8. I installed the most recent update from adobe (8.4). I did the full install and apparently it's only meant for version 10.7 and higher, but my CS6 still works. I did remove that camera raw file and installed the recommended one (ACR V 8.3.0.141). The program is slower now. When I click on 'About Plug in' it lists 2 'Camera Raw' folders. (there is only one camera raw plug in within the 'File Formats' folder, I did remove the 8.4 version) When I click on the first one it pops up an error message: Could not complete the Camera Raw command because the file was not found. I also am now getting this message occasionally when trying to open jpg files. When I click on the second Camera Raw it pops up the plug in Version 8.3.0.141. Is there any way of un-installing that update or the first version of the plug in?

Please file an Adobe (not Apple) crash report the next time it crashes and send me the email address you used in the crash report. That way we get all the important information we need to help figure this out.

  • Bridge CS6 is resizing in raw to 240ppi

If I open a scanned film .tif image in raw, it is being resized and then that size is applied to the image file.
    Original image:
    2400ppi, 1.4 x 0.9", 3341 x 2236 px, 21.38 mb
open in Camera Raw and make no changes
open to Photoshop CS6 & now the image is:
    240 ppi, 13.921 x 9.317", 3341 x 2236 px, 21.38 mb
Save a copy as a .tif, and the copy is:
    240 ppi, 13.921 x 9.317", 3341 x 2236 px, 21.38 mb
    Why is Bridge doing this?
Can I assume that the only difference is in how the file is displayed and that there are no actual changes made to the file data?
    Why 240ppi?
I see that I can change the ppi using the Workflow Options dialog, but where would I set the default, if I wanted to use a different number?
    Does any of it matter?

Forget about ppi and dpi, concentrate on image size in pixels.
Besides this, the default setting of ACR is 240 ppi, if you want it to be 300 ppi for whatever reason (like Curt said, the amount of pixels is what makes the file size, ppi is just a setting displaying the dimensions per pixel, no more no less) use the blue line (like a web link) at the bottom of the ACR window and set it to whatever you like it to be

  • InDesign CS6 Linked Word file issue

Hi, I have a number of 100+ page InDesign files which have a large (linked) Word file that threads though multiple text boxes throughout all of the document pages.
The files need to be shared amongst multiple computers within our studio. This setup was used with InDesign CS5.5 last year and worked fine, it was still working fine with CS5.5 this year but we needed to upgrade to CS6.
We have the trial version of CS6 installed throughout the studio now however we have been having big problems just opening the InDesign files up in CS6. They predominantly seemed to only open up 95% of the way and then hang (spinning wheel) and when (on occasion) we did get 1 open, it was clearly struggling and normally crashed. Can't get most open at all any more.
I have tried opening files on different computers (Mac & PC), tried changing format of linked Word file, the only thing that seemed to ever work was breaking the link to the Word file
(from within CS6) and then saving without Word file linked. This is not ideal for our workflow but even if we wanted to do this to all files, I am unable to even get in to some of them to unlink them now (as they are now all saved as CS6 files which won't open). Moving Word doc from location (so that InDesign can't pick it up) also doesn't work.
I have tried deleting InDesign preferences & all recovery files several times, still no joy. It may be related to being on the trial version (seeing as 5.5 still seems fine) but I am hesitant to upgrade everything if it is not going to work. Does anyone have any ideas??

Thanks Peter (and Bob), thought last solution was going to be a winner but still hangs at same point (on several files) unfortunately.
Strangely, an older version of one of the files (a CS6 one that is linked to the same Word file) just opened, which suggests to me that the issue may not actually be wholly to do with it linking to the Word file.
We just setup a brand new PC with just CS6 trial & Office on it, copied InDesign files to desktop, turned off the auto link boxes in preferences and still no luck. Getting close to giving up stage I think, just can't figure out the cause.
