CS6 Bridge Cache Slow to Build

I have had a lot of problems with Bridge CS6 thumbnail generation from day one.  THe latest updates have not changed anything.
I use embedded thumbnails, do not generate 100% previews, nor have box checked to keep them.
In building thumbnails the first time, expecially for video files, takes a long time.  It seems to hang at each file and you can not do anything with Bridge as it is frozen until it completes the thumbnail action.  If I can catch it between thumbnails and get it to respond, I click on Tools/purge cache for XXX folder, and then the rebuild goes much faster, but still slower than CS5.  I have been mostly using CS5 Bridge for this reason.
I would like to make a frontal attact on the Bridge developers, but would like to poll other users and see if they have the same, or similar, problems I have described above.

I don't recognize this behavior, don't have large film files but in general a large file needs more time to cache. But if you have embedded thumbnails only selected it looks to me the problems seem to be addressed to your cache partition. (is it an internal or external disk??)
Personally I don't like the use of a different location for my cache other then the disk where my application is on. However Bridge CS6 must be able to do this. The main difference between Bridge CS5 and CS6 is transition from 32 bit to 64 bit and for cache they again switched to an other format (from MySQL to SQLite). If you have old cache files from CS5 written to folders this might also be slowing you down because it tries to read the files (but that is a guess from my side)
Check your content window with 'show hidden files' to search for these files.
Starting with a fresh cache file after having deleted all manually might also come to rescue.

  • CS6 Bridge caching bug

In this thread we discussed a problem with CS6 Bridge constantly re-caching layered Tif files:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4473274#4473274
Since then a new related problem has been reported and discussed on other forums.
Sometimes Photoshop refuses to save a file, claiming the file is already open or in use by another program, even though no other programs are running.
Turns out that problem is caused by Bridge caching. If you have Tif support disabled in Camera Raw prefs, the save problem does not occur. If you go to Bridge and navigate to a different folder, the save does not occur or goes away.
I've tried to report this as a bug in the photoshop.com site, but that bug reporting process is confusing and I have no confidence is works. Anybody know a better way to report bugs?

  • Bridge cache managment & export to folders?

What is the function and advantage of "auto exporting cache to folders" in Bridge?
Round 2 testing, I changed the CS6 Bridge cache location to be the same location I was using for CS5, on a secondary drive.
Small mistake, because CS6 proceeded to delete the entire existing cache and start building a new one. However, Bridge CS5 seems to coexist OK sharing the same cache with CS6. They are both re-building the cache as I visit individual folders. (30,000 files in 800 folders gonna take a while).
Long ago under CS3 I adopted the strategy of setting Bridge to "Auto export cache to folders." That worked well, because if you purged the master cache, Bridge would very quickly rebuild it from the folder cache files each time you re-visited a folder. The thumbs would come up very quickly if a folder cache existed, much slower if no folder cache existed.
Under CS5, and now CS6, that is no longer true. If you visit a folder after the cache has been purged, a slow process to generate thumbnails occurs. It appears that the individual folder cache is not being used for anything. The time to re-build the cache is about the same, regardless of whether folder cache files exist or not.
Purging or deleting the Bridge cache was often necessary under CS3 because the cache often became corrupted. CS5 was more stable, but still not immune from cache corruption. Maybe CS6 will be even more stable, but I'm betting cache purges will still be sometimes necessary. Is there any way to make the rebuild faster? Or more generally, what's the best strategy for Bridge cache management?
(And no, I don't have "keep 100% previews in cache" selected.)

What is the function and advantage of the Bridge Forum?

  • I purchased CS6 2 years ago (or more) I now keep being asked to register, I also find Bridge is running slow in building the cache is this two problems or are they interrelated  - any help please.

Hello could anyone advise me please:
I purchased CS6 Student edition approx 2 years ago, and I have been using it pretty much on a daily basis.  Now it has suddenly started prompting me to register the software because the trial has ended. I did think about uninstalling and reinstalling but thought against this in view of the fact that CS6 is no longer available for purchase.
I am also having problems with the speed of Bridge in building the cache it seems to take for ever - about 2 sec per image.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Sign in, activation, or connection errors | CC, CS6, CS5.5
And for the Bridge cache simply flush it from the Bridge prefs and rebuild it - after doing disk maintenance liek defragmenting your drives.

  • CS6 Bridge Under Windows 8 Slow Response

When I use CS6 Bridge in Windows 8 (64 bit) it takes about 10 seconds to open a folder.  I select an image from the grid and press the spacebar to see it full size.  It takes another 10 seconds.  If I go to the Menu Bar and click on an item such as Window it takes about 10 seconds to get the drop down list, but if I then slide the cursor over to View and click on it, the menu appears right away and if I then click on Full Screen Preview, the  full size image appears immediately.  When I check the Widows Resource Monitor there is no unusual activity occurring during these 10 second intervals.  It is as if the program is in a wait state pending some event.
When I was running CS6 under Windows 7 (32 bit) everything worked fine.  When I run CS4 Bridge on Windows 8 (64 bit) it also runs fine.  I have purged the cache, and increaed cache size but to no avail.  My system has lots of processing speed, memory and disk space.
Does anyone know what I could do to get CS6 Bridge running correctly in my Windows 8 environment?   Is it possible that there is some kind of incompatibility with
Bridge, Windows 8 and the GPU?

"There really should be no reason that running in Vista compatability mode would change the behavior of the application. Vista and 7 are so similar at the fundamental level that there shouldn't be any advantage.   Really, this is likely pointing to a lack of OS updates being installed, or installed improperly. One person mentioned that a new user account fixed things. I have a feeling that would true of more folks who are willing to try it. I'll run this by my collegues though."
But if it works it is better than the alternative.    curt
Surprisingly the bit about trying it under a different or new user actually works here.  All the aggruvating 5 to 10 second long freezes disappear when used under a fresh account.
Ok, so how can that be parlayed into being able to use Bridge CS6 under my own account?
Does the fact that it works as expected under a new fresh account point to something particular that needs changing or adjustment under my regular account?
The Adobe staff person seems to think it is most likely a problem of  (lack of) updates or incorrectly installed updates, but that would not have any bearing if changing to a new account fixes the problem would it?
PS - How does one run in Vista compat mode?

  • Cannot open CS6 Bridge.  Always the same ERROR: Bridge has a problem and cannot read the cache

Cannot open CS6 Bridge.  Always the same ERROR: Bridge has a problem and cannot read the cache

Try this.  This is for CS6 but substitue CC and Bridge 6.
~library/caches/Adobe/Bridge CS6 and inhere should be 2 files:
    Adobe Bridge Plug-in Cache
and the folder called Cache. Inhere should be 4 folders called '254', '1024', 'data' and 'full'
All those folders carry the content of the respective quality of the thumbs and preview as well as 100 % cache and Bridge database.
Any way, Since you have not used Bridge you have no relevant amount of cache and I would suggest you quit both PS and Bridge and manual delete both the items (plug in and folder called cache at the end of the Bridge CS6 path mentioned above.
(both files will refresh itself after a restart of Bridge).
To be on the save side also visit in same user library the folder Preferences and look for the file called "com.adobe.bridge5.plist" (yes it is Bridge 5 that comes with CS6, all Adobe apps have their own version number and they are presented in the same Suite version. CS6 has PS version 13 and Bridge version 5 )
also drag this file to the trash.
Then hold down option key (alt) while starting Bridge and this should give you the option to reset the preferences as mentioned earlier in this thread.
Choose reset prefs and try again.

  • BRIDGE CS6 - Move CACHE without rebuilding/indexing

    Hi,
been trying to find answers for this in the forum, but could not, so here we go.
I have setup a SSD RAID0 system to use as dedicated CACHE drive.
I have A LOT of files (and I mean A LOT!!) on my computer as I am working a lot with timelapse-photography.
For after effects /  premiere, I have moved the cache files from the old location to a new location on the new speed-devil-SSD-Cache system, without problems.
However, when I try to move the Bridge cache folder, and then specify that new location in Bridge, it seem like Bridge is NOT picking up the files which is allready stored on the new location.
Actually Bridge starts to rebuild the cache and read all files again. This is VERY time-consuming, due to my very large number of files on my system.
Now If could leave Bridge rebuilding over night, I could probably survive. The problem is that Bridge does not start to fetch thumbs and rebuild until I enter that specific folder again with Bridge.
So my question is; How can I make Bridge believe the new cache location is still the old one, so that I don't have to rebuild all my cache files again?
For now I switched back to the old cace location for Bridge, until I figure out how to overcome this rather strange behaviour of Bridge..
Surely there has to be an elegant way of moving your cache in Bridge withough having to rebuild all over again..
    Thank you for any advise..
    Ola

    Thanks guys!!
The problem is, the apporach you are suggesting, will make Bridge index/cache ALL of my files, and although I have A LOT of files that are indexed, I have equally many or maybe more, that are not, and need not to be indexed..
That is why I would like to MOVE the and keep the existing library so that I don't cache files I do not need to be cached...
I guess I will just have to bite the bitter apple and delete the old cache, sit and wait for each folder I access, one by one...
This is something that needs to be adressed by Adobe...

  • Feature Request (again); Adobe Bridge Cache Manager

In Adobe Bridge, the Cache is still a problem and a huge memory hog. I asked for a good Cache Manager over 3 years ago when it was needed CS4.
Now in CS6, I am disappointed that the cache system in Bridge has not changed. Why do you have a section in the Adobe Forums that asks for 'Feature Request' and then ignore them?
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2652688#2652688
"I would personally like a tool within Bridge that allows me to manage and control the Cache in a more personal and effective way. I would like a toggle that would keep '100% previews' in one folder for a selected period of time (1 day to 1 month) before the folder's cache is automatically purged. And another toggle that would give me the option to keep a selected folder's cache permanently intact (such as an Important Portfolio Folder or an Edited Images Folder).
As a photographer, I take and edit a lot of photos. When I import a photoshoot with 1,500 photos (not uncommom at all) I enjoy having the Bridge Previews at 100%, but for only a limited time. Unfortunately, I forget to purge the individual cache of that folder and the cache builds to a point that makes Adobe Bridge CS4 very slow. I then have to Purge the whole Bridge Cache in order to make Bridge run smooth again.

    gumbogood wrote:
A Cache Manager tool that lets me either schedule a cache cleaning on a folder, or keep it permanent, would be a huge help. And I don't think that it is unreasonable for me to ask this of Adobe.
If you submit a feedback poll where Yammer pointed you, and it gets a couple of hundred (thousand?) users agree you might get Adobe's attention.
I agree with Yammer that Bridge is a low priority project with Adobe.  Think their target audience is the casual user with a few hundred photos added each year.   Your use pattern is more specialized and you either have to adapt with scripts or move to another product IMO.
The size of cache takes a lot of people by surprise.  It can grow humongous if you use HQ thumbs and save 100% previews.  One can dump the cache in preferences, but many are reluctant to to this as they think it will delete all their keywords and edits.  In addition, to do a search you have to re-index all your files, which can take a long time.
If you have "export cache to folders" checked, dumping the cache in preferences only dumps the central cache.  To dump the folder cache you have to visit each folder and click on Tools/cache/purge cache for xxx folder.  Again, most people do not recognize this.  This technique purges both the central and folder cache for this folder only.
It the 100% previews are the problem for you it would seem like a simple task for the script people to write one that would delete it after xx days as the 100% previews are held in a specific folder.
Bridge is not a good digital asset manager.  You are probably in that arena dealing with several hundred thousand images.  Omke uses a DAM as it does some functions better than Bridge, but Bridge is still his main program.  Can't remember the name, but if you read these posts you might have seen it.

  • Work with the Adobe Bridge cache

    jugenjury,
Here is a post in thead "Bridge Slow to load thumbs, building criteria", where Bridge constantly rebuilds thumbnails.  An interesting theory and seems to have some evidence to back it up.  Do you have Generate 100% Previews Checked?    J&K thinks this is problem in certain instances.

Discovered today, 21 May 2013. HOPEFULLY, the ANSWER!!
    Open BRIDGE
Select THUMBNAIL OPTIONS from the icon on the address bar at the right/top of the screen.
This should have HIGH QUALITY PREVIEWS checked.
    Check GENERATE 100% PREVIEWS.
    Immediately UNCHECK GENERATE 100% PREVIEWS
This should reset the registry key that causes BRIDGE to continuously reload 100% previews of thumbnails!
A further symptom that this is occurring is that once the folder has been re-cached by Bridge (before doing the above), all the image files in that folder will have 100% previews already (no "Loading 100%" when the spacebar has been pressed and a left-click on the image to load the 100% view), even though this switch is un-checked.).
It appears that something causes BRIDGE to set this flag in the registry (incorrectly), while showing the flag as not set in the visual user interface. Setting and un-setting the flag causes the registry key to be correctly re-initialised.
I have encountered this on two PCs running CS6. On my own PC, re-installing CS6 to fix the loss of the connection between BRIDGE and PHOTOSHOP also corrected the above problem, so it appears to be an intermittent fault when CS6 is installed. Sometimes the registry flag is initialised correctly, and sometimes it is not.
The other occurrence was on a friend's PC. That PC has also lost the connection between Bridge and Photoshop, so it could be that the registry "corruption" causes both problems. The continuously loading thumbnails (and displaying the message "Building Criteria ... " while Bridge does this) appear to be resolved by performing the above action (or by re-installing CS6). That PC's owner has now re-loaded a whole swag of his image folders in Bridge. Some have needed to re-cache the thumbnails. When this has been done once (relatively quick, now that Bridge is not re-building 100% previews), returning to that folder loads the Bridge database and thumbnails for that folder almost instantly.
On my own PC, opening a folder containing 900 image files (450 .DNG with original raw embedded + 450 large JPEGs, with user-applied metadata, takes less than 5 seconds). Changing this switch for an open folder immediately precipitates the long process of generating 100% previews for that folder. This is PAINFULLY slow! This operation can only be cancelled by re-setting the switch back to un-checked.
A study of two PCs doth not a representative sample make, I know; but it does seem to validate the theory.

Photoshop cs6 running extremely slow on opening a file. have reset prefs and set type to none. have to force quit  most of the time.

I'm experiencing the same trouble.  Photoshop takes 5 minutes to open then runs fine.
I recently bought a new iMac AND updated to Adobe Master Collection CS6.  My concern is that PhotoShop now takes 5 minutes to open. The Photoshop desktop pops up immediately, but the moment you click on a tool or try to open a file (no matter the size) results in the spinning wheel for five minutes before you can do anything.  After that, Photoshop appears to work fine.
    What I’ve done:
    Ran Adobe updater
    Reset Photoshop Preferences
Validated all fonts and removed any trouble fonts
    Ran the font test
Set font preview size to none
Cleared the Photoshop type cache and system cache
    Disabled Symantec Endpoint
Tried running with the GPU processor on/off and in basic
Tried opening Photoshop with optional third party plug-ins turned off (still took five minutes but this time I didn’t even get the Photoshop desktop view until AFTER the five minutes)
I’m wondering since I migrated the files form my old computer (and older versions of Master Collection) did something get corrupted.

  • Edits made in earlier Camera Raws are not displaying in CS6 Bridge for PC

All the painstaking adjustments and croppings I've made over the years to my raw files in earlier versions of Camera Raw do not show up in CS6. It's as though I never did any adjustments.
But if I open the files in CS6 Camera Raw and make a tiny tweak adjustment for all files (such as +1 in saturation), then the entire set of previous adjustments DOES show up in CS6 Bridge.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop CS6 a whole bunch of times and this never corrects!
Is there any fix for this? Or did I just get a BAD copy of Photoshop CS6 and am stuck, since there doesn't seem to be ANY support from Adobe for this.
I am subscribed to CC and this problem does not happen in CC Bridge, but I want to maintain CS6 because I don’t trust Adobe to keep the CC price at something I can afford.
PLEASE can someone offer a suggestion???

You have thumbnails set to embedded.  They will not show edits unless you opt for some version of HQ thumbnails, but these take up a lot more room and and slower to build.  Your choice.

  • Purging Adobe Bridge Cache

ACK!  Ok, so I am a photographer, not a computer person.   I'm a single middle aged mom going back to school and my minor is photography..... I am still learning all I can do in CS5....  I just recently noticed my computer slowing down and now I am getting a pop up when I launch Bridge telling me to purge the cache folder in preferences.
First off I don't completely understand what the cache folder is or what it does.
Secondly I know enough to know not to trust all popups.... so i need to understand what I lose if I purge the system.
Third... what options do I have to fix this problem?
Any help in basic untechy simple minded mom terms would be fabulous.  I really need to understand what this cache thing is...and what problems I am going to encounter if I purge it.... and what options I have to stop the pop up but maintain integrity of my files.
    thanks!!!
    Jen

Any help in basic untechy simple minded mom terms would be fabulous.
I never have met a simple minded mom, and one who decided to go back to school could not simple minded so I leave that qualification to you, nevertheless CS5 is pretty complicated so basic untechy is not all that easy...
Without knowing what computer system you are on I give it a try.
Curt already told you that it was save to purge this cache.
The cache folder in Bridge contains data that is created by Bridge when it produced viewable thumbnails and High Quality previews, purging this data would only mean that you trash this data and have to let Bridge again build it's previews and thumbnails so you can see them again in the content and preview window. No more no less. So dumping this cache only causes you the problem of letting it run this process again.
This takes a bit time depending on amount and size of file, obvious the more files and size the longer it takes.
But be aware of the fact that it is possible Bridge Cache is not the only thing causing your computer to behave slow. Usually You should have at least 10% of free space left on your Hard Drive, this space is needed for the computer to write down temporarily files and data and the more space the quicker it will be but a minimum of 10 % is a common rule.
Also having multiple applications running and not having enough RAM (memory that applications use to store temporarily data) is also causing problems.
And to learn more besides from school try adobe TV and view some tutorials about Bridge.

  • Bridge CS5 SLOW!!

I can't believe how SLOW this new version of Bridge is.
If I batch rename, say 70 .dng files from the 1DSMKIII (around 21-26mb each), I can go eat lunch & come back 45 minutes later, & it's still working. No exaggeration.
If I label, say 10 of these files, it takes approximately 3 minutes to "update settings.".
The speed is approimately the same of files from the 5D(MKI), and a Panasonice LX3. I only shoot RAW & convert all to DNG upon import from Camera.
    I'm on a Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 3 GHz, 17GB RAM. Mac OSX.5.8
I've deslected "keep 100% Previews in Cache" and "Automatically export cache to folders."
I've set the cache size to maximum, emptied & purged the cache repeatedly.
I've also disabled "Use software rendering" & Generate Monitor size previews".
I'm also running the 64 bit version of Photoshop CS5, if that matters. Bridge version 4.0.2.1. Camera Raw version 6.1
Also, the thumbnails don't reflect actual Camera Raw settings unless I opt to "Generate High Qaulity Thumbnail". This takes even longer!

    Thank you
Also, I couldn't log in to the forums with my actual Username (said it had been taken. Well DUH.), so I had to keep trying until it accepted the one I have now.

    Using CS5, Photoshop 12.0, and Bridge 4.0.0.529
    Hi Phil
first of all, you don't have the latest update for Bridge, it should say 4.0.5.11. You should first of all update to that version, I think most of your problems will be solved with this update.
But! be aware that using the auto Update also will show you the option to update to latest ACR plug in 6.5  This version causes trouble with the use of Photodownloader. Since you have a 5d2 you have no need for that latest version of ACR so best deselect this option and stay at version ACR 6.4 for the Raw Plug in until the newer update that should have solved this problem.
If you already have ACR 6.5 (you can see so in PS itself, menu Photoshop/ About Plug in / Camera Raw to see what version you have installed) check the download link Tai Lao provided in the thread 'revert to previous plug in'
When you begin with an empty cache does Bridge work continually to  build the cache or does it work on a case by case basis as you point to a directory during you work flow?  My system seems to work on a case by case basis.  So it's not a 2 hour task to build a new cache.
I was not clear enough it seems. Meant to describe the time that was needed after I have deleted the cache file in the preferences to start with a fresh but empty cache. I do so a few times a year.
Once this is done Bridge only needs to cache the new files I added (your case to case basis) and that is much much faster. I use Photodownloader for this. convert to DNG, rename the files, add metadata copyright template and back up original. Mainly converting to DNG takes some extra time but that is only once. Having all the renaming and converting options in Photodownloader checked I only start Photodownloader when my card is in the CF reader, hit OK, check if Bridge is pointed to the folder the files are put in and I do something else.
After the last file is converted all files also have been cached and I can start working if I wanted to

I've found that trying to use the CS6 (cloud) version of Adobe bridge is not really possible unless you don't mind having 4-8 second pauses for nearly any use.  Right clicking for any reason is guaranteed to cause a good 5 second wait to see the right click menu. The first click on any menu bar item also gauranteed to cause a 5-8 second wait.  Repeatedly (happens whenever focus leaves bridge, no matter how momentary)
Of course if you are intent on working with your images you can't really put up with that much delay.
I end up using CS5 bridge with CS6 photoshop or any of the other CS6 tools, but some things are then impossible to do from bridge, to me the worst one is not being able to send selections of images thru the photoshop image processor.  I have to start CS6 bridge and put up with its incredible contrariness to do that job.
Something that was done to bridge between CS5 and CS6 seems to be the likely place to look for the solution to this problem, but while I can read the lsted changes I don't know enough to be able to tell which might be responsible or what I can do about it.
My hardware is nothing breath taking but should be well adequate to run Bridge... especially when I've carefully turned off any other application that I am using.
I've noticed lots of talk here of redoing cache and moving cache etc.  My cache is on a different disk than the program and I've purged it a time or two to make sure that wasn't the problem.
I've made no customizations to bridge so it should be installed all vanilla.

I have the same issue.  Customer chat has not been able to resolve.
    :  CS6 Unresponsive.
2 second lag after clicking on any menu item.
4-8 second lag after right clicking on any image.
3 second lag while selecting images with arrow keys.
2 second lag selecting multiple images
    My system is high performance:
    . 12 Core 3.3Ghz Xeon Processors
    . 24GB RAM
. Primary drive is 8 SSDs in a RAID0 configuration
    . Dual nVidia Quadro FX5400
    . OS: Win7 x64
CS5 and CS5.5 were very “snappy” in responsiveness on this system.  CS6 Bridge works fine on my laptop, perfectly responsive.
Once Camera RAW or Photoshop are open, no issue working in these tools, so, the issue is bridge.
Here’s my debugging steps which have not worked to fix the issue:
Installed the latest camera RAW plug in from Nikon.  Nikon D800 RAW .NEF files work in windows explorer and in CS5.5.
    Installed all windows updates
Installed the lastest nvidia FX5800 card drivers
Uninstalled all Adobe products (reader, media player, etc.)
Uninstalled all plugs ins (HDR, noise, etc.)
Checked there are no fonts on the system (no TTF files)
Uninstalled Office 2013 to make sure there were no system font issues.
Uninstalled all Nikon software except the RAW plug in.
    Deleted C:\Program Files\Adobe and C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe
Searched for any Adobe reference in c:\Users\<my_username>\ (example AppData), and deleted it.
Cleaned the registry of any reference to Adobe or any dll related to Adobe or an Adobe plug in.
    Rebooted multiple times.
Re-installed CS6 Master Collection.  At this point it did not recognize my raw photos (.NEF from a Nikon D800).
    Installed all Adobe Updates.
The updates fixed the camera raw issue
Ran FontTest.jsx – all fonts passed, none failed.
    Tried Preferences:
Advanced -> Use Software Rendering : CPU utilization went up, but, no impact on the lag
Startup Scripts : Disabled all but Photoshop CS6
Increased Cache Size, Compacted Cache, Purged Cache, Different Cache organizations, etc.
