CS6 Envelope Distort Warp - PMS color problem

Hi Everyone!
Massive issue here.
We're using Envelope Distort > Warp to create packaging to fit a curved dieline.
The image used for the background includes a Pantone PMS who's values are changing at the Warp stage.
The image after warping appears lighter and the tones have changed.
The image is an embedded Photoshop flattened .tif.
We have tried:
* removing all colour profiles from both Illustrator and Photoshop and any embedded profiles
* changing the PMS to a spot colour that isn't linked to the Pantone Plus colour books we use, but retaining the correct CMYK values
* we've replicated the problem using another image that includes tones of a PMS. Warping also changes the tones.
* Expanding the final Warp in the hope it would revert to the right values after.
Using CS6 on OS X 10.8.4
I've attached an image of the problem. The top is how the PMS should read. Below, is after warping.
*EDIT - Rasterizing the ENTIRE artwork solves the issue - BUT, this is not ideal to send to print as the text is now pixelated.
We then Rasterized the background image, along with a vector shape of the dieline with no fill or stroke (as the image would not Rasterize on its own). On top of that we warped the text and other vectors. So we now have two warped shapes - one for the background and one for the text.
It appears this is a bug in the way Illustrator treats colours at warp stage.
Would be interesting to know if anyone else can replicate this problem and thoughts?
Thanks muchly :-)

We are experiencing a similar thing with gradients values changing slightly which cause min dot value issues for flexo printers.  We have tried all of the different envelope option settings and nothing works.  The text issue you are having did you try turning off the Anti-Alias option? Did it make a difference for the pixelated text?

  • Why are my PMS colors different in CS3 & CS6?

I originally created a label in CS3, and just had to make a new one a different size. When I did the new art in CS6, the PMS colors are way different! I basically copied and pasted the old art into the new file. I have replaced all PMS colors, but they still do not match the old version. What's up?? Can anyone shed some light on this? The original version (in CS3) is on the left and the new art in CS6 is on the right. Thanks!

Thanks Monika, but, OMG, I feel a headache coming on! =(  So, is it better to stay with the new Pantone Plus colors, or convert to the older version? How will this effect reprinting of jobs, if the client makes changes and I resave the file in CS6? Will the color be different now, if saved in the Pantone Plus? Maybe I need to do more reading up on this!

  • Please advise me on the best way to distort/warp/envelope this text

    Hi all,
Please can you advise me on the most suitable way to distort/warp/envelope this text. I need to make it fit exactly (heightwise) into the white area below. I thought this would be a very simple thing to do in Illy but I was mistaken! I have tried using the warp and mesh methods but am just not having much luck! I have even tried doing it manually, point by point (after expanding the appearance) but it just looks like a MESS:(
As you can see, the white arc shape is not consistent in height/thickness as it tapers off towards the ends. It is thickest/tallest in the middle, so I need to get the letters to increase in height there to touch top and bottom of the white area, and then taper down in height.
    Please can you help me?
    Thank you kindly in advance,
    Christine

    1.  Create text, select object.
    2.  Object>Envelope Distort>Make with Mesh
            Rows: 1
            Columns: 2
    3.  Align center of text with center of wheel.
    4.  Use  Direct Selection tool, Rotation tool to adjust points, Direct Selection tool to adjust handles.

  • When I use envelope distort, the text warps wrong.

When I use envelope distort on a a chevron shape, the text warps beyond the shape and new anchor points and curves are automatically added.  What am I doing wrong?  Here are images of what's going wrong: http://imgur.com/a/usHj2

I can't recreate your issue. I'm also not sure what steps you're following, but here's what I did:
I tried it with live type, too, and it still worked. You may try copying your two objects into a brand new document, and see if the issue persists.

  • Distorted picture odd colors - What is my problem?

    QT 7.0.4
In viewing some movies that have the extension .wmv it is like viewing cable channels I don't subscribe to. The picture is distorted and the colors are all wrong. The sound is ok.
    I have installed Flip4Mac.
Are there particular preferences I need to set?
    Thanks.

Sorry. You get what you pay to get.
Many WMP formats and files are poorly encoded (or worse, illegal copies of copy right protected work).
    Some tips:
Don't try to enlarge the viewer. This only introduces artifacts and makes viewing even worse than it was at normal playback size.
If you're trying to view HD content pick the smallest dimension size offered. Larger dimensions may require more "oomph" than your machine can handle.
The new agreement from Microsoft and Flip4Mac (and the end of WMP on Mac's) may improve over the years.
All is new again and everyone has to learn new tricks.

  • "Envelope distortion" in Photoshop

    Hi Guys
I need your help in solving one urgent problem that I have.
I have to distort a rectangular layered image using a given template (fan shape) in Photoshop. The image has to follow the template very precisely (it's for cup printing) and to stay in layers (lenticular design). I know how to easily do it in Illustrator, using the envelop distortion, but then my image will be flatened so won't work for my lenticular design. So please help .
Hope to hear from you guys soon.
    Thanks a lot
    Ela

Attachments to email-replies don’t work, please use the camera-symbol in the browser.
You could save the layers as individual files (File – Scripts – Export Layers to Files), load them all into Illustrator and apply the same Mesh to all of them individually and align them afterwards.
Another old method would be the Polar Coordinates-Filter (Rectangular to Polar), by the way.
Edit: Like I mentioned before Warp – Arc may actually suffice if the Layers are identical in their dimensions (if they are not one could always fill their backgrounds with white and clip them identically); could you maybe post a screenshot of the File’s Layers Panel?

  • CS6: Can't switch off color management in the printerdriver when photoshop manages colors

So this is weird: I'm using CS6 Extended and Lightroom 5 on a Windows 7 Pro machine, printing to an old Canon Pixma Ip5200R. When i print from Lightroom, i am using a special printer profile for the pixma and my photopaper, so color management is switched off in the printer driver. The photos print fine.
Now when i print the same photo from CS6, it has a magenta color cast, so clearly something is wrong with the color management. Even though i am using the same printer, the same paper, the same printer profile and  - of course! - had set photoshop to manage the colors, and switched color managent off in the printer driver. The magenta cast could be an indication that the photo is double colormanaged.
It took my quite a while to find out what happens, and this is really weird: When i re-checked the printer driver settings, i noticed that the color management settings did not stick. The canon printer driver offers the options "driver matching" "windows ICM" "none", e.g. having color management done by the printer driver or windows, or switch color management  off. So when i go to the PS print settings and set it to "photoshop manages colors", add the correct printer profile, i have to check the settings in the printer driver and make sure that color management is set to "none". I set it to "none" and click OK. Now everything should be configured correctly. But it's not - because when i re-check the print driver settings, i see color management is set to "diver matching". I can go to the print driver settings again and agian, but whenever i check, color management is set to "driver matching". This setting simply does not stick. No wonder i get a mangenta cast on my prints, the colors are doublemanaged by photoshop AND my printer driver.
Now, this is getting weirder: Only the color management settings don't stick. I can change other settings like print quality and the stick.
But - how do i get rid of this? The culprit seems to be photoshop, not the printer driver. If i print from lightroom, i can change the color management settings in the (very same) printer driver and they stick. When i set the photoshop print dialogue to "printer manages colors" i can change the color management settings in the (very same) printer driver - and they stick! So this looks as if photoshop stops me intentionally from using the correct printer driver settings, that is from switching off the printer drivers color management if it is set to manage colors.
I have already resetted my personal photoshop preferences, but this changed nothing. What am i missing? What is going wrong? Your help is very appreciated.

Hi all, Just to let you know that I finally solved my problem myself.
Essentially what had occurred was that I had updated my Epson driver for my printer , but it hadn't installed, despite informing me that it had! To cut a long story short when I checked in System preferences the older driver for Leopard O/S was still the current driver. I proceeded to ask Epson support for assistance, bu despite their efforts I could not immediately resolve the problem. They were directing me to my Utilities program to remove all traces of my current driver from Printer Utility which did not exist. When I queried this they stated it was not always visible and I should proceed to the next step then install the new driver. Problem was they required me to access this invisible utility in order to complete this process, and yes before you ask I had informed them I was using an Intel Mac with Snow Leopard 10.6.2 O/S. Finally I ignored their advice and took the following steps:
    1. I opened System Preferences and double clicked the Printer & Fax icon.
    2. I highlighted my Epson R2400 Pinter and removed it by clicking the minus sign at the bottom of the Printers window.
    3. Next I did a search and deleted any old drivers for my R2400 that were on my system with the exception of the new Driver.
    4. I restarted my Mac Pro.
    5. I reinstalled my new printer driver which I had previously downloaded from Epson Support.
    6. I restarted my Mac Pro and found that the new driver had installed correctly and full functionality had been returned to the Print Features Dialogue box i.e I could now turn of color management and access advanced features to set the quality of printing using the full spec of the R2400.
Hope this post will be helpful to others if they have a similar problem

  • How to make a envelop distort like in this image

Hey guys I wanted to know how can i make a envelop distort like this image in adobe illustrator CS6. Im running it on Windows 7.

I still believe the originator of the artwork at least tried to keep to the straight and narrow. The crucial question is whether Hunter wishes to (too).
When zooming in as far as possible on the image (so it is 190 mm wide on screen), as far as I can see, the spaces are still constant width and the lettershapes at top and bottom are still straight, especially evident for the TE at the end, so I believe any deviation would be an inaccuracy. The rounding of the basically horizontal segments as in Envelope (or Art Brush) Distort should be clearly visible.
I believe Hunter may be able to make sure by zooming in on the actual artwork, and maybe measuring distances between key Anchor Points, and/or dragging with the Line Tool between them, in the latter case the top of the TE would show the greatest deviance from straightness.

  • A color problem in Apple's publishing App

I was wondering if you could help me with this problem,I really need some help, and here it is:
There is a Color problem in Mac publishing applications like Pages and Keynote, including iBooks Author, which really confuse me a lot。
When you use a certain color space(sRGB IEC61966-2.1 in this case)to create some colors with Apps like Illustrator CS6,Indesign CS6 & Photoshop CS6 etc. ,they look totally fine。BUT when you use iBooks Author (V2.0)to create the very same color with the very same color space, colors still look fine in the color panel, and here comes the problem:they look totally lousy in the actual document!!In fact, they look much lighter and faded。(See Image 1&2)
    Above:Image 1
    Above:Image 2
And this is also terrible with photos you import。(See Image 3)
    Above:Image 3
Please tell me what I can do to solve this problem。I know maybe this is some sort of “basic” and “general” knowledge, but I really need your help。And I can't thank you enough if you can provide some effective solutions。

As far as I can see,  the colour pallet and how colours are seen in any app on YOUR machine will depend on the computers System Preferences>Displays>Colour - choose your preferred setting.
I suggest first that you ensure that your colour profile settings are the same ( as your computer)  in whatever Adobe application or in fact any outside image processor you use.
Creating or using a colour profile in Adobe and having a different profile on your system - will tend  to  give different colour hues.
A point also to remember is whatever you set up and is  transferred to your product... when seen on an iPad may well be totally different again due to peculiarities and contrast / brighness setting of the iPad user.

  • PMS color changes to CMYK when file is closed and reopened

I got a .psb-document with a adjustmentlayer>solid color as a background. The color is a Pantone 354-C. When I save my document (CMYK), and then reopen it, I no longer get the Pantone color library but the default color picker box. I see no visible change in color though so I'm not sure if the color changes. If I click the color library button in my adjustment layer, it automatically pics the PMS color beneth the 354-C (that is 355 C) and I see a change in color. So I have to repick 354-C again.
Anyone knows what's going on here?

Spot Colors have no real connection to individual Layers in Photoshop (as of CS6).
If you want to use them you need to employ Spot Channels.
Edit: And your intended color is probably simply out of gamut for that color space.

  • [CS2, CS3]Envelope Distort with gradient sends Illustrator to sleep (almost)

    Hi there,
not sure if this is a well known flaw or not ...
    What I did basically:
    Filled a rectangle with a linear, 4-color-gradient
Did an Envelope Distort to it with 4 rows and 4 columns
Did some moves and rotations with about 50 % of the mesh points
As a result, nearly every action one might do to the artwork now takes an eternity to be executed. Why is this so?
Besides: Why is the file that huge? 12 MB ...
If you'd like to check the document:
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/u8t624
    Thanks,
    Klaus

It's slow here as well. Quad 2.66MacPro/Ai13.0.2
The obvious solution is to not use an Envelope distort and just make a Gradient mesh. I'm not certain why you'd be using an Envelope anyway. You can simply shape a gradient mesh how you want. Envelope distorting a gradient in this manner results in banding or internal edges that are generally undesired. Gradient meshs won't have these edges.
I'd guess that the envelopes is having to re-plot every aspect of the underlying gradient which is why it's taking so long. It's something in how you created to object.
If you choose Object > Envelope > Release. Deselect both objects. Select both objects and choose Object > Envelope > Make with Top Object. Then AI is back to normal speed when editing. At least it is here. In addition, when I did this to your 12mb file and saved, it dropped to 640±kb.

  • How do I mix 2 pms colors to achieve a 3rd color?

I'm running Illustrator CS6 on a Win 64 bit PC. Seems there was a time, in earlier versions when I could pick a pms blue and a pms yellow and achieve a rudimentary green by mixing 20% pms blue and 60% pms yellow, as an example.
I'm having a whale of a time figuring out to do this in the current version. I've been futzing around in edit/edit colors using the two pms colors I've chosen and although I can get tints of each color I can't seem to figure out how to get blends of the tints of each color.
Can anyone help out there? Please?

No reason to expand the spot color gradient they separate fine.
The explanation about overprint and it being an older persons tool is that many younger professionals are not taught production, the idea of overprint is totally foreign to them amongst other production wise work flow.
There are users in their forties that have production experience. That does not mean all young people are ignorant of their craft but it is less of an issue for them as other people take up the slack.
We see it all the time on the forum, unusual things like users not converting RGB image files to cmyk in photoshop before placing them into an Illustrator file nd wondering why the color is off.
They often confuse dpi for ppi. the do not know the difference between spot colors and process color equivalent, don't know the difference between vector and raster! the list goes on.
They don't understand why you can't overprint to cmyk process colors.
There aree really an interesting lack of apprentiship in the filed these days.
However even the less eexperience do know heir trade as it is today and oftebn surprise us with interesting techniques and knowledge of software and hardware issues.
They say you are as young as you feel and i don't feel a day over 67 which is amazing since i am 67. I guess all that expercise has paid off. I am really tired.

  • Envelope Distortion help?

I am trying to make an envelope with 2 objects. One is a symbol set of circles, and another is a patch of stars. every time I try to make the envelope, it keeps saying that there needs to be a single path, I'm assuming that means the circles need to become 1 path somehow. I don't know what that means. I've read the directions over and over and I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I hope someone can help.

uploader still isnt working for some reason, so I'll try to explain it better.
I have 2 objects, a circle and a patch of stars.
I used the circle and created a symbol set which I colored and grouped.
I grouped all the stars together and placed the group of stars on top of the circles.
Do the stars need to be made into a symbol set too?
Then I tried to use the envelope distortion but it kept saying there needs to be a single path. Sorry I can't upload a picture...

  • CS6 not opening in CS5  color books error

When I save a PhotoShop CS6 file, the computer we still have running CS5 will not open the file.  The error message is... "Could not complete your request because the specified color book cannot be found."  What are the work arounds for this?

There was not a PMS color channel but there was an alpha channel.  I deleted the channel and had them open the file in CS5 and it opened fine.

  • Mesh and PMS colors

Is it possible that a mesh doesn't support PMS color separations?
We have a Illustrator CS4 logo containing a mesh with a spot,
but when imported in Indesign CS4, the spot color from illustrator doesn't show up
and the color turns out CMYK in color separation.
    What do I do wrong?

As far as transparency in Illustrator that goes way back before Adobe
brought such support. I had a plug in from Hotdoors I think as far
back as version 8 and I believe the plug in pre dates 6.
The bug problem was convincing them to bring it into ID and to
convince Quark as well for Xpress. They told me they were not certain
it could be done in a layout program, vector programs were different.
Vector programs were different. I pointed out that they had vector
tools in the layout programs, they agreed but still said it was the
only request for it they have ever had so you are correct I can be a
victim of they same thing they suffered from and cannot see the
possibility that sits right in front of me.
I would be very interested in seeing this for architectural
photography and presentation of designs in a photomontage project this
could be useful and very billable.
