CS6 File Sizes

Hi
In general, I save my documents as uncompressed TIF files. On a recent project I have noticed that the files being created appear particularly large and are significantly bigger than the size indicated in the status bar.
An example:
Document is 16-bit RGB with Background layer, copy of background layer, a new layer that contains a small amount of retouching work and 3 curve adjustment layers.
Status bar shows Doc 223.3M/502.1M.
Saved file size as uncompressed TIF is 1.22 GB. This would seem rather large to me, considering how many layers are in use. Perhaps I have just overlooked the size of files generated before. I do note that deleting unused layer masks reduces the size of the saved file to about 989MB.
I saved the file as a PSD for comparison and the resulting file is 611.7 MB (with Maximize Compatibility turned on).
So, I am wondering if the above is considered normal and, if so, can anyone clarify exactly what the second figure in the status bar shows? Does the size displayed in the status bar refer to the document size when saved as a PSD file (rather than uncompressed TIF), is it merely an approximation of the saved file size, or do have an issue with my installation of Photoshop?
For information, I am using Photoshop CS 6 Extended (13.1.2) on OS X 10.8.2.
If anyone could clarify the situation for me, I would be most grateful.
Many thanks
Liam
Forgot to add that I am not using any smart objects.

My guess is that the document contains a slightly cropped 40 MP (7264 * 5440) 16 bits per channel RGB image.
When saving to layered TIFF, the composite image compression is independent of the layers compression. Layers should always be compressed. However...
In 16-bit mode, only ZIP compression of layers is honoured. The choice of RLE layer compression results in no compression of layers. (Both RLE and ZIP compression for layers are honoured in 8-bit mode.)
You have composite image compression set to None. I suspect you have RLE chosen for layer compression (which is not being honoured), resulting in 989 MB.
Something like this is in your file:
Composite (3 channels), uncompressed = 223.3 MB
Background (3 channels), uncompressed = 223.3 MB
Background copy (4 channels), uncompressed = 297.7 MB
Retouch (4 channels), smaller than canvas, uncompressed = ~245 MB
Curves 1 = trivial
Curves 2 = trivial
Curves 3 = trivial
Metadata = trivial
Maybe you have some masks and the retouch layer is smaller than I've accounted for.
Anyway, if you choose ZIP for the layer compression then a smaller file should result. That will not affect your choice of no compression for the composite image.

  • Project Bloating and Repair in Premiere Pro CS6; Max Project File Size? Adobe Coders Welcome...

    Greetings.
After a few browsing sessions, I haven't found direction for a specific problem within a project bloat. First and foremost; we're always backed up. I have a restoration copy of the project that I will reference herein. Check that off the list.
Numerous people have posted here and around Creative Cow with problems regarding an expanding file size using CS6; watching files go from 300mb to 2.8gb. The unfortunate problem is when the project crosses a magical line that results in an inablity to open, import, export, or access sequences contained therein. Has anyone addressed a solution to repairing Premiere CS6 save files? Reducing file bloat? I haven't seen anything (recall the FCP7 repair days... solutions existed because problems were frequent; thankfully not so bad with Adobe).
Does anyone inside the code size know the maximum project file size that Premiere can read? I created a monster... Over 200 sequences utilizing 4.5TB of footage, stretching from Red codecs to EXCam to MPEG4 and H264. And for some time, the project size was manageable. Then, it inflated. And one day, randomly stopped opening. None of the auto-saves open.
Just curious. Files aren't the problem, but the 2.8GB save file is. Machine specs // etc. are openly available if required; no bad ram, no problems with all projects (just this one beast).
    Cheers,
    Jon Michael Ryan

this one is actually a really rare symptom of a flaky connection to the ipod on a Windows PC. there's more going on in terms of hardware on nanos and 5th gens than in the earlier models ... so if the connection is flaky to precisely the right/wrong degree, itunes will see the ipod, but misidentify it as an earlier version of ipod.
tracking down the cause of the flakiness can be tricky ... as you already know ...
just checking. have you tried connecting with a different (known-good) USB cable? does that seem to have any impact on the rate of occurence of the problem?

  • File size doubles from Photoshop CS 5.0/5.1 to CS6

    Hi there,
if this has been covered already I´m sorry, but anyway...
Working on a iMac27 with 12Gb Ram. Recently upgraded Photoshop from CS5.0 to 5.1, then shortly thereafter to CS6. What I noticed is that the file size of opened files with layers roughly doubles from CS 5.0/5.1 to 6.0. Everything seems to stay the same with a single-layer file, but not with files with several layers. Opening and saving files seems to have slowed down somewhat, but not drastically, but having a file with fomerly 1,5Gb suddenly increasing to 3,4Gb size is somewhat problematic because of limited Ram, because it effectively limits the amount of layers I can pack into one image file.
    Any input is greatly appreciated!

    Hi, thanks a lot!
    Ok, one after the other:
    Hello, are those document 16bits?
Yes - I saved a copy from the original file and reduced to 8bit. Slightly less when opened, but not substantially (from 1,51 Gb to 1,3Gb).
did you add the plugin to disable flate compression?
No, I wasn´t familiar with this plug in, but doesn´t it say that the file wize wil increase, but saving will be faster? Not sure if it would adress this problem at all.
Another possible cause would be the compatibility checkbox when you save.
I tried that (= unclicking the compatibility check box), and the file when unopened on the desktop was much smaller (down to 60Mb from 240Mb). However when opened it was still the same issue.
Are the settings in the infobar the same?
Not sure if I understand what you mean.... In the opened file, or getting info on the file on the desktop?
The filesize is the uncompressed one.
At the bottom of the image window it gives me 2 numbers: The left one is much smaller (163Mb), the right one is roughly 1,5Gb. Just opened again in PS CS 5.1: Left one is the same, the right one says 633Mb (16-bit file). So CS6 actually makes roughly 2,5 times the file size out of it.
Did you check on the hard drive if the file size changes?
Just did, the file size remians the same.
Kinda surprised that no one else seems to have encounterd this problem. I recall Chris Cox having made a comment about overall sluggishness of CS6 when opening and saving, and he remarked that it´s the "well known" layer management issue in CS6. Not sure if this somehow relates also to my problem.

  • In CS6, why the file size remains same after croping? And how do I reduce the size after each cropin

In CS6, why the file size remains same after croping? And how do I reduce the size after each croping? Thx

Select the Crop Tool and check the box [  ] Delete Cropped Pixels and you should see a reduction in file size.  With the box unchecked, the data is still maintained in the document, you just can't see it.

  • Anybody know how to increase the plugin file size limit in Photoshop CS6 to greater than 250 mb?

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to increase the plugin file size limit in Photoshop CS6 to greater than 250 mb and how to do it? Can plugins running in PSCC handle larger file sizes than CS6?

Wow, thanks for getting back to me!!
I am running the latest version of HDR Soft Photomatix Tone Mapping Plug-In - Version 2.2 in Photoshop CS6 on a fully loaded solid state MacBook Air. When I attempt to process files exceeding 250 mb with the plugin I get an error message and the plugin will not work. The plugin works fine with anything south of 250 mb. I have also optimized the performance settings in CS6 for large file sizes.
The standalone version of HRD Soft’s Photomatix Pro easily processes files well in excess of 300 mb.
I have contacted Photomatix support and they say that 250megs is simply the max file size that Photoshop will allow to run a plugin with.
So is there any setting that I’m overlooking in Photoshop CS6 that will allow me to process these large files with the plugin? Or if there is indeed a file size limit for plugin processing in CS6 is the limit higher in CC?
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Photoshop CS6 & Doc Size & File Size???

Working on a collage and have a relatively scall document, 6"x10" at 300dpi and used the Place command to add images and arrange and have 14 layers. The images were resized to fit using the Transform scale too. Was watching the document size at the lower left of the document window and it showed that the Doc was 34.3 M/178 M. Looked good so I went to save the beast as a PSD. At 75% of the save it threw an error message saying the document was greater than 2GB in size. Hmm, why did the doc size show otherwise. So ended up saving as a PSB whic worked. But the responsiveness of my system went to hell until I shut down Photoshop. I mean it was almost unresponsive. Starting Photoshop again, opening the PSB and making a few changes and my system was flying again. So maybe processing the PSD then throwing the error managed to grab all the resources.
So maybe there are two issues I have seen, one is Photoshop reporting the wrong doc size and the other bad error processing?
Photoshop CS6 with the latest patch applied, Windows 7 x64 with 16GB RAM, i7 processor.
Here are a couple of screen shots that show the doc size problem

I appreciate your desire to make Photoshop work the way you want it to, but why not consider placing the images as flattened raster layers?  Work at a higher resolution if you're concerned about losing quality in moving them around and rotating them, but you should really ask yourself:  Why do I want to fight with this ridiculous "smart object" embedding scheme and fight with such a huge file size instead of doing it the prudent way and ending up with a file that's much more efficient?
    Noel
I can not answer for Mike but I can tell you why I do collages some what like Mike placing user image file in as they are.  Populated Collages done that way are still Photoshop Layer Documents and can be tweaked by the user.  If you flatten and change image files on the user you destroy work that they have done creating layered images so they can be tweaked using these layers. The way I look at it is populated collages are works in progress untill they ready for final output. Flattening and Pasting in resized image are destructive processes and may even change composition by croping images. I feel it best not to distroy users work if at all posible.  Let the user do that if they wish to.  Using Smart Object let user use any image file they want, Any size, resolution and Image format that Photoshop support.  If the user chooses to use RAW files, PSD files  or any other it their choice and they may have a good reason to use PSD files for a given collage.  When the collage is ready for final output the user is free to flatten and save a compressed jpeg if the wish to save disk space and keep a copy of the collage. They do not have to save a layered collage if they don't wish too.  They only need to that if the batch process collage for later tweaking or the want to continue to work on the collage at some future date.  You don't fight you use smart object. They are only huge if you save layered files their rendered layers are not huge. If the filel is falttened the total rendered flat layer is just canvas size.

  • MP3 File Size in CS5.5 & CS6 Compared to AA3

    Background.
I am the learning materials coordinator for a Barbershop Chorus and, during the qualifications process, members will email me a recording of their voice singing a song, while in the chorus, for which they have to note and word perfect for them to be qualified to perform that song with the chorus.
I use AA to convert the files they send me to the smallest high quality MP3 I can so they are easily listened to by the person receiving the file and the file size will be relatively small.  Since this is a learning process ASCAP/BMI copyright issues do not apply (the Barbershop Harmony Society has verified this with them).  With the advent of CS5.5 and, subsequently, CS6 the file sizes for a VBR, highest quality MP3, have grown to almost twice the size as before.
    AA3, 2870k
    CS6, 6034k
Obviously I'm still using AA3 for this conversion though I would like to standardize on the latest version of the software.
    Any thoughts?

I performed a quick test comparing an 18 minute stereo file saved in CS6 and 3.0 as MP3, VBR, Highest Quality.  The CS6-generated file was 28MB, while the 3.0 file was 22MB.  However, Audition CS6 uses a newer compression kit that no longer supports Mp3PRO encoding. (Fraunhoefer no longer supports this scheme either, and I, personally, was never that impressed with the results.)  Finally, the "Highest Quality" mode in CS6 encodes around 200Kbps while Audition 3.0 typically encoded around 163Kbps in Highest Quality mode.
I think you'll find a closer correlation between Au3 "Highest Quality" and CS6 "High Quality" VBR presets, when comparing the resulting file size.  However, CS6 Highest Quality should sound better than Au3.

  • Premiere Pro CS6, large project file size - crashing etc

Working on a project in Premiere Pro CS6 - also incorporating after effects and using 2 external plugins (Beauty Box and Factory Pro FX).  Project is over 500MB, lots of comps, titles etc.  project seems to be corrupt on my machine. .The project crashes continually. I cannot save my work, I cannot export, I cannot create XML and media is linking incorrectly.  When I pull the project in on my laptop (separate machine) which has CC 2014 running, the project is FINE.  That said - I need to work off of the more powerful machine to do this job - so need to find a way to troubleshoot.  Note - project opens on my partner's machine, she can save + export, etc - however the media in still linking incorrectly on her machine as well (note partner does not have the 2 plugins, beauty box and factory Pro FX) - that said, it still links to the wrong media.
We have worked out a work-arond where we pull all of the AE sequences out of Premiere and into separate AE project which has made the project workable again but we know something is WRONG and we need to fix for future ASAP.
    please help!
    thank you

  • What is the file size of photoshop cs6 set up

Whatever you define it to be.
By the way, you probably mean the file dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high), not "file size".

  • Flash CS6 vs CS4 SWF file size

    Hi,
I've been working on updating some banners built with CS4 in CS6 over the last two days and have seen a dramatic increase in the exported file size from CS6 over the original versions with minimal changes to content (text edits, same fonts). As a comparison, I looked at a 160x600 banner from CS4 with a filesize of 34,540 bytes and the same file when exported from CS6 is 41,057. I tried using the LZMA compression yesterday and that helped, but this is only applicable on Flash Player 11+ and the banners had to be saved at 10 or lower.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this is happening? I've wasted half a day recompressing the files down via 6 to get them out the door. Am I better off using CS4 for this stuff? Could it be a legacy file issue and I wouldn't see it if I built from scratch in CS6?
We checked out size reports and noticed that there was a difference in the font weight in both banners, this could account for part of it, but it was the same fonts in both so not sure why this is happening but it is very frustrating.

Didn't look at the file size of the FLA, just the SWF as I didn't even necessarily resave the CS4 as CS6. No edits were made, I tried it with a simple open and publish just to make sure I wasn't doing anything to change the file and the resulting file was heavier (kb).
I looked through the size reports and saw that while image compression was better in the CS6 version, the fonts were all heavier than they were in the CS4 version and this put it over the 40kb limit.

  • Maximum file size for importing into Premiere Pro CS6

    Hi,
I'm considering recording raw video, no compression at 720p, 30 fps for 20-30 min.  This woudl result in a file that is close to 80 Gbytes.  I'm wondering what the maximum file size for importing into premiere Pro is and if I need to split this file up into smaller pieces.  Any recommendations on how I may deal with uncompressed raw video that is pretty long in length?
    Thanks,
    Serena

There is bound to be some limit somewhere in the program, but you should be well below that. The biggest issue might be whether your computer is up to the task of handling it. If you will post your computer specs., someone will give you comments on that aspect.
    Good luck,

  • Reducing AI file size, without converting to another file type CS6

I designed artwork for a large banner (84" x 32") so my AI artboard is that large. As you can imagine, with all the text and graphics I used, this file size is 22.8 MB. I need to email this art to the printer, but the file size is too large to email. How do i go about reducing the file size in AI so it still maintains large format print resolution? Will saving to a PDF lose the print quality? I'm at a dead end... help!

For a 84" x 32" banner (vinyl, fabric/paper) a small amount of compression should be fine.
I would start out with the high quality setting which gives you compression but at maximum quality 300 dpi.  this should make your 22.8mb file much smaller, (my guess without seeing your art is you have an image in there and will get under 10mb)
If you need a smaller file yet,  go down to 200 dpi (change top 4 values to 200) and max to high quality to make the .pdf even smaller, and for a medium sized banner as you have that would look very good and you would have to look hard to see the difference, at a distance would be unnoticeable.

  • CS6 file "not compatible with this version of Photoshop"

We are using Adobe Creative Suit 6. Yesterday i've created a file, and today i cannot open it with any software. (Bridge shows the thumbnail but the file is corrupted.) I get the "Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop" error. The file contains multiple layers, without any masks. Originally it was a NEF file (Nikon raw). I used vanishing point, because its an interior photo. (it doesnt relevant for the problem) I have an earlier version, where the vanishing points are defined, but the textures are missing. Main question is, how this can be??? I worked on that version for more than 2 hours. The file size is small, it's only 133.579.959 bytes (133 Mb). The image is 4288 x 2848 px, 240 DPI, RGB 8-Bit, Fogra39 ICC profile. The computer is up to date, nor the hw or the softwares are corrupted. The file saved locally, so it's not a network problem. I saved the document, and left the machine for about 15 minutes, then i went back, so the save had to be complete. (on SSD it took about a couple of secs) The biggest problem is, i have to work with a large amount of photos in Photoshop. But after this i have some bad feelings about this job. We have to create these PSD files both for ourselves and for our client for further use. (It's a huge furniture factory) The hardware has 16 gigs of RAM with an Intel i5 operating system Windows 8.1. Any ideas? (ps.: i didnt' find PSErrorlog.txt file) Oh i almost forgot. After installing CS6 my Adobe Acrobat Pro stopped working in about 2 weeks... So. The job is waiting, but we cannot wait for a long time, we gonna loose our biggest client because of a sw error?

You write this is not compatible with this version. Did you install all updates and did you update the camera raw too?
