CS6 hangs on certain actions on certain file

Hi — I'm running CS6 on Mac 10.8.2 on 2011 MB Pro. The problem is that an action performed on a single file, in a single passage (about 10 paragraphs), is causing no end of spinning beach ball hangs and leading to many a force quit. Very frustrating.
The actions attempted that induce a hang so far include:
Copy
Paste
Paragraph Style change
Delete Page [!]
Delete Spread
This document is part of a 13-file book; all other docs performing fine when these same maneuvers performed.
Ran Repair Disk and killed prefs on CS6.
This is the second such document so affected. I was able to get all the content out of that other document and into a fresh clean file. Having trouble with that this time. But I'll find a way.
My question is — is there a way to "clean up" documents that obviously have integrity issues?

That's a really bad sign (being stuck -- .idml files are very compact). Give it a few more minutes before force quitting. I suspect, thought, that you'll have to force quit, and then possibly empty the recovery folder. IN any case you should make a backup copy of the file for safety and then I would recreate it from scratch. If you can, export the stories from the current file as InDesign Tagged Text and you can place those into a new file.

Photoshop CS6 Hangs on Macbook Pro When Saving File

I am running Snow Leopard with 8G ram on a 2009 Macbook Pro and CS6. Everytime I go to save or do a save as I just get the spinning beach ball and have to force quit PS. I do get the message PS not responding. I have reset the prefrences, have uninsalled and reinstalled CS6 but the same thing happens. I had no problems with CS5. I am running PS 13.0.4x64 bit.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I repaired permissions, changed the prefrences for graphics processor from basic
to normal and allocated 70% ram to PS. So far so good. Thank you for your responses.

Illustrator CS6 hangs (spinning beach ball) when saving files to the computer's local HD while having multiple server share points mounted.
I am NOT opening or saving the file to or from a server.
The server is mounted so that I can move my saved file to it once complete.
Unmounting the servers fixes the problem and Illustrator CS6 returns to being normal (not causing a spinning beach ball).
This is repeatable, not intermitent.

We were having similar issues working over a network. I believe it's a Mac OS 10.6 issue, something to do with the Mac finder searching for file dates or metadata on the servers. From what I understand, this has been fixed in OS 10.7. We can't yet move to 10.7 and after trying many possible fixes, found that a Mac finder alternative, Path Finder, fixed most server delays. It's not free, but you can give it a 30 day trial to see if it fixes your issue. Here is a link to discussions about other suggested fixes:

WebUtil uploads the files as Binary - so yes you could have some issues if you have a Unix host - however, that would only mean that there is an extra character to trim off of the end of the line read by Text_io.

I need to do a clean install of maverick on my 2010 mbp what disk do i use and how do i move certain files from an external hard drive

I want to do a clean install of maverick on my 2010 mbp. I need to know what disk to use and also how i take certain files off my external hard drive and put on my computer. When I was having problems with my airport they did a clean install and they pulled files of my time machine.   however they forgot to put the partition back in for a windows side. Originally I had Parellels on my computer. After my external hard drive got corrupted i called apple and they fixed the problem but didn't have me set up the time machine except for the external hard drive. Now my only back up is from the external not from the laptop.    I am not sure how to do any of this. I am not computer savvy...PLEASE I NEED HELP>

First, you need to make a backup of your MBP onto your external drive. I suggest you start by cloning your MBP drive to the external drive:
Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
     1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
         button.
     2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
     3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
     4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
         to the Destination entry field.
     5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
         the Source entry field.
     6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
This clone is fully bootable and also contains a clone of your Recovery HD.
Second, you need to do a clean install of OS X onto your MBP as follows:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
            because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should accomplish your goals. You will have a clean install of OS X on your MBP and a bootable clone of your old system and all your files on the external drive.

Is there any timeline soon that apple users will be able to open things that need adobe flash player? I can not even play any games on Facebook, I can't open certain files, pictures sent to me or things like forms I news to see when I am not home

I am so frustrated about Adobe Flash player. I can not play any Facebook games, open certain files and pictures and documents that I need to access because not only does this phone not do it but my old Palm Pre couldn't do it either. I have had so many times where I needed to access things either online or via email, or message that I can not even look at because of this. I have to wait until I for home or ask someone else to do it for me which is embarrassing. I rave about my iPhone 4S all the time because it is truly great except for this. When it use to happen with my Pal Pre I figures once I got my iPhone that it wouldn't happen anymore but I guess I was completely wrong. I have had this problem for years and always get a message saying that it's being worked on. Well a couple of years is a long time to work on it. I understand about contracts and stuff but why is it taking a company such as Apple to be able to get it for their products? I get a lot and always want to play the games on Facebook but I can't do it on most of them at least the ones I have tried. So I can not play against anyone at that time I have to wait until I get home or use someone else's computer or something. Please tell me that in the extremely near future that this will not be a problem anymore. PLEASE!! I am sure I am not the only one out there who is having issues and if you do get it available please let there be an upload/upgrade for current phones and not just for future versions of Apple phones. That just wouldnt be very fair to all of your loyal customers and tell everyone to get your products because they are great and end up leaving this little problem out until they by your phone. Especially if they just got the phone they have. You guys are awesome with technology I have faith that you can make this available to all Apple products old and new by uploads or upgrades. Thank you hopefully can give me some info about the status with this or if there wen is one. I would have thought that being a company such as you are that it would already be taking care of right from the beginning and not wait years to take care of somewhat that is very important ro have especially when there is so much our there using Adobe Flash now. My guess is they don't care. Most likely they're illiterate and don't know what a colon is for. They probably think it's a little-used character. Remember: these are the people who don't know the difference between "deprecate" and "depreciate".
I have the same colon problem as you do. But it's not the biggest problem I have encountered in Lion. If it was only that I'd be Mr. Delighted with Lion. There's worse than having a colon - uh - that won't cooperate. A lot worse, in Lion.

Here's an easy way:
Pick the user that you want to eliminate (making sure that the remaining user has administrator privileges) and move all of the data that you want to keep into the Shared folder. Reboot or log out and login to the user you want to keep. Copy all the data from the Shared folder into your account - placing it neatly in folders (Documents, Music, Movies, etc.).
Once the data is moved, log into the account you want to delete just once more to make certain that you've grabbed all the data you want to keep. Log out and log back into your admin account and go to System Preferences>Users & Groups and delete the 'old' user.
That should do it.

Do a backup before doing anything.
If you want to make a clean install of Mountain Lion, boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R) on a restart, use Disk Utility to Verify/Repair the disk and run Repair Permissions. Then erase the hard drive using Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format using the Options button. Reinstall Yosemite. Restart normally and test. Use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to import what you want.

"application cannot be found" when trying to open certain files

Recently i upgraded my computer to Mavericks recently and I've been having a problem opening certain files. In one day I upgraded to Mavericks and I also updated my Adobe programs to the Creative Cloud. Ever since then I cannot open any of my Adobe files. They are all saved as under the CS4 legacy format. I uninstalled CS4 after installing the Creative Cloud. Every time I try to open one of these files previously created in CS4, whether it is a photoshop ot illustrator file, I get the error message "The application cannot be found". I also can see no preview or thumbnails for the files. I talked to Adobe Support and we went through a process of deleting my preferences and it didn't work. I restarted my machine and it worked. It worked for a day and now after starting up my machine today it is saying the same thing again. After a while it just out of nowhere started working again. I'll be clear and say that I was logged into my adobe account and there were no network interuptions.
By the way, the new versions (Creative Cloud) of the adobe programs all work just fine and If I save something then it works fine. It is only when trying to read a file from a previous format.

If you are attempting to start Adobe Creative Cloud by opening a file created by its previous version, open the Adobe Creative Cloud app first, then choose Open from its File menu and select the old file. The files you are attempting to open were associated with the version you used to create them, which is now gone.
After opening them, save them again. From then on, opening them will probably open Adobe CC directly.

Wait_for_file() not working for certain file names

I'm using wait_for_file to poll for files in a certain directory. I've used this in the past for other projects and never had an issue until now.
What seems to be happening is with certain file names, wait_for_file is returning a 1 (meaning at least one file found), however the file list is coming back as blank.
For example:
If I put a file name called cs.p.P110113CN.b.110114 in the directory, I get a blank return file list.
If I then rename this to 110114, it works fine.
Here's the code I'm using:
wait_for_file($GV_InputDirectory || '*',0,0,1,$GV_InputFileName);
$GV_InputDirectory varchar(1000)
$GV_InputFileName varchar(100)
Any ideas why this might be happening? Renaming the file isn't really an option as it's a standard format that we've used for years.

I'm wondering if it's something to do with the length of the directory/filename combined?
If I place a file called "110114" in there, wait_for_file() works perfectly. If I change it to "cs.p.P110113CN.b.110114", I have problems.

Illustrator CS6 Running an Action on Multiple files in a folder

I'm having trouble getting this to work and was hoping someone could shed some light for me.
I created a action in Illustrator CS6 (on a PC) which opens PNG files, scales them onto a 8.5 x 11 page, saves them as a PDF into a output folder on my desktop and then closes the page. The action works great and does exactly what I had hoped for.
Here is my issue:
I now have a need to do this on multiple files at the same time. Using the Illustrator Help menu, I found out about Batch processing. The tutorial says that a batch can be run on a single file or on a folder of files. Bingo! That's what I want. Problem is, I can't get it to work.
After setting up the batch with the following settings: (note: I didn't use a destination folder because I have the action saving the pdf into an output folder on the desktop).
According to the help page, it said to use Override Action "Open" commands which Opens the files from the specified folder and ignores any Open commands recorded as part of the original action. I thought this is what I needed to open all the files in the folder, because when recording my action, I had to use the open command to open a png file. It wouldn't just let me choose a folder. If I don't have the open command in the action, nothing happens.
My main issue is getting multiple files from within my input folder to open when running the action. The only file that opens is the file that I recorded while creating the action. If I remove that file from the folder, nothing happens at all.

I tried creating the Action it works perfectly except the CS6 to CS5 conversion.
Is there any way to achive converting to CS5 in Action?

Can't open certain files from Dock or Finder Window

Since going to OS 10.6 certain files won't open from the dock or by double clicking them in a Finder window. I think this may only be Excel files. Not all of them behave this way. I haven't found a pattern yet. My dock set up has Folders displayed as lists. When I navigate to a file in a list it should open when I release the mouse. Some do, some don't. Same with finder window, some docs won't open with a double click. They can only be opened by going to Excel and navigating from the File > Open menu. I often Save As on files as I build a new show on top of an old one. Probably an Excel issue. Any ideas?

Nope. For example, one folder has two xls workbooks, two Word docs and a pdf. Only one of the xls workbooks won't open. All the other files open normally. When I try to open the problem xls workbook, whether from the dock or the Finder window, I end up in Excel, but without the workbook opening. When I quit Excel, the problem workbook started Excel, but didn't open.
Update - I'm seeing something now. I use Excel to build "shows," I'm a production mixer for television. I went to one folder, five xls workbooks open fine, four do not. The four that don't open were modified (Save As with changes) with each "show." This was the first pattern I've noticed and only because that particular subfolder had the four workbooks with that relationship. The other xls workbook I described has the Save As file in another folder, but I'm not sure what the original file was. Note - those two "corrupt" files are unrelated, they had different "parents."
What could I look for in the original file that won't open and passed that gene onto its spawn?

QT wont play certain files all of a sudden

I updated my QT 7.2.0 to 7.2.2 and QT wont play my mp4 files, I get an error saying ' movie could not be opened an invalid sample description was found in the movie' . Also it wont play the audio on some formats and I can't get ant audio from youtube. I have flip 4 mac. real audio. m player and divx installed, and I also downloaded some codec as directed by apple when it wouldn't play a certain file. can I go back to my original qt as it was working great. I previously bought QT pro but also had it when I bought 4.5 hd and have just upgraded to FCS 2 can I just reinstall qt from my FCS 2 dvd. And how or should I delete the codecs maybe they are messing QT up.

Thanks, by that I prosume you mean all divx codecs. But does that include x in the extention name ie npUpload.xpt . Also when I go to you tube for example the film plays but no sound. I downloaded vlc which will play my .mp4 files but with no sound. I Work on Logic Studio so I use a motu 896 converter but it does'nt seem to be that. Can I just reinstall QT 7.2 from FCS2 as that was working perfect. Once again Thanks
