CS6 Linking files missing question

I have an indd doc that someone sent me. I need to change some outside url links in the doc. The file was NOT sent to me in a package so the first thing I saw was there were some missing fonts. I had those missing fonts on my system and added them then exported the .indd file to a package sucessfully as I now see all the fonts in there.
But there are many images which are in the files pages but when I go to re link ID looks for the imgs in an external folder which does not exist.
How do I re link all the images ( which are already embedded in the id? )
the link info says it's missing but I see the images in the doc
thx
RD

The images you're seeing are low-resolution, preview proxies. If they were indeed embedded, you wouldn't be seeing them as "missing." You need to get the images, or complete your task without them, if possible.

  • Dynamic Link files "Missing"

I have never had an issue with Adobe Dynamic Linked AE files before, but upon rebooting my computer this morning and trying to work on a timeline with AE generated Title files - they are not there - I just have the red "Media Missing" where my titles should be. They all reimport just fine - and work - until I restart Pro....then they are gone again. Help?

I tried this solution(from the Wiki):
I'm a developer on the Premiere team, and we are aware of this issue. Most of you have already figured out that changing the offending clip somehow and undoing your change gets around the "media offline" problem. Unfortunately there is no way I know of to get the rendered preview files back.
A quick way to "reset" your timelines so as to work around the media offline bug is to turn off track visibility on the first track for all sequences that show the problem, then turn visibility back on (or undo). You will have to do this every time the project is loaded.
This problem will apparently be addressed in the Premiere Pro 3.1.2 update.
My dynamic linked AE Title files still appear as un-linked(Media Offline)upon restart - no matter if I re-imprt them or link them again via the right-click menu.

  • Pr cs6 xmp files missing upon project open

    hi all,
i'm using pr cs6.05 on mac osx 10.8.5.
when opening a project file i've already worked on, premiere is asking me:
    Where is file '00006.xmp'?
i'm using avchd footage in mts containers. so i navigate to the nested STREAMS folder where the 0006.xmp file lies. now, unfortunately all contained xmp files are listed but "greyed out", i.e. not available for selection.
i don't understand the sense in asking for the file but not allowing me to select.
also, i don't understand why premiere looses the connection to xmp files it previously used.
can anyone please explain how to proceed in this situation?
    thanks

  • CS6 local file path question

I have an external USB drive with all my local website files for clients, this drive is starting to behave badly. I already backed up the files on another drive and I need to know if I unplug and disregard the original usb drive and attemnpt to access the copied files from another drive will the paths automatically change?
For instance, if I have a folder with a path
Original drive / folder with local files/ localdreamweaverfolder
and try to access the same folders with the path change from original drive to
drive 2 / folder with local files/ localdreamweaverfolder
    will there be a problem?
    R

You should edit the site definition to point to the new location on the new drive. You should be golden once you do that.

  • "Missing linked file" dialog will not dismiss

Often, when I open an Illustrator file and I get the message "Could not find the linked file <bitmap file>..." The Replace/Ignore/Cancel buttons are unclickable, and there is absolutely nothing I can do but force quit Illustrator, losing all unsaved work. The keyboard commands Return, Command-period, and Escape have no effect, either. Has anyone else experienced this, and is there any way to dismiss the dialog that I haven't thought of?

Has your missing linked file problem been resolved?
Try option clicking doc apps when  Illustrator appears to be the forground app  you cannot pull down menus and none of the tools work. In reality Illustrator looks to be the forground app, but is not, as the finder got corrupted and is somewhere in between apps, and you may for exampel be able to swithc tools in Illustrator but they have no effect.

  • Linking Questions cs5: Linking within the Same file, Sharing links, file size bloat

I have to make print cards for my job. Print cards being a 1 page version of the Larger package layout that the place I work manufactures. On this print card is a section for customer info on top, and the print representation on the bottom. What I've been doing is using two files. The first file is the full-scale art on one artboard, and the customer info on the second artboard, but both within one file.
On the second file, I combine the two. I still use two artboard because it's a front and back print-off. The front page (1st art board, 2nd file), is the customer info at the top (linked from the 2 art board, 1st file) and the full art shrunk to fit below (also linked).  the back page (2nd art board, 2nd file) is the individual elements of the artwork, zoomed in for easier viewing. For the second page, I use masked links from the fullsize art, sized appropriately. The reason it's important that they all use links, is so if I update the art, it will update the print cards as well.
I've been trying to stream-line this process. This works ok, but the numerous links bloat the file size, and I have to email these to customers. I've started using "Flatten Transparency" on all my Print cards (2nd file) and saving it as a separate .pdf. This cuts out the links, but then all of my masked images are hiding the whole original file behind their mask. So then I started manually cropping each individual masked area, which helps, but once I've gone through this whole process, I don't think I've saved any of the time my template was supposed to save.
    file://localhost/Users/troubleinthemaking/Desktop/PRINT%20MINI%20EXAMPLE.pdf
      My questions are these:
Is there any way to link to elements within the same file? Like from a different artboard?
I've successfully 'Placed' an artboard from the same file, back into that file (but a different artboard), but this creates a never-ending Save/Update loop. I'd like a better way to do this.
Is there a way to have all instances of a linked file, draw from the same place? i.e. When you update a single link, all instances of that Link would update. plus this would, in theory, cut down on the file size.
Is there any way to automatically have every masked link crop itself after using the flatten transparency command?
Even if I had to select them first. I haven't had any luck selecting them all and then using the pathfinder crop tool. I've had to do each one individually.
I know this last one can't really be answered without seeing everything on my machine. I don't even know what info I'd need to give...
WHY MY FILE SIZE SO BIG!
    Thanks ahead of time.
    -Jefferson

    Jefferson:
There's a few things you can do to make your files smaller, such as using the Action "Delete All Unused Panel Items" which will removed all unused Symbols, Graphic Styles, Brushes and Swatches from your Illustrator files. Those little items add up to bloating a file.
You also need to examine the images that you place into your Illustrator file. Any unnecessary layers or channels? Can the files be flattened before being placed in Illustrator? You can always keep a "working" Photoshop file of all that extra goobledeegook and then flatten the file and do a "Save As" and place that in the Illustrator file. And that could be a Photoshop EPS saved with a TIFF Preview and JPEG Encoding (Maximum Quality), which will save some MBs.
But, you should never sacrifice file size for quality. If these files are going to print, you should be using an FTP program to transfer the files and not email them. Email should not be used for files over 5 MB. If all you want to do is send the customer a Low Resolution PDF Proof for approval via Email, that's fine and dandy, but send the final large size files to the Printer via FTP.

  • Download linked file  contextual missing ellipsis

Under Tiger 10.4.2 Safari 2.0 and 2.01 (on two macs a G4 QuickSilver & G4iMac) the contextual menu item DOWNLOAD LINKED FILE no longer has an ellipsis.
In prior OS or prior Safari versions the command via the ellipsis and a further dialog, allowed user to choose the download location on the fly. Now it is just auto downloaded to the SET download location defined in the preferenes (primarily used before for SAVE operations). Not fun if you wish to save a file to a different location on the fly as it worked before.
Apple can you add/put that feature back?

Wow! Thanks. An answer just 17 minutes after I posted the question. Many thanks. It WORKS too.
My daughter had the problem & I could not figure it out or find an answer. Spent 3 days mucking about. I guess I have lost too many neurons in my brain!
    Thanks again.

  • Re-linking files. Am I missing something?

I've set InDesign preferences for the Default Relink Folder to 'look in original folder'.
But when I open a document with missing links and click the 'relink' icon on the bottom of the links panel it just defaults to the last folder I looked in.
Also, if I use the 'relink to folder' option in the link panel's menu, is there a way to get it to search the folder for other missing links automatically?

Original file location only works when ID knows where that is. If the link is missing, ID doesn't know.
If the files in the folder have the same name as the ones currently linked, the relink to folder command should work on multiple selected links.

  • Dumb Question: Adding a Linked File

I'm an ex-Frontpage dillitante and new to iWeb.  I want to add a bunch of linked files, i.e., I have 28 files I want the user to have access to via a click.  When I drag them into a page, I get a little snapshot of the first page of the doc instead of the filename as a link.  What am I doing wrong?

If you want the files to be downlloaded immediately when the link is selected zip/compress them and link to the zipped file.
If the files are pdf files and you don't zip them they will attempt to open in a new window.  However, some browsers requrire a plug-in in order to view the pdf file.  Plain text files will open the the browser window.
If you haved a lot of files you intend to add to a single page it would be more expedient to upload them to your server and link to them there as you would to an external webpage.  That way iWeb wouldn't have to upload them itself when you publish the page.  It's just a more efficient method.

  • Question about lost linked files

I have an illustrator PDF with a linked photoshop PDF as the background, but have lost the linked file on my HD. The background image still appears when I open the illustrator PDF in acrobat and photoshop, but not in illustrator because it cannot find the linked document on the HD. Is there a way to extract the background from the illustrator pdf, so I can have a file of just the background that I can then re-place on the illustrador PDF?

When you open the PDF in Photoshop, the dialog should have two tabs. One should be Images. See if the image shows up there. If it does have Photoshop open that image and resave it anywhere you want and then relink it.

  • InDesign CS6 Links

Does anyone know if InDesign CS6 displays an alert if you link a missing file to an older version with the same filename?  Or, if you link a missing file to a completely different filename?  InDesign CS3 would display such an alert, which would give you the chance to catch a potential error.  InDesign CS6 seems to link to whatever filename you click on, without question.

This is something you'll have to look after manually.
Probably best to never have files of the same filename.
    You could have
    imagename_v1.tif
    imagename_v2.tif
or something that makes better sense.
    But follow a naming convention.
I have images for the web all the time and I would save it as
    homepage_170x120
    homepage_500x250
    homepage_50x50
this lets me know the right image for the homepage at the correct size.
I suggest you adopt a naming convention for your files to avoid confusions.

  • How to manage linked files with multiple designers?

    Hi,
I work at a small company with multiple designers (5 of us) where 3 of us work remotely. We use dropbox to manage our files so that everyone has access--we keep client files in specific folders and stock media in a shared folder.
Currently whenever we open a file that's been edited by someone else, we have to go in and individually relink the files. Some would prefer to embed the files, however this can increase filesize by 60-400mb. Our current files total in at around 500gb, so I don't think that's a viable option.
4 of us are on Macs, 1 on Windows. 1 has CS5, 3 have CS6 and one has CC.
    My question is this:
If we all have the same path to dropbox (or the same path to the file, either way) will Illustrator be able to automatically find the files?
    Eg. X:/Dropbox/...
If so, will it work cross platform?
I know InDesign has a better link management system, is there a good plugin that would help with this?
I'm going to continue to do my own research and testing, but I thought I'd consult those more knowledgeable than me.
    Thank you!

Thanks for your response. Currently, dropbox works so that it syncs online but also is stored locally on your hard drive (not like a network drive). So one person could have a different path to the dropbox folder than the other. As for the second part, that would be about the same as embedding it in the file as far as general disk space usage. We use many of the same stock photos in multiple files, so keeping them in the same location reduces the amount of space used. It wouldn't be a huge problem if illustrator used relative paths instead of absolute paths, but alas.
I was forgetting that Mac OS doesn't use drive letters, so there probably won't be a way for illustrator to read things as the same path cross-platform...
I'm still wondering if there are any good plug-ins which help find broken links.
I found this: http://techblog.willshouse.com/2011/01/16/adobe-illustrator-linked-files-fix/ which might be helpful, but I'm wondering if there's a better solution.

  • Dataset error on MAC for linked file

    Hello all,
I am trying to make use of Variables panel in Illustrator CS6 Mac version. I added a Path variable. Then placed an image in the document and added a variable for the link file. Created two datasets with default names. Then when I try to switch between two datasets it gives me error "The filter cannot complete because of an unknown error".
On PC it works fine on Mac why the Variable palette is not working. Am I missing anything here. If I just have Path or Text Variables it works fine.
    Please do let me know.
    Thanks all in Advance.
    Regards

    Hi Laura,
If you are using SBO 2004 you should not be using this method of loading the srf form (Loadbatch actions is for SBO 6.5). Here is code in VB .Net the load it - you can convert it (I don't have it in c#).
    Private Sub btnXMLForm67_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnXMLForm67.Click
    Dim oXMLDoc As New System.Xml.XmlDocument
Dim xmlData As String = "C:\Training2004\Code\SBOTest\VideoStore\XMLForms\AddMovie.srf"
            Dim oForm As SAPbouiCOM.Form
            Dim creationPackage As SAPbouiCOM.FormCreationParams
            'Create the FormCreationParams object
            creationPackage = oAppObj.SBO_App.CreateObject( _
            SAPbouiCOM.BoCreatableObjectType.cot_FormCreationParams)
'Specify the parameters in the object
            creationPackage.UniqueID = "SOS_MyFormID"
            creationPackage.FormType = "60004"
            creationPackage.BorderStyle = SAPbouiCOM.BoFormBorderStyle.fbs_Fixed
            oXMLDoc.load(xmlData)
'Just a sample for a XML string describing a form… same as used for LoadBatchActions
            creationPackage.XmlData = oXMLDoc.InnerXml
'Add the form to the SBO application
            Try
                oForm = oAppObj.SBO_App.Forms.AddEx(creationPackage)
            Catch ex As Exception
                Exit Sub
            End Try
'Set the form title and visibility
            oForm.Title = oForm.Title & "-2004"
            oForm.Visible = True
        End Sub

  • Cs6 Save file for Printer company

Question on AI master Parent file, or art brought into another AI file to send to printer?
I've created a flyer (2.83x11)  that I can now add 3 to an 8.5x11 sheet to get 3 flyers per sheet.  When I save the master flyer (the 2.83x11) I've flattened my text to outlines  at 1200 dpi then Rasterized my art to 400 DPi and then saved the file. OK
I then open a new art board 8.625 x 11.13 (for bleed) as I am printing to the edge (border less) I then place my Flyer 3 times  across  my artboard and when I go to save this to send to Printer here in-lies my question(s)
    1. When I save a new artboard with a linked Parent file will that linked info save to the file so that when my (Commercial  Printer) opens that AI file. Do I need to bring the linked Parent file with it too on my USB stick? Or will that artboard save all outlines and rasterized art on that 8.65x11 artboard?
Bringing me to a second question
    2. When I go to save that new flyer artboard of 8.5x11. I am asked or warned of 72 dpi rasterization of the newly placed flyer which should be saved and then placed at the 1200 and 400 dpi's as mentioned above. Yet I think I should go Effect>Rasterization> High or Other (fill in DPI)
Here is the question if I save that placed Parent, or linked file and then rasterize, choosing 1200 as is the text from the first saved file, it errors and tells me not large enough to rasterize that 1200 dpi.  IF I rasterize to say 400 dpi does this NOW affect that sharp text I saved in the linked Parent file of 1200?   In other words how do you save that file as it is saved in the master or parent Flyer when placing on an artboard for a commercial printer?
    CS6 AI not Cloud.

I'm going to take a stab at answering some if not all of your questions...
Question on AI master Parent file, or art brought into another AI file to send to printer?
    -OK, so far.
OK
    - Not OK.  As already mentioned, there is absolutely no reason to rasterize.  Instead, create a file, the 2 x 11 size ( if you want, but not necessary ) and then copy and paste that onto an 8.5x11 and add bleed there.  Leave everything live.
    - If there are bitmapped images that are not embedded, then you'd have to forward those onto the printer. Otherwise, the new artboard will have its own raster resolution setting which, in your case, should be set to High Res ( 300ppi ).
    - The final resolution is what you set your "Exported" raster file to.  But, as previously mentioned, all of this additional effort is for naught.  Your approach is setting up for prepress disaster(s).  Who gave you these file prep parameters?
    CS6 AI not Cloud.
    - Doesn't matter what version you use.  Doesn't make any difference.  I recommend you get Adobe's Print Publishing Guide.  It explains a lot of the information and procedures you will need to know before you proceed any further.  Not sure why you did the project the way you did?  Explain further.
