Cs6 mac wont open - preferences has been deleted

I have no idea how this happened.  I do have a backup on timemachine.  Which folders do I need to reinstate?

Are you getting any error messages when you try to open PS CS6? Can you explain the scenario?

  • My Accounts Folder in System Preferences has been deleted.

It's been a couple of months now that I have been without an account. I don't know how my Administrative name or user names have been deleted, but it has made it very difficult to go into disc utilities to correct my permissions, or to download anything. The reason is that I am being asked for my password that I used when I first set up my Apple. I have tried every combination imaginable, but keep getting the message that I entered invalid User Name or Password.
Because of this, I cannot do anything on Mac that might improve the performance. I have asked for help from Apple Support, but I was denied any help unless I pay a substantial fee. My AppleCare Agreement has expired and that is the reason I can't get help unless I pay a fee, which I can not afford.
If anyone has any answers as to how my Administrative name got deleted, I would appreciate your input. I don't even have a plus sign in the Accouts folder to add a User Name.

    Hi Miss Moo,
Could it be anything related to this, it can happen spontaneously also?

Once you've done that the computer reboots and it's like the first time you used the machine. Your old accounts are all safe. From there you just change all other account passwords in the account preferences!

  • CS6 Photoshop reads this when attempting to "Could not initialize Photoshop because the preferences file was invalid (it has been deleted). HELP!

Finally got a call this morning from an Adobe Rep and he explained to me the issue. He explained that I needed to uninstall the adobe product, in this case Photoshop CS6 and download it again and reinstall it! So, I did that and get the same message when attempting to open the newly downloaded software: "Could not initialize Photoshop because the preferences file was invalid (it has been deleted). Please, if someone could help me as soon as possible! I am very anxious to remedy this situation. Thank you!

This seems to have cropped up a lot recently. What has seemed to work so far is intentionally resetting your preferences:
    Reset Preferences
    1) Close the program and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Win)/Cmd+Option+Shift (Mac) during startup (not reversible)
    or
    2) Move the Folder. See:

  • My photoshop won't open, it says that the preferences file has been deleted. What do I do?

I was just working in my photoshop with no problems, I had just downloaded a free trial pluggin (Filter Forge) but that wasn't working, so I tried to close photoshop to re open it and it wasn't responding so I had to force quit it, and when I went to reopen it this box pops up..... "Could not initialize photoshop because the preferences file was invalid (it has been deleted)" I looked up how to fix this and I went under the library on my MAC to try and find the preferences file to move it because they said that would help, well I forgot.....the file has somehow been deleted. My other option that I haven't tried yet is to open photoshop and do the shortcut keys that resets everything but Im nervous to do that because I don't know what will get reset. Any help will be awesome I have several projects Im working on and need to finish!
    Thanks

If you have not saved your custom presets for some time you should naturally lose those when opening with cmd-alt-shift pressed and selecting to "delete settings file" – but you can consider this a learning experience.
Apart from the presets you also need to set your Preferences (Interface, Performance, …) again after that if you had in any way changed them from the default settings.

  • When I try to open CS5, I get an error message that it cannot initialize the preferences file because it has been deleted. How do I fix this?

The last time I used CS5, I changed the scratch disc in the preferences file; now Photoshop will not open saying that the preferences file has been deleted. I didn't delete the file. How do I fix this?

As you open Photoshop, hold Control + Alt + Shift (or Command + Option + Shift on a Mac). That will trigger a preferences reset dialog, Photoshop will go back to default state when you do that.

  • CS5 - Photoshop won't start:  preferences file  was invalid (it has been deleted)

    Environment:
    Win7 Ultimate - 4 gig ram - CS5 Design Premium
Seemingly out of the blue - Photoshop stopped loading and I'm getting two error messages :
first:           ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS5 Extended:  "Could not load actions because an unexpected end-of-file was encountered
second:     ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS5 Extended:  "could not initialize Photoshop because the preferences file was invalid (it has been deleted).
I've deleted the two Preferences Files - but they don't seem to repopulate on startup - (or if they do they are deleted per the error message)
I tried copying a Preferences file from another working machine but that failed as well.
In addition: Dreamweaver is kicking out the following error messages - but opens and seems to work normally.
The following JavaScript error(s) occurred:  Unable to open script file C:\Program Files (x86) Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS5\Configuration\Shared\Spry\Designtime\EditingUtils.js (error 2).
The following JavaScript error(s) occurred:  Unable to open script file "C:\Program Files (x86) \Adobe\Adobe dreamweaver CS5\Configuration\Shared\Common\Scripts\dwscripts.js" (error 2).
I'm in the middle of a big project and need to get back up quickly - any help would be much appreciated.
    Thx.

Run photoshop as administrator holding Ctrl + Alt + Shift, that should trigger a preferences reset prompt.
If that won't work I would do a backup and delete the entire Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings folder, not just the two files you mentioned.
As for your Dreamweaver issue, try deleting WinFileCache-********.dat (or FileCache.dat) from your Dreamweaver Config folder.
    Otherwise try deleting your preferences
    Exit Dreamweaver.
In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe.
    Rename the Dreamweaver preferences folder:
Dreamweaver CS5: Rename the Dreamweaver CS5 folder to, for example, Old Dreamweaver CS5.
Choose Start, type regedit in the Start Search, and then press Enter.
In the left pane of the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe
Remove the Dreamweaver preferences registry entries.

  • This file can't be opened because it has been deleted

When I tried to save an Appleworks 6 document by clicking SAVE (drop down menu) and then inputting a file name and then clicking SAVE I get the following message.
"This file can't be opened because it has been deleted."
This problem started yesterday. I also had this problem this morning - but -
I have just tried to replicate the problem and I can't
However, has anybody had this problem before? If you did you solve it, or did it just not happen again?

Although I've only gotten this message when I've had AppleWorks 6 open in both Classic & OS X at the same time, others get it like you with no specific cause. It usually is fixed by using Disk Utility to repair permissions and deleting the AppleWorks 6 preferences. See my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, for more on the preferences.

  • Can't open file because it has been deleted . . .

I am trying to help my aunt with her computer. Every time she tries to update a file or create a new file and save, she gets the message "the file _ can't be opened because it has been deleted." I have tried save as, copying and pasting into a new document, saving it to different locations and saving under different names. I looked online for possible solutions and found people who have posted the same issue, but I can't seem to find an answer . . .
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
This should only occur if this is a NEW computer or your first sync and you have information from another computer.
Has this iPhone been synced with another computer before?
    Transferring Purchases; http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848
If you follow that link your Apps WILL be on your computer and any music you have brought......
Now, do not worry, even if you do accidentally delete your apps, you can download them again for free with your itunes store account, just keep in mind you will lose any saved data!
Follow this and hit continue, the only information that could get lost is any content (music, videos etc) synced from ANOTHER computer that WAS NOT brought from your account.
Hope this helps and makes sense....

One idea is to hold down the cmd-opt-shift keys and start Photoshop. It will ask you if you want to delete the settings file. Answer "Yes" and it will create a new Preferences files. Photoshop should continue  to load.
