CS6 METADATA QUESTIONS

CS6 METADATA QUESTIONS
Working with record album saved in a wave format, on a computer running windows 7
I break the album into individual songs using markers which I name the title of each song, I check the include metadata box when I export each marker to individual file. In the ID3 metadata I enter the artist , album name, recording date, and genre. In the xmp under riff I enter the album name under product. Before I save each marker to a separate file.
The information that shows up in windows explorer is the file name, album name, and contributing artists. Unless you enter a space after the information entered in the metadata columns, such as album name, windows cuts off the last letter. Is this a windows problem or a CS6 problem?
Is there somewhere in the metadata that you can enter the track no. so it will show up in windows explorer track no. column?
3.Is there anyway to have the marker names entered into the id3 title column and the xmp/rff name columns.?
After the markers have been saved as individual files , windows explorer has the file name, album name ,and artist. I then open each individual song file and copy the file name into the ID3 title column and the xmp/rff name column, add the track no. in the id3 track no column ,and hit file save . At this point windows explorer no longer shows any information but the file name. In order to get the title, album name, and artist to show up in windows I have to hit file “save as” and then save it again as the same file name. Why? Am I doing something wrong?
After I get the information in the metadata of the individual songs saved in a wave format. I then save a copy in the mp3 format . Even though the id3 information is in the meta data of the songs saved in a wave format when I save a copy in the mp3 format the information is no longer available, Why? Is there a way to convert a wave file with id3 information to an mp3 without having to re enter it all again?
Is there another low loss format that would handle the metadata better and allow it to show up when converted to mp3?
Is there a more detailed help article on metadata standards?

I've been doing some workflow rehearsals with Pl and Pr (Still more to try out) and I have shifted my thinking a bit on how to use these two programs together in the most useful way.
I have started thinking of Prelude as the "Turbocharged" version of Premiere's Project window, bins, browser and metadata panel. If you start to think of Pl as a break-out companion, and use the two in conjunction, I think it can make for a very powerful combo.
I know that it has been suggested to only flow in one direction - use Pl first and then switch over to Pr, but since Pl's capabilities for marking, adding and searching for metadata is stronger, i have been going back and forth a lot.
In your example above, you can mark your comment (marker) sections in Pl and send over the clips you are interested in. If you find you need more clips or a different "Answer1", pop back to Pl and do a search, find the clip, and send over to Pr. It's like going back to the well for more media only when you need it. The search is much better over at Pl (in my opinion)
There are still a lot of new features I would add to Pl to make it more robust, but for now it is working well as my Clip org and Search in place of the meager abilities in Pr.

• LR 4 versus PS CS6 Metadata Question

I am new but am starting to use LR 4 and PS CS6 for about 25,000 images of golf course holes. I have added keywords, GPS coordinates, copyright data, etc to these images as well as collections for picks, star ratings, color ratings, etc.
In the workflow I have started using, I first take a selected image from LR and go to PS to use the lasso tool and content aware fill, healing tool or clone stamp to remove unwanted "distractions" in the images such as golf carts, extraneous people, cart paths, etc. I save these changes to the ORIGINAL image file. (I do this before I do anything else to the image in the develop module of LR or in PS. I need to know that I can "clean up" the image before I do other processing)
When I return to LR from PS after using these tools, I get a message that states "The metadata of this photo has been changes by both Lightroom and another application. Should Lightroom import settings from disk or overwrite disk ssettings from the catalog?"
Which option should I select? I have no idea what changes I have made to the metadata by eliminating a golf cart in an image using PS.
Thanks,
Mel

Saving metadata to file is not really a safeguard against catalog mishap since not all data is saved to file. For instance Virtual Copies, Collections, and Stacking are saved to the catalog only and are not saved to file.
The reason is (probably) that saving metadata to file makes it possible to display the Lr edits in Adobe Bridge - Bridge reads the metadata from file. But since Bridge doesn't have the features for VCs, Stacking, Collections these are not saved to file in Lr.
The best "insurance" against catalog mishap is to create backups regularly. I have set Lr to create backups on every exit (in >Edit >Catalog Settings >General tab) - I can always skip if I think it's not necessary. The advantage of having Lr do the catalog backup is that optimization of catalog and of the previews is part of the backup procedure.
Also, it ensures that Lr can read the backup.
To save metadata to file for all images, select <All Photographs> in the Grid View / Catalog Panel (above the Folders panel). Make sure that all of your external drives that contain photos are plugged in. Then go Ctrl / Cmd + A to select all photos. Then do Ctrl / Cmd + S to save metadata to file. Expect that it may take quite a while for all 250000 images. Alternatively you can do >Metadata >Save metadata to file
You can check the box <Automatically write changes to XMP> in Catalog Settings / Metadata tab. But this causes an old Lr bug to constantly send you the "metadata conflict" warning, and it may drive you nuts.
I therefore save to file manually. Whenever I have edited a bunch of images, I select them all in Grid View and do a Ctrl / Cmd + S.

• Canon T3i metadata in PS CS6 ex question

Canon T3i metadata question:
In Photoshop CS3 the metadata of each photo displays the time to the second the picture was taken. But in Photoshop CS6 EX ( creative cloud ) the data only shows the minute the picture was taken. I need the timing down to the second. Is there a setting for this?
Thanks.
Thomas

Curt and all, thanks for the reply.
Well, the exif info is only down to the minute.
For further info, when I open the exif menu window in PS CS6 ex the menu box says "powered by xmp(trademark)". I am wondering if Photoshop has eliminated the second span information?
I don't know where to ask my questions. Maybe there is a better forum?
Thanks again.

• Photoshop images with spot channels in Indesign CS6 (layout question)

I've got an Indesign CS6 layout that will have a spot varnish when it goes to press. Right now I've got a layout with psd files that have spot channels in them that will be used for the spot varnish.
My question is, in Indesign when I'm laying this out should I have one layer with all the psd artwork (with no spot channels) and then a layer on top of that with the psd files with the psd layers turned off with the spot channel showing? I want to make this easy to print in the office so by doing it this way I could just turn the spot layer off and print.
Will this work for the printer?
layer 1 psd files with no spot channels
layer 2 psd files with photoshop layers turned off with the spot channel showing

Besides the obvious extra work of tracking 2 images, there would be potential problems if the images needs to be scaled and moved, and you would have to assume people downstream would know what's going on—should the layer be on or off?
I would double check with the current printer—they should know the only way to view a spot is via Sep or Output preview by turning CMYK off—magenta could just as easily be process as spot.
Take a closer look at the Alias method. Here it is with your magenta defined SPOT VARNISH.
With SPOT VARNISH set as No Alias in Ink Manager and with Overprint turned on:
And with an additional spot color defined as white named CLEAR VARNISH. When you need to print in house alias SPOT VARNISH to CLEAR VARNISH and check Simulate Overprint in the Print dialog. You can get to Ink Manger via the Print>Output dialog or Swatches panel:
All you have to do is delete the CLEAR VARNISH before sending the job to the printer or exporting

• Another CS6 build questions thread

Hi guys,
My first post here, I've been reading lots on here today thanks for all the info!, I'm building a new edit of, mainly for pp & ae cs6. I think I'm there with components but would love to hear your opinions and experiences before I click the pay now button in case I've missed something or there's something better about to be released...ideally I'd like to order this in the next couple of days as I have an intense project next week but I could do it on current pc it will just be more painful!
So, I mainly edit using hdv or xdcam ex, lots of video layers & effects especially magic bullet etc...and my current setup doesn't even come close to cutting the proverbial mustard...
Am looking at following bits, but 1 question, a few years ago I had a dual Xeon system with a Canopus dvstorm card on I think premiere pro 1.5, and it was blazing fast lovely real time effects but more noticeable for me was the output render times, I've read a lot over the past three days and it seems that cs6 only uses the processor for output rendering, is this the case? Or am I missing something!?
So (based on videoguys DIY 9 and extensive research online)
Asus p9x79 pro (please advise if the ws is any better? It seems not and I have a pci FireWire card anyway...)
Intel core i7 3930k (c2) (can anyone tell me what the "rev2" difference is?
Evga classified gtx680 4gb (I read...and read...and read....and read...and decided on this over the quadro 4000 please advise!!!???)
64gb (8x8gb) ripjaws 1600mhz 12800 (I've decided to take a punt on these as I've read on here that Samsung lv (1.3??) is more stable...this is the part I'm least confident on so please please feel free to suggest what memory!?) I've gone 64gb as I understand after effect can use it?
256gb Sandisk extreme sata3 ssd (boot)
2 1tb caviar black (striped) (are the velociraptors worth it!?)
2 2tb caviar green (pre backup "dump" drive & music/sound effects etc
Fractal designs r4 titanium
I'm hoping that will speed things along a bit?
My main questions are...
Edit hardware my old Canopus DVD storm, and to a lesser degree my multibridge (now gone) add something, but on this setup there's no 'edit card' if that makes sense? Am I missing something (apart from an I/o device for capture p/tape export ((FireWire??)) any 'high end' work I do is on xdcam so no capture necessary?
Memory...what's the official line? Will the ripjaws work?
Gpu... Are the quadro cards better!? Or do they assume 'professionals' are less likely to over clock there cards and so offer longer warranty ;-)?
Any other criticisms/ recommendations?
Thanks

Quick update...Ive just ordered the parts hopefully arrive tomorrow and I can put everything together!
Thanks so much to everyone who contributes on this forum, I havent replied to all, but I have read SO many posts on here this week!
Have I missed anything (Apart from a hardware raid controller and 10 velociraptors!!!)
I may treat myself to a new Keyboard and mouse, I have a R.A.T 9 at the moment which I absolutley love! but get fed up with swapping batteries and so considering getting the "7" either that or the logitech mx revolution... any other recomendations?
Also was about to order one of these...
http://www.editorskeys.com/video-editing-keyboards/adobe-premiere-dedicated-keyboard.html
And will keep my shuttle xpress wheel which I never use...but am planning on trying out with this new system...

• Bridge CS6 metadata palette not creating bag array

I am having trouble getting a custom XML Bridge metadata palette to write bag arrays.
What I want is:
<dcterms:subject>
<rdf:Bag>
<rdf:li>term 1</rdf:li>
<rdf:li>term 2</rdf:li>
<rdf:li>term 3</rdf:li>
</rdf:Bag>
</dcterms:subject>
The result I get is:
<dcterms:subject>term 1; term 2; term 3</dcterms:subject>
My code is:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<xmp_definitions xmlns:ui="http://ns.adobe.com/xmp/fileinfo/ui/">
<xmp_schema prefix="dcterms" namespace="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" label="$$$/Custom/Schema/dcterms/Label=Dublin Core Terms"/>
<xmp_property prefix="dcterms" name="subject" label="$$$/Custom/Property/dcterms/Subject=Subject" category="external" type="bag" element_type="text"/>
</xmp_schema>
</xmp_definitions>
This code works in CS4 and CS5. I don't see any new requirements for XML panels in the CS6 XMP SDK, am I missing something? I also tried writing a simple dc:subject property, but it also failed to create a bag. The CS6 Bridge IPTC Core palette works correctly, so I have to think this is a problem only for custom palettes.
Thanks,
Greg Reser

Thanks Curt, but this is not a virus issue. Think about it, how could the ntdll.dll file be virus infected and yet only impact the running of this single application? That really wouldn't make sense now would it? That library is critical to many windows function and if it were virus infected, I would have more things to worry about that trying to get Bridge to launch.
I already did my homework on that before I posted here and tried some of the things suggested on verifying the integrity of my system files. The Digital Signature Information shows to be okay.
It could be that I upgraded this system from Windows XP Professional to Windows Vista Business and that I have an old (CS2) install that I did not remove from the computer. I have done a variety of things to try and get to the root, but to no avail. I am sure that if I were willing to start completely from scratch and do a clean install of the OS, I may be able to get it to work. I don't really have time to do that however, and since I am not the only person who has had the issue with Bridge failing to start, I suspect the solution lies somewhere within the architecture of Bridge in CS6 that is at the root of my problem.
I am hoping that someone from Adobe will finally figure it out and provide an update that works.

• Photoshop CS6 nooby questions/how do i?

I have alot of quesstions and dont really see alot of clear forum posts on what im looking for. so ill make this discussion thread in hopes of getting responses here. Also if someone knows a better forum somewhere for topics or discussion like i ask here PLEASE direct me im open to looking other places.
For starters. I would liek to know if there is a way to get a more realistic oil painting look using brushes or a extension or combination in PS CS6. The filter is rubbish imo doesnt look liek oilpainting at all really. Looks more like a colorized embossing tool. I did find a program Autodesk Sketchbook 6 which has a more paint like look and sets of brushes to accompany. But alas its not got the precision and options that PS has. So if anyone knows how i can achieve this type of effect whiel just painting with a tool id appreciate a link to or explanation on how I have seen 'prfessionals' in videos doing the exact thigns im asking about. Yet they could have been using a custom built extension of some sort and assuredly running a older version of the program as it ahs been awhiel since i seen it. So hope its out there and someone directs me to it lol.

Simplify is my third most used Topaz product after Adjust and DeNoise, but I probably use the other two 100 times for every use of Simplify, and never to produce an oil paint look. So I just had a play, and it works pretty well with lots of presets, an plenty of sliders to fine tune. It doesn't produce brush strokes though, so Photoshop's Oil Paint filter is a useful tool to use after Simplify.
Last I looked you can get a 30 day fully function trial of the Topaz products, and they are realistically priced.
But I suspect some of the examples you have been looking at did not use Photoshop at all, but Corel Painter. Check out some of these links

Please don't be fooled by all the Installation, driver, and high dpi posts you see in this forum. I think most of the regulars here HATE them, but answer them while waiting for interesting questions about how to do stuff with Photoshop. In fact this forum had a much higher percentage of interesting questions befor the CC Photography bundle deal was released, which attracted swarms of new users with little experience, and sometimes inadequate systems. It is rude not to answer them, but it is not always a rewarding experience with people sometimes thinking we are paid Adobe staff who they can vent at.
So if you have interesting questions, please ask them.

• Basic Metadata Questions

I'm a hobbyist photographer with lots of personal photos and some I might use for work related projects. I'm just getting started with LR and want to make sure I start right.
1. What metadata fields should I consider using that may be helpful in the future? None of my images currently have metadata applied.
2. Will star ratings and labels from Bridge show up in LR?
Thanks in advance.

In my opinion, the most important metadata is keywords. By faithfully attaching keywords to your photos, you enable yourself to do many different types of searching ... for example, you can EASILY find all pictures of your daughter, even if they are scattered in 20 different folders. If you want only pictures of your daughter at Christmas, that's also an easy search. Plus, keywords can be exported to your photos (while collection membership cannot be exported) so when you share your photos with others, or share on-line, if you want the keywords to be included with your photos, they can be.
I don't use bridge so I can't answer your other question.

• CS6 installation question

I'm sure the answer will be simple to some but I still have the question. I've checked FAQ, and a Google search just leads to Torrent sites...
I've installed a downloaded package of ID CS6 to a Win 7, 64 bit, PC and all appears to be fine. The install package had 3 files and instructions (which don't cover my query).
InDesign_8_LS16.exe launches the installer and unpacks all the required files from InDesign_8_LS16.7z - so far so good. What about the other file, InDesignFamily_8_Content_ALL.exe ?
What does it contain? Do I have to run it or has the installer already done so? Thanks for any enlightenment on offer.
David

For the benefit of anyone searching for this answer, I found only a collection of fonts which was useful in itself. This is available in 23 different language folders. Definitely useful rather than essential and, this was my worry, it doesn't install anything - just unpacks the file onto the desktop.

• CS6 "upgrade" question

I currently have CS5. I'm planning on getting the CS6 upgrade. I'm also planning on getting a new computer. My question is, do I have to install CS5 onto my new computer in order to install the CS6 upgrade version?
Thanks for advice.

No, you do not have to install CS5 on the new computer. When you install CS6 it will merely ask you for your qualifying (CS5) serial number. Keep in mind that you can't sell or give away the CS5 to anyone else if it is being used for the upgrade path.

• CS6 General Question

hey guys -
I have a pretty general question, that I hope is a simple answer. Will the (javascript) scripts that work in CS5 still work perfectly in CS6 if we upgrade? We have become quite dependant on our scripts, and we're trying to decide if the upgrade is worth it. So much about Photoshop and Illustrator was broken in CS5 and never addressed, so now I get pretty nervous about upgrading for fear of being less productive. Any thoughts/comments about existing scripts moving into CS6?

Your only real way is test for your self… In principle it should work but I've heard that a couple of times before. You will still have CS5?

• Premiere Pro CS6 Metadata Speech Analysis Issue

My office recently upgraded to CS6, and I'm having a problem with Premiere's speech analysis function. I've used the function in CS4 and CS5 without difficulty, but the same process isn't producing the same results with CS6:
On clicking the "Analyze" button in the Metadata tab, Media Encoder starts up fine and seems to be running without issue. However, when MediaEncoder finishes, it outputs the results in a *.CIT file, and the "Analysis Text" box in Premiere remains blank.
I have no idea what to do with a CIT file, and none of the applications that a web search of that extension turns up seem likely to help. Anyone have an idea of what's going on, and how to get around it?

i'm having the same problem but its creating a strange *.f4v file. did you find a solution?

• Cs6 crop question , not classic

Hi
i have a question about photoshop cs6 crop tool not classic
i really like the not classic crop tool
but i have a problem
the classic crop tool if i drag it to left photoshop moves the crop to the left , and if i drag to the right it moves to the right
but in the new version if i drag it to the left it moves to the right
ok ,it's just like lightroom
i tried to get used to the new behavior with no luck
is there a way , edit the registry or other way to change this behavior?
i mean i really love the new crop feature , i would love to use it and drag the crop to left and see photoshop moves to the left just like every other version of photoshop
thanks
best regards

If I understand what you're saying, what is confusing to you is that when you drag, you are moving the image itself underneath the selection, as opposed to moving the selection over the image. Drag to the left and you're moving the image to the left under the selection, so the selection remains stationary in its position relating to the window, but the selection is now positioned to the right of its original position relative to the image.
That's just the new behavior.
However, if instead of dragging from the somewhere inside your selection, you drag from one of the handles of the selection, the direction of the stretching of your selection will appear more like what yiu are used to, particularly if you are set to Fit Image on Screen.
If you play around with that a bit, you'll get the hang of itin no time.

Aaaaah, that is where your problem lies!
You either like the new Crop Tool, or you like the old, Classic mode. You can't have a little bit of one and another little bit of the other one.

• CS6 multicam question

Hi
I am on PPRO CS6.03 on windows 7 and have a question regarding multicam.
I just finished watching the multicam section on the training at lynda.com, but it leaves me with one question though.
I saw how to select the primary angle, and that PPRO would use the audio from that angle to cover the whole edit.
That is ok, but what now if I f.ex. do a concert edit, where I have a separate recording from the soundboard to my audio recorder device, and I want to use this audio for the whole edit?
How do I chose this instead?
Thanks
Ulf

After you create your multicam clip, right click on it and select "Open in Timeline." This will open a timeline with your stacked video tracks and any audio tracks that are synced up. Here, you can add in your second source audio and sync it with the video track. Whatever audio track you have with an active output (The speaker icon is on) will be the one that goes with your multicam edit. So, just mute every other audio track except your external audio source and hop back to your multicam edit. You can also do audio editing here in this timeline - such as applying effects or level adjustments - and that will be refelected in your multicam edit.

• Photoshop CS6 license question

I have a Photoshop CS6 installed on a desktop PC and sent the PC for repair. The tech re-installed the OS so I never had the chance to de-activate the s/w. I know I am entitled to 2 licenses (one desktop and one laptop). I re-installed the PS on the repaired PC and seems to work fine. How do I know if I have burned 2 licenses already or just one, without trying to install to a laptop to test it?
I can't seem to find Adobe's phone number on the website to ask the question so here I am asking the forum.

You can chat with some one here: Contact Customer Care
This is Adobe's phone number: 1 (800) 833-6687
I would wait until you do have the issue i front of you, then call Adobe. Otherwise they may not do much for you.
