CS6 Pattern Maker - Swatch backgrounds

It may be the way I'm using this feature and I've just missed it - it appears to me that you can't have a solid background to your swatch because the way it stacks/overlaps elements means that you will end up cropping some elements on some sides.
Try it just by putting a solid shape the exact size of the tile.
Any tips, hints, explanations guys would be helpful as what I'm doing at the moment is add the fill after the fact in appearance which I'd rather not have to do all the time.
Thanks.

Red, You are right, I can just move that flower, and it is all about the overlap. I'm discovering when I'm working on a grid pattern with a solid background and the overlap is set as left and top, that it helps to concentrate the elements on the right and bottom edge of the tile (where you moved the flower to) - setting the stacking order of elements up that way avoids overlap problems. The tiles are like fish scales in the way they repeat. This is taking me a minute to get used to. I also started locking that background square just to avoid moving it accidentally as I work.
But in a half-drop repeat (brick by column) it gets really complex trying to manage the overlap with a solid background. I just think solid backgrounds complicate things a lot. It's entirely possible to design patterns in this mode without a background and add a solid background later, but I think solid backgrounds on a separate layer would be a helpful future improvement to this feature. It's important to be able to judge the contrast and color relationships as you work on a pattern.
I still have a lot more experimenting to do-

Ive been trying to get a seamess pattern usings a number of different shapes but something keeps stumping me....
I do as all the tutorial say and yet it continally produces faint lines (which i assume are the join lines?) on some of the shapes. How do I get rid of these lines? What am I doing wrong?
I've linked to screen caps of both the pattern preferences as well as what it looks like (with lines).
(I can't add the images into this post it won't let me.

Turn off Anti-aliasing in the Illustrator preferences and see if it is still there. If it is, check your pattern.
In case it's gone it was just a screen artifact.

  • Pattern Swatch From Pattern Maker Filter

Is there a way to copy a new custom Pattern Swatch that you create using the Pattern Maker filter? I have often created a pattern that worked perfect but could only apply it to a layer. I want to be able to save just the custom swatch that patterns correctly so that I can use it as a repeating background image on a website.
I know I should know this, but it's something that I've never been able to figure out, or find in the Help Menu.
    Linda

    > Well, you could always open a new file the same size as the pattern you created originally and load it from the Layer Styles > Pattern dialog.
For some reason it tiles right when I apply the pattern to a large background. But when I attempt to create a simple square tile, even the same size as I started with, and attempt to use it as a repeating background on a web page, you can see the tiling.
    > Or how about after you make a new pattern in Pattern Maker and OK it, you have it load into an open Photoshop window, yes? You know the size of the tile the pattern maker made. How about making a selection the same size and use the arrow keys to move it into place and then copy/paste a new doc.
Sounds good on paper Welles. But I can't get it to work right. I still see the tiling when I save the file out this way and use it as a background.
I don't need this for anything urgent. And I know I can make something work for when I need it. The pattern I'm working with has a lot of texture so when it repeats outside of applying it in Photoshop, it just doesn't match up right. I had hoped there would be an easy way to capture the custom Pattern Maker Tile as a single image that could be used to repeat itself without seeing the tiling.
Maybe this would be a good feature request. Thanks for both of your input.

  • In desperate need of a Pattern Maker!!!

Photoshop CS6 no longer has the Pattern Maker nor supports the plugin that was available in CS5. Does anyone know of a software or 3rd party plugin that will create patterns from high res photo files? I've searched in Google, like crazy, but alas have found nothing.
I really a software to help me on tricky patterns for products at work. "Help me Obi Wan, you're my only hope!"

  • Pattern Maker in Photoshop CC?

Does anyone know if the pattern maker filter plug-in is available for CC, and if so where to find it? I did a search on the Adobe site and could only find info on downloading the pattern maker filter plug-in for CS6.

There are the scripted pattern features in 14.2.  I don't knoe exactly what Pattern Maker could do, but the 14.2 tools are impressive.

  • Pattern Maker or another plug-in for Photoshop CC?

Hello, I know there is no longer patter maker in CC. I used it for creating patterns from existing background in an image. With pattern features in 14.2 I can't reach the same effect. Pattern maker was aware of the edges of the pattern and created good end result. Can anybody give me an advice what to use/do? thanks

What kind of backgrounds are you talking about?
One popular approach is creating a new document from a rectangular or square element and applying the Filter Offset (with something like half the width and height as horizontal and vertical offsets).
This usually makes the borders noticeable (if they are noticeable at all) and one can then touch them up.

  • Bitmap pattern has seam ONLY when created with "Object → Pattern → Make"

I think I've encountered a bug with Adobe Illustrator CC 2014.
I'm trying to make a repeatable pattern out of a bitmap, which I downloaded from http://subtlepatterns.com
Most of the patterns I try, work correctly, but one in particular behaves strangely.
(This is the png in question: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/473648/pw_maze_black.png, Here is an example AI file that shows the problem: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/473648/Pattern%20Seam%20Example.ai)
When I create a pattern with the "Object → Pattern → Make" menu item and then apply it to a shape, I get hairline seams that appear in the pattern at various zoom levels. If I export the file with "Save for Web" to a PNG then the seam disappears, though if I use the plain "Export" feature to create a PNG the seams appear in the output file.
The strange thing is when I create a pattern from the above PNG by dragging it to the Pattern palette and use that pattern, the seams do not appear in any export files, or in the design window of AI.
Other patterns I've tried from subtlepatterns.com work correctly when created with the "Object → Pattern → Make" menu item.
Obviously I have a solution to this problem, but is there an explanation for the difference between creating the patterns with the two methods, or is it a bug?
    Thanks,
    Caleb Land

When dragging the pattern to the swatches panel works, just do it. You don't need the pattern editing mode for this one.

When talking about a specific image posting the image may be useful.
One can use a Layer Mask and add a white Layer underneath.

  • How do I make image backgrounds black and white while maintaining color in the foreground objects?

I have a close up close-up image of an orchid with blurred background.  I am trying to make the background black and white while maintaining the foreground color on the petals, buds and stems.  Any ideas?

Use the Blank & White Brick and either brush the effect onto the background or brush is away from the foreground.  "Detect Edges" will help control the edge of the mask.
You might be interested in knowing that you can brush on/away masks of different strengths, and thus produce effects in between 0% and 100%.
Search the forum -- there are several good posts detailing how to create this effect.

  • How do you make the background of an object transparent in Adobe Illustrator?

    Hello Forum.
How do you make the background of an object transparent in Adobe Illustrator?
I have been having issues with using the Magic Wand tool in Adobe Illustrator as well as the lasso tool.
Basically, I am trying to put a small graphic into a new Illustrator file.
The first thing I tried to do is to use the magic wand tool.  But I found out that this did not work on a jpeg image since it did not have any individual objects to select.
So I tried something new.  I opened the file in Adobe Photoshop and used the lasso tool to select an area.  Then I coped this area.  Then I tried to paste it into Adobe Illustrator.  But the background was not transparent for the pasted image.
How do I make the background transparent.
I made this small video to show what I am talking about:
    http://youtu.be/2LgMGEF6z10

    Don't Copy/Paste the image.
Make it transparent in Photoshop, save a PSD and place it in Illustrator

  • How can I make the background inactive when I show a popup in Windows phone 8.1..?

I have created a popup in Windows phone 8.1. But the user can click buttons in the background. Can I disable this feature of popup...ie. I want the background to be unresponsive when popup is shown.
        How to achieve this....?

There are a couple ways to do this:
If you set popup.IsLightDismissed = true, when the user taps the background, the background will be unresponsive when the user taps the background. HOWEVER, tapping the background will cause the popup to disappear immediately.
When you open your popup, you can set Window.Current.Content.IsHitTestVisible = false, that should make the background untappable. However, you'll need to set .IsHitTestVisible back to true once the popup is closed, otherwise your app will be unresponsive
until the user closes and restarts it. You can subscribe to the popup.Closed event to tell when the popup is closed.

  • Is There a Way to Make the Background App Be Useable?

Hi. Is there a way to make the background useable? For example, you have a fullscreen only app in the background and you want/wanted (which is the correct grammar btw, those who're native speakers and why?) and you have Safari for some tutorial, is there a way to access the background app (for example if it's a drawing app you're learning).
It is possible I guess if the background is/was (which is the correct grammar again btw and why) was resizable.
    Thanks in advance.
    Gbu.

Another way to be able to get to the tutorial in Safari would be to double-click the titlebar of the drawing app's window. Doing that should minimize it, dropping it into the Dock, thus making the Safari window visible. You can bring the drawing back up and front by clicking its icon in the Dock.
I can see a lot of confusion happening if it were possible to have the top window inactive and one in the back of it active. One would have to be really alert as to which window was the active one, to avoid something happening in the wrong place. I'm glad it doesn't work that way.
As far as the drawing app not behaving in accordance with Apple's guidlines re full-screen windows, well, that's on the publisher of the program. Apple publishes developer guidelines for a reason.

  • Please help me install Pattern Maker?

    Hi,
    At this url:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4687&fileID=4377
I am trying to download the plugin:
    CS5_Optional_PlugIns_Installer.dmg
    The files included are:
    CS5 Optional Extension Plug-Ins.mxp
    and
    CS5 Optional Plugins.mxp
When I attempt to install either of these two files, I get the following error message:
I’m attempting to place the installs into the Applications> Photoshop CS5 > Plugins > Optional Plugins
    I'm on a Mac OS 10.6.5
    What am I doing wrong?
Thank you so much in advance.
    Linda

    Hi Linda,
Sorry if I confused, but I just want to make sure that you don't have all the Optional Extensions installed and enabled (as fallout from trying to get Pattern Maker working). There are two .mxp files and you mentioned trying to install both of them. I haven't seen the actual error you get, so to be safe, I'm suggesting that you make sure to disable all the Optional Extensions (and likely all the optional plug-ins that you don't need too). The installers are/were all or nothing (I'm not sure if the installer .mxp for Optional Extensions has been removed yet).
The quickest way to uninstall is using the CS5 Service Manager application (IF it is working correctly). The quickest way to tell if they are installed is probably to look in this folder: Adobe Photoshop CS5/Plug-Ins/Extensions.
There should only be 5 there by default: Enable Async IO, FastCore, MMXCore, MultiProcessor Support, and ScriptingSupport.
Let me know if you still have  questions,
    regards,
    steve

    Hi Linda,
If you installed the Optional Extensions Plug-Ins.mxp you'll want to uninstall all of them (or disable them and only enable individual ones that are needed). To uninstall, use the CS5 Extension Manager. To disable them, individually rename each with a tilde(~) as the first character.
