CS6 PMS Book Colors only as LAB

HI:
I can't get Illustrator to create a swatch with Pantone Book CMYK values: only LAB. All my Color Books arte displaying LAB icons.
If I spec the spot color as CMYK, I get the CMYK equivalent of this LAB value, based on my Color Settings. For example: Pantone 485C with a book value of C0 M100 Y95 K0 dispalays as C10 M96 Y100 K2
I'm working in CMYK color space.
I've set "Use CMYK values from Manufacturer's Books" in spot colors dialogue in swatch panel.
Thanks,
Cam

Theres another thread here thats has some decent similar points...Pantone 295U is off from my pantone book
I just want to add my posts here 'cause I'm on Manwith2shoes side of this and, like him, I don't think this issue is trivial. I was surprised months ago when CS6 was released that there were'nt a zillion posts about this. I think it's like what Kals said in his post:
Here's an example.
I'm creating a 16 page booklet (Web coated SWOP) for AMEX (on befalf of an agency) that requires their artwork to be printed as PMS 288C (specced by AMEX as a Pantone Book Color of C100M67Y0K23). I get $5,000 to design the book and the print job is worth $150,000.
If for whatever reason AMEX isn't happy about the color of the book, I gotta be sure that there's at least no yellow dots on that thing or I'm exposed to liability that is far beyond my pay grade. I can't afford to have Illustrator or InDesign decide for me that a little bit more yellow and a little less black will be just the ticket to match that Pantone.
I have depended on the "Use CMYK value from Pantone's Book" option, the default 'Press Quality' colour conversion setting for exporting PDF artwork from InDesign set to 'preserve numbers' for CMYK colours, and the "Convert Spots to Process" without thinking twice about the outcome. Now I can't afford to just do that. Those "old" CMYK specs aren't just archaic, they're a kinda contractual agreement for me.
Almost every corporate client I work with specs their colors in Pantone. Almost without exception they provide CMYK color guidelines for those Pantone colors that are exactly the same as in the "old" Pantone Color Books.
I may be producing 10 various projects like Direct Mail, Letterhead, Brochure, digital or whatever. Some print as spot. Some print as CMYK. Some are both. Sometimes the same piece is printed both ways. Sometimes they change.
When I set up a Client program in the past, I could spec their Pantones in an Illustrator (InDesign) file and 'presto' the Book mix was there if I needed it. From there I could swing whatever way I wanted without monkeying with different setups or naming conventions (like "My Client's CMYK idea for PMS 288c which is exactly the same as in the Pantone Book"). One Illustrator logo: 10 projects. One InDesign file managed with the Ink Manager and "Preserve Numbers".
Maybe it's just on my end of the world... but my Client's don't give me CMYK specs for all the various press conditions. They just expect their simple Pantone to print at 0 100 95 10, regardless whether 6 97 94 7 gets them closer to the true Pantone color. I think they kinda like that we can lose the 4th plate every once and a while too!
It's just lazy of me, I know... But with every advance of CS: things always get a little more efficient.
Hey Whay!!
This is an old post. It's not an old topic. Most users are deaf I realized after beating the drum a few times. I stopped. "If the dog is asleep. Let 'em sleep!". As far as I am concerned (just me): Pantone is an archaic color system. It has a dictatorial role. I need a color system that is subserviant to my software. i can't spec complements and other harmonies using Hue values and expect to make any sense of them in Pantone. It's stupid! I can't accomplish complex color work this way. I want Adobe to devise it's own proprietary pallette (a simple, logical, flexible one). Then make Pantone or any other Ink House jump to this tune. Just me. Just my letter to Santa Claus.

  • Is there a way to create 'Book Color's with CS Extension Builder?

    Dear all
Is there a way to add a spot color with color mode "Book Color" as those from the swatch libary, the PANTONE color book for example.
I see those Book Colors have fixed Lab Values and cannot be changed. So they would be fixed for the user.
Is there a way to do this?
    thanks

One thought is to do a pre- or post-build action VI that exports all of the revs (like you see in VI props>>revision) for the discrete VI's in the project .  You can set it to increment the rev every time the VI is saved. If the revs are the same you know nothing has changed but if they're different you won't know if the thing that's changed is significant.
Another thought is maybe TortoiseSVN or similar could keep track of what's-changed-and-why for you but I've never use it.
While that would serve the purpose of showing that the source hasn't changed (although I'm not so sure that relying onrev numbers is the best way to go about it - CRC check per file is probably better), it still doesn't gurantee that the build works.
I just think that the whole process probably burns up several thousand dollars worth of unnecessary testing, V&V and paperwork.

  • Book colors with Custom Color Suite

Is there any way to programmatically create a book color? Dragging one from the book to the swatch palette creates a book color, but the Custom Color Suite seems to only have options for four color, three color, and lab color.

In an AICustomColor, there is a variable AICustomColorTag, where you can choose kCustomFourColor (CMYK) , kCustomThreeColor (RGB), or kCustomLabColor (LAB), but there doesn't seem to be any way to tag a color swatch as a Book Color. If you just drag a color from a color book within Illustrator to the swatch list, it is tagged as a book color automatically. At least it is in mine... give it a try. When I create a color swatch programmatically as a lab color or whatever, I can then double click the swatch within Illustrator and change it manually to a Book color.
    Weird.
There's actually a function in the AISwatchLibrariesSuite called FindStandardBookColor, that I'm using to look up a color definition from the color books by name, but it doesn't pull the "Book Color" tag with it, just the CMYK definition.

  • Acrobat Preview mode doesn't show PMS spot colors

Out of the blue, the preview mode in Acrobat 9 is showing PMS spot colors as black, CMYK colors show up fine. The actual pdf itself is fine. This happens when I make pdfs "High Quality" or "Press Quality" from Indesign 6. Curiously, it does not happen when I make a "Smallest File". However when I attach these pdfs to email, the spot colors appear black.
I've been using 9 for a long time and I've been using Indesign 6 for a few months now. I'm on a Mac Pro, OSX 10.6.8. I can't figure out if there is something that was unchecked or checked that is causing this problem to come up seemingly out of nowhere.
    Any advice is much appreciated,
    Thanks!

It was correct for Adobe to use the Lab alternate color space for display of Pantone spot colors. Why? Two reasons:
    (1)     InDesign and Illustrator are now consistent with Photoshop's behaviour with non-process color channels. This interoperability issue has been complained about for years.
    (2)     When one referred to the CMYK alternate color space values of Pantone colors, the question naturally comes up as to which CMYK color space those deviceCMYK values represent. Are those values for SWOP or Gracol or what? According to what Pantone told me personally years ago, they were SWOP, but not so-labelled. Thus, unless your output CMYK color space is SWOP, use of those CMYK colors is simply wrong!!! Using Lab alternate colors will allow whatever renders those spot colors in either RGB or CMYK to properly render them in the actual final color space!
Unfortunately, there is nothing that Adobe can do to cause Apple's preview product to properly display these colors. By the way, this problem also afflicts the built-in PDF viewer in the iOS products as well as MacOS X. Fortunately, under MacOS, you can easily download and install the free Adobe Reader and have it do all the PDF display in lieu of Apple's preview. Although we do have Adobe Reader available for iOS, Apple does not let us replace preview in iOS for PDF preview. You must view in preview and send the file to Adobe Reader.
Of course, if enough Apple users complained to Apple management about the numerous anomalies of its preview program, maybe after all these years, they might actually fix it to properly handle Lab colors (as well as transparency).

  • Color only certain text in TextArea

Hello, I'm making an applet and I'm writing my output to a TextArea. I was wondering if it is possible to color only certain text. I.E. have some text in black and some in red.

  • How to change the background color only for one HTML-Portlet?

    Hi all,
I have created a HTML-Portlet in my root-page. The root page have a style: Main-Style.
I want to change the background-color only for this one HTML-Portlet:

    But this does not work...
When I use the CSS, then it will change the background-color for the root-page too.

    could you try this
    <table bgcolor="#999999">
    <tr>
    <td>
    test
    </td>
    </tr>
    </table>
    I don't think you need <html><header><title>Test</title></header>
    <body></body></html> for your HTML-Portlet.

    Hello Sam,
are you using Universe for your report..if Yes..pls try below option.
Create two objects in the universe
Object1 syntax: current date() (Note:this object you can create at webi level)
    Object 2 syntax:addmonths(sysdate;-2)
Now create a alert in webi report by using below conditions
    Day is less than Object1
    and
    Day is greater than Object2
Please try this and let me know if any issues.

  • Changing colors ONLY

OK, I have the menu done, and now I want to play with the colors of the individual menu Items.
Right now they are Greenish. I have a Paragraph style (and Object styles, calling the Para styles) with Green specified as the color.
What I want to do, is simply go out to all the text frames and change in one click all the green colors to (for example) Blue.
But the formatting changes when I do this so I am not sure what I am doing wrong.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Bob
edited comment added. I think I see what is getting me. In the Changing Colors Paragraph Style, it sets the Font and Point. How do I get a style to just change the color and color only (leaving any formatting untouched)?

If you already have a style applied to this text, the simple thing to do is edit that style to change the color.
You could make a new style based on the other, changing only the color, but it would take longer to apply. Editing an existing style is an instantaneous way to make changes through the whole document in a single operation -- that's one of the big reasons why you use them.

No. The minimum number of pages in an iPhoto 11 book is 20.

  • Why background color only works partially?

    Hi,
I've tried to use "<d_iv class="myclass">" || #columnvalue#|| "</d_iv>" (it's div actually) in the query to make a specific column to be red at the background. Just like this:
    http://tinypic.com/view/?pic=rkx8c4
However, it seems the color only applies partially, not fill the cell completely. Any hints? Thanks.

    Hi Carl and Vikas,
Thanks for the help. However I tried to follow the EXACT way Vikas did but got this kinda output:
    http://i1.tinypic.com/rtqr1l.jpg
The other weird thing was that I have to always manually put
'<d_iv class="foo"> ||#column# ||'</d_iv>' (it's div actually) into the query to make the style works, otherwise there is no effect at all, although I put the marker class to be the CSS class for the specific column.
I am using a customized generic column report template to render different row colors. I am not sure whether that's the reason which caused the problem. The templat uses the value of a column to decide the background color of rows.
Any work around of this? Thanks.

  • Book color in .chm help

Does anyone know if there's a way to change the book color in
.chm help? I see where you can select a custom image. But I don't
want a single image. I want to use the open books, closed books,
and topic icons, just in a different color.

    Hi, Brenwine,
You'd use a graphics editor like Paint or Paint Shop Pro to
set up the icon file as you want it, and then you'd configure your
TOC to use the icons in this file instead of the standard TOC icons
    (see
    "Customize
    HTML Help table of contents").
Before you do much work on this, though, it's worth noting
that Microsoft never properly implemented this feature in HTML
Help, and consequently it is so handicapped as to be barely worth
using. See these articles for more information on the problems and

  • PS CS6 Smartobject - Changing color space not working

If I initially open a smartobject from ACR into PS CS6 using one color space, eg. sRGB, should it then be possible to click back into ACR and change color space to Adobe RGB ???
This is important to me, since working most of the time in sRGB, batch editing lot's of files (for timelapse-video, hence sRGB), but sometimes it may be nessecary to go back and use Adobe RGB to make a best possible print of one of the stills.
This is not working for me. I thought I should be able to do absolutely non-destructive editing when working with smartobjects from ACR, but this may seem to not be the case.
    Ole

I understand now that a copy of the original RAW file is made when working with SO.
Still, when checking what color space I am working in (in PS CS6), after changing from sRGB to aRGB, PS still tells me I am working in sRGB!!
So what I am asking, going back from a SO in PS, into ACR, to change the color space, does not work.
Is there a workaround for this?
Or is it something I still do not understand here?

    Hi there @ChuckHilde
    Welcome to the HP Community
I saw your post about how you cannot print in color, and I would like to refer you to try the steps I previously recommended in another thread. The printer itself prints in color, therefor there is most likely settings on your Mac that need to be changed.
Click here to get to that thread and try the steps: Re: Printer Only Prints Pictures in Black & White
You should be able to print in color after those steps!
