  • NFS drops under heavy load

    Hi everyone,
Here's a new problem I've experienced recently and for which I can't find help anywhere.
I have a grid composed of one Mac Pro server and 8 iMacs workstations, running the SunGrid Engine middleware. The server is sharing a rather large folder via NFS to all nodes in the grid. On some occasions, when I launch a distributed computing task in the grid, every machine gets quite busy exchanging files and crunching numbers, especially the server who gets the additional tasks of scheduling grid jobs, running the NFS daemon and so on, to a point where its 8GB of physical memory get pretty much filled up. And all of a sudden, at apparently random times, the server stops responding to any command and everything crashes.
After a reboot, the system log on the server shows that NFS became unavailable. Here are some excerpts from it:
    Nov 20 08:40:57 medics kernel[0]: nfsd send error 32
    Nov 20 08:41:40 medics kernel[0]: nfsd send error 35
Nov 20 08:41:52 medics kernel[0]: nfs server medics.crulrg.net:/Volumes/2-MEDICS/MEDICS: not responding
Nov 20 08:41:52 medics KernelEventAgent[59]: tid 00000000 type 'nfs', mounted on '/Network/MEDICS', from 'medics.crulrg.net:/Volumes/2-MEDICS/MEDICS', not responding
    Nov 20 09:13:26 medics kernel[0]: nfs_connect: socket error 60 for medics.crulrg.net:/sge6_2u3
    Nov 20 09:13:26 medics kernel[0]: nfs_connect: socket connect aborted for medics.crulrg.net:/sge6_2u3
Nov 20 09:13:26 medics kernel[0]: nfs server medics.crulrg.net:/sge6_2u3: can not connect, error 60
Nov 20 10:04:14 medics /sbin/nfsd[56]: lost UUID for /, was 8E0FAE66-C739-3D34-97EA-159671C915CA, keeping old UUID
    Nov 20 10:04:14 medics /sbin/nfsd[56]: exports:3: path contains non-directory or non-existent components: /Volumes/2-MEDICS/MEDICS
Nov 20 10:04:14 medics /sbin/nfsd[56]: exports:3: no usable directories in export entry
    Nov 20 10:04:14 medics /sbin/nfsd[56]: exports:3: using fallback (marked offline): /Volumes/2-MEDICS
Nov 20 10:05:16 medics /sbin/nfsd[56]: exports:3: export entry OK (previous errors cleared)
    (repeat ad vitam)
While all this appears to point at NFS, I'm wondering if the problem could lie elsewhere, perhaps a faulty disk or a memory leak. I've performed a disk check on /Volumes/2-MEDICS and all appears ok. Additionally, no error occurs under light load, just when the server is very busy.
    My questions:
    - has anyone seen something like this before?
    - how can I troubleshoot this further?
    - if this is not the right place to ask such deep questions, do you know of a more appropriate forum/user group?

Here's a new symptom of the problem:
The last time our system crashed, I was able to peek at the NFS Settings tab of the Server Admin window. What we usually see there is something like:
    Use 8 server threads
The figure 8 is a user-changeable text box, the rest is static text in the interface window. But this time, what I got was this:
    Use 99 server daemons
I don't know if this is any indication of what was really happening under the hood but never before have I seen an interface change its display text like that -- threads and daemons are two very different things are they not? This is the weirdest thing. I took a screen shot but unfortunately can't post it here.
    Anyone seen this before?

  • Airport loses connection to Internet under heavy load

Often, all the computers in my house will lose their Internet connection. However the network stays up just fine. There are both wired and wireless computers. A Netgear 16-port switch handles all the wired machines. The only solution is to pull the power cord from the AEBS and plug it back in. 30 seconds later, everyone's Internet is back up. The AEBS gets its Internet connection via PPoE to our DSL line.
From recent experimentation, I've discovered that this happens a LOT more frequently (at worst, every few minutes) when there is a lot of Internet traffic - many short connections, like when I run web scraping bots. If we go on vacation for 2 weeks, the connection stays up fine.
I know this problem has been discussed before but I've never seen a solution. All Macs and AEBS are on the latest software. Any suggestions?
    - Desperate for AEBS love

I'm experiencing problems with airport connections recently, too. I did a lot of analysing since then.
My configuration is based on a linux-driven NAS connected to two wireless acesspoints (1x SMC Barricade 2804WBR, 1x Fritzfon with recent firmwareupgrades). Two PowerBooks are connected with cable, two use their inbuild aiport cards.
Volumes are mounted from teh NAS via NFS.
Everything worked flawlessly for serveral month until, I assume, to the 10.4.8/10.3.9 update. I'm afraid the net isn't this much loaded that the connection losses were showing up immediately.
But then there was the need to rebuild the iTunes biliothek on the MacBook Pro which uses WLAN (connected to the SMC). For some time the connection worked but then the connection to the server (NAS using NFS) was lost. I tried it with cable an without (10.3.9 and 10.4.8). The same problem occured.
I tried to transfer different kind of files and folders an identified some files which seemed to cause the server losses. Always at the exact same point. But I had to learn that theses points differ whether I connect via the SMC or the Fritzfon. I have to say that the connection via the Fritzfon are somewhat more stable.
Fact is, that if the problem occures the whole network stalls, not only the connection between WLAN accesspoint and the client computer but the connection between cable-connected ones, too.
It's even possible that the server or the SMC becomes unresponsible via telnet so I have to restart it by pressing the reset-button.
I think I'll roll the MacBook Pro back to 10.4.7 and do some extensive testing with only this one active in the net.

  • MSI Z68-GD65 G3 - multiplier drops under heavy load

    Greetings MSI,
I currently have my 2500K overclocked to 4.7Ghz (100 x 47), however when I stress this with Prime95, the multiplier fluctuates between 43 and 44.
I am using N.30 BIOS and have turned off EIST, C1E, Spread Spectrum. I've also turned off all power saving features under ECO as well as under Windows power management.
I'm not sure what is causing this, would be great if I could get some help here so that multiplier sticks to 47 even under load.
Another separate problem, ever since I updated my BIOS from N.1 to N.30, my keyboard can no longer be used outside of Windows, this includes getting into BIOS at boot and O/S selection at boot loader. I am using a Logitech G510 and in the BIOS the option legacy USB is on Auto. I've been using ClickBios for everything.

  • Airport Extreme(SW) keeps dropping the WAN connection under "heavy" load

    Hey,
Have had this problem ever since I got the Airport Extreme when it first came out and I got it.
The problem is this : The connection will work just fine for ages, but if I end up downloading something using (primarily this is the problem) torrents and I end up getting a rather good speed on it the airport will all of the sudden stop getting data from the WAN(ADSL modem connected to it through the WAN connection) and the Airport will have to be restarted. Some days it will have to be restarted up towards 15 times a day.
The Airport remains accessible through the LAN connection, as well as through the WiFi when it has failed like this so I can go in through the Airport Admin Utility and restart the unit without any problems whatsoever. The modem does not need restart or reiniting either.
The problem occurs no matter of if I am on the hard wired (LAN) connection or the WiFi connection. If I download something using a torrent that is high speed, especially if its more then one torrent at the same time (say 4 torrents each running at 200-300kbps therefor peaking at the roof of what my DSL connection can handle) then it will absolutely lock up after a minute or so. If I only do surfing or 'ordinary' work then there is no problem.
    The problem is easily repeated.
    * If I connect my laptop by wire to the modem directly without the airport in between there will be no problem.
    * I have software reseted the Airport many times to attempt to fix the problem when it has gotten on my nerves with no positive or changing result.
    * I have the latest available from Apple firmware(5.6) installed on the Airport.
    * I have no 'weird' or abnormal settings set on the Airport, and no neighbors playing tricks on me - This problem was with me when I used the airport fully locked down in a office environment and then went with it when I moved my airport unit out of my office in to my home.
    * I have no other wifi units in the house that may cause problems, no bluetooth phones running amok.
    Airport details:
    Apple Airport Extreme Base Station
    Firmware Version: 5.6
Wireless Security : Not currently enabled
    Wireless Channel : 1 (automatic)
    Built in modem : No
    Prod # : M8930LL/A (A-1034)

    Hi guys,
Recently I bought AirPort Extreme 802.11n Base Station (Gigabit, MB053LL/A), and
seems, I have very similar problem with yours. Internet connection from my ISP over WAN is dropped after few hours of being idle. The router successfully receives its IP settings from provider's DHCP, eveyithing is working fine at first and as long as I have some inet activity. Then I disconnect, or sleep my laptops, and when I'm back - WAN provides no Internet traffic at all It looks like WAN is not functioning or blocked in someway. AirPort Utility and logs show no problems, all statuses are good, correct WAN IP settings are shown in the utility.
Sometimes it helps to plug-out/in Ethernet cable to WAN port, but more often only full router restart helps (with around 10-20 secs of outage). BTW, WiFi connection between the router and laptops is pretty stable and causes absolutely no probs. HDD connected to the router works good also.
My firmware is 7.2.1 (gigabit), and reading above posts I tried to downgrade to 7.2. It didn't fix the problem So well there are no earlier firmware versions for this AEBS model to try.
Does anybody have ideas about it?
(I understand you guys mostly wrote about 100Mbit version of AEBS)
    Thanks you,
    Strim

  • Do i need a Blackberry SIM (Data plan to get connected)

Hello, i have recently purchased a blackberry playbook 32GB.
    i have below queries.
    1. Do i need to have a BB data plan to get connected..even for the first time or may be later too.
    2. Can a micro SIM with normal 2G or 3G data plan work on it say from AIRTEL or VODAFONE.
    3. I tried connecting my Nokia E6 as a WIFI hotspot (using JOKU) , but playbook does not detect so..however it detects all other WIFI spots say from SAMSUNG phone.
    4. Finaly i got connected with WIFI hotspot provided by SAMSUNG phone and was able to register. But that may not be always available with me. Thats where my second/third  question is important.
    5. After getting connected as in point 4, software upgrade was in process which was interupted owing to low internet speed. (being EDGE n/w). i am sure after S/W update i shall be able to use it for other purpose.
    6. Even if i get a BLACKberry data plan micro SIM, will it work on NON BB smart phones?
    7. I am new to BLACKBERRY, please help me.

My first guess is that you bought a former Sprint (US) Playbook, which might not be operable in India.
I just don't know. You might try to return it to your eBay seller and get your money back and purchase a known working device.
    Does it connect to WiFi?

  • Can I use Apple TV with unlimited data plan for my IPad without any other internet connection?

I Live in a weird area with no hardwired internet connection.
My only internet connection is my iPad Air's UNLIMITED DATA plan from AT&T... It's LTE and it works great for my usual work.
i Want to cancel stupid Direct TV acct and use Apple TV instead...
IS it possible to subscribe a TV account online by using my ipad air's unlimited data plan and watch in on my TV via Apple TV without  using any other type of home network account?

If you intend to use your iPads data plan then that will require use of the tethering/hot spot feature. As I said, you will not be able to use airplay, that needs a wifi LAN (home  network). This may change with IOS 8, but won't know for sure until the release.

  • Data plan used if MiFi connected but not actively being used?

If computer is on overnight but not in use, meaning MiFi connected, with that use up my data plan? Or does it use up with "active" use only? I'm sharing internet with other people so I'm not sure my data plan is being used on purpose or just getting eaten up while we are all asleep? I'm already maxed with 3 weeks to go!!!

As long as you have devices connected to the MiFi there is always a risk that those devices will consume data behind the scenes without your knowledge.  This is how network connected devices work, they are constantly "in use" while connected.  Computers, smart phones and any kind of internet connected devices are constantly backing up content, looking for updates and talking to other network devices.  It has nothing to do with your active participation and all internet communication is held against you on your data plan.
The only way to completely stop data usage is to turn off your MiFi when it is not needed.  This is a common safe practice that you should start using when on a metered data plan.  MiFis are not intended to be left on 24x7 anyways, frequent reboots will help ensure the device stays in proper working order and increase the longevity of its life.
Verizon does provide everyone with a data log.  The data log will provide you with time stamps and the amounts that are consumed at those times.  It should be easy to see when your biggest spikes of consumption are.  Isolate what devices are online during those times and what may have been going on and you can start to build a picture of where the problem lies.
To truly see the network traffic in terms of specific applications, web services or devices you need to find and install network monitors.  Network monitors come in a variety of applications so you need to find and build a monitoring system that fits your environment.  Considering you have other people connected to your MiFi it would not be uncommon for each of you to install a separate monitor specific to those machines.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Record about my phone (bought in Verizon store and connected to Verizon for 4 years) has been corrupted and now I can not make any changes to my data plan. Several sessions with the technical support and management have not resolved this issue. Each time technical people and top managers promised that this issue will be resolve tomorrow and they will cal me. Nothing happend!! I can not even cancel my service not just to upgrade it. Completely locked.
    Any advice?
    Thanks.
    Alex.

Cannot figure out what your talking about since it makes no sense.
If you are the account owner you can go to the My Verizon web portal http://www.verizonwireless.com
You must log in with your cell number and your my Verizon portal password. Not the account pin.
Once there you can change your plan and services. However repeated incorrect login attempts will lock you out of the site. It a fraud prevention measure.
1-800-922-0204 call support with your cell number and or account number and account pin and they can assist you.
If you don't have the information then there is nothing they can do.
If you can verify who you are they may be able to reset your account access. But only if you are the account owner.
    Good Luck

  • HT4061 does an iPAD have to have a MEID to connect to data plan? I have a 3g but no MEID #, it has the IMEI # -  have i purchased a screwed up ipad????

I just purchased an iPad2, with wi-fi and 3g. I bought this for my mom and was going to connect it to my data plan. However, my carrier said I need a MEID number to connect to the data plan. My device doesn't have a MEID number, it has an IMEI number. What is going on with this? Did I buy a screwed up iPad? I purchased it from a company that my company does business with, and payments are deducted automatically from our pay.

If your carrier is asking for an MEID, I suppose you are on Verizon? You may have purchased a GSM only iPad. See this thread for someone who had the same issue.

I can not send email from my iPad .  Have been using it for over a year, all of a sudden I can only receive email.  I have a wifi connection in my home and have a A T &T cellular data plan?

I have a 1st gen iPhone that I just updated the software to 2.0.2
Now whenever I press the mail icon it goes to the mail app for about 4 seconds, does nothing, no loading of folders, old messages, nothing.
Then it reverts back to the home screen. Tried restarting, haven't tried restoring, thought I'd look here first.
    Anyone???

Hi. I have an iPhone 4 with iOS7 and no data plan. When I am not connect to wifi I don't receive iMessages, but then when I do connect to wifi I get the messages telling me they were sent earlier.  Is there any thing I can do to fix it?  I don't remember how long this has been happening but it is very frustrating. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!!!

If you don't have a cellular data plan, then why are you expecting that you will have an active internet connection unless you are connected to wi-fi?
iMessages require either wi-fi or a cellular data connection.

  • How can I connect to the internet on my ipad without a 3G data plan?

Is there any other way to connect to the internet without a 3G data plan? I have an internet router at home from verizon, can that connect my ipad to the internet or do i still need the 3G data plan? Can u please help me?

The iPad can connect to wireless networks. So if your router is capable of broadcasting its internet connection wirelessly (so that you can access it from say a laptop) then you can go to the settings and choose wifi to connect to the router. If not you can turn on internet sharing on your computer if you have a pc or mac. This will share your connection wirelessly so that you can connect your iPad to the internet.
