  • CSS in CS3

Hi, I'm feeling a little , no really stupid right now. I've
been using CS3 for about a month. Last week the css styles stopped
    being applied.
I am definitely at the 'novice' level.
When I apply a style, the property inspector indicates the
style is applied but it is not The "all" under the css styles shows
the style, when I go to "Current" it gives me 'no css property
    apply to current selection"
What have I done to cause this.
I've tried starting a new document, attaching a style sheet,
deleting the sheet, starting new styles and getting myself totally
    confused.

VIEW | Style Rendering > Display Styles (is this enabled?)
Can you show us a page where you are seeing this effect, and
    please tell us
what rule you are trying to apply and where you are trying to
    apply it?

  • Tags in CS3 not displaying correctly

I have pages that displayed correctly in Dreamweaver CS2. In
CS3, the design view is not displaying properly.
For example, if the tag is this: <p class="Body">,
design view is not showing the page properly. If I reapply the CSS
    style, CS3 inserts this: <p spry:hover="Body" class="Body">,
    and the page displays properly.
Please tell me how to NOT use Spry and still get my pages to
display correctly in design view. Thanks.

  • Using CS4 in a CS3 Training Course?

I've just acquired DW CS4. I have website experience, but none with DW. Our local tech school is offering a course in DW, but it's based on CS3 and that's the software we'll be using in class. I asked about potential training problems, but the registration office couldn't help and the instructor has not responded. Registration deadline is fast approaching...
For those familiar with both versions, do you think a DW newbie could beneift from such a course? Be totally lost? Not worth the time/cost?
    Thanks for any feedback.

It depends what you hope to get out of the course - and the quality of the instructor.
Dreamweaver CS4 has added new features, such as Live View, Related Files, and the Code Navigator. It also has two modes for the Property inspector: HTML and CSS, whereas CS3 has a single mode.
I teach Dreamweaver at an authorized training centre in London (Highlander), and was very frustrated having to continue teaching on CS3 for the first three months after the release of CS4. My frustration was based on the fact that I think CS4 is so much better. However, earlier this year, I was asked to teach a course on Dreamweaver MX, which is about seven years old. In many ways, I was pleasantly surprised, because there is a great deal of continuity in Dreamweaver. Although I missed the features that I now use on a daily basis, the older version was reassuringly familiar.
The real issue is the quality and skill of the instructor. To get the most out of Dreamweaver, you need a solid understanding of HTML and CSS. If the instructor simply goes through the motions of teaching you what the various bits and pieces of Dreamweaver do, it will be a waste of time. It will also be a waste of time if the course teaches you old-fashioned techniques, such as table-based layout, and using "layers" (AP Divs) for layout. The difference in versions of Dreamweaver, in short, is the least of your concerns.

  • CS3 Extended trial when CS3 installed

I am wanting to trial CS3 extended on a system which already has CS3 installed. When I download the trial it does not attempt to install CS3 extended as a separate application but merely "repairs" the existing CS3 installation and does not give me an opportunity to trial CS3 extended!
How can I get CS3 extended trial to install as an additional but entirely seperate application?
To add a further complication the system is a windows 64bit. The current cs3 is installed but does not take advantage of 64 bit features and installs as a 32 bit application in C:\Program Files(86). I understand CS3 extended is meant to take advantage of 64 bit so clearly a seperate install into C:\Program Files is needed. The whole purpose of the trial is to see how well CS3 extended takes advantage of the Windows 64 bit OS.
Naturally I do not want the existing CS3 installation to be changed or in any way compromised by the trial.
    Thanks in advance for info

I registered here on the Adobe site in 2000 or the year before but my contacts with Adobe and a few of their old hands go back long before then.
I agree with your "flying F" comment and deeply regret the loss of direct contact with and responsiveness of the pre-"contracted out support" days. I agree that the "old engineers" appear to have been deterred from posting but IMHO that had little to do with Bobs analysis about negative comments by users when the forums got going. The pressure on the engineers not to contribute appeared to have more to do with their honesty and tendency not to contradict users who voiced legitimate grievances. This was not welcomed by management who seemed to me to have morphed the organisation from a user responsive outfit to a much more bunkered view of the world. To me the turning point came after the blistering Adobe received when, in the eyes of many users, they failed to respond quickly and efficiently to the introduction of firewire.
Since then response has IMHO gone down hill to the extent that they the response to legitimate user complaints is pretty poor. The way they responded over the misleading information about the differences between PS CSs and CS3 extended is a case in point. Most organisations would have at a minimum said OK if you are going to spend some more money with us then we will be v. happy to upgrade you from CS3 to CS3 extended rather say you have to pay full price for the extended version on top of paying for CS3. This is therefore a reasoned objection to what to me appears to be a grossly insensive way of dealing with a legitimate enquiry.
There are those hear who say it is not worth commenting here because only users hear what is being said.
I do not agree.. I understand the discussions here are carefully read by a team at Adobe HQ .. attention is only paid when enough voices speak with sufficient reason and clarity. So IMHO we should speak up responsibly here with the expectation that what we say will be listened to even when the listening is not publicly acknowledged!!
I also agree that plain ******** is destructive and should be discouraged.
There needs to be a clear understanding that as users we need Adobe's products and those of us who are long established users wish Adobe well. On the other hand Adobe do have a responsibility to be responsive to us and to clearly expressed reasonable needs.
I also believe there are those whose primary role here is to damp down expectations that what is said here may have an impact there. IMHO the PR should not be believed.

  • Dreamweaver CS3 quits unexpectedly

    Hello,
I've been using Dreamweaver CS3 on Windows Vista, and no
problems until I made some external css to my web page. Now every
time I open my page to edit or any other page that has this css
Dreamweaver CS3 hangs with a dialog like this:
Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 has stopped working
Windows is collecting more information about the problem.
    This might take several minutes...
I tested this page on several different systems and always
get this error. Seems to be a bug with DW CS3.
    I guess I can call it killer.css
I will attach the code (sorry, it's quite big) so you can see
it for yourself... really disturbing that a CSS code can crash the
    DW CS3.
    David

Nevermind.... I rewrote the code an it's not hanging anymore.
It seems there was a 'hidden' character on the css code... strange.

  • Design view in DreamWeaver CS3 disabled for CSS & Java

I currently use Adobe Dreamweaver CS3, and only some files have the option to view them in code AND in design view. This works for most files (HTML, PHP, etc). However, anytime I create a new CSS or Java file, the design view is disabled:
I have already tried the two other solutions I've found in this forum.
First I tried Preferences > File Types / Editors, and I deleted all of the file types in the "Open in Code View" menu (pictured below).
I restarted DW, and it didn't work.
Then I tried several steps to re-create the Configuration folder (which it did, but the problem remained) listed here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/401/kb401118.html.
Still nothing. HTML, PHP, ASP and all other files have the Design View and Split View available, but CSS and Java do not. I would really like to use DW to start editing CSS, but do not know it well enough to write in code and therefore could really use that handy Design View so I can learn as I tweak it.
Any help much appreciated - thanks!

HTML, PHP, ASP and all other files have the Design View and Split View available, but CSS and Java do not.
That's correct. That's as it should be.
A CSS file contains a bunch of text only CSS rules. Javascript is text-only script. There's no layout to see for CSS and JS files in Design and Split View so they're disabled.
Files with layout e.g. .htm, .php have Design View because they're web pages with a layout which can be viewed.
I would really like to use DW to start editing CSS, but do not know it well enough to write in code and therefore could really use that handy Design View so I can learn as I tweak it.
Open any .htm or .php (or other) web page and its associated CSS file.
Then tweak the CSS either via Code View in the CSS file, or using the DW CSS Editor when viewing the .htm/.php file, and see the formatting changes applied in Design View in the .htm (or .php) file.
Do not rely on DW's Design View as an absolute reference for pixel perfect accuracy. It will always be an approximation only to assist visually oriented web designers while editing.
Always test all CSS rules and edits in a range of browsers. Browser support for CSS rules and effects varies. Not all browsers support everything on offer in CSS1, CSS2 and CSS3.

  • CSS not showing fully in DW CS3

I recently installed DW CS3 on XP and realized that some of
my <div> tags with CSS backgrounds are not displaying in
design view, however, are doing fine in DW 8. Has anyone
experienced anything similar? I certainly want to use DW CS3 for
the updated CSS management panel however am having second thoughts
    if this is a bug.

Show us. No doubt, CS3's rendering is more accurate than
    DW8's, meaning
that you have a div collapse because you are not clearing a
    float, or
    something.

lol that isn't my problem... sadly... it won't show the applied styles such as color and font-family... it defaults EVERYTHING and nothing can be altered in the code... I want to know how to see the applied styles in the design and the split... but even with the proper coding it still doesn't show my webpage properly.

    Hi
DW CS3 did not have the 'related files' feature, (introduced in CS4) this means that design view will not show the actual html pages when the css page is open. One possible solution is to actually open both pages using a vertical or horizontal 'stacking' of the open items, (select, Window - Tile Vertically/Horizontally, (select as required)).

  • Difficulties with templates and CSS in DW CS3

I'm having difficulty with CS3 and templates.
I started a new site. I created an HTML file (with CSS for
some formatting - colors and margins) and made a template from the
HTML file, creating one editable region (plus the default two of
the page title and the additional area in the header). I then
created my site HTML files from this new template. When I tried
updating the template, I got an error that I had nested editable
regions in the HTML files. I checked the template, and I don't. I
checked the HTML files and I did see two </body> tags at the
    end.
I started over. I updated my starting file and made a new
template, overwriting my old one. I created new files from the new
template. Although the HTML files display fine in the browsers,
when I try to view them in Design View, this round DW doesn't
render them with the CSS, and it did the first time.
What's going on, and can I get it to stop?
    Thanks!

I use File>New...>Page from Template, select the
template, go to editable region, add my content, then save the
result as an HTML file. Same as I've done lots of times. The Update
page when template changes checkbox is checked.

  • DW CS3: Template & CSS Rules problems

Dreamweaver CS3 Templates and CSS Rules.
I've built a basic html page with a header, navigation links and main content area, then saved this as a template with the content area as the edit region.
When I create new html pages from this template I want to insert Divs in the edit region for each new page, which I can successfully do, but for some reason Dreamweaver is not allowing me to create new CSS Rules for each new Div? So I'm not able to control position, text layout, colours etc for the new content. So my question is how do I do this?
I got around this with the current website by creating the template with virtually all of the content for the entire website firstly, then deleting as necessary for each page, which I know is the wrong way to build html site pages from a template!
I wonder if someone could please point me in the right direction to get me back on track? Any pointers would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, there is a meta tag at the start of the CSS rules. Here's a copy and paste of the code generated in DW CS3. Template was created from a html doc...

  • DW CS3 and DW CS3 with CSS

Hello and thanks in advance for your input. Years ago I
taught myself GoLive and am now making the change to Dreamweaver
CS3. I purchased it before CS4 was released so will have to upgrade
later. My question is this: I signed up for the Lynda.com online
classes to learn CS3 and notice that there are two different
tutorial categories, CS3 dated 4-07 and CS3 with CSS dated 3-08.
Are these two different programs? I purchased the design premium
suite and it lists Dreamweaver as CS3 and does not mention "with
CSS" in the title. I am not sure which tutorial program to use to
begin building my website and because it's Sunday they are not open
today. I am anxious to get started today, so would greatly
appreciate your insight. Thanks very much.

    Thanks for your reply.
Yes, they are two different tutorials and from what you
mention, I am assuming that the more recent tutorial simply focuses
on utilizing CSS to build the site more effectively than what is
probably taught with the first tutorial. From what you said, it
seems like I should first take the CSS tutorial to get the
foundation of my site as uniform as possible and then perhaps go
back and study the basic DW CS3 tutorial to help fill in the gaps.
The reason why I am making such a big deal with asking is
because I know the laying of the foundation on a site going in is
so important. Each tutorial is about 11 hours, so I just wanted to
spend my time efficiently. Thanks for the suggestion of going the
    CSS route first.

  • Linked CSS not visible in CS3

When working in split or design mode, any linked css styles
do not seem to be applied to my document. I can preview the file
and view it with the linked CSS working, but that's really
annoying. Anyone else having this problem? Is there an easy fix I
    am missing?
    Thanks.

    Hi guys,
Everything I'm working on is local on my computer. the

It is linked in my header as follows:
    <link href="backend.css" rel="stylesheet"

Nothing special about it. If I preview it in Safari, Opera,
Firefox, and IE it looks fine. In DW, if I use styles in the head
tags it shows up fine. If I link a stylesheet, it doesn't show up.

  • CS3 ie6 css riddle, vertical menu

    Hello all,
I made a site about 12-18 months ago in CS3, and have
recently come back to it to add some extra items.
    http://www.samenscheiden.info
I changed one or two simple things in the site CSS (left and
top values for one div, and a couple of extra classes) and tested.
All seemed fine in Safari and Firefox, but when I look at it
in IE6 (Win XP, VMware on a Mac) I see some strange things.
3 menu items are underlined (Alles in een, kosten, leesvoer)
Submenus voor "Alles in een" and "Voorstellen" have a border.
Some submeu items are underlined (eg "Alles in een" -
    "Mediator") and others aren't.
The submens get a white background colour by mouseover in IE
    (not what I want).
I can't find where these inconsistencies are coming from, so
if someone could find the time to look at it for me I'd appreciate
    it.
I think the underlined menu items (not submenu items) may
have to do with a link to "#", or a recursive link (eg the FAQ link
    on this page -
    http://www.samenscheiden.info/faq.html),
but that's as far as I've got.
    The site CSS file here:

    The Spry files are here:
    http://www.samenscheiden.info/SpryAssets/SpryMenuBar.js

Thanks in advance for any help, this is driving me
    mental!

Flyout Menus require JavaScript and some IE specific CSS code to work right.  You'll find a good cross-browser flyout menu below.  Just copy and paste their code into a new HTML document and style it the way you wish.

  • CSS Code Hints in CS3

I'm new to DW (CS3). I'm making an external CSS and when I
press return to get a new line I get a code hint that pops up to
select which attribute I might want next. I find if I click on an
item in the list it is not entered for me.
If I use the arrow keys and press return/enter it accepts it
    an enters it for me.
Is this how it is supposed to work? That seems like an error
    to me.

As you type the hint zeros in on the rule that you want (or
    you can use the
up and down keyboard arrows to select the rule that you want)
    Once the
desired rule is highlighted pressing the Enter key on your
    keyboard will
place the rule in your stylesheet.
