CSS Questions :: Renaming Class Styles & Replacing Styles Globally

1) Renaming Class Styles
I have a large website that I redesigned over a year ago and now manage. I've been doing some housekeeping and attempting to rename some of the class styles I've applied to different parts of each page.
Problem: When I change the name of a class style, the style no longer is applied to the text. I've tried this in both GoLive CS2 (8.01) and Dreamweaver CS3. It's the same with both. They both allow you to change the name, but then the text loses the connection to the class style.
How can I rename the property (or style rule) without losing the connection to the text it is applied to? To go through and have to reassign the newly named styles to each section of each page would be an enormous undertaking.
2) Replacing Styles Globally
Is there an easy way to delete a style and chose a new one to take it's place globally?

For some reason when I do this it breaks the formatting style.

This does make sense.

Efficient Replace Style needed

Last April I asked if anyone knew how simply to replace a graphic style in AI. Up to now I have no real answer except that which Scott Falkner kindly suggested (below). I take it that there is not easy way to do this, perhaps for technical reasons but maybe because it's an oversight. Thanks for trying to provide a simple way to do this rather than making the user use a round about way.

Unlock and show all layers and objects. Create a new global colour swatch, then redefine the style to use that swatch as a fill or stoke. Select an instance of the stye then use Select > Same > Fill Color or > Stroke Color to select all uses of that colour. You should now have all instances of the style selected. Apply the style you want. Sun the action Delete unused palette items and the now unused style should go away.
Untested.

This may be posted in the wrong thread by perhaps this answer will help, yanwell. It appears you are editing the bounding box and not the object within it. Here is what I suggest.
Illustrator has a marvelous Layer/Object window. It's simply called 'Layer,' but as someone kindly pointed out to me some time ago, 'objects' are stored either under a Layer or Sublayer. This is crucial for understanding Illustrator since this allows you to easily choose a layer or an object in order to edit it or even apply a style. Styles can become very confusing here so watch out. This is covered elsewhere on the forum.
I believe you should bring up your Layer window and find the layer on which the object you want to edit is (you can open all main layers by Option and clicking a closed layer to open all layers). *However* this will not open layers and objects under this main layer. You must expand the main layer and sublayers to get to the objects. Once there then use the little 'selection circle' on the right (the 'target' circle is the correct name I believe). If grouped then you have to open that group manually (all of this 'opening' is very tedious sometimes; I wish Adobe would make this easier). You will note that there the object and its bounding box are under this group. If you choose the object (rather than the bounding box) you should be able to proceed with your editing. Remember, once you get used to using the 'target' option in the Layer window you will greatly improve your efficiency in editing complex docs.
What I don't understand is why Adobe doesn't make all of this clear somewhere (like in Help) but leaves it up to us poor users to figure it out. It caused me great frustration when I moved from Freehand to Illustrator. It may be buried in some tutorial.

CSS question - complete Novice

i know some of you people must dispair at novice questions
but we all need to start somewhere don't we. i have had dreamweaver
for 18 months and have hardly used it but now i am starting to
learn. basically my problem is this...and i bet it's an old
chesnut.
i have two different places on my website that have links,
one with a green background, that on hover turns white.... thats in
the settings. thing is i want an email link thats on a white
background in the same page, i have tried different colurs but it
just doesn't look right.
could anyone tell me in simple terms what i need to add to
either the CSS file or change something in settings that allow me
to do this.

CS3 Spry css question

I know basic tableless css, my question is instead of a regular navigation bar I need to use the spry widget for a dropdown navigation bar on an exisitng html page. I'm able to insert the spry in the correct spot on the .html page and get it to work but I have a css sheet already attached to the page I need to know if I can just select all the css from the spry css page and insert it inside my attached css page?
Any help?

Yes, you can move the styles, but in my opinion, it is safer to maintain the Spry CSS assets in their own file, safe from inadvertent deletion or harm. There is an inherent logic to the order of styles in the Spry CSS sheets, and you might lose the wisdom of the comments not to mention the orderly consistency as well.
You may link many style sheets to your .html pages...you are not limited to one per page.
By using several CSS files attached to one page, you can also have a separate style sheet for different media: one for the Screen, one for Print, one for a Handheld device. There's no reasonable way to keep all these varying uses for different style sheets all one ONE sheet. The Printer will look for your main style sheet AND at the overriding styles in the print style sheet, for instance, so you don't need to print the nav bar when what you want is a print of the content.

You do, of course, need to NAME the CSS files with distinct names, for instance, global.css, print.css, handheld.css.

CheckboxDatagrid (extended) CSS question

Hello
In our application we make use of the CheckBoxDataGrid, which rocks.
We are playing with the CSS and noticed that we arent able to change the "chromeColor" property, in CSS. Only in the MXML.
I would like to set the style in the CheckBoxDataGrid super class, but I do not see a way to specify "headerStyleName".
How and where would that occur in an extended class? Would it need to happen in the constructor?
Also, how would you re-assign the CSS, in ActionScript, in this extended DataGrid class? Any ideas?

What can one use to replace many globals currently being used in an app with out affecting operation?

I have been tasked to maintain/upgrade/update/change, what ever, code left behind by a previous programmer. The previous programmer LOVED globals. I don't necessarily hate them but limit their use when I code.
The problem is that the old code was compiled in LV 5.1 and I am trying to port everything to LV6.1. LV6.1 doesn't like to see more than 500 globals or nodes. The globals used by the previous programmer are very large.
I need to find a way of replacing these global with some method which one could, perhaps, call each value by name like globals do but to limit the number of nodes. This way I could compile in LV6.1 and make other upgrades without having to depe
nd on globals.

But,
In theory you may be able to develop a variation on what he describes in this posting. It takes advantage of the properties of re-entrant and non-re-entrant VI's to re-use LV2 style globals as distinct intances.

Silver style other style subVI

When I create a control for a subVI it will always use the style used in the subVI. I want to create all my controls in Silver style, but now I am stuck between part silver style and part modern style. Is there a way to bypass the style of the subVI? If not, is there a way to create literally any control without using right-click create control on the subVI?
PS. the last question is my problem mainly with DAQmx VI's. I don't know how to make a physical channel of the exact right type, for instance one that only recognises counters. If I create a physical channel in Silver style in the front panel, I will only be able to select analog inputs, regardless of whether I am connecting to a counter physical channel, analog output or analog input.
I am using Labview 14.01 (64-bit)

Thanks for the reply. altenbach underston the first question. The subVI's style determines the style of the control you make, the built in functions of LabView do follow what you're stating. Indeed, replacing is an option which I don't mind too much, but I want people who use and adapt the code after me to not have to go through such a tedious and indirect process. I would like to find a way to bypass this feature where controls are automatically in the subVI's style.
An I/O Channel is the same, regardless of the Style of the Control. The value will differ depending on whether the device is Analog or Digital, Input or Output, but you should be able to put a Silver Physical Channel Control on your Front Panel and wire it to any DAQmx function (in the upper left corner, of course). Just "adjust" the content of the Control as appropriate.
I'm afraid you misunderstood my question. I am unable too choose anything else but analog inputs when I connect the physical I/O channel to any "Create Virtual Channel", whether it's a counter, analog output or analog input. The options I can select are limited only to the inputs that actually fit the channel (if I use modern controls), and in the Silver case where I make a physical channel on the front panel I am limited only to the analog output. Indeed, I can make modern controls, select the input I want, convert them to Silver controls and it works. However, I am then unable to change the physical channel without first changing back to modern and selecting the channel I want (for instance I cannot change my counter from Dev1/ctr1 to Dev1/ctr0 without doing this).
I am using Labview 14.01 (64-bit) Why? Do you really need the Address Space, and are you willing to give up the relative lack of 64-bit LabVIEW drivers and other support? Most of us run LabVIEW 32-bit on Windows 64-bit
I have no real reason to run the 64-bit version of LabView. The computer I am using now is not a research computer (just my office computer with an old DAQ board), I'll be sure to think about this regarding the choice of LabView version on the lab computer. Judging from the national instruments link I found it's probably better if I keep to the 32-bit version in the end.

Boilerplate.css questions

Why are we not to tamper with the Boilerplate.css?
I understand the reasoning as far as breaking page structure goes, but the file also has css styles for the likes of 'a href' colours and text decoration. Is this really necessary because it doesn't do anything for structure, but it is for some reason overriding my declared styles for a href and this is forcing me to have to write more code to compound styles to specific areas just to get text-based links to display how I want them to. I have boilerplate.css imported before any other imported style sheet, so things like a href should be overridden shouldn't they.
The declared styles for a href are almost the same as the default colours of web links anyway, so I don't understand why they are in the boilerplate.css... can anybody tell me what's the harm of changing these kind of structureless tags?

You are at liberty to modify the boilerplate css file as you wish.
The reason it is not recommended to do so, is because browsers do not all have the same css defaults, and boilerplate is coded so for just this reason, (to give all browsers the same default settings).
So, if you know what you are doing, then modify as you see fit, just be aware of what you modify, and ensure you test in all browsers and on all types of device before deploying your site.

Have a CSS question

I have a picture i am trying to put inside a div that has a class already which makes pictures have a frame around them when i insert them into it, which is fine for the main image but i am trying to add an extra image in there and i dont want that frame to be there.
I will attach a picture and a link to the site i am talking about.
If anyone can help me with this CSS question or how i can go about getting rid of the frame around the step 1, step 2 and step 3.

Paragraph style - next style

Hi!
I have a question about paragraph-styles.
For designing a book I receive a lot of unformatted text from different people. Now, of cause I need styles for different cases. One of those is a question-answer-style (interview -> see image below). You normaly can create a paragraph-style with the option to have, after pushing RETURN, another style (I think in english it has to be „use next style“). Okay, my problem is it works ONLY when I start typing the text word by word in Indesign an push RETURN and going on typing... That´s not what I want. My idea was, to copy an paste the whole text from Word (or from wherever) to Indesign and give´em the style it needs.
Doesn´t it work somehow? With „nested styles“ it works neither. You can only make a „soft break“ to use next style. So I must insert it one by one after each paragraph. Not so ...

When you select several paragraphs you can go to first paraagraph style in the pargraph style panel and choose with the right mouse click in the context menu:

When you apply such an objects style to a text frame or to a cell of a table all text is formated according the first paragraph style choosen in the object style or cell style and the following paragraphs are styled as defined in next paragraph,

How do I make a style specification /style apply to just a single region?

I have an HTML design that I am copying from an external website, and it is in the form of a <style>style</style> specification.
When I put it in the HTML header of the page it makes my tabs and other buttons look funny.
I want to make this style apply to one region only.
How can I do this?

Hello,
It sounds like you having css conflicts between the two different style sets, which can be expected when your trying to clone a site UI by just shoving code in the page.
Try this add two regions set to No Template surrounding the region you want to style. In the one before the the region you want to style add <div id="cloneme"> and in the one after put </div>
In the style declaration of the site your trying to clone put #clone in front of all the style declarations. That probably won't fix everything but it should keep the page in total from changing.
Take a second to read through this page http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_syntax.asp 15 min will save you hours in the long run.

2 CSS Questions on my layout

Hi everyone, I have two CSS questions regarding my layout.

My first question is about how I can keep the right top image
from being bumped down to the next line when the window is resized.
I want it to squeeze into some, but then at a point have the scroll
bars kick in.
My other question is how I could make the title image "The
Scott Report" centered between the two left and right images up
top.

I copy text, paragraph styles, character styles & images from 1 document to another only text copies

I have a few documents that have text and images that is frequently repeated through many chapters of an In Design book. (Printing, exporting etc.) I used to select all in the source document, Command + C to copy it, change to the target document, Command + V to paste it. It worked well for six months.
About two weeks ago it stopped working (shortly after an update to In Design). I have text, paragraph styles, chacter styles and images in each document. Only the plain text copies over. This is the same for any document.
I haven't changed Preferences in six months.
I'm on a Mac 10.8.2, In Design CS6 version 8.0.1.
It's driving me crazy! It's a lot of work to reformat each 2 to 10 pages after copying it in.

Question about Classes

I have a question concerning classes. In my main program I have a list box. I have gotten the index (using getSelectedIdex method) from the list box to use with my array. What I want to do is match the list box index with the array index to get the correct price from the array. I can do this in the main class, but was wondering if I could just do the calculations in another class. Can I pass the index of the list box to another class in order to do the calculations? I figure I could put the array in the other class too and match them. In order to do this, what would the class data member look like for the list box index that I have passed? I have tried and get errors, so was wondering if there was another way I can do this

2. the main method class has become large and cumbersome making it difficult to find all the methods.
3. There are a variety of methods and subroutines in your application so that the logic in your program will be improved in terms of readability and future maintenance by creating seperate class files.

Sooner or later the would-be java programmer has to change or make the transition from using java as a procedural language and develop programs along more OOP lines. The answer to your question is "yes of course you can do this" and simply from the point of view of learning how to pass an argument to a different class, then yeah, learn how to do this.

Hi,
Most of the time error occurs on Windows plateform.
The main reason behind this is nesting of the directories.
Also the long directory names causes this problem.
Thus try to keep the directory name small and the try to nest the directories to store the jsp's
I have faced same problem when i used to work on Tomcat. But this problem is never occurd on Resin.
