CSS software upgrade failed

Hi everyone,
My customer had a problem during upgrading CSS software from 7.50.303 to 8.10.602.
He executed upgrade but it was failed with the following message.
==========
CSS# upgrade "sg0810602.adi-gz"
CSS#
Current Version: sg0750303 OFFICIAL
*** You must remove an installed version to upgrade. ***
Cannot delete enough installed versions to allow the upgrade.
One cannot delete an image that is the currently running image,
or an image that is selected as the primary or secondary boot
image.  You must de-select the primary or secondary image
in order to continue with this upgrade.
==========
There is no another information on the CSS but I have just the above message.
Have you experienced similar symptom? or Do you have any information why this is happened and/or how can resolve this problem?
Your information would be appreciated.
Best regards,
Shinichi

Hi Shinichi,
Can you please share the commands you have run for upgrading the CSS software.
Kindly tell how many versions are already installed on you CSS.
Use the version command to see the currently running software  version.
To
a. List the  ADIs on the CSS.
(config)# show installed-software
sg0720104
sg0730003
b. Access  boot mode:
(config)# boot
(config-boot)#
c. Use the remove command to remove the ADI.
(config-boot)# remove sg0720104
If you are having two software version installed.
Kindly send me the output of the
(config)# show installed-software
Before you can upgrade your CSS, make sure you have enough space on the box to
complete the upgrade.
Because a hard-disk-based CSS can contain a maximum of four ArrowPoint Distribution
Images (ADIs). A Flash disk-based CSS (CSS 11150 or CSS 11800) can contain a
maximum of two ADIs. If the limit has been reached, you must remove one ADI
version before you can add a new version.
====================================
Before you can upgrade your CSS, you must copy the new CSS software to your FTP  server and configure an FTP server record so the CSS recognizes the server. Use  the show installed-software version-limit command to display  the maximum number of installed versions allowed on your hard disk or Flash  disk.
When upgrading the CSS software, you can use the upgrade  script or manually enter CLI commands. The upgrade script allows you to upgrade  the CSS either automatically or interactively by responding to script prompts.
Either way, the tasks that the script performs include:
•Checking  to see how many installed software versions are installed on the CSS, and if the  CSS contains the maximum number of installed software versions, then deleting an  older software version.
•Archiving  the running configuration to the startup configuration.
•Copying  the new ADI to the CSS boot-image directory.
•Unpacking  the new ADI.
•Copying  the scripts and user profiles from the older CSS software to the new software.  The copied scripts do not include Cisco-supplied scripts except default-profile.
•Setting  the primary boot file to the new ADI.
•Rebooting  the CSS.
We recommend that you use the upgrade script because the  upgrade script ensures that the existing scripts and user profiles are copied to  the new software.
When manually upgrading the CSS software, you must enter CLI  commands to perform the same tasks that the upgrade script would perform.
You can run the upgrade script to perform the software  upgrade without having to enter any information. The script automatically:
•Checks to  see how many installed software versions are installed on the CSS. If the CSS contains the  maximum number of installed software versions, the script deletes an older  version.
Note The script  does not prompt you to delete a version of software that you configured as the  primary or secondary boot file. On a disk-based system, you may need to quit and  then deselect the primary or secondary boot file before continuing with the  upgrade.
•Archives  the running configuration to the startup configuration.
•Copies the  new ADI to the CSS boot-image directory.
•Unpacks  the new ADI.
•Copies the  scripts and user profiles from the older CSS software to the new software. The  copied scripts do not include Cisco-supplied scripts except default-profile.
•Sets the  primary boot file to the new ADI.
•Reboots  the CSS.

http://ciscosystems.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/data_center_app_services/css11500series/v8.20/configuration/administration/guide/Upgrade.html
Please revert back with the answers of my question and I believe we will be able to resolve your problem.
Best regards,
Sachin

I've downloaded the software and waiting for quite some time and after the dowloading has completed, the file will be processed. • CSS Software upgrade from sg0720003 to 8.20 questions

    Questions:
    1. To go from 7.20.3 to 8.20.x - do I need to go to a intermediate version first.
    2. On Cisco Softwrae Sownload site for CSS, I can see 3 files as follows:. Which one do I use to upgrade?

    3. Any gotchas / traps to remember before the upgrade.
    4. Is the prefered upgrade method - Manual or Automatic - Any advantages / disadvantages of either method?
    5. Is there a document with the upgrade procedure only?

    Hi,
You need to upgrade to an intermediate version of the software before you can upgrade to 8.20.  Acceptable versions are 7.30.4.02, 7.40.2.02 and 7.50.1.03. This is documented in Appendix A of the CSS 8.20 Admin manual - as is the upgrade procedure. AFAIK this is the only document that describes the update process.
For the upgrade you can use either the .adi or .adi.gz file - the CSS will automatically decompress the gzip version if you choose to use it.
Check the Release Notes for any changes to syntax for commands that you use.
I've used the automatic update process - assuming that the script would know what to do.  I did make sure that I had backups of the config archived on the CSS and on the FTP server - along with certificates.

  • Ilife 11 software upgrade failing and crashing with clicking noise happens

    HELP
after upgrading my 09 macbook pro to the ilife 11 software. all the others work fine, but iphoto has worked but it says before i can use it, I need to upgrade my library and about less than a 1/3 done it crashed and my mac makes a weird clicking noise?

Find the OS X installer DVD that came with your computer, or your Snow Leopard upgrade DVD if your computer came with Leopard or Tiger preinstalled — whichever installer disk contains the most recent version of Mac OS X. Insert it into the optical drive and start or restart the computer while holding down the "C" key. Keep holding down the "C" key until the Apple logo appears on the screen, then release it. The computer will start up from the DVD rather than from its internal hard drive, and that will enable you to repair the hard drive's directory using the Repair Disk routine. You wouldn't be able to run that routine if the computer had started up from the drive you were hoping to repair — much the same as you can't change the oil in your car while you're driving it.

  • Nokia Ovi Suite software upgrade fails

I have a Nokia 5230 but my problem is yesterday when I tried to connect my laptop to the internet through my phone using Nokia's Ovi Suite. A message DEMANDED that I first upgrade my Ovi Suite software, which obviously I could not do as I could then not connect to the internet. When I got connected through an ADSL line, the upgrade is continually unsuccesful. Message reads I may not be on the internet - clearly false - and then check my firewall settings. I have turned my firewall OFF and I get the same message. Any advice?

Hunchback: frankly it's a little more than an annoyance, it's an audacity! I started up Ovi suite to quickly download some photos I urgently needed for a presentation to find that Nokia had hacked into my computer and made software I installed and depended on unusable. I'm not sure what the legal situation is but it is certainly very bad business practice to force an update on your customers. The update has been running for 20 minutes on my PC now and is obviously hanging. I will set up my firewall to prevent any further communication between my PC and Nokia's websites as I can not have you alter software on my PC unauthorized. Frankly I'm shocked that you have that kind of access to my machine.

  • N93 Software upgrader fails

Heeelp, the long awaited software (firmware) update 11... for the N93 came on line in the last few days but when I run it the phone crashes (screen blanks) and looses PC connection. The software reports that the installation has failed after about 10mins of inactivity. Has anyone else seen this and is there a simple explanation? Two battery out-restarts clears the phone and it seems to work like before, no new software installed :-(
SIM and mSD were both in, General profile selected,

    hi guys
i've got notification that my phone will be coming back tomorrow
you can't imagine how happy i am
but i have been waiting since 18th october!!!
i owned the phone for 2 months but only had the phone for 1 month and the phone was dead and gone for 1 month.
since i did not buy the N93 from Nokia direct, i sent it to a grey import dealer where i bought it from. \
For lots of reasons I kept my mouth shut about why the phone died. i just told them "the phone for some reason just died!"
i'll update you guys about the phone tomorrow!
The Nokia N93 is seriously one of best phones out there.

  • Upgrade failed, now iPhone (3gs) in restore mode - help!

    Please help!
After syncing my iPhone (3GS) I tried to install new software. Backup went ok, however software upgrade failed, now iTunes states my iPhone is in recovery mode and needs to be restored. this happened last time i tried to upgrade software (before 4.0) and after restore I lost all contacts, photos etc. What actually happens during backup - one would assume that all the data goes somewhere so that you have a 'backup'????
    Yours hopefully
    Lindsey :0(

Hi...there IS a backup available to you. If you have "dropped" everything, by for example, pressing the Reset all to factory settings, then everything is gone.....but it is on your friendly computer under iTunes! Highlight your phone in the left column and in iTunes, when it shows your phone data, click on the CTRL and mouse click.....this gives you a pop up window, that gives you the chance to revert to the saved info and woohoo....it will all be back in the phone afterwards!

Try and force iPad into Recovery Mode:
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Connect USB cable to computer; leave the other end alone
    3. Press and hold the Home button down and connect the docking end of cable to iPad
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
    5. Release the Home button
    6. Open iTune
    7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode"
    8. Use iTune to restore iPad
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad

  • Failed Software Upgrade

Have a customer that reports a 4402 controller that has no console access after a software upgrade from 4.2.99 to 4.2.176.
They report they thought 4.2.176 went in ok but failed to read the configuration.
    So they loaded 4.2.112.0 ER.aes.
The controller powers up but no console access. Service port interface lights up but does not lease an address in DHCP.
From the look of the hyperterm log (before console was lost) both the primary and secondary were loaded with the same image version. But this failed it also appears the tftp load failed.
Is the controller bricked at this point?

are you using tftpd32 or similar as your tftp server - the newer wlc software revs are greater than 32MB. had a similar problem to you until i started using tftpd32 as my tftp server - see url:

  • Software upgrade on box-to-box redundant CSS's

I am planning a software upgrade from version 5.00 Build 63 to version 6.1 on a pair of CSS 11150 devices running box-to-box redundancy.
Should both devices be upgraded at the same time, or can I split them and upgrade on consecutive weekends ?

if it was 2 different 5.0 release, I would say ok.
But a 5.0 and a 6.1 release, it could be ok but that's not 100% sure.
Sorry, that's all I can say.
Maybe you could put both images on the CSS, boot the CSS out of 6.1 and configure them to reboot with 5.0 in case something wrong happens.
    Gilles.

Check your Windows settings along this contribution from Chrism0:

Also check that the ports 5353 and 5354 (Bonjour (mDNSResponder), AirPlay, Home Sharing, Printer Discovery) are open on Windows Firewall.

  • E71 firmware upgrade failed and mobile software co...

I recently purchased a new E71 and on the same day I run the "Phone software upgrade". It took around 2-3 hours to download and upgrade the phone. I saw it was updating to 3.x framework from 2.x.
When I see after 2-3 hours what I saw that screen was blank, nothing on screen and keyboard light was on. I restared by removing the battery and restarted, but nothing happened. But on my PC upgrade was successful.
How this is possible. Is the framework upgrade is this much critical ? OR is there any other way around to upgrade the framwork of the phone?
After this problem I submitted my phone to nokia care and they installed the framework again, because it was corrupted. Now I want to upgrade the framework, so please let me know how can i do this easily.

Have a look at the link below for details on how to update your firmware. It is probably the same as the procedure you used the last time.

  • On Windows 7 PC, got the "upgrade iTunes" notice, said sure, but the upgrade failed, now I can't access iTunes "invalid permissions"

On Windows 7 PC, got the "upgrade iTunes" notice this morning, said sure, but the upgrade failed, now I can't access iTunes "invalid permissions"
I wasn't paying attention so I don't know the precise error I got on the upgrade failure.
All other iTunes upgrades have been fine...no brainers.  Done several on this W7 PC.
If I re-download and install a fresh iTunes I assume I will lose my library...true?  Can I find and save off my library so I don't have to "discover" all my music which is scattered all over the PC and a 1T attached USB drive.
Or is there some way to get the iTunes upgrade to successfully restart and install correctly?
    Help!

    Hello there, Konami84.
The following Knowledge Base article provides some recomendations for troubleshooting:
iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows: Unable to install or open
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376
    Check for .dll files
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
    Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
    Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
    Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
