"The juice isn't worth the squeeze" (c) ...
Tim is 200% correct here: any performance gains (if any...) you'll get will fade in darkness compared to management burden you'll have with pass-thru disks (issues with failover, VM migration and no
real support with a major VM backup vendors). Making long story short: don't do it.
StarWind Virtual SAN clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

We configured some drives as mounted volumes and configured it with Failover cluster. But it's not showing up the mounted volume details with Cluster Manager, it's showing the details as seen below
Expect support from someone to correct this issue

    Hi LMS,
Are you doubt about the disk shown as GUID? Cluster Mount point Disk is showing as a Volume GUID in server 2012 R2 Failover Cluster I creating a mountpoint inside the cluster
and had the same behavior, instead of mount point name we had the volume GUI after volume label, that must by design.

  • Should I Install SQL Server 2008 R2 on a VHDX or Pass-through disk

    Hi,
I am in going to be setting a virtual server running Windows Server 2008 R2 on my Hyper-V cluster and I will be also adding SQL Server 2008 R2 once the OS is configured. Can you please suggest whether I should setup a VHDX or a pass-through disk? I have
read articles online suggesting to use a pass-through disk from my SAN but I also read that since Windows Server 2012, VHDX is as good as a pass-through disk, especially because it will allow to have snapshots taken, unlike the pass-through which will not.
Please advise on whether I should chose a pass-through disk or a VHDX.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Aquila,
There are three basic types of Virtual Hard Disks (VHDs) that you can use with VMs, such as dynamic VHD, fixed VHD, and differencing disks. Usually, the fixed VHD is almost always the best choice for virtualized SQL Server systems that run a production workload.
You can use dynamic disks for noncritical production workloads, as well as for testing, training, and lab environments. Pass-through disks offer the highest level of performance for VM storage, however, Pass-through disks can't be moved without incurring downtime,
and they don't support VM snapshots. For more information, see:http://sqlmag.com/sql-server/sql-server-virtualization-tips
In addition, there is an article about how to setup boot from VHD for a SQL Server. You can review the following link.
    http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/2327/how-to-setup-boot-from-vhd-for-a-sql-server-test-or-development-environment/

  • Reading hyper-v pass-through disks using WMI?

How do I read pass-through disks for a guest VM from a Hyper-V using WMI? I'd like to read the pass-through disks that are available to a guest VM using the below mentioned ways:
    1. Add a disk to Hyper-V server, take it offline and assign it as a physical disk to VM
    2. Configure iSCSI initiator in guest VM to get a disk directly from storage array
    3. Use VFC to export a fiber channel lun to guest VM directly.
    Thanks/Hem

You had another post with very similar questions, and I replied to it.  A broad answer is to use PowerShell as it does most, if not all, of the WMI work for you.  If you are having issues, it would be helpful for you to post specific questions
about the issues you are seeing.  If they are scripting questions, you would reach more scripting experts in the Scripting Guys forum (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/scriptcenter/en-US/home?forum=ITCG).
And you can go to the scripting gallery (http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/) to find examples of many, many different things.

  • OVM support for NPIV and pass through disks

    Hi Gurus,
    I have a couple of questions -
    1) Does OVM support NPIV?
    2) Does mapping the physical disks via the phy: definition in the vm.cfg file equivalent of pass through disks to the guest OS?.
    thanks!

    avasek wrote:
Thanks!. The pass through question was actually in context of usage with snap* products from netapp as they work with VMware. All the snap* work with RDM's in VM's (pass through's), so i was wondering if the snap* could be made to work with the phy: def to the VM's as well. The RDM def should be equivalent of the phy: def ..right?. So ideally, they ought to work?No idea, to be honest -- I haven't worked with NetApp gear yet. You're probably better off checking with NetApp directly as well.

  • Cannot clear "Current read-only" on pass through disk

This is not the end of the world, but it's very annoying so I'm hoping somebody can explain what's going on or perhaps suggest some additional troubleshooting.
Here's the scenario: Server 2012 Core VM  with the file services role installed and running as a role on a Server 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster. IDE 0 is a standard VHDX in clustered storage. There are 2 pass through disks on SCSI targets 1 and 2. I
proceed to attempt to add a 3rd pass-through disk:
    1. Create a 750GB LUN
    2. Mask the LUN to the cluster
    3. Online the new disk on a cluster node
    4. Initialize the disk on the node
    5. Offline the disk
    6. Using Failover manager, add the disk as new Available Storage in the cluster
    7. Using Failover manager to modify the file server VM's settings, add the new storage to SCSI target 3
    8. Using diskpart on the VM, clear the readonly flag from the disk
At this point, I was able to create a partition on the disk using new-partition with the -usemaximumsize flag, but I was unable to format it. It turns out the new partition size was 0 bytes. So I went back into diskpart and lo and behold, although the readonly
flag is cleared, the "Current readonly status" on the disk is still yes.
To test the issue, I offlined the disk in the VM, removed it from the virtual SCSI chain, removed it from cluster storage and then onlined it in the owner node. I was able to partition it, format it and create an empty folder, so it is not flagged readonly
    at the host or SAN.
So I offlined it on the node and added it back to cluster available storage and then added it back to SCSI target 3 on the VM.
Again, I removed the readonly flag from the disk and again it cleared but the disks "current" status remained "Yes" and I was unable to manipulate the disk.
Stop/start vds did nothing and as this is a production server I could not restart it midday.
So I offlined the disk in the VM and removed it from SCSI target 3, then added it to SCSI target 4. This time, when I online it in the VM and use diskpart to clear readonly, both readonly and "current" readonly clear just fine and now the pass-through
disk is operating as expected alongside the other 2 pass-through disks on the server.
Any ideas what went wrong in all this or how I can clear SCSI target 3 for another disk without having to restart the VM?

    Hi,
If the disk that you want to add appears in Disk Management but does not appear after you click Add a disk, confirm that the disk is configured as a basic disk, not a dynamic
disk. Only basic disks can be used in a failover cluster.

  • Export H264 pass-through movie with embedded text track QuickTime Pro 7 Windows?

Using QuickTime Pro 7 for Windows, I add a text track with closed captions to my H264 .mp4 videos.
The text track works great until I try to export it.  After I've added the text track, the text track is displayed as long as the track is selected to be active using the Movie Inspector track GUI.
My movies are encoded as H264 for cross-platform compatibility, and need to remain in this format.  The only way to save them in QuickTimePro 7 for Windows is to Export Movie to MPEG-4.  I select Pass-Through mode to retain the resolution and bandwidth parameters that I initially encoded the video with.
Unfortunately, after I export to MPEG-4, the caption track is lost.  It disappears.  When I open the newly exported MPEG-4 caption file, and select Movie Inspector, the caption track is missing.  Inspector only shows video and audio tracks.
If QuickTime Pro 7 for Windows correctly exported my text track with the video and audio tracks, then users would be able to view the closed captions upon playback in QuickTime Player by selecting View--> Show Closed Captioning (Ctrl+Alt+T).
Anyone been able to export to MPEG-4 pass-through movie with embedded text track QuickTime Pro 7 Windows?
    Thank you!

  • Need help on Hyper V 2012 for configuring pass through disks

    Hallo guys,
I have 7 hypervisors of Windows server 2012 running on bare metal, all are in cluster. I also configured SCVMM 2012 server.I created 10 Vm's. Now i want to make clusters of 2 node each & assign LUNs to my VM.
Storage guys have assigned all the LUNs to my physical servers, when i go to disk management of my physical servers , i see all LUNs are offline state(by default..)
My question is how do i assign the LUN to my VM? what is the steps for this ? i also wil be making 2 node cluster of VM's.
    Regards,
    Amol Sutar

    Hi Amol,
    >>i see all LUNs are offline state(by default..)
It's normal. To ensure the Guest has exclusive access to the storage, the LUNs must be placed in an
Offline state from the Hyper-V server perspective.

  • Pass-through recording with Canon ZR25

I have an older Canon ZR25.  Is it capable of pass-through recording from a VCR?  I can plug the VCR to the camera, and the camera to the computer via the firewire, but can't get anything to work.  Is my only option to actually record the VCR tape on the mini DV tape in the camcorder first, then transfer that to the computer?

  • YN 622C pass-through TTL with 430 EX II?

Have Canon T5i, Canon 430 EX II flash.
I bought a set of Yongnuo YN622C radio TTL triggers, and they work great for OFF-camera TTL.  I can set my 430EXII anywhere around a room and it shoots with perfect full TTL.
But when I have the YN622C on the Camera hotshoe, then put the 430EXII on top of that, right on the camera, the flash fires only as a manual flash.
The YN622C is supposed to have "pass through" ability - passing TTL settings through to the 430EXII mounted on top, but mine is not working.   I want to have one TTL flash on top of the trigger, on the camera, for a fill flash, and then another flash on the remote trigger for an off-camera flash.
Has anyone else used these triggers with success? Do I just have a set of faulty triggers that should be returned? or is there some special trick that I'm missing to get TTL pass through?.  It seems awfully strange that they work for OFF-camera TTL, but do not work when everything is mounted directly to the camera.

You should be able to have "pass through".  It seemed to work Okay when I tried it.
I would suggest doing a Reset/Clear to default.
Here is a link to a very good resource for using the YN-622C.  https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B77OmmGIg0gMVFpqNkpBYXBHajA/edit

  • Exchange 2013 MBX in DAG along with Hyper-V and Failover Cluster

Hi Guys! I've tried to find out an answer of my question or some kind of solution, but with no luck that's why I am writing here. The case is as follows. I have two powerful server boxes and iSCSI storage and I have to design high availability
solution, which includes SCOM 2012, SC DPM 2012 and exchange 2013 (two CAS+HUB servers and two MBX servers).
Let me tell you how I plan to do that and you will correct me if proposed solution is wrong.
    1. On both hosts - add Hyper-V role.
    2. On both hosts - add failover clustering role.
    3. Create 2 VMs through failover cluster manager, VMs will be stored on a iSCSI LUN, the first one VM for SCOM 2012 and the second one for SCDPM 2012. Both VMs will be added as failover resource.
    4. Create 4 VMs - 2 for CAS+HUB role and 2 for MBX role, VMs will be stored on a iSCSI LUN as well.
    5. Create a DAG within the two MBX servers.
In general, that's all. What I wonder is whether I can use failover clustering to acheive High Availability for 2 VMs and at the same time to create DAG between MBX-servers and NLB between CAS-servers?
Excuse me for this question, but I am not proficient in this matter.

    Hi,
As far as I know, it’s supported to create DAG for mailbox server installed in hyper-v server.
And since load balance has been changed for CAS 2013, it is more worth with DNS round robin instead of NLB. However, you can use NLB in Exchange 2013.

  • Disks are not shown in Failover Cluster Manager

    Hi All,
As per the validation report we have successfully configured cluster between two nodes. Active Node
my computer and failover cluster manager:
storage shows all the available clustered disks but not shown when clicked on active node in failover cluster manager.
Had a glimpse on few earlier posts and all I understood is that Windows Server 2008R2 has a bug and MS is working on it.
Do we have any fix for this issue? Please suggest.
Grateful to your time and support.

    Kalyan
Grateful to your time and support. Regards, Shiva

Got the solution in fact it's not a solution it's just an awareness on how the disks are available in fail-over cluster manager.
    1) All the available disks are shown in fail-over cluster manager "storage".
    2) While installation it asks us to add available disks for SQL Server then add accordingly. (Ex: E:drive for data files and L:drive for Log files)
    3) Once the installation is done you see those disks in MSSQL (SQL Server) group.
Means when you click on Active node it should show you MSSQL (SQL Server) group in which you can find network name, network ip, E: & L: Drives, SQL Server and Agent services.
Note: MSDTC and Quorum are also clustered disks which can reside (Preferably Active Node) in any of the nodes but automatically fail-overs to active node in case of any passive node failures.

I'm thinking of going back to a batchfile because that seems to do the job, but Powershell is much more powerfull.
Anybody got any answers on what is going wrong are some suggestions for a better script?

You have a number of problems here.
    1.  As mentioned you have UNC paths ... which means there's no reason for a package at all.  f you want SCCM to use the package it just downloaded you should use $PSScriptRoot (PS equivelant of %~0dp).  If the client is using v2 or earlier
... fix that quick by starting your script with:
    If (!$PSScriptRoot) {
    $PSSCriptRoot = Split-Path $MyInvocation.MyCommand.Path -Parent
Now you can call your install easy enough with a $PSScriptRoot+"\app.exe"
    2.  your discovery is failing after install.  This will always make SCCM report an installation failed even when the exit code is 0.  You can see it at the end of your log:
Matched exit code 0 to a Success entry in exit codes table. AppEnforce 17-4-2015 16:31:08 640 (0x0280)

So either your installation script is spitting out a exit code 0 regardless of the event OR your detection is wrong.
EDIT:  you have exit statemetns after failed installs ... but no exit code (simply exit).  Change those to exit 1 so sccm knows it's a failed exit and not just a generic exit.  That's probably your problem (unc can't be reached as system, you're
getting an exit  .... not defining exit 1).

  • Disk GUID shown at the Failover Cluster Manager instead of the NTFS Mount Volume Name

    Dear Team
I have built windows 2012 R2 fail over cluster. The sql server 2012 has been installed in cluster mode. When we add share disk for database it showing like General DBs\\?\Volume{665480bd-12d9-11dd-92ea-001cc442e304}\
Can you Please explain why it is showing in GUID like this. While in 2008 it is showing as
    O:\Miscellaneous\General DBs .
Also is it normal to have storage configuration in GUID in win2k12 R2 faliover
    cluster.
We need to have this NTFS mount volume name in our win2012 server. Pl reply
    Thanks

No problem it happens if you have drive letter conflict too at times.
So you can even change drive letter now also, but that must be available by that time.
However you should follow below method:
    1. Disks initialization, formatting, drive letter assignation and grouping for SQL Cluster should be planned and worked out first before sql server installation and testing failover nicely.
    2. Once you are sure that drive letters are proper and failing is happening fine then you can start installing SQL server.
    3. In future too if you assign existing drive letters of sql server to some other disk then same issues will happen.
So please be careful on this for example if system database disk drivers get changed then what will happen, even sql server will not for you as drive letters will be missing as system  will get adjust with the drive letter without caring about that
disk drive letter was carrying system db or just user db.
