Ctrl/Alt click to activate link closes current document

We just upgraded from Framemaker 7.2 to 12, and there's a behavior I can't figure out. I have a book file with cross-references between FM documents. Before, in FM 7.2, when I used Ctrl/Alt+click to activate a cross-reference link and follow the marker to a different Frame document, it left the original document open, and also opened the document the link caused me to jump to. In FM 12, it is closing the original document every time I click on a link to follow it. Is there a preference setting or another way to stop Frame from closing the first document every time it opens the document the link is referencing?

Some of these resources might come in handy...They have illustrated workflows and embedded videos. For more assistance: [email protected] and [email protected]

  • Ctrl-Shift-Click to open link in new tab (v10)

I came back to Firefox recently after trying to use Chrome for awhile. I was gratified by my return, except that in the update from v9 to v10, I found that one of my favorite keyboard shortcuts no longer worked as it had.
In v9 and previous, Ctrl-Shift-Click opened a link in a new tab and switched to it immediately. In v10, Ctrl-Shift-Click still opens the link in a new tab, but does not switch to it, even with '''Options: Tabs: When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately''' enabled.
When using the mouse method of opening a link in a new tab, it does switch to it immediately as expected.
I thought I was going to have to live with this (or not), but then found a bit of documentation noting that Ctrl-Click now provides the functionality I was used to.
Great! But on the other hand, backward compatibility with the old functionality would have spared me some temporary disappointment and some extra digging.
BTW, I note in another post several of the reasons why I came back to Firefox from Chrome.

Thanks, Edmeister, that info about the setting reversing the effects of the two key combo's is useful.
Having just installed FF 10 on a fresh installation of Windows, I see that the default setting for '''When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately''' is un-checked, and Ctrl-Shift-Click switches to the new tab as I had come to expect.
But on my own existing installation, that setting is checked. So if your observation about the behavior being uniform across v 8, 9 and 10 is correct, then I guess I must have changed this setting when I upgraded to v.10, or else the setting somehow "slipped" during the upgrade.

  • I can't open a new tab using Ctrl+T or by clicking on the + symbol. I can, however, open a new tab when holding down Ctrl and clicking on a link. How can I fix this please?

I used to be able to open a new tab using Ctrl+T but that has stopped working. Having I accidentally changed something?

  • Ctrl + double click, gone in CS4?

What happened to the 'ctrl + double click' shortcut to create a new document?
Double click to open a file still works, but the +ctrl (new file) and +alt (open as) are gone in CS4.
Can we please have this back, it's been there since the dawn of time and was kind of a reflex.
    Best regards.

There are so many short cuts its always annoying when an old favorite disappears.
But on the mindlessly optimistic side there are always so many more to pick a new favorite from.
My latest favorite is alt-Right Click and mouse move to change the brush size in all "brush based" tools, I use it all the time.
It's almost enough fun to make forgetting all the old ones you memorized almost worth it.

  • Cannot select layer via CTRL + ALT

    Hi,
If memory serves me right, in CS3 I was able to ctrl + alt click the layer while using the brush tool. I can no longer do that in CS4. To do it, I first have to click on the selection tool, then ctrl + alt click on an image to select it's corresponding layer, which is not a time saver. In any case, am I doing something wrong or need to enable some feature? Many thanks in advance.

CS4 has a new way of doing this, without changing tools permanently.
Carefully press and hold the V key on your keyboard. Whilst holding the V key, hold down the Control key. This shortcut will auto-select layers regardless of what tool you are using. When you release the V key, it will go back to whatever tool you had selected before.
They changed this, to accomodate the new brush resizing shortcut. Its hard when these habits become second nature, and most keyboard shortcut changes recently are honestly not very well thought out. But the new brush resizing shortcut is so essential that for once, its a worthwhile move.

  • When I click on a link within a website to open a document (word, excel etc.), Firefox doesn't open it. Even when I tell it to open in a new window, it just opens a blank tab labeled "untitled."

When I try to click on a link to a document within a website, that document doesn't open like it should. For instance, if I go to the census website and click on a link to open an excel spreadsheet, Firefox doesn't do it. It usually does nothing; if I tell it to open in a new window or tab, it just opens a tab labeled "untitled" that ends up being a blank page.

    Go to Tools->Options->Apps
Here you should see two columns: Content Type on the left, Actions on the right.
Find and select excel spreadsheet or any other content type in the left column. There should be a corresponding action in the right column. What is it? You can use the drop-down list to select the option you want:
Always Ask - Firefox will ask each time: What do you want to do with this file?
Save file - Firefox will save this file to your computer
Use - Firefox will give this file to the program to open it
In case of saving, Firefox will either prompt you every time where you want the file to be saved, or save it to the default location. It depends on the preference in

  • Document text now linked to another document - how to remove?

I admit I am new to InDesign and am learning through the proverbial firehose. I have been selecting, copying, and pasting content from one InDesign document into my current working document. Because the new document uses different Character and Paragraph Styles from the old one, I delete the ones that get copied over from the previous document and reassign all the copied text with the current ones. Up until now, this worked without problems. The last time I did this, somehow the imported content linked my current document to the old document I copied it from. So every time I try to modify it in the new document, even the smallest thing like deleting some text, it has to go back and open the old document before it can make the change in the new one. This really slows things down to practically being unusable. How can I break this link to the old document? Thanks! Phil

Hi Peter. I think I have a better understanding of what happened, although I'm not sure why it caused a problem. The best part is, I think I've found a workaround that stops the problem from happening. I had been working with all my InDesign files on a remote network drive, but was unhappy with the file transfer speed. So I copied the whole folder, with all the Documents, Books, Links, and everything, to a local hard drive and started working on them there. I think that is when the problem started happening.
After moving the files to my local drive, the file speed still seemed slow, but I didn't realize until this morning that even when I open the Book on the local drive, it is still pointing to all the documents on the network drive. I only realized this when I looked at the Documents on my local drive, and they were still earlier versions, all the updated documents were still on the network drive. So, suspecting that the problem had something to do with confusion of file locations, I did two things. First, I copied the whole folder AGAIN from the remote drive to my local drive. Then I opened the offending Document directly (not via the Book) and deleted the last section I had copied and pasted from the old Document. This seemed to cure the problem of it always looking for the old Document it was copied from. Then I deleted the Book itself, and am in the process of reconstructing it using all the Documents on the local hard drive folder.
This raises a few questions about the best way to work.
    1) Is it better to edit individual documents of a Book by opening them from within the Book, or should I edit them individually, and then update the Book when I am all done? I'm starting to think the latter would give faster response, because the Book would not always have to update all the Documents with every change you make in one of them.
    2) When I'm done with the Book, I then want to move the whole package (Book, Documents, Links, Fonts, etc.) to a network drive for access by other users. Will I need to delete and rebuild the Book after I have moved it to the network drive, since otherwise it would still be pointing to the Documents on my local drive? Or is there an easier way?
Also, if you can recommend a good reference with this kind of information, it would be much appreciated. I do have InDesign CS5 Classroom in a Book, but it doesn't have this kind of information.
    Phil

  • I cannot open a new tab any way..by clicking the new tab button on tab-bar, or ctrl/T, or File/New Tab, or clicking on link on current page.

On Windows7 Premium Home Edition, I cannot get a new tab to open no matter what I try. On occasion, if I click on a link on the current page, a second tab will open, but 99% of the time I am stuck using the first tab for everything and using the back button. I have tried ctrl/T, File/New Tab, right mouse click/New Tab, and the new tab button on the tab bar to the right of the current tab.

Uninstall the '''''Ask Toolbar'''''. It can cause that problem.

  • Why does ctrl+Left click a link open a new window? It should open a new tab in the current window.

When I try to Ctrl+Left click to open a link in a new tab, it will open it in a new window instead. Then while in the new window if I Ctrl+Left click a link it will open a new tab in the second window. If I then go back to the first Firefox window and Ctrl+Left click a link the second firefox window will pop up and the new tab will be created there. Why won't the Ctrl+Left click work when only one window is open?

  • I can't get Firefox to open a new tab each time I click on a link or favorite. It keeps loading onto the current tab.

I went to Tools>Options>Tabs and entered a check mark next to the first entry, "Open New Windows in a New Tab Instead" but it still does not open a new tab each time I click on a link or one of my favorites. It used to way back in earlier versions of Firefox but hasn't for the past few iterations...am I doing something wrong or do I need to activate something else within Firefox?

That option only controls pages that would open in a new window based on the code on the website page you are visiting.

  • When I close firefox with ctrl-alt-delete, I want to start over on Firefox, I usually do this when too many tabs and windows are open. However, Firefox always restores the tabs and windows I previously had. How can I stop that from happening?

This happens when FireFox is not responding, and I want to close firefox with ctrl-alt-delete. Too many tabs can make Firefox crash. That is why I want to use ctrl-alt-delete to close FireFox. I tried finding a way to disable this, but I found no option to.

Ending the Firefox program or process with the Windows Task Manager "looks like" a crash. The proper way to exit Firefox is click Firefox button > Exit (or File > Exit, if using the Menu Bar).

  • Ctrl + left click doesn't open links in new tabs although I don't have Tabmix addon

In a previous thread, this question has been answered as related to Tab Mix Plus and resolved as "Disabled extension Tab Mix Plus 0.3.8.6, now ctrl + left click opens links in new tabs"
However, I don't have Tab Mix installed at all. I have Tab Utilities 1.1.5. Probably that one interfers with the behaviour.
Is there a way to resolve this without giving up Tab Utilities or is there any other good tab utility addon that doesn't prevent Ctrl + left click?
This behaviour appeared after updating Firefox. Thus, I don't agree to consider it just a problem of addons but rather Firefox itself! I don't want to give up Tab Utilities until standard Firefox settings cover all (or at least most) of the functions it offers.
Thank you for any ideas and suggestions.
