Ctrl D to place items in illustrator

I spend most of my working life using InDesign, where Ctrl D is used to place an item. It would be good to be able to do this in illustrator as a matter of consistency between the programs. Thanks for listening!

I've done keystroke shortcuts before in illustrator and now as I'm trying to put one in it won't accept the command key or a letter in the entry box and as I remember you have to do something else, not just hit command but I can't thing of what it is!

Thank you for taking the time with this issue. I do use a Mac with the latest OS X.
I have solved the issue simply by deleting all Adobe apps (cc 2014) I ran the Adobe app cleaner tool and deleted all traces of my Adobe software.
Then I re-installed all my apps and the issue has been resolved. In fact my Adobe apps (cc 2014) appear to be working better than ever before.
I think I may have had a corrupt preference file stored somewhere on my system. However, that was deleted and all is working fine now, better than ever before.

Since the recent Firefox update, our customers can no longer place items selected for purchase into the shopping cart; what is the cause and the fix?

Since Firefox was recently updated, customers who use Firefox as their browser can no longer place items selected at our e-commerce site into their shopping cart. We are not experiencing this problem with customers who use IE as their browser.

I created a brand new blank Captivate 6 file, applied a theme, inserted a few new slides and tried Preview. It worked! All four of the Captivate files I used in my previous testing were based on one file which hadn't been touched for two weeks. Somehow while working in the lastest file, either removing unused items from the Library or killing errors while Publishing, something somewhere got corrupted or removed. Something that all four files must have pointed to, since as soon as the latest file broke, all of the other files stopped working as well. Since the original file was inherited, I'm not even sure how to go about finding the problem. In my case, it won't be too big of a deal. I will create a clean template file and rebuild.

Embedding items from Illustrator into Indesign

I am working on a 100-page book. Instead of importing or placing my Illustrator charts and graphs, I am embedding them into the Indesign file. I am doing this because for the most part they come in crisper and clearer than when importing them. The client wants to be able to see the charts clearly and it also makes it easier for me to line them up in the layout.
Everything works like a charm except that with every few charts, I get this message when pasting:
"This command would create a large number of page items and would severely degrade performance.Data will be placed as an embedded file."
In this case, I get the rough preview image as though I had imported the files. It is hard to predict when this happens. Does anyone know a fix for this?
I am using CS3; System 10.5.8.

There's no fix (That I know of). After a certain amount of vector points, InDesign places an embedded file only.
I tend to place alot of vectors in InDesign for ease of editing, but I keep them simple.
Note: Placed vectors will not export to epub, so You'd have to put them back in illustrator, if you need that function.
For " crisper and clearer", I'm not sure what you mean? For looking at onscreen? It shouldn't affect a PDF.
And, are you using high quality preview when you place the illustator images?

Files saved in newly updated Photoshop will not place correctly in Illustrator

I cannot seem to place any images in Illustrator CC that have been edited/saved with the newest update of Photoshop CC. These are images with no layers and no transparencies, and are no more than about 300px x 600 px, 300dpi. I have saved, resaved, saved as a new file name, saved in a new location, downloaded a fresh stock file and reedited and saved elsewhere, saved in .jpg, .tif, .psd, and .png and all efforts end up with a gigantic colored rectangular object. The object is so massive that I cannot even resize it because Illustrator says the object would be too large. Any images that I have not opened and saved in PS will place just fine, it only seems to be those that I save in PS that are a problem, and only since I ran the update this morning.
I am using OS X 10.9.5, 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3 ram with fully updated PS CC (2014) and Illustrator CC (2014).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Evidently Solidworks changed the output of their files to a format that AI cannot interpret. Just backsave in Solidworks to the required version.

Unable to place images in Illustrator

Hi, Im still learning the program but this is an error that hasn't occurred before under the same circumstances. I am working on Macs at uni (as I dont have Illustrator at home) and with images from my USB drive. I want to get the images into my ai document and trace them to make a logo, but Illustrator is preventing me from doing this in any way I try.
* I try to 'place' (file>place...) a jpg from the USB into the ai document and one of three things happens:
1. It appears as though nothing has happened so I 'select all' and this highlights an empty box where my image should be. This always happens on the first try after I open the document.
2. I delete the box and try again. This time not even the invisible box is placed. The computer processes and then acts as if I commanded it to do nothing.
3. Irregularly, if I try again it seems like it's about to happen (with a preview showing and asking me to approve) and then I get the message "the operation cannot complete because of an unknown error".
* I tried opening the jpg in Photoshop and copying and pasting from there and got the same "unknown error" message, followed by the empty invisible box.
* The images place in photoshop with no problem.
* The images cant be dragged and dropped into Illustrator.
* I tried opening the image with Illustrator and get the message "insufficient memory was available to complete the operation". The image is only small - less than 1MB.
* I tried changing the file to a tiff and a pdf. I tried uploading the jpg to internet and saving and placing from there but this is unsuccessful. I tried other images saved both from my computer and the uni computer and they dont work.
* SOMETHING WORKS: I tried with random images from the internet and some (usually around 4kb) saved to Documents and placed are done so successfully. But this is no use to me.
I have done this in the past and there have been no problems placing or pasting images whatsoever. I dont think uninstalling is really an option as they are the uni's computers and that would probably be an ordeal.. I really need this to be fixed quickly as I have no other access to Illustrator and it's part of a job. It happens with all the computers in the lab. I cant even start making the logo until this is overcome. I would really appreciate some help! your ideas on what the problem could be and what needs to be done to fix it.

One causes of this error I've encountered has to do with the volume size of the disk the user's home folder is stored on.
I'm guessing that Simon Manion is logged onto the Mac at his university using a networked home folder that is stored on a volume larger than Illustrator scratch disk management routines can handle. (2TB is the limit I think.)
The workaround that I've been using is to create a 500MB disk image with Disk Utility, mounting the image, and using it as the only scratch disk. You may need to make your disk image larger. (Remember to restart Illustrator for the new scratch settings to take effect.)
Even though the actual local volumes are under 2TB, they don't seem to work as scratch disks if the user's home folder lives on a large server. For some reason, setting the scratch disk to a virtual volume gets thing working correctly.
This has solved the place image problem for me in Illustrator CS, CS2, and CS3.

SAPSCRIPT how to place item header on next page

Hi Guys
The situation iam facing is this
outside the loop i have printed the item header then iam looping on an internal table which is printing all the items.
When the o/p is one page this works fine but when the o/p is more than one page the item header on the next page dosent get printed because its outside the loop.
somewhat like this
perform print_header.
loop at itab.
perform print_item.
endloop.
Question is how can i place the item header text element in my sapscript so that it prints automatically before the start of the items on every page?

Use the following in Text Editor on Script form.

Or.
Use a variable window. To print the header
So it will come for every new Page.
Or.
Define &CURRENT PAGE&

ENDIF
&CURRENT PAGE& = &PAGE&

Continuing... to select more points or items in illustrator with click shift and drag?

OK,
here is the dilemma, and i bet there is a nifty shortcut to it.
We all know how to continue select say object or points within illustrator yes, in saying this we will select one point, and then use thte mouse to select more points by covering space over a document, whilst holding shift(multiple itmes etc.)
As i am trying to select more points, but say, they are scattered small individual shapes, like say little specks of small shapes, but countless, millions, but at the same time i have other shapes which i dont want to select, but, i want to continue selecting shapes thouhgh whilst holding down shift, i dont want to reverse the procedure, i want to select more and more tiny dots, even if i click and drag over the already selected dots.
Now, how do i go about saying holding down an extra key, lets just say, the letter h for example on the keyboard, and it will activate the whole click drag and shift procedure but to not deselect the points i already i have selected..
If this does not make sense let us know, but i was wondering for what i am doing, i want to be able to continue working my way up with selecting a whole array of tiny shapes, but select more and more as i work my way up or down.
If you dont understand try it in illustrator first and see what i mean, then get back to us, as for what i am doing i need a shortcut, along with the shift key and click drag.

Short answer.. You can't. Shift-clicking is a toggle. It selects or deselects based on the current selection state. If you shift-click or shift-click-drag over a selected object, it will become deslected in all cases.
Long answer... Probects invoving intricate objects are generally best handled by good layer management. Setting up a project using layers as you construct can make selections much, much, easier in the long run. Of course, if something is already created it may not be an easy task to rethink layers. There's also the little known "Save Selection" item in the Select menu. This will allow you to save something you already have selected and reslect it later. You might find that you can shift-select an area, save that selection, then start selecting another areas. This doesn't really address your initial issue since you can't shift-load a selection to add it to the existing selection. But it may help with getting some things selected, then reselected easily.
You can also shift-click the selection circle next to an object in the Layers Panel. This avoids mis-clicks or accidentally selecting something you already had selected.

Unable to place image in Illustrator CC 17.1

I just installed Illustrator 17.1 on a new computer and I am unable to place (or copy and paste) an image file in to Illustrator. I do not receive an error. I've tried restarting and removing all of my Illustrator preferences.
I found the following article on the same issue, and it was a fontexplorer plugin. I do not seem to have this plugin installed so, I do not think that is the issue.

I have a template form called"tmplt.fmb"
The template contains a block named "Bean_block"
and one bean item
I need to place the bean item on cg$page_1.
canvas cg$page_1 is not on my template, It is generated by designer and i want to place the bean on it when generating the form by designer.
I do not know how?

actually my scenario is....
i have loaded my forms to B1....and accessing those forms using menu events...first time when form is loaded the cursor control is automatically coming on to my first control..
but when my form is changed to ADD mode or Find Mode...i'm unable to see my cursor position on my control(textBox)...
what should i do...to focus control on my textbox when form is changed its mode....
and hwere should i write the logic...
i tried logic oform.ActiveItem = oform.items.item("7").specific
in my formload() function and item events also....
its not working...

Is it possible to 'Load Up' the cursor with several 'Place' items?

It happens often enough that I have a folder with several items I want to place. I can go back and forth individually and command D to the folder window choose the next item and then place in the document. When there are page after page of items, it would be handy to be able to select several items that will go on one page and then 'spit them out' so to speak, from the cursor by repeated clicks, machine-gun style. Is this possible to do?

Absolutely. Select them all. If they aren't in the correct order when you go to place, use the arrow keys to cycle through, and the Esc key to cancel an object.

How to correlate items in Illustrator document in GUI vs scripting objects?

As a novice to Illustrator and Illustrator scripting. I notice that without good knowledge of Illustrator (the GUI and/or scripting), it's a bit tricky to correlate the type of item/object an item is as seen in the Illustrator GUI selecting the item on screen and/or seeing it in the layer's window. Because both of those don't indicate the matching Illustrator scripting item/object type, and I have to guess at what it is (or iteratively/recursively dump all items and see if I can figure out what is what from the dumped items from the script comparing to the info/properties in the UI).
Or is there some mapping feature that will indicate this that I overlooked? If not, how best to correlate?
As some examples:
* how to figure out what type of object text is that we see in the Illustrator document (assume total novice, not knowing specific text types in Illustrator)
* how to figure out whether a certain item in a layer is a page item, path item, or both? I can't tell.

Yeah, sometimes the Preview window likes to perform a
pisadeering act for us!
You might give the following steps a try:
1. Close RoboHelp HTML.
You need to do this because the values we are about to change
will be destructively changed once we close RoboHelp HTML and
restart.
2. Open the Windows Registry Editor.
(All standard disclaimers apply. Back up the registry,
sacrifice a chicken, yadda yadda yadda)
3. Locate the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\version\RoboHTML\version\MontereyFrame\
4. Double click the item labeled Preview in separate window
and ensure the value is set to 1. If it already is, terrific. If
not, change it to 1 and click the OK button. It doesn't matter if
the option is set to Hex or Decimal.
5. Double click the item labeled PreviewMaximized and ensure
the value is set to 0. If it already is, terrific. If not, change
it to 0 and click the OK button. It doesn't matter if the option is
set to Hex or Decimal.
6. Double click the item labeled PreviewWindowCX. Make sure
the option is set to Decimal and set the value to 50. Then click
the OK button.
7. Double click the item labeled PreviewWindowCY. Make sure
the option is set to Decimal and set the value to 50. Then click
the OK button.
8. Double click the item labeled PreviewWindowX. Make sure
the option is set to Decimal and set the value to 50. Then click
the OK button.
9. Double click the item labeled PreviewWindowY. Make sure

Can we disable the default menu groups/items in Illustrator?

I was wondering whether we can disable/enable any menu item/group in Illustrator? I am working on Illustrator CS4, 5 on windows. To be more specific, can we disable the kSaveMenuGroup, so that the save options appear disabled..?? I tried using the methods described in AIMenuSuite structure reference. But, this only disabled the pre-defined groups added by the plugins.. Any help would be appreciated..

You could probably set the document state to not modified. But you'd have to be pretty diligent about it, since every time a change is made you'll need to reset the state. And the user would still be able to Save As...

How place items using the DTW in three warehouse

I have been trying to use the DTW to place exisiting items in new warehouse after after forgeting to turn on the Auto add option.I have been trying to create the templates to no avail it keeps giving errors-"DTW import error - value too long in property 'warehouse' of item warehouseinfo"
The template looks like this since they are 2 file i am using

You should use OITM-Items and OITW-WarehouseInfo DTW templates in order to insert new warehouse into the items.
Once you fill up both the template run it together...........
Put the recordkey common in both the templates so that it would be compared.
