Ctrl Layer vs Marquee Selection Issue

Ok so my problem is that I have one layer filled with blue a second layer a third the size filled with white.
I control click the thumbnail of the white layer (second layer) to get precise size then click the blue layer (with the marching ants still moving) and hit delete.
Ok now that part of the blue layer is gone, which is what I wanted but when I hit control T for transform of the blue layer it now includes the deleted area not just the remaining blue.
I know right?
But when I marquee over the blue layer where the white is and then hit delete it removes that selection and and now when I control T it conforms to the blue not including the deleted area.
But I fear I wont get a precise selection and this is why I like doing it the first way.
I have been doing this for years and using PS since version 3 and today I have an issue.
I reset my pref. and tool reset all. Nothing else is acting strange just this.
I am on a windows 64bit system.
Many thanks for any input.

It's a wee bit tricky following your post, which is probably why it has gone so long without an answer up till now.
I never like making holes in layers because it is so permanent.  I would place the blue layer above the white BG, ctrl click the layer with the shape I wanted, then add a layer mask to the blue layer.  That way I can edit the mask to control the hole.   You can unlink the mask, and FT the mask, or layer separately etc.
I'd also leave the white layer even if not being used, because I could come back and load it as a selection at any time by ctrl clicking it.  I find this flexible and fast, and much better than saving alpha channels.
If I am going in the wrong direction here then I can only say sorry, but as I said, it was tricky following your post with my tired old eyes.

  • Is there a way to make a new layer from a selection simply by dragging?

    I recently watched a video of an artist working and I swear it looks like he made a lasso selection on a smart object layer, dragged the selection, and instantly created a new layer of the selection alone. He did this successively to sample parts of an image for later usage. I can't figure out for the life of me how he was doing it and I can't find anywhere that PS has this ability. For one, lassoing an area of a smart object doesn't allow me to duplicate that selection, PS acts like I want to duplicate the entire image, if I hold down the ALT key. Also, if I try to make a duplicate of a selection with a non-smart object layer I can duplicate the selection via dragging by holding ALT, but the duplicate is still on the same layer as the original object, which is NOT what I want. I know how to use copy/paste, so PLEASE do not suggest that I do this, OR use the CTRL+J feature. I'm simply trying to figure out what this person is doing. If this makes no sense I can provide a link to the video...

    Maybe you missed him doing the copy paste because he used the short cuts Ctrl+C Ctrl+V which would not be seen in a video. It would look like a drag in a video....

  • Menu selection issues in Flash CS4 for Mac

    I'm having a few menu selection issues in Flash. It seems some fields are de-selecting automatically (and quickly). For instance:
    1) When I double-click a layer to change it's name, it highlights then immediately de-selects. I can only rename by right-clicking and bringing up the Properties dialog.
    2) Fields highlight briefly then immediately de-select in the Properties menu when using the Tab button to advance or cycle thru fields. I have to click on each field individually to enter dimensions/characters.

    On occasion, I'm having an issue in Photoshop where the tools are off by 30 pixels or so. Examples:
    - Paint brush affects an area approximately 30px to the right and down from the brush head.
    - Selection tool selects an area approximately 30px to the right and down from the arrow head.
    This only happens on occasion and can be fixed by restarting Photoshop. I have not had any luck fixing the problems experienced within Flash.
    I'm experiencing this on two different machines that have CS4 installed. My only guess is a conflict with a Logitech driver OR a Wacom driver, but I have uninstalled the software and unplugged the Logitech mouse and Wacom tablet to no avail.
    Long time Flash/Photoshop user.... never had a problem like this.
    Anyone else have these issues or know a fix?

    Hi there,
    This is a known issue, however we have not been able to reproduce it internally. The way to fix it (assuming it's the same problem) is to change your workspace (such as resetting to a default shipping layout, and then modifying from there), as it seems as though something about the workspace is causing the problem. It could be very specific to where its layed out on your monitor(s), some exact pixel size of a panel and/or grouping - and so on. However, we haven't been able to reproduce this internally yet - only reproed and fixed similar problems - so I cannot say for sure, however changing the workspace has fixed it for the other users I've talked to seeing this one.
    If you are able to share the following about one or both of your computers and send it to jdh (at) adobe, greatly appreciated:
    * workspace XML file from the Configuration directory (before changing the workspace!)
    * description monitor layout (ie: primary on left, secondary on right... or "one" )
    * monitor resolution(s)
    * screenshot(s) of your layout exhibiting the problem
    Thanks!

  • Command-clicking layer name does not load layer as a selection (Photoshop CS2)

    Q: Why does Cmd-clicking a layer name not load the layer as a selection in Photoshop CS2?
    A: You must Cmd-click the layer thumbnail, not the layer name, to load the the layer as a selection.
    In Photoshop CS2 Cmd-clicking the layer name in the Layers Palette selects the layer. To select multiple layers use the following keystrokes:
    1. Multiple contiguous layers = Shift+click layer name
    2. Multiple non-contiguous layers = Cmd+click layer name
    See also Adobe Knowledgebase
    Document 329005

    It works for me and doesn't seem to care what tool i have selected or anything like that to make a difference. Maybe you should reset your preferences as it may be a glitch.
    Hold Ctrl+Alt+Shift as soon as you tell photoshop to startup, and it will ask you if you want to delete the preferences, just click yes. (If you have a custom UI that you want to save, goto Windows>Workspace>Save Workspace, and then just reload it after resetting prefs.)

  • Load layer as an selection

    Is it possible in Applescript or JavaScript to load a layer as an selection, the way you do manually with
    pressing-and-hold the Command (PC: Ctrl) key and click on the layer's thumbnail?

    Here is the javascript version.
    function loadLayerTransparencyToSelection() {
        var desc = new ActionDescriptor();
            var ref = new ActionReference();
            ref.putProperty( charIDToTypeID('Chnl'), charIDToTypeID('fsel') );
        desc.putReference( charIDToTypeID('null'), ref );
            var ref = new ActionReference();
            ref.putEnumerated( charIDToTypeID('Chnl'), charIDToTypeID('Chnl'), charIDToTypeID('Trsp') );
        desc.putReference( charIDToTypeID('T   '), ref );
        executeAction( charIDToTypeID('setd'), desc, DialogModes.NO );

  • Marquee selection in CS4 "crops" to image edges. How to reset?

    In CS3, when you make a large selection using the circular marquee (ie: alt-drag until the selection grows past the image edges), it maintains the full selection.  But in CS4, it crops to the edges of the image.  Is there an option to fix this so marquees behave like they did in CS3?
    See the image below for an example of what I mean:

    the_wine_snob wrote:
    Thank you for the report. Now, did the Layer (Selected and active), have pixels beyond the borders of the image?
    To answer the question, yes. But... drawing a marquee and then dragging it out works irrespective of layer content.
    Just checked again:
    1/ In CS3, drawing marquee, irrespective of content, retains the circular shape even if exceeding the canvas.
    2/ In CS4, irrespective of content, marquee crops to the two sides of the canvas with the circular shape that was inside.
    3/ In both CS3 and CS4 you can draw a marquee within the canvas and then drag it out
    Maybe there's a setting in CS4????
    PS - I just cannot imagine any Selection encompassing any area, where no pixels can be selected, as there are none.
    Hunt... that doesn't make sense... of course you can draw a marquee / selection without content... It's the copying / cutting /etc. that will be affected...
    PS: For some strange reason, i see you're back to 'the_wine_snob'!!  At least in the message quote!

  • Marquee Select files?

    I just bought my first Mac MBP 17. I tried to do some file management and found out how to select a range, Shift click beginning and end, same as windows. Select multiple individual files by cmd click, ctrl click in windows.
    What I can't seem to figure out how to do is Marquee select. I tried shift click drag, cmd click drag, option click drag, etc.. Is it not there? I used help and searched for marquee and it wasn't there.
    Kirk

    In anything other than Icon view, the files/folders will highlight as you select them - you don't get the marquee box like you do when in Icon view. Like I said, range-selecting in List, Column or CoverFlow requires that you start your click-and-hold somewhere other that on the icon or file name before you start to drag-select. It takes a little practice and getting used to, but once you figure it out, you'll be good to go.

  • How do i take one layer with multiple selections...

    how do i take one layer with multiple selections and make those selections their own layer?

    Yes sir. It w was really hard to explain. It is discontiguous segments that are separated by transparent areas. And I want those non transparent areas to be on their own layer. I have a photo shop file that has a bunch of buttons on them and they are on a transparent background. It is one layer. I want to select all the buttons and put them on their own layers. I can do this manually by selecting a button and cmd Just to a new layer, but when I have 200 buttons it is a daunting task.

  • Replace layer names in selected layers only

    I am using this script to find and replace words in layers. (The script only targets particualr words, rather than the whole layer name).
    I would like to make it so it targets selected layers only.
    I have found this script which loops through selected layers only, but I am not sure how to add the find and replace layer name functioality.
    Thanks for any help that can be offered.

    Looking through the guide, it doesn't seem "hasSelectedArtwork", is a built in function either. Are there any tutorials or guides that explain how to target selected layers?
    Wrong reference manual, see this one:

    Page 91 -- CHAPTER 1: JavaScript Object Reference

    If true, an object in this layer has been selected; set to false to deselect all objects in the layer.
    So as I talked about here:

    Correct. Yeah there is no direct way unfortunately (like many things via scripting), thats why I suggested using "hasSelectedArtwork", that would work if you select the layer target when selecting your desired layers to rename.
    and...

    if(layerReferenceString.hasSelectedArtwork == true){

    That would offer a way to know if a layer is selected or not.
    As far as I know that is the only round about way of knowing if a layer is selected via scripting.

  • Datagrid select issue

    I am using flex builder 2.01 and have been using datagrids
    for a while now. I have recently ran into a weird situation where I
    have one datagrid out of three that just will not allow a manual
    selection. If I set the index to 0 for instance, the initial view
    of the datagrid shows the first item selected. If I go to select a
    different item, the first item becomes unselected and no other item
    can be selected. If I leave the initial state to be no item
    selected, I can never select an item. All other datagrids are
    working fine. I have tried to set selectable to true but that
    didn't help. This is really odd, any assistance would be greatly
    appreciated.

    Mmmm... Well the good news is I fixed it. The bad news is I
    have no clue why it fixed it. This particular datagrid is in a
    different tab in a tabnavigator panel. Attached is the expanded
    working code. On the line:
    <mx:Canvas label="Archived" width="100%" height="100%"
    id="ArchiveTab">
    I had a click="{GetPropertyArchive()}" to refresh the data on
    tab selection. This was old code that was made unnecessary at a
    later date but I did not remove the code. My guess is the datagrid
    assumed the characteristics of the parent tabnavigator and instead
    of ... wait that can't be right. If that was the case then changing
    the datasource would not have fixed the select issue because the
    'click' definition on the tabnavigator still existed. I would
    really like to understand why this mattered so I could avoid this
    issue in the future. Any ideas??

  • Since installing the latest update of Photoshop CC two days ago, Auto Blend for focus stacking is selecting all pixels from the bottom layer instead of selecting the ones in best focus from each layer. Has anyone else seen this problem?

    I installed the latest update of Photoshop CC two days ago on my Macbook Pro, and now when I try to do focus stacking by opening multiple photos and doing Auto Align and Auto Blend, the blend selects the entire bottom layer instead of selecting the in-focus areas from each layer. I even tried again on a series of images where this worked a week ago and the problem occurs. I have Photoshop on a Windows 8 machine and did not apply this latest update and it works fine. Has anyone else encountered this?

    And since installing this same update, my Photoshop is crashing just after starting.
    Ashutosh.Nigam suggested me in this forum to change the permissions to SLStore & SLCache Folder, but it did not work.
    Ali from french Adobe support told me to delete my Settings files, but it was not enough.
    A girl with no name from the same team told me to update my video card driver, but you know I run the latest Mac OS X version and everything is updated, mademoiselle.
    Stephane sent me a link to a huge page of things to do :
    -  Troubleshoot account-specific fonts, but there wasn't any corrupted font
    - Delete account-specific Adobe cache files but... guess what...
    - Troubleshoot account-specific login items but... yes, that's it, I can see you understand me
    - Reset the access settings on the user account's Library folder... oh god, that was fun, I used the Terminal and sudo commands
    I did all of these things because when I tried to open PhCC in an other admin session, it worked, so that was an incompatibility between my session and PhCC. But, but, but, when I tried again to lauch the app in the second session, it worked fine but refused to quit. Ha ha ha.
    So you can try to delete your Settings files. I wish it'll work for you. If not you can try the long list above... or hope a better answer from the support.
    I didn't change anything but Photoshop on my session and they ensure that the bug is due to my session and not to their update. Strange affair.
    Good luck,

  • Could not make a new layer from the selection because the selected area is empty

    I have Photoshop CS5 and I'm trying to do a selection on a new layer and when I copy it this message appears: "could not make a new layer from the selection because the selected area is empty"..
    The new layer is selected, no other layer is selected. What the hell am I doing wrong???....Yes I'm a beginner.. ....please help?

    Hi There,
    So just to clarify you have made a new blank layer, made a selection on that layer and then done a Layer > New > Layer via Copy (or cmd J).
    The reason that you would get this error message is you have made a selection on a blank layer (effectively selecting nothing) and tried to duplicate it and Photoshop won't let you do that.
    When doing New Layer via Copy or New Layer via cut you selection needs to include some painted (coloured) pixels.
    Regards
    Paul
    PS. Maybe you could explain what you are trying to achieve by copying the layer and I could help a little more.

  • Does Illustrator have an equivalent to Photoshop's rectangular marquee selection tool?

    I am trying to select just a piece of an image in an Illustrator file to copy and re-scale, but I can't find the equivalent to Photoshop's rectangular marquee selection tool. Is there such a tool? Otherwise, I guess I can make the edits in photoshop and place in illustrator. Thanks!

    There are workarounds, but if you want to do yourself a favour, just do it in Photoshop or another Raster application.

  • When pressing Enter/Return to commit  a marquee selection the Feather box turns white for input!?

    When pressing Enter/Return to commit a marquee selection the Feather box turns white for input (and I'm not trying to chage the feather values)!?
    Pressing Enter/Return should commit the selection but it doesn't why? I have not changed any short-cut preferences in PS CS6.
    When I use the Marquee or Lasso tool and make a selection and I'm happy with the selection, I press the Enter (PC)/Return(Mac) and the the "marching ants" should disappear...
    this has always worked until today!?
    Now, when I press the Enter key, the Feather box (next to the Anti-alias) on the upper left corner goes from grey to white and wants me to change the value?

    I was not able to reproduce the behavior you mentioned, though I don't normally make a practice of using the Enter key for that function (I tend to double-click to close the selection).
    Nor could I reproduce the behavior by holding down a modifier key.
    Have you tried restarting Photoshop?
    Rebooting?
    Resetting Photoshop's preferences to defaults?

  • Marquee selecting audio region then hitting DELETE crashing Logic

    When I marquee select and audio region and hit delete it crashes Logic everytime. Is it a setting I have maybe unknowingly checked off that restricts the use of marquee? It happens when I marquee just audio AND audio+blank space. How am I supposed to trim as I go along?
    OK, now it's working, but I'm not going back to the original place where it was happening. Is it possible that one little piece of audio gets corrupted?
    This has happened a couple times just like this...I'm halfway through posting a message on this topic and it self-corrects, but then when it happens again I'm kind of scratching my head again.

    stooby3535 wrote:
    After further troubleshooting I've realized that the suspicious audio file that prevents the project file from opening is actually not corrupted itself. I can still play the audio file in other media software like Quicktime, etc. with no problem.
    This leads me to believe the problem opening the project file lies solely with the corrupted 'documentData' file.
    Does anyone have any ideas about how I could somehow open this project file and delete the reference of the troublesome audio file from the project's audio bin?
    Well... it really sounds like the project itself is corrupted, that's one of the reasons all project files won't load from a certain point on.
    Try this.
    Reboot the Mac.
    Open the Applications folder and boot Logic from it's icon.
    As soon as the Logic Logo/graphic window appears on the screen hold down the control key. You will see a message pop up that says something like "Launch the Core Audio Driver" there will be yes/no choice available... select NO.
    Go to the File menu and selct "open" go find your project file and see if it will open. If it does.. delete the audio file in question... however.. I would also look at any plugins you recently installed and are possibly using in this project...this sounds more like a plugin problem rather than an audio file problem, but that's just a gut feeling.
    Anyway, if it opens delete whatever you suspect and save under a different name.
    Reboot Logic and see if it can load the project.
