Cubase user thinking of Logic

Are y'all happy with Logic Pro?
Seriously, I just wanna hear some Logic thoughts from users.
I do a great deal of straight audio editing with crossfades, etc. I've been doing okay with Cubase but am tiring of some of the workflow aspects of Cubase. Plus, I'm on a Mac and will always be on a Mac. I feel like I should seriously be considering using Logic Pro.

FWIW, I've watched people do crossfades in ProTools and though to myself, "man, I could do that faster in Logic". Maybe it's a case of "what you're used to", but even with Logic's non-specific fade tool I make crossfades in the blink of an eye, and when they're wrong I correct them in a blink of an eye, and I've even had some PT users watch me work and say, "wow, that's amazing". It has nothing to do with my skill or lack thereof -- it's simply about exploiting Logic's capabilities.
So there are some glowing words about Logic from "Mr. #$&^ bug-ridden piece of *#^#!!!". And so, I continue to glow, and I continue to work and make my living exclusively on Logic until I run into something stupid, sloppy, or buggy about the program, and then the gloves come off.

Cubase User, thinking of Switching to Logic 8

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to let everyone know that first off, I have been an avid user of Cubase SX3 for quite some time now, and it is all I have ever known (aside from Reason).
I bought a mac a few years ago and realized that it didn't run as smoothly as I wanted it to with Cubase. I tried taking the jump into Logic 7 last year and test ran it for a few months before i realized it was probably not something I could get used to. It seemed like the transition was too rough and learning curve was steep. Overall, it just seemed counter-intuitive. I wasnt quite sure if it was really because it was much steeper, or i was not comfortable leaving the comfort zone.
Anyhow, to make a long story short. I am interested in giving 8.0 a shot to see if there is a big difference. For the past few years, i have been using Cubase's step designer plugin to randomize midi notes. This is when i have writers block and need some inspiration.
I found that in 7.0, i simply couldnt do this effectively. Is it true that you still have to "build environments"? I found that to be so confusing when i first started. I thought it would be just turning on a midi track and inserting a VST plugin and away I go.
Anyhow, to make a long story short, i assume that logic will run smoother on my mac than my cubase sx3 would. Also i have an unused Mackie C4 that i cannot use with cubase due to incompatibility issues.
Overall, to make a long story short, does anyone know if there is really a huge difference between 8.0 and 7.0? does it have a midi step sequencer that can randomize notes for me? Do i still need to build environments? Is it generally more user friendly than previous versions?

I can say that in comparing to Cubase 4 Logic 8 is a lot easier to use and more intuitive. I had bought Cubase 4 and returned it after 30 days because to me it was just too convoluted to get around in it. My other issues with Cubase 4 had to do with the fact that the plugins available simply didn't work with it, and Steinberg was still holding onto the VST 3.0 spec and therefore vendors could not take advantage of the new features, and everyone needed to update the plugs to 2.4 spec. Don't know how true that is anymore, I've long since stopped looking.
With Logic 8 I gained the fact that I get a one window environment. Before, you had to have multiple windows going at the same time, and to me that was too much clutter while I worked. I got 2 screens because of it, and it was still too distracting. With the single window to do everything I need I can work a lot quicker and hence it is a lot better for me to use it than Logic 7. Now I'm looking to sell both my 23" screens and replace them with one 30" screen.
Naming convention changes in logic also helped me. Funny how a little thing like that can help. The fact that I don't have to go to the arrange window, or the audio window to create new audio objects helps a lot. Another HUGE thing for me, and again it's a time and efficiency thing, is that with ever channel strip you see on the left, you will have 2 faders. One for the channel itself and one for the bus or aux it uses. If there are multiple buses simply click the bus above the fader, and the second fader will change to reflect that setting. Very quick, very visual and intuitive, very Apple. Logic 7 was not very 'apple' like when it came to usability and user interface IMHO.
From a feature standpoint, comping is amazing, I love it. Midi-wise the piano roll is more readable, but I don't do midi only work, so randomization and all those things are not features I can answer on. I just use the midi to lay down basic keys tracks and drums.
Last but not least, most, if not all, available plugins work in Logic 8 (I think there are very few exceptions due to deep changes in how multi-channel plugs are handled in logic, so BFD for example is busted right now), which means no real surprises if you want to use an AU version of a plugin you might already have as VST. Most plugs I think come with both, so there shouldn't be any re-buying for you.
Like Rohan suggested, if you know someone who has a copy of 8, you might be able to install it for a day or so and just try it. Of course I don't know that apple would be happy with us suggesting such a thing, but the ULA does allow for 2 installs of logic 8 as long as they're not running simultaneously (one on desktop and one on laptop), so technically you're not breaking the rules.
You might also want to consider Logic Express. Take a look at the feature sets of both and see if it doesn't cover the things you need. I discovered the express has almost all the features of 8 but less bundled apps. It used to be that express was pretty limited in aux and buses but not anymore, and it includes some of the sample synths. If its price was not the same as my Logic 8 update, I would have likely considered it.

However, in grabbing that link and thinking about your situation, I'm thinking that may not work because it checks off the Captivate movie when it has been selected. You want the check to appear only after a certain score has been reached.
So I'm thinking you would do this using JavaScript and a form. The form element would be the check box. The trick here (as you are probably already aware) is to pass the variable data between pages.
Thinking out loud here: I'm wondering if you would gain anything by using a Frameset?
Wishing I had a neat solution to toss out for you. Unfortunately I don't. Perhaps someone else does! Hope they share it if they do!

Collaborating with Cubase User

Are there any Logic Pro 8 users here collaborating with Cubase users? If so, I could use some tips on how to most efficiently share files. OMF appears only to be useful for transfers between Logic, Digital Performer and ProTools. Is there anything similar for exporting/importing between Logic and Cubase?
I've tried the manual and the new Logic Pro 8 training book from David Nahmani...and I still haven't found what I'm looking for.

Which version of Cubase?
Cubase can import OMF files as of version 2 (or is it 3?)
OMF only deals with audio files, if MIDI tracks are also being used save the MIDI data as a "Format-1" MIDI file and import the MIDI tracks following the OMF import.
Any version of Cubase-SX uses Broadcast Wave format files, these retain an internal time stamp. Logic 8 also does Broadcast Wave format.
I often start projects in Logic, render to Broadcast Wave, import to Cubase (running on an Athlon-64 PC) after importing to Cubase, select all files and then "Move to Original Position" and everything snaps into place.

Cubase user having trouble working with Logic Pro 7

I'm trying to record guitar and keboards using a Motu Ultralite interface to connect to a new MacBook Pro. I've checked all my setup preferences. When I play an instrument, the channel strip monitor indicates the signal is being picked up, but I cannot hear any sound. When I hit the record button, I can hear the click track, but no sound is recorded from my instrument. What am I doing wrong?

Go into Audio Hardware & Prefs and see if your audio is set up to record from your Ultralite. As well, check and see that your audio track's input channel is set to the corresponding input on your unit. Once you arm a track, you should see the meter levels flickering.

Adding user fieds to logical database ADA - solution?

I have problems with adding (by append structure) my user fields (which are added to standard SAP table ANLA) to logical database ADA which is used in AM reporting.
I have found this solution:
Thru SE30 I found, that logical database ADA using view V_ANLAZ (ANLA + ANLZ tables) for selecting data from DB. So I have created append for this view with my added fields to ANLA. Then I added the same append to structure ANLAV of logical database ADA.
My added field are now selected in AM reporting!
Can this solution break some SAP functionality?

User exit for logical databse SDF

I got 2 requirements for tcode FBL3N as below. My problem now is on 2nd requirement.
1. for the output listing - to display the vendor code and name 1 and name 2
we have afew types of vendors; alternate payee, vendor on behalf, one off vendor, cross company vendor etc.
To extract the vendor details, I did some coding in FM ZFI_INTERFACE_00001650 and attach to the BTE
for this, I have added 3 fields in structure RFPOS and RFPOSX; lifnr, name1 and name2
the result: everything is ok and the output has been accepted by user althought got incorrect data when come to multiple vendor in 1 document. the FM will only select the 1st vendor in the document
2. for the selection screen - to add vendor code
we agreed to add in the dynamic selection and for this, I have changed the SDF logical database
i have added field lifnr in structure FAGLFREESEL and has added statement -> tables: FAGLFREESEL in the FBL3N program (based on SNote). At first i plan to copy the FBL3N to Z program, but my user dont want alot of Z program and Z tcode being created
after run the FBL3N, the vendor field appear in the dynamic selection
the problem is: the output is not based on the selected vendor. seems like the program is ignoring the vendor field.
I believe I need to put some selection coding somewhere in the logical database to also check on the additional field (lifnr) but no idea on that. and of course my selection for the vendor must be same as what I did in FM ZFI_INTERFACE_00001650 (1st requirement) since we have alot of vendor types.
somebody please advice or give some idea on how do I proceed with the 2nd requirement.

Enhancement /User Exit for logic setting call date / Horizon

Due toe planning in IP10 we have a horizon set by the system for (eks.) 80%. This is working OK for small planning intervals (i.e. up to 24 mth intervals).
However when intarval exceeds this limit we will set the call date to be maximum 30 days (for instance) ahead of the sceduled start date of the order.
Thus we need a user-defined way to manipulate / set the call date by a user exit (logic in ABAP - or by IMG settings if possible) that differs from the standard SAP setting for this date.
The question is then how we - in best practice - can do so.
Please advice if you need mor information on this issue.

If there are no available user exits you could go for badi's.
To search for a badi, go to se 24 display class cl_exithandler. double click on method get_instance, get a break point on case statement. execute and start the required transaction in new session. look for variable exit_name. It would show the available badi's.

Just open the Server start Script (<DOMAIN_HOME>\bin\startWebLogic.cmd) and then set the following JAVA_OPTION There like :

Hello, i am desperately trying to get logic to awknoledge my guitar. I am using a scarlet audio interface and have all the software ( i think) and logic is recognising the audio interface but no guitar is coming through.

I am using the scarlett 2i2 and i have my guitar plugged into that which is plugged into my mac book pro via usb. Logic is recognizing my 2i2 (i believe i have all the software downloaded, although i didnt use the disc provided i downloaded it from the internet) and my mac book is recognizing that the guitar is playing. if i go into preferences, then go to sound, input, i can see that it knows the guitar is plugged in. how come i cant get logic to read my guitar?

I think my Logic Board has gone POOF!

For anyone who saw my post last week about upgrades to my Digital Audio Power Mac G4, it's now taken a turn for the worse...
A few days ago, after booting my OS 9 HD, i found that i couldn't get any audio from it. The machine would chime on startup but would not make any noise afterwards. Changing the volume, trying the Alert Sounds, selecting Outputs, nothing would make sound...
At first i thought it was a problem with the drive so i backed up everything of import (mostly old games) and wiped/reinstalled OS 9 on the drive. Since then ive not been able to boot the OS 9 drive. Its recognised on the OS X drive as a bootable disk but whenever i try to boot it, it just goes back to booting the OS X drive.
Then this morning, i thought id try the Apple Hardware Test disc that came with the G4 software. After running that it stopped half way through saying there was a problem with the Logic Board . Firstly i tried putting another processor in (i recently swapped out my Sonnet Encore ST 1GHz for a Encore ST 1.4 GHz, the 1GHz came with its own fan and heatsink where the 1.4GHz relies on using the heatsink of the standard processor. I was concerned that the processor might have overheated and cause some big problem!) But that made no difference. After a few attempts at it the computer now will not boot at all. Power goes to it (the main fan starts up, the CPU fan attached to the heatsink starts up, and the red light on the Logic Board comes on) but it won't chime or do anything else, the Hardware Test disc is still in the optical drive too!
The only thing i can think of at this stage is the Logic Board since the problems have gradually gotten worse, starting with lack of audio then progressing to not working at all...
Anyone got any knowledge or thoughts that might help me?

it is a bit, but i cant say anything more than what AHT tells me...
the original code was something like ERROR_CODE>>>>>>>ERROR_CODE>>>>scc_/3/7 or something like that, it didn't really make it clear...
BUT i ran the test yesturday on the system and it now seems to have sorted itself out. I ran the extended test twice and both times it said there was nothing wrong with the system! Very Odd!
So that problem seems to be sorted, but the OS 9 one remains...
I gave it another go yesturday too with the install. I checked the drive by trying to boot the OS X Tiger retail disc that i have, that booted up fine, so its clearly not the optical drives that are the problem. The computer just wont boot the OS 9 disc. I tried the disc in a few other machines (a Beige PM G3, a PowerBook G3 and an iBook G3) all of these machines can boot from the disc, so i dont see how it could be the disc either.
I also discovered that DA Power Macs are only compatible with 9.2.1 or higher, so i initially thought "ahh that might be why its not working, the version of 9 ive got on the HD is 9.0.4!" so i ran the rest of the updates to bring it up to 9.2.2. Alas it didn't make a shred of difference . Ive tried re-blessing the System Folder, unplugging the OS X drive so the OS 9 one is the only visible drive. Each time i do it just loads up with the smiley folder/question mark icon that normally means it cant find a System Folder...
What im trying now is running a full install/update to 9.2.2 on the Beige G3 and, if that works, swap the drives around to see if itll boot that HD.
Its all OS 9 problems from hereonin it seems...
