CUCM 8.6 upgrade to 9.1(2)

Hello all,
I've done some 8.5 upgrades to 9.1 so I'm quite familiar with the refresh upgrade process and the additional server downtime vs. say and 8 to 8.5.
On reading the upgrade guide for CUCM 9.1(1), I stumbled across this line on page 5 -
"You cannot install upgrade software on your node while the system continues to operate."
In the past when doing an Linux to Linux upgrade without a refresh required this certainly wasn't the case. You can't make changes and EM should be turned off but the upgrade was always going on in the background and a switch version was run when complete.
Has this changed?
Can someone chime in who has done a 8.6 to 9.1(x) upgrade on this?
I've got a really tight outage/downtime window to get a cluster upgraded and with 2 servers still on MCS, I don't think I can do it if I can't get a change freeze in place and get the Pub upgraded without taking it down. Having to start and finish the Pub, subs and the physicals in the window might not be possible even with a parallel upgrade.
Thanks
Jon

Hi Jon,
+5 to my friend Aman for his good notes here :)
This has NOT changed....here is the note from the upgrade guide;
Linux to Linux (L2) upgrade
There is very little server downtime during an L2 upgrade.
An L2 upgrade is accomplished by installing the new software release in the inactive
partition while the node continues to run and operate on the existing software
in the active partition.
The software releases are switched on reboot. The reboot can be either automatic,
after the new software release is installed, or initiated manually at a later time through
an administrator command. Some examples of an L2 upgrade are upgrades from
Release 6.1(3) to 7.1(5), from 7.1(2) to 8.0(3), or from 8.6(1) to 9.1(1).

  • CUCM/Unity/Presence Upgrade from 8.6.2 to 9.1

    Hello,
I am planning an upgrade of our UC environment this weekend.  I've been in contact with Cisco Licensing support all week to get the appropriate license for all the services.  For CUCM I have ran the Pre Upgrade License Utility however they keep asking me for the ELM license request.
I've told them several times that ELM gets installed during the upgrade so I cannot provide the information beforehand.  They've escalated my ticket to product management however i'm not sure i'll get a response before my maintenance window.
Can I proceed with the upgrade of CUCM/Unity/Presence and resolve the licensing afterwards?  will it run in eval mode for a while?
Can someone also confirm this is the proper upgrade order?

  • CUCM 7 software upgrade

    Hi      There
We are going to upgrade our CUCM7.1.3 to CUCM 7.1.5. We have 1 pub and 2 subs.
According to the Cisco document, once the software being installed, we just need to switch the version and the system will start and running with the new version.
My question is do we need to install the software on all 3 nodes and then switch the version or install on the pub first, restart the node without switch version, and do the same on the 2 other sub nodes and then switch version?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Install the upgrade file on Publisher first
Once finished on Publisher, install the upgrade file on the subscribers one by one or simultaneously
Do a switch version on the Publisher and let it boot into the new version and allow all the services to come up
Then do a switch version on the subscribers one by one or simultaneously

  • CUCM 10.5 Upgrade

    Hi,
I want to install a cop file and after a few seconds I've this error msg below. I can (of course) reload the CUCM server, but I will find another way to solve this issue....
    Caan you help me ?
    Thanks a lot
    Regards,
    Christian.
Error Message (displayed on both web page and cli) :
(-The resource lock platform.api.network.address is currently locked by process 9801@SCUCM1 (NetMessageDispatch-21).  Please try again later-)

I just had a similar issue trying to upload a new firmware cop file and just tracked down the process and restarted the services associated with that process....
From the CLI run "show process list"
track down the process that is reporting the lock.  In my instance it was process id 32264 which was associated with the DRF.
    28114 /usr/local/Snmpri/bin/sappagt -pkg_conf -log_closefile -aperror -apemanate
    32264 /usr/local/platform/bin/CiscoDRFMaster /usr/local/platform/conf/CiscoDRFMasterCfg.xml
     1900 /usr/bin/perl /usr/local/Snmpri/script/sapp_agent.pl 28114
I then restarted the DRF master and local service.
admin:utils service restart Cisco DRF Master
admin:utils service restart Cisco DRF Local
Then I retried my firmware upgrade with no issues.

  • CUCM Maint Release Upgrade

    Hello,
Can anybody advice how my customer can upgrade its CUCM's maintenance release from 6.0(x) to 6.1(x) ?
It is an existing implementation and the customer has not ordered CON-ESW-* SKUs previously ?

    Hi Tobivan,
No worries my friend, this is my fault for not reading carefully :) In your first post you mentioned upgrading to 6.1(x) and I assumed (I know!) you meant 6.1(2). You **can do the upgrade you were actually talking about with the method you referred to as well. This was CCM 6.0(1a) to 6.1(1). This is shown below.
Use the iso files mentioned in the "Upgrading from Cisco Unified Communications Manager Release 6.0(1a) or 6.1(1a) to Release 6.1(1b) Using the UCSInstall File" section for upgrades from 6.0(1a) or 6.1(1a) to 6.1(1b) only.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/rel_notes/6_1_1/cucm-rel_note-611b.html#wp321829
I wrongly was still talking about the upgrade path from 6.0(1a) to 6.1(2) which is not supported using the ISO Files.
***Caution: Use the ISO files that are mentioned in the "Upgrading from Cisco Unified Communications Manager Release 6.0.(1a) or higher to Release 6.1(2) by Using the UCSInstall File" section for upgrades from ***6.1(1x)only.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/rel_notes/6_1_2/cucm-rel_note-612.html#wp396032
Hope this helps! Sorry about that.
    Rob
PS: I would still think about going to 6.1(2) as this is a very good, stable build.

  • CUCM 8.6 upgrade path

What is the stable version of the new CUCM 10.0 or 10.5?
Can you upgrade direct from 8.6 to 10.0/10.5?
We are currently running 8.6 on IBM blade center, is Cisco going to require me to upgrade to 10 on UCS?

I personally prefer 10.5(2), as to upgrade paths, the 10.x documentation covers the possible upgrade paths, requirements, COP files, and changes to the VM that are required.
You need to fully read the RNs for target version, upgrade guide (same for 10.x) and new and changed doc for all the info on the process and what it takes to be successful. If you haven't reviewed any of those, that would be your first step.
We only require virtualization on 10.x+, as long as your server meets the requirements, it will be supported.

  • CUCM 6.0 upgrade

I am currently running CCM4.3 on a WIN2003 OS. Is there a version of CUCM6.x that will support Windows or is it a Linux only.
I have a copy of CUCM 5. and 6.0 assuming when I received these they would run on windows. The install CDs I've received are Linux only.

    Hi Daniel,
Just to add a note to the good info from Brandon. The word on the street is that CCM 7.x will be available in Windows or Linux :)

  • CUCM 8.6.2 upgrade to CUCM 10.5

    Hi,
I have to upgrade a virtualized CUCM cluster (PUB, SUB1, SUB2, TFTP) version 8.6.2 SU3 to version 10.5.
As per documentation this should be a direct refresh upgrade and no need of PCD to do it.
Based on the documentation the main steps of the upgrade are:
-changing the OS to RHEL 6 (64-bit) and the Network Adapter from "Flexible" to "VMXNET 3” for the VM (shut down the VM and perform the changes)
    -run ciscocm.version3-keys.cop.sgn.
    -run ciscocm.free_common_space_v1.1.cop.sgn
-run the 10.5 ugrade file in following order: PUB, TFTP, SUB1, SUB2
The existing 8.6.2 OVA, 7500 users is using 2 vCPU and 80GB for each vdisk (total of 160GB).
The 10.5 OVA, 7500 users requires 1 vCPU and 110GB for the vdisk.
Does anybody know if I have to run the ciscocm.free_common_space_v1.1.cop.sgn to increase the space to 110GB on each vdisk  (even if the total size is 160GB on 2 vdisks which is more then 110GB required on 10.5 OVA)?
Cisco engineer said that this is not possible as well that I can not change the OS to RHEL 6 (64-bit) on the existing server/VM (ESXi 4.1 U3.
He recommends to create a new VM using the new OVA and use the DRS and restore process for performing the upgrade.
    Any input/advise will be appreciated!
    Thanks.

The success to any upgrade is planning. The customer type bank or not doesn't not really matter. What is crucial is your willingness to do due diligence to  make this as smooth as possible..
Here are the things you  need to do in the order described
    1. Read your documentation. Very crucial. CUCM10.5 is a major change on all others.
You need to start by reviewing the upgrade guide, release notes, and new and changed documentation for all the steps and considerations you need to take into account for this upgrade.
NB: The upgrade guide for IM and P is merged with that of CUCM and here is the link for it..
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/upgrade/10_0_1/CUCM_BK_U4214F9D_00_upgrade-guide-cucm-100.html
    Release notes found here:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/rel_notes/10_5_1/CUCM_BK_CE15D2A0_00_cucm-release-notes-1051.html
    2. Plan for your license migration. Usually this involves two steps
    a. Use cisco LCU (license count utility tool) to generate license report on your existing cluster. This can be downloaded from cco.filename is LCUZIP-Ver9.1.2.zip
Ensure that you install any unsed DLU and license PAKS on your cluster before you run this..
    b. Next email this file obtained from lcu (this is a csv file) tool cisco licensing team [email protected]. This will confirm that your service contracts is in order prior to requesting new licenses for 10.5
    c. Login in Prime License Manager after successfully migrated from 8.6 to 10.5
Use the following procedure to generate a license request.
Log in to Cisco Prime License Manager.
From the Licenses > Fulfillment page, select Generate License Request from the drop-down list under
    Other Fulfillment Options.
The License Request and Next Steps window appears. Copy the selected text to your clipboard or click save it to a file on your PC and send to [email protected] to get permanent licenses
    3. Document the steps you will  use for the upgrades. You can send a draft here and I will be happy to review this with you.
Ensure that you write down step by step what you will do on the day. The upgrade guide should be used to write down what you will do on the day. This is a very long upgrade, hence you need to document in detail what you will be doing.
    4. Contact the relevant team to get your ESW/UCSS contract numbers. You need this to login to PUT to download your media. I was doing an upgrade recently and realised that the customers ESW contract has expired..So this is crucial.
    Upgrade tasks
PCD is your best bet. Install PCD on your Esxi host. Just create a new VM for it. It makes things much easier for you..If you don't have spare capacity to create new VM then do it manually
    5. Before you begin..Take a back up of your cluster.
    6. VM machine sizing.
Please refer to cucm10.5 ova readme file, found on CCO. Depending on the OVA template you used for your cucm8.6, you may need to change the vm setings prior to upgrade. This is because the disk size and cpu requirements is different for cucm10.5 on some ova templates.
6a. You will need to change the vm adapter settings on your VM. This is documented in the cucm10.5 ova. Your best option is to use esxi powercli. You can download this from VMware website provided you have a valid service contract.
6b. You will need to change your guest operating system to RHEL6. This is also documented in the 10. 5 OVA
    7. If your 8.6 cluster is running on VM at the moment, then just do a direct upgrade to 10.5.
NB: before you upgrade you will need to install the ff cop file on all the servers in the cluster
    ciscocm.version3-keys.cop.sgn
After this upgrade your cluster starting with cucm. The upgrade guide will tell you the order of the upgrade..
    7. Once upgrade is completed, perform the post upgrade tasks.
    8. Develop a detailed test plan. Ensure all critical component of your customer is covered in the test plan. Test features that are critical to them
    9. Finally, ensure your CV is updated. In case you need to look for another job if everything breaks: (lol)
    Answer to your questions:
"As per what I see, an easy option would be to create a new virtual machine and use a DRS? but, would it work if I create the DRS on CUCM 8.6 and use it on 10.5?"
---You may create a new VM or adjust VM settings as I already discussed. If you want to create a new VM, then you will create VM with cucm10.5 ova, install cucm 10.5 on it.
You will then upgrade your current 8.6 to 10.5, take a DRS back up and go and do a DRS restore on the new 10.5 you have installed on the new VM. You cant restore 8.6 to 10.5.
"What happens to presence server? I understand I have to upgrade it too but, will the configuration be transferred to CUCM 10.5 (I mean, services associated with the menus that originally were on presence 8.6)?"
---Yes IM and P needs to match the cucm version. Yes the configuration will be transferred. You don't need to do anything. Please read the upgrade guide carefully.
"If all of the apps are on 8.6, do we need to upgrade everything to 10.5 at the same window?"
---For CUCM and IM and P, yes you have to upgrade them at the same time. The versions must match. It is advisable that you have unity connection on same version too, but not critical. I believe 8.6 unity connection will work with cucm10.5 ( I haven't checked this, so confirm it yourself)
The upgrade is a refresh upgrade. So it does take a long time and there are several reboots. The publisher is the one that takes the longest amount of time. The subscriber is about half the time it takes for the Pub to upgrade. You should be fine with a weekend maintenance widow. Friday evening to Sunday.
"If upgrade fails, can I still go back to 8.6?" Yes as long as you do not use the "free common space cop file" This is discussed in the upgrade guide as well.
It looks daunting, but if you do your home work, you will be fine and we are here to help and assist you all the way

  • CUCM, IMP and CUC upgrade from version 9.1.1 (on VMWare) to version 10.5 (on VMWare)

    Hello,
I have to perform a Refresh Upgrade to 10.5 for a client who has the following UC apps on a virtual environment:
    CUCM version 9.1.1
    IM and Presence version 9.1.1
    CUC (Unity Connection)  version 9.1.1
    A. I see on the CUC Upgrade document below:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/connection/10x/upgrade/guide/10xcucrugx.pdf
P.39 --> Change Guest Operating System after CUC Upgrade to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (64-bit). But nothing about the Network Adapter.
    B. I see on the CUCM 10.0 Upgrade Guide:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/upgrade/10_0_1/CUCM_BK_U4214F9D_00_upgrade-guide-cucm-100.pdf
    Page. 44:
Step 3: Change the configuration of the VM as needed (Guest OS, ...) Step 4: Modify the Network Adapter to use VMXNET 3 Adapter type as steps before the CUCM upgrade.
    My questions would be:
    1. Do I need to change the Network Adapter for CUC as well? If yes, should this be done before upgrade or after?
    2. What would be the implication of not changing the Network Adapter from "Flexible" to VMXNET3?

    Hi csrlime,
Not sure about future issues by remaining on the flexible adapter but best practice suggests going with what the OVA requires.  I performed a refresh upgrade from 8.5 to 10.5 in a virtualized environment.  For CUCM and CUC I changed the Network Adapter before beginning the upgrade.  The steps I took to make the network adapter change were:
    1.  Download a copy of the vmx file from the server(s) you are upgrading to your local machine.
    2.  Create a back up of that file incase you need to restore it in the future.  From cmd prompt in the same folder as the download .vmx.  copy "<virtual_machine_name>.vmx"
then run the following from you cmd prompt
    copy "virtual_machine_namet.vmx" temp_file.vmx
    findstr /V /R "^ethernet0.virutalDev.*" temp_file.vmx > "virtual_machine_name.vmx"
    echo ethernet0.virtualDev = "vmxnet3" >> "virtual_machine_name.vmx"
Upload the edited vmx file to your the datastore which will replace the current.   Then remove the vm from inventory and then add it back.  Check your setting and the network adapter should be changed to vmxnet3 now.
Steps are from the Read Me file as an option to change it.  I don't why you can't make this change during a maint window.

  • CUCM upgrade from 7.1.5 to 10.5.1.10000-7

Is it possible to do the migration from 7.1.5 to 10.5.1.10000-7 which we are doing for jump upgrade from 7.1.5 to 9.1.2.
The reason why I preferred because this jump upgrade we can achieve in isolated network.
In that case can anybody please help to get specific document for that. Kindly have a look on this case.

  • Migrating from CUCM 8.6 to CUCM 10.0 - Do I have to upgrade presence as well?

    Hello Raees,
I've got a question regarding the Migration from CUCM 8.6 to 1.0, I went through the below "Ask the Expert" article.
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/12103966/ask-expert-cisco-unified-communications-manager-cucm-version-100
My question is, the CUCM 10.0 upgrade mentions the following on page 22
"Refresh upgrade of Unified Communications Manager nodes only
Complete the high-level tasks listed in this section when you want to perform a refresh upgrade of only the
Unified Communications Manager nodes in your network. When you upgrade Unified Communications
Manager nodes without upgrading IM and Presence nodes, ensure that the installed version of the IM and
Presence Service is compatible with the new version of the Unified Communications Manager software."
I would only like to Upgrade the CUCM nodes but the client is using Presence 8.6 as well, would I have to upgrade Presence 8.6 to something else as well or can I just upgrade to CUCM 10.0 and the presence 8.6 would work with it, if I have to upgrade Presence as well then what version of Presence would I have to upgrade to and for the "Refresh Upgrade for Presence" can you mention the SKU that I got to get off the Product Upgrade Tool.
Since it's going to be a Refresh Upgrade for CUCM from 8.6 to 10.0 can you as well provide me with the SKU for the upgrade that I got to purchase, I can see two of them as follows:
    UCM-10.X-SW-K9-XU=
CUCM Software Version 10.X for PUT Only, Export Unrestricted
    UCM-10.X-SW-K9=
CUCM Software Version 10.X for PUT Only
    Thanks
    Aamer

Thank you for the reply Chris,
I have a few more questions with regards to what you mentioned in your reply, I'd be glad if you could clarify:
I have not dealt with IMP before...
    1) is it like a plugin that runs on CUCM instead of a full fledged server or is it a stand alone server like CUPS (just renamed/rebranded).... I have till date been dealing with CUPS as a stand alone server that integrates with CUCM via the CUCM -> System-> Application Server Option.
    2) If it's a plug-in then how would the upgrade be done from the CUPS Stand Alone to this IMP that runs within the CUCM Server or would it be a fresh installation or some activation of services within CUCM... and if it's a stand alone server then what Upgrade Image do I need to upgrade CUPS 8.6.4 to IMP 10.0 or 10.5.
I'm sorry but the upgrade path for CUPS 8.6.4 to IMP 10.0/10.5 is not clear for me, could you help me understand the migration for CUPS 8.6.4 to IMP 10.0/10.5..... could you as well advise any documentation that shows detailed steps for the upgrade from CUPS 8.6.4 to IMP 10.0/10.5... the CUCM upgrade is clear to me from the Upgrade Guide.
    Thank you
    Aamer

  • License questions regarding CUCM/CUC upgrade from 9.1.2 to 10.5.2

    Hi All,
I am set to upgrade CUCM/CUC cluster and have read the upgrade guides multiple times, just need some input from folks who've actuall done and survived the ordeal.
I have already installed a stand-alone PLM 10.5 and just need an idea what to expect with license migration once the CUCM/CUC has hurdled through the upgrade.
After CUCM/CUC has upgraded to 10.5, can I run the migrate license utility via e-fulfillment and UC instance license will automatically/electronically update its license. And if so, how long does this process take.
Or do I need to send a request to cisco licensing support via the generated request form from migrate licenses tool. Also how long does this process take.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
are u using standalone or co-resident ELM.Just refer the link
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/plm/10_5_1/releasenotes/CUCM_BK_P64D2D8C_00_plm-rn-1051/CUCM_BK_P64D2D8C_00_plm-rn-1051_chapter_00.html
For a standalone Enterprise License Manager deployment, use the Prime License Manager ISO:
To upgrade to Cisco Prime License Manager Release 10.5(1), use the following ISO file: CiscoPrimeLM_64bitLnx_10.5.1.XXXXX-XX.sgn.iso.
Where: X represents the specific branch and build number.
For a co-resident Enterprise License Manager deployment, Enterprise License Manager is upgraded to Cisco Prime License Manager along with your Unified Communications product upgrade.
You can upgrade a standalone Enterprise License Manager Release 9.1(2) deployment to a standalone Cisco Prime License Manager Release 10.x deployment.
For co-resident deployments, you can upgrade Enterprise License Manager Release 9.1 to Cisco Prime License Manager Release 10.x with Release 10.x of a Unified Communications application (Cisco Unity Connection or Cisco Unified Communications Manager) upgrade.

  • ELM shows insufficient licenses after CUCM upgrade from 9 to 10.0.1

    Hi All,
I just finished upgrading cucm 9 to cucm 10.0.1. Upgrade completed successfully, but elm now shows insufficient license message.
This is a Vmware installation BTW, I doubt that it matters the CUCM 901 worked fine with its ELM.
The ELM is coresident with CUCM. I though that upgrading CUCM will upgrade ELM too, but the Dashboard says to upgrade to latest version of ELM.
When I ordered upgrade through UCSS and downloaded all the files that were included in this upgrade order, one of the files was CiscoPrimeLM_64bitLnx_10.0.1.10000-19.sgn.iso.
I tried to use CUCM OS administration with this file to upgrade ELM, but OS Administration doesn't recognize it as a valid file.
The file that I used for CUCM upgrade was: UCSInstall_UCOS_10.0.1.10000-24.sgn.iso
So at this point I'm not sure whether ELM needs to be upgraded or I need new licenses for CUCM version 10.
    Thanks

Upgrading co-res CUCM should have upgraded your ELM as well.  It should now show as Prime License Manager when you log in.  I'm guessing you just don't have any CUWL 10.x licenses installed.  Can you attach a screenshot of the License Usage page in PLM?
You may need to email [email protected] to move your 9.x licensing to 10.x licenses.

  • Upgrade Order - CUCM, CUC, & CUP

Customer has a virtual CUCM, CUC & CUP environment running on 2 hosts in the same chassis.  CUC & CUP are misbehaving due to known CPU utilization bugs and will be upgraded to latest SU.  Question is what to upgrade first?  CUC is the most unstable, so upgrading it first was my initial thought, then CUP and CUCM last.  Is there any reason to change this order of updates?
    CUCM 8.6(2a)SU2     update to 8.6(2a)SU5
    CUC 8.6(2a)SU3        update to 8.6(2a)SU5
    CUP 8.6(5)                 update to 8.6(5)SU3
    I appreciate it,
    Beau

You can upgrade CUCM or CUC in either order based on the versions you provided.  CUP should be upgraded after CUCM has been upgraded.
