CUDA hardware in a mac pro

I am considering buying an "nvidia gtx-285"card for my 2008 mac pro. I already own a "NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3" card. I have a bunch of questions about how worthwhile this upgrade would be:
1. Would the cuda technology give me the ability to playback Canon 7d (50mps avchd footage) smoothly in CS4? With my current graphics card CS4 chokes on it, and I am exporting mpeg 2 proxy files to edit with.
2. Can others tell me their experience with CS5, a cuda card, and working with high bitrate avchd footage?
3. What should I do with my old card? Would both fit in my mac pro? Would having the older one in there too disable the use of cuda technology in Premiere? Could I tell Premiere to only use the cuda card and ignore the other one?

No, GPU acceleration is a feature of CS5, not CS4.  Also check to make sure your Mac tower would support it.  You need a Mac Pro that is a 3.1 or 4.1.  I have a 2008 Mac Pro and if you look in the System Profiler, it is a 2.1, which means it won't support a CUDA enabled nvidia graphics card.
2. Can others tell me their experience with CS5, a cuda card, and working with high bitrate avchd footage?
It works great.  the GPU accelerates the effects, not the decoding of the video.  If you put CS5 on your existing Mac Pro, you'll get two thirds of the Mercury Playback engine without the GPU.  Because CS5 is native 64 bit you will see a big difference in the performance.

  • Which CUDA card for a Mac Pro?

I've recently started using Premiere Pro CS6. My current setup does not make use of the Mercury playback engine.
Can anyone recommend an appropriate CUDA graphics card that would allow this?
Ideally I don't want to spend more than £300.
Here is a breakdown of my setup:
    Mac Pro 4,1:
    2 x 2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (2 processors, 8 cores)
    32GB RAM (DDR3 1066Mhz)
ATI Radeon HD 4870 (512MB VRAM)
Black Magic Decklink HD Extreme 3D+
    x4 3TB 7200rpm Internal hard drives (i.e. 1 root drive and x3 for footage)
OS X Version 10.8 Mountain Lion
    Thanks.

Ok, everything went in/installed ok. A couple of worrying moments when initially I couldn't work out how to release the old graphics card... thank you Apple for putting a release button on the fan! Then the text editor hung whilst adding my new card to Premiere's Cuda list. But a force quit solved that and the settings held.
But when I finally rebooted and opened up Premiere, sure enough the Mercury GPU hardware option was there in the Playback settings.
So excellent news...... yes almost. I've been playing around with putting various effects on clips and trying to spot the difference, which should be obvious, right? Well it's not. So far I haven't found anything that it's made a difference on. I've tried switching the GPU option on and off and applying the same cluster of effects to duplicate clips and the render times are the same, as is the playback smoothness in the programme monitor (ie the same degree of jitter before a render).
In fact worse than that in the 30 mins or so I've been playing around Premiere has crashed twice when saving/closing the project. Possibly this is down to all the preview files being deleted each time I switch the MPE from GPU to software only (and vice versa), but who knows.
I guess I need to spend more time with it set only to GPU to ensure it's stable. But can anyone suggest a test I can do where I can definitely see a difference the GPU option is making vs. software only?

  • Cuda/OpenCL card for Mac Pro

I bought my Mac Pro a little too soon (early 2008, so EFI32)
This is the one I have:
    8-core processing
Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5300 series processors
    Intel Core microarchitecture
8MB of L2 cache per processor (16MB total; each pair of cores shares 4MB)

I am looking for a video card for video editing/color correcting.  For Assimilate Scratch and Davinci Resolve I need a card that does CUDA.  For Final Cut Pro X I need one that does Open CL.
The ones I really need (Quadro 4000, etc) won't work with a 2,1 Mac Pro with EFI32.
Anyone have an idea of a video card that does CUDA and Open CL that will work with this older Mac Pro?  Obviously I need a new Mac Pro, but I'm still hoping that Apple will market a new Mac Pro with Thunderbolt so I'm holding out for that; so I don't want to spend cash on an updated (post 2008) Mac for now.
Two other questions, what is "name" of the process or in this Mac? Nehalem? Woodcrest?
The card I had purchased for Final Cut Pro X (a Geforce 8800 GT) seems to have died. I've tried it in two different slots with no results. Any other ways to test a card?

I want to say, you just have to be kidding!

  • Enable Hardware Virtualization On Mac Pro 8 Core (Early 2008)

    Hi,
Has anyone has any success enabling the Intel VT-X feature on the Xeons on the Mac Pro (Early 2008, 8 core Xeon)? The VMWare ISO indicates that its turned off on all cores, and NOT locked. VMWare confirms that its not enabled, by not allowing me to boot a 64bit guest OS.
Has anyone had any success? ive got the latest EFI BIOS, hoping that it would fix it (like a BIOS upgrade did aparently for the Mac Mini).
As the feature bit is not locked, maybe there is a way of doing it in software (normally the BIOS turns the feature on or off, then locks it, the lock holding until the next cold boot). We would need ring0 access to the processor.
Alternatively, there is a EFI exe floating around that aparently enabled it for the Mac Mini (on old firmware with the bug).
Whats the best way to report this to Apple? do they have a history of fixing user-reported issues?
    Thanks
    George

Interestng about firmware. Sounds odd to have cpu from different batches.

One security expert uses a Mac Pro and runs multiple VMs was interviewed and up on Tom's Hardware - there have been changes since 2006 (1st gen Mac Pro) compared to even 2008. Probably nothing to help but VT -d and other stuff was news to me.

  • How to run Apple Hardware Test on Mac Pro with ML preinstalled?

I have Mac Pro 5.1 (2012) which came with Mountain Lion preinstalled. It didn't have install DVDs. How do I run AHD? Restarting with D, or command+D, or option+D didn't work. It would just restart the OS. And Mac Pro didn't support Internet AHD eather.

Thank you for your reply, Carolyn.
I read this article. None of those applied to my case:
my Mac Pro came before 2013 and it doesn't have Apple Diagnostics  built into it,
it doesn't have Apple Hardware Test built into it,
and my Mac Pro came with Mountain Lion preinstalled and it did not have system software disc or USB flash drive.
Restarting while holding down the D key simply doesn't work it just reboot back to the desktop.

  • Hardware for Mac Pro early 2008

    Hi there
We have very old Macs at our university. We will renew them next year, however we need to hook up our magnificent video monitors to Premiere Pro CC. There is only DVI and FireWire signal out, no thunderbolt. Inputs on the monitor are HD SDI and HDMI.
I´m sure there must be Hardware for this Mac Pro (2008) in order to connect to monitor digitally. I´m sure there were options when Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 was the current version back in 2008. Any ideas?
    Jon

I have already connected two monitors via a DVI “hub”. So they are up and running fine.
The hub don´t have any more outputs of any kind. Also I´m not sure if the quality would be good enough for the monitor output.
Now I also realised that there is no HDMI input on the monitor, only HD SDI.
Please look at photo here for info on my current graphics card.
    Best,
    Jon

  • New Mac Pro (6 core, D700, 32GB), Mavericks 10.9.4, dragging and scrolling lag, overall system bugginess

Since upgrading to 10.9.4 i've been beset with numerous bugs and general odd system behavior.
Previous to this update I had experience lag when using my Wacom Intuos 4 tablet. For example when doing a preview render in Maya the tablet would become unresponsive and laggy. This never occurred on my old Mac Pro 2008.
I noticed there was an update to the Wacom Drivers (6.3.8-2) so I did the update. After updating I've been experiencing dramatically slow screen redraw. So whenever I drag a window or scroll, the image stutters, flickers and lags as it tries to redraw to keep up with mouse position. This makes it impossible to use the computer.
I uninstalled the Wacom drivers and the lag and redraw errors persist. I looked at Activity Monitor to if it was some other system resource like Spotlight that was momentarily hogging resources. The only thing I notice is that the dreaded "kernel_task" seems to be using a lot of ram (1.46 GB) and cpu time (usually at the top of the list). Also, "com.apple.IconServicesAgent" seems to be using a lot of CPU time (usually #2 in the list).
I'm at a loss as to what to do about this other than re-install everything from scratch. I've read through numerous forum threads about the kernel_task issue but nothing seems to apply to the New Mac Pro.
Hopefully someone has some experience with these issues and some good advice for fixes.
    Jonathan

  • 2008 Mac Pro Freeze/Shutdown/Slow Errors

I have a 2008 Mac Pro. I have had it since it was brand new and it has been a lemon from the very beginning. I already had the logic board replaced twice under Apple Care. I am really hoping it is not a failing logic board again. I know this generation of Mac Pro's are famous for issues.
The symptoms started about three weeks ago. At first it would suddenly just randomly restart while I was just surfing the web. No warning, no freeze, just a restart. Back then this would only happen about every 2 or 3 days. Recently the problems have increases in frequency to sometime 2 or 3 times a day.
More recent symptoms include freezing but it won't restart itself. The cursor is just stick in place on screen so I have to manually hit power button to restart. Another symptom I have noticed was it became slow as molasses. I opened activity monitor but the CPU was not overloaded and ram wasn't close to being full either. I was not rendering video simply surfing.
Here is what I have done so far. Zapped Pram multiple times. I have restarted and used Disk Utility to repair all disks. I have unplugged all cables and power to reset SMC several times. Under system information Diagnostics tests passed. Ram all seems ok. Hard drives smart status all report fine. About a year ago I had issues as well but that was easier to diagnose. It was a bad video card and before my computer would crash the monitor would get screen artifacts. This time I don't have a clue what is causing the problem.
I will be glad to provide any and all info you ask for to help me solve the problem. Crash logs, any and all specs, apps installed, just ask and I will provide the info if you can help me narrow down the issue. My next steps were going to be to open it up and clean out dust, remove and reinstall hard drives and ram because I know sometimes they just don't connect properly for some reason perhaps because computer gets jostled. I was also considering reinstalling Mavericks but it seems more like a hardware issue to me. Thanks for any and all help. I am self-employed and depend on my Mac Pro for my livelihood so really need this problem solved ASAP.

The RAM is less than 3 years old. I hit power button with SMC. Just downloaded Etrecheck. Your link didn't work but this one did http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
I have already gone into my User control log in items and removed two log in items with yellow exclamation marks that I think are the ones highlighted in red in the log below.
A UPS is simply not an option right now nor is a SSD. My primary drive is less than a year old. If I can provide any other details let me know.
I know this is almost certainly not malware related but running Clamware scan as a last resort which is why you see that using most CPU right now.

  • Why can´t I upgrade my Mac Pro to OS Mountain Lion?

Being a person with great interest in photography, video and moviemaking I made a big personal investment a couple of years ago in buying what I thought was the best available computer on the market for multimedia projects for the time being, that is a well equiped Mac Pro (Processor 2x3 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with Memory 8 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 FB-DIMM). After that I also upgraded my Mac Pro with a better graphic card (ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB) and extra HDD´s Up till now there has been no problem to upgrade my computer to every new realesed OS software  (latest OS X Lion 10.7.04) from Apple, but when recently trying to download the latest version of OSX, that is Mountain Lion, this posibility seems to have come to an endpoint! When I try to upgrade to Mountain Lion, I get the message that this is not possible with my Mac Pro (in which I for sure totally up til now have invested at least 70-80 000 swedish kronor (10 - 12 000 dollars).
Is this really so, and if so, why has Apple in this way seemingly abandoned all those earlier loyal customers over the world who by investing their money in Apple´s Pro line of products like Mac Pro´s, have contributed so much in building the good reputation and economic ground for the development of Apple in becoming such a sucessful company? Even if Mac Pro still is a strong and competive computer for the time being, this discontinuation of softwaresupport for the big stock of sold Mac Pro computers world wide, remarks a crossroad from where in the long run, Mac pro´s will become useless and therefore also worthless in such an extent that heir owners once more have to make investments in new hardware from Apple, taking for granted that they find it still being a value in being trustful to the Apple line of computer products.
While a company as a rule always willl find ways to make investments in new hardware of great quality if this is calculated to increase the income of the company, the sitaution is totally different for all independent and creative people over the world who have a much lower budget for their projects and as a rule get no profit from their work but their personal joy and emotional satisfaction.
Do I really have to through my Mac Pro away (it will probably be impossible to sell it to a worthy price after Apple now has discontinued supporting the development of  it´s OS ) or do I have to buy a new Mac Book Pro with Retina Display and Thunderbolt Interface of latest version in order to feel safe in continuing using Apple´s Pro applications for multimedia projects foor the future with reliable continued support from Apple (and in that case for how long I ask myself), or is there any possibility to upgrade the hardware of my Mac Pro in order to upgrade to latest OS software and still feel being a member of the sanctioned Apple club?
Alternatively, maybe Apple can help all Mac Pro owners to make it possible to upgrade to needed Apple hardware and software line of their Pro applications, and thus continue to support Apple in using and inspire developing their products and Pro market shares as well as continue to spread their good reputation in this area, in supporting these reliable customers in some way, as an example by giving a discount to all Mac Pro owners upgrading to a new computer from Apple.
Maybe this in fact is the first step from Apple in a plan to soon stop selling the model Mac Pro because the latest compact Mac Book Pro´s already has exceeded the old clumpsy Mac Pro´s in function, versatility and potential for future development. If so this Apple´s decision is logic and understandable, but please don´t abondon all customers of Mac Pro´s all over the world  who have been utterly fidele to Apple in helping the Company to spread the good reputation of Apples computers to ordinary people through the years and thus to a great extent have contributed in buildning the necessary market expectations that have made it possible for Apple to develop and sell new products to a continuing growing market by fulfilling and helping ordinary peoples daily needs. I believe that without these earlier pioneers and supporters of Apple´s ever innovative productline, its not taken for sure the Apple Company should have reached this all time incredible height of success we all can witness today...
    Sincerely
    Stefanis
PS/ Me and my family are true Apple customers and supporters in having all together 4 iPhones, 4 iPods, 1 iPad, 1 MacBook, 2 MacBook Pro´s, 1 Mac Pro, 1 Apple TV 2nd gen, 1 Apple TV 3rd gen and a lot of general and Pro Application (among them all iWork programs, Aperture, Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Pro X and Logic Pro).

what a long post....Apple, btw, does not read this stuff, so ranting, raving, and complaining here might make you feel good, but it does no good at all. That being said, I, too have a Mac Pro Quad Core Xeon with 6 gigs of ram and an nVidia 8800 GT graphics card (not as good as yours, alas) and I've had no problems at all with it. Yes, it doesn't have Thunderbolt, but maybe we Mac pro owners will get lucky and someone will come out with an adapter (probably not). No, you probably don't have to throw away your Mac Pro, but if you do, I'll take it, for a small "recycling" fee >:-) That was a joke.  Yes, the Mac Pro's future isn't quite clear, YET. Hopefully that will improve very soon. As for not being able to upgrade to Mountain Lion. Don't worry about that too much, Nobody is forcing you to do that.  Your Mac Pro won't quit working if it isn't installed. From what  I've heard, you should give the new OS a chance, and wait to get it, in case there might be some bugs, or stuff not working with the new OS, which has been known to happen. Yes, we Mac Pro owners don't like being treated like mushrooms-kept in the dark, and being fed......... but Apple is Apple and it will do what it does, and there is nothing you or me can really do to change that. All I can say is....trust, have faith, be patient, go for a walk, do something else to take your mind off of this problem. IF apple decides to drop the Mac Pro for good, and that's a big "IF", I think they will anger a whole bunch of people
which isn't good. However, that hasn't happened...YET. Let us hope that it doesn't

  • Upgrading Mac Pro 3,1 for CS5

We have 2 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 need to update to use Adobe CS5, and I think we may need some hardware/software upgrade to boost the performance and would like to have some suggestion. Here is the list of hardware:
      Model Name:          Mac Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacPro3,1
      Processor Name:          Quad-Core Intel Xeon
      Processor Speed:          2.8 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          2
      Total Number Of Cores:          8
L2 Cache (per processor):          12 MB
      Memory:          10 GB
      Bus Speed:          1.6 GHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MP31.006C.B05
      SMC Version (system):          1.25f4
    OS:
It is currently running 10.5, so the OS should need to upgrade to 10.6 for better security and stability and also feature. I would like to know if running Snow Leopard in native 64-bit kernel will benefit CS5?
    RAM:
Current the RAM is 1GBx6 + 2GBx2, so there is only 2 spare RAM slot left. Perhaps add to 2x4GB or 2x2GB depends on the budget.
    HDD:
Perhaps we will request if WD VelociRaptor or Intel SSD. Since the HDD are loading into the slot so the connector need to be in place. I think the VelociRaptor should able to slide into the slot by mounting to the HDD mount comes with the Mac Pro chassis, but seems most SSD are in 2.5" form factor, and the mount doesn't fit, any suggestion? Thanks.
    Graphic:
Will CS5 leverage the core image or core animation of OSX so a modern card with more memory will render thing faster? Which graphic card upgrade can this Mac Pro use?
Any hints will be appreciated, thank you!

8 DIMMs of course, and depends on budget and work files but 4 x 4GB and 4 x 2GB would get to sweet 24GB RAM.
Yes 64-bit mode has a slight improvement.

  • How to  install OS X Tiger on new Mac Pro

Does anyone why you can´t install OS X Tiger on the new Mac Pro? I bought it recently and it came with Leopard of course but I really need to run Tiger because of many of my plug-ins for Protools costs a fourtune to upgrade...
Is it possible to do it? Workaround anybody..?

Is the hardware in the mac pro all that different than to the one shipped with Tiger???
I don't know all the differences, but iirc, the Graphics card is a big diff.
I have Tiger discs for a mac mini shipped just before 2008, would that work you think?
Can only guess, but no, I don't think it would, all Tiger disks for IntelMacs are Machine specific.
Sorry, can't help with the links, I've just read about attempts & the difficulties.

  • GeForce 7300 GT Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro?? G5?

    Hi,
Just found this on the apple store:
    http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=1643C421&nplm=M A567
"NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro"
Why is it only for mac pro? its PCI express & my g5 is one of the late 2005 models and it has PCI Express so am i wrong in thinking that this should work fine or is it something to do with the new intel architecture?
If i remember correctly i could have chosen this card or a very similar one when i configured my G5.
    Thanks

That card is only for the Mac Pro, as it says.
When you ordered your G5, you had the choice of the nVidia 6600 (or 6600LE), nVidia 7800GT, or the Quadro FX 4500.
The 7800GT that you could have ordered with your G5 is close in performance to the ATi X1900XT that is an option on the Mac Pro. The 7300GT that you're looking at is an entry level card, which the 7800GT definitely is not.
The 7300GT and the X1900XT are both Mac Pro only due to the ROM on the card, which is designed to work with the EFI booting hardware that the Mac Pro uses. The G5s used Open Firmware, which requires a different ROM on the video card. So, even though both your G5 and the Mac Pro are PCI-Express based, these video cards are not compatible.
Now, most PCI-Express cards that you look at for, say, external SATA, will probably work in both the G5 and the Mac Pro. You'd still want to check the specs to be sure, however.
If you're looking for a new video card to replace your (presumably) nVidia 6600, your only real option is the ATi X1900 G5 edition. This is a different card than the X1900XT that's offered for the Mac Pro.

  • Help! Multiple Displays not Working. (Mac Pro late 2013).

    Hardware:
    Late 2013 Mac Pro
Processor: 3.7 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon E5
Memory: 12 GB 1867 MHz DDR ECC
    Graphics: AMD FirePro D300 2048 M8
    Software: OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)
    Displays:
    4 LG Electronics S-Class 25UM64-S 25-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor's
    Display Connection:
6 Moshi Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (4K)
    Issue:
First of all, thank you in advance for taking the time to help!
I just picked up this Mac Pro (as stated above) and I am having quite the time trying to get the monitors to display properly (or at all!)!
Everything is hooked up properly (i'd like to think so), i've run through most of the trouble shooting methods I can think of and have found online... and still, 2 of the 4 displays do not show! The Mac Pro is not recognizing two of them.
I was told that the MacPro could recognize up to 6 Mini DisplayPort to HDMI monitors, however, only 2 are working properly. Is it because of the Moshi Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters? Should I be running MDP to DP cables instead? The monitors support DisplayPort input's, however, they also allow for PIP hence the use of 6 MDP adapters to HDMI. (2 of the monitors are using the built in picture in picture split screen. So 2 HDMI inputs each).
Really pulling my hair on this one.. I figured it would be plug and play.. at least, that's how apple USED to be.
Any ideas?! Am I simply needing to use the MDP to DP cables instead of MDP to HDMI? Please help!
    Thank you!

Mac Pro (Late 2013): Using multiple displays - Apple Support
Can I connect more than 2 DVI or HDMI displays?
Mac Pro supports a total of two DVI or HDMI displays when connected via the built-in HDMI port or using the Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. To connect additional DVI displays, use an active DVI adaptersuch as the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter. You can connect up to six active adapter DVI displays. This requires a powered USB hub since Mac Pro offers four USB ports and you will need six to connect them all.
Thus, use a display port to mini display port cable

  • IMac vs the new Mac Pro for video editing in FCPX?

    Hi.
I am currently using a macbook air for all my editing and rendering of videos in FCPX. The editing process is reasonably smooth when dealing with shorter clips, but when I tried to edit multicam clips, things started to slow down. Also,  the rendering and compression processes are tedious. I am planning to edit and process a much larger number of videos in the next years to come, so I have decided to do a serious upgrade of my system.
For the moment, I am torn between a maxed out iMac 27", which would be the cheapest alternative, and the 6 core Mac Pro or 4 core Mac Pro.
When I look at benchmarks of the new Mac Pro's in Geekbench, the iMac is never very far away in terms of performance.  Does tests like this tell anything about how well the Mac Pro will perform in FCP?   Does the hardware in the Mac Pro have features which makes it superior to the iMac, in other ways than for example the "pure power" of the CPU and GPU?
    Christopher.

FCP X 10.1, Motion 5.1 Updates w/Dual GPU Support (new Mac Pros) (from Thursday)
Apple released Final Cut Pro X 10.1 Thursday with support for Dual GPUs in the new Mac Pro and more.
Long list in the Final Cut Pro X 10.1 Release Notes that also links to info on How to back up important FCP X 10.0.x files before updating. (Today's Apple docs listing also has more related to Final Cut Pro X 10.1.)
Also out today are Compressor 4.1 and Motion 5.1. Full release notes below but here's a clip from the App store Motion 5.1 changes:
Optimized playback and rendering using dual GPUs in the new Mac Pro
FxPlug 3 with custom plug-in interfaces and dual-GPU support
Faster project loading, especially for complex projects
Share directly to YouTube at 4K resolution
    Spanish language localization

Intel Xeon processors are designed to run 24/7 and stay cool and under load.
Mac Pro so far hold up strongly for years, easy to add and upgrade RAM and processor, and maybe, hopefully, even the twin GPUs. Thunderbolt2 for all your projects and storage as well.
6 or 8-cores is going to walk away from iMac which is breathing hard and not designed for constant heat. Haswell was designed to conserve and reduce.
