CUPS corrupt - can't access Print & Fax - Constant Terminal & Console msgs

While trying to get a Windows network printer to work I changed some settings in the CUPS config file (BrowseProtocols all I suspect is the problem).
Now when I try and click Print & Fax in prefs I get the eternal wheel. I can't access localhost:631 (I believe that's the proper port) anymore either.
In terminal, I receive this message about every 6-7 seconds:
Broadcast Message from root@host172.**.**

Dec 10 13:53:46 host172 /usr/sbin/cupsd[303]: Unable to read configuration file

I also get this in Console:

Numbers also will not start anymore which I suspect is linked because it was working fine before I messed with the CUPS config.
Please help!

Amazing, this Web! Thanks muchly, Google. And much gratefulness to the two of you in this thread, one for posting your problem and another for the fix.
On my MacBook, a bum cups.conf file was causing the ten-second throttling problem and that was (mysteriously, at least to me for the last few days) preventing Parallels Desktop from successfully starting up! I went round and round on this until I found the messages on the console and tried going back to the original conf file.
Cheers.

  • Can't access print settings

Hi.  Whenever I save a set of print settings for printing I can no longer access Print Settings again.  I searched the forum and found this response. This works but then the problem represents itself the next time I go to print.  It is rather tedious to reset all my preferences every time I want to print a document.
Mac 10.6.8. I have the latest version of CS5 fully updated. Printing to an Epson 4800.
    Help appreciated.

    It's a corrupted preferences file.
What i got from another thread, is that you have to launch PS while holding down a certain combination of keys (i think it was shift+alt+cmd), and it'll reset your preferences.
    It worked like a charm.
gabevf had the correct answer! I tried it and everything is working fine now!
The combination is indeed shift+alt+cmd and then double-click on the Photoshop app icon.
    Greets!

    32 versus 64 doesn't make a difference.
"I've seen similar issues on httP://feedback.photoshop.com You should maybe post there to report the bug."
Thanks.  I searched there and found what might be a workaround. I think this is simply a bug in CS5. If (as indicated in posts revealed by searching the forum you linked me to) I temporarily change Printer Manages Color to Photoshop Manages Color in the PS window, I can then access Print Settings again to make changes, Save and then change Photoshop Manages Color back to Printer Manages Color.
    Go figure.
Thanks a lot for the help.
What I don't understand is why everyone isn't experiencing the same issue.

  • I can not access the switch through the console (solved)

    Hello,
    I'm having a problem.
I can not access the switch through the console. The web interface is working properly.
    Model: SRW224g4
    Below some pictures.
    The HyperTerminal settings
    error:
    If anyone can help me?
Thank you and excuse the bad English.

    Hello Rumenigue,
It looks to me like you are using a console cable.  The reason you usually see them the other way around is because with a console cable the RJ-45 end goes into the device (an ethernet jack labeled console) whereas on this switch the console port is serial itself.
Usually the serial end of the cable you have plugs into a USB to serial adapter (because most computers today don't have serial ports anymore) and that USB connection goes into your PC, creating the virtual COM port you need in HyperTerminal.
So if you get a USB to Serial adapter you could plug that from USB to the console port, or if you computer has a serial port of its own just connect a serial cable directly from the PC to the switch, then use HyperTerminal with the settings recommended above by Tom.
    Hope I have helped,

  • Can't open print & fax preferences, can't print

I know I've read about this problem before, but I can't seem to find the thread. I'm a total novice when it comes to terminal, but I don't even know where to start. Whenever I try to print, or even open print & fax, I just get the spinning wheel. I'm using Leopard on a 17" MBP, and I'm set up on a network with several printers (I can't even open the individual printers...everything related to printers or printing just freezes!!)
    Any help is much appreciated!

I think I have bigger problems here...
I think you may be right.
    Have you installed anything recently?
Open up Console.app and see if there are any messages that repeat regarding the crashes.
How much free space do you have on the disk?
You can get into the CUPS web config through http://localhost:631
I couldn't find anything like "Reset Printing System," but you can view the error logs (which you can do from Console.app), and edit the Configuration file. There is a button to use the Default configuration, but I don't know what that will accomplish. Might be the last ditch effort before reinstall.
EDIT: From About the Reset Printing System feature:
What does Reset Printing System do?
Deletes all printer queues and jobs.
Resets all printer settings to their default by deleting configuration files.
Performs a permissions check on the /tmp directory.
    1) Can do that from CUPS interface
    2) Noted above
    3) They should be rwxr-xr-x root:admin

  • Can I access printer options using airprint from my ipad?

How can I access airprint printer options, such as cancel or page setup?

You can cancel a print job from the Print Monitor. On the AirPrint Basics web page take a look at the
    Viewing the Print Queue
    section.
There is no page setup in iOS. Some apps such as Pages let you pick a page size. Some apps fo not.

  • Epson 960 works well but can't access printer ink utility

I set up an Airport Express wireless network last night and hooked up my Epson 960. It works well but I can't access the printer ink utility. The printer is missing from the utility listing so I can't clean the heads or check ink levels.
Any suggestions or experiences that may help?
    Thanks!

Thanks, that was what I was having to do.
It is kind of misleading to claim wireless printing capability only to have one way communication. Hopefully Apple will "fix" this issue in the future.
Makes it very inconvenient when printing photos or DVDs as I always do a nozzle check first to make sure nothing is clogged and keep from wasting a good (and expensive) sheet of photo paper or a burned DVD.

I am 62 years old and " technologically challenged" according to my daughters. Went to FF add ons, extensions, plug ins. Is printer supposed to be included there? One (older?) HP smart web printing 4.60 is supposed to be enabled. Is there supposed to be a driver enabled for the printer shown on the add ons or plug-ins? HELP!

  • Can't access Print Set Utility

I was attempting to print a rather large (83mg) PDF file with Adobe Acrobat Professional, using my HP 6100 Photosmart All-In-One Printer, on my Mac PowerBook 1.5 PC, G4 and it simply set and spun for 30 minutes. The printer finally gave me an error that there was a problem communicating with the printer, turn power off and back on. I did this, opened the document and selected print and it just spins, won't open the printer. I tried selecting the Printer Set Up Utility and it refuses to open, computer locks up.
    Any ideas where to start?

Printer Setup Utility should not be used on Leopard. It's way out of date and has been replaced by using AddPrinter ('+') in the Print & Fax Preferences.
Are you able to print the PDF from Preview? Is there anything in the Console logs?

  • Can't access 'print settings' in Photoshop...

    Hi:
In Photoshop, I am not able to see 'print settings' when I go through the print menu.  Does anyone know how I can access them, or a way I can specify the paper type (plain, ultra premium, etc.)?   When I look for the print settings in the other suite programs, I cannot see it there, either.
Any help would be really appreciated!
    Thanks in advance...

There's a suggestion from another thread I've copied below. Try Gabe's suggestion of resetting the Photoshop Preferences, and if that doesn't work, there are system-wide preferences you can also try deleting as mentioned in this message: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3026788#3026788
I called Apple support and they had me move preference files from the Library folder - anything that said "com.adobe.apple.print".  Restart and then it would print.

  • Can't access "print settings" on an Epson Artisan 1430.

Hi- When trying to print from my MacBook Pro, OS X 10.9 Mavericks, to an Epson Artisan 1430 I cannot access the "Print Settings" button. I select File and then Print from the top menu. I'm taken to the basic print screen and click on "print settings." The button changes color when I click but does not take me to a secondary menu, it just stays there. Can anyone help with this? I've just gone to Epson and upgraded to the latest drivers, etc.
    Thanks!

Did you try deleting and re-adding the printer?
If that doesn't work, try deleting the /Library/Printer/EPSON and the/Library/Caches/Epson/ folders and then reinstalling the updates.
If that doesn't work, see if there is anything in /Utilities/Console related to the app you are printing from.

  • Can I access printer from two computers?

I would like to print wirelessly from my new Windows laptop to the printer which is currently connected by USB cable to my iMac. I tried the Netgear boards first but the response they supplied was Windows-specific.
The PC is connected wirelessly via a Netgear DG834Gv3 router to AOL (UK) and my Mac is connected wirelessly via an Apple Airport to a different, cable network. Ideally, I''d like both computers to print wirelessly and I was hoping the Netgear router would provide the solution.
It may be pertinent to add that the Airport is stuck in the room the cable comes in, the iMac and printer are stuck in another room but the Netgear router can go just about anywhere.
Am I right thinking settings need to be tweaked on the Mac and a cable will connect the printer to the router?

  • Can I access printer connected to windows PC on my airport network

I have an airport extreme network with 3 MACs and 1 Dell laptop (yes I had to get a used Dell to run Mural Creator and TileCreator). Three printers (a dye sublimation printer, a Canon i9900, and an HP laserjet 3380) are connected to my airport extreme base station using a USB hub. I can print to any of them from all computers. The Dell is in my studio and I connected a HP Photosmart printer to it. How do I print to it from the MACs?

    Hi Stephen!
You're not providing us much information about your problem. Is the printer still connected to the Windows computer or do you have it connected to the Mac? Or are you trying to print across a network from the Mac to the Windows computer? What model printer? What have you tried? What doesn't work?
    Do this...
First, while in the Finder on your Mac go to the Help menu and search for an answer there.
Next, if you don't find an answer come back here to this forum and use the Search feature in the upper right corner of each page to search the older posts. Mac and Windows printing questions are plentiful here and just about every answer has probably been given.
Finally, if you get stuck post a new question that specifically details how your computers are set up with your printer, what you've tried and what you're needing to know or have answered.
Since you're already here and looking for information I'll also point you to this excellent information posted by iFelix, a regular visitor to this forum <http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/index.html>.
Hope this helps and good luck! bill

  • Print & Fax prefs & any and all print commands unresponsive

    Hi all,
Newb here. I have a 17" mbp running Leopard 10.5.2. I'm networked to a Konica Printer at work and I sent a very large job across. The job was incorrect so I canceled it. That's when the trouble started. Now I can't even open the print dialog in ANY program, nor can I open "print & fax" preferences in sys prefs.
I've opened the activity monitor and cupsd is just devouring my cpu. I've tried to kill it and restart it in terminal, but honestly, I'm don't really know what I'm doing, nor what the core problem is. Any help is appreciated...is there any more info that you need from me to help troubleshoot?
    Thank you!

    Hi John,
Thanks for your suggestions. Just so you know, I'm not a "console & terminal" guy. I'm willing to try any of your suggestions, but you're going to have to walk me thru...
Opened console and there seems to be a constant stream of "cupsd" errors. Every 10sec actually.
    Here's the system log entry:
"Dec 28 09:10:46 MacPro com.apple.launchd[1] (org.cups.cupsd[86732]): Job appears to have crashed: Segmentation fault
Dec 28 09:10:46 MacPro com.apple.launchd[1] (org.cups.cupsd): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds

If you'd like to see the entire Diagnostic report, let me know.
    What would you suggest now?

  • Officejet pro 8500 a909g, limited user accounts can't use printing preferences

The above discription explains most of it. I had install this 8500 printer, then shortly after, uninstalled the other two older  printers I was previously using. That is when the problem started. I can not access printing preferences from a document or from control panel\printer and faxes. But I am able to access from the administrater account. I did an online chat with HP help and what we did made sence, but did not work. We went into the security tab in properties and added the limited user account for all permissions and reboted the computer. Did not work!!!!    I have a dell laptop, windows xp pro, and the printer software is now uninstalled.    the window that pops up when I click on properties is: Function address 0x50085a97 caused a protection fault. (exception code 0x0000005) Some or all property pages may no be displayed. I don not have this problem as an administrater only as a limited user.

I had this similar problem.  Installed this printer a few months back and for some time it was printing fine.  Recently, I changed the default preferences to black/white, draft, low ink etc etc.  Now if I click on the Properties I get this same window:
*** (x50085a97 caused protection fault (exception code 9xc0000005 some or all property pages could not be displayed) ***.
Running XP on an Dell Intel Pentium and it happens irrespective of the application I am using - usually firefox or staroffice.  9 times out of 10 I can't change the properties, but occasionally it allows me too then reverts back.  So now I am stuck with everything printing black/white as that's the default I set!  Any suggestions welcome.

  • Finder can't access a mounted windows share - but the Terminal can...

When I mount a drive using the finder's "Go / Connect to Server..." command I can choose the share to connect to and Finder mounts the share, puts it on the desktop etc... but then it tells me that:
"The folder “Sharename” can’t be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents."
Any attempt to access the folder through the finder will result in the same error message.
Since the share does otherwise mount sucessfully, it shows up in /Volumes/ and using the terminal I can access the contents of the drive and open files. Applications, both terminal and GUI can read and save to files and folders opened in this way, but the GUI application cannot find the path again if you browse away in the app's browsable dialog boxes (like Save or Open). I can access any file using an absolute path in any program.
There are more nuances to this behaviour:
Other shares hosted by the same server don't have this problem.
Using the terminal, I appear to have the same Unix permissions to the files and folders on the shares that work as the ones that don't work.
Using Finder's "Go to Folder..." command I can open some, but not all folders in the flaky sharepoint mounts. All files seem to work though.
My guess is that there are some permissions that are making Finder unhappy, but I'm not sure what they might be. But regardless, why then can I access everything from the Terminal? I'd like to use the Finder - it makes my experience much smoother!
Some other people in this forum seem to have had the same problem with their NAS drives, but I don't think anyone has yet suggested they try accessing it via the terminal. It would be really helpful if anyone could confirm this Finder/Terminal discrepant behaviour.
    Any thoughts?

I am having the same problem but with OS X 10.9 (Mavericks).
I try to connect to the NAS via the Go / Connect to Server utilizing smb or cifs protocols and it will mount but then I can't enter the mounted drives/directories with finder.
The workaround for forcing smb1 has been applied and I find that Finder would not permit me to enter those mounted directories but I can go via the command line and work fine. The  only issue is that with a Mac, as much as everybody say, you should not need to go to the command line... Yeah, right.
For the amount of money that I paid for the Mac Book Pro, it should work. So, now I can confirm that even Mac OS X can be as bad as Windows...
Any idea when will Apple put out a fix or an update to finder?
