CUPS Network printer adds, but won't print...

My USB printer works fine, but my network printer is a much cheaper black and white laserjet that I normally print to.  The problem is, I can add the printer just fine; the drivers and everything add just fine.  When I go to actually print, I get the error message...
"Unable to locate printer '(enter printer name here)'".
The GNOME diagnostic tool recommends to go to System>Administration>Printing and enable it in the Policies tab, but every time I try that it almost immediately disables.  The printer is a Brother HL-2170w, connected through our wireless network.  This printer has worked with other distributions before, is there some user setting I'm missing?
Thanks!

Have you given your printer a static IP or dhcp reservation address?
I'm not really sure but isn't it just that your Arch setup doesn't have a way of resolving the printers hostname. The printer is using NetBIOS for broadcasting its name. I think you need a service on your arch setup that can resolve NetBIOS names or otherwise just use the printers IP.
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=52592
You could set your system up to use avahi and then instead of the putting the printers ip you could use the resolved name. For example on my computer  once the avahi daemon is running
[craig@eee ~]$ avahi-resolve-host-name -a 192.168.1.150
192.168.1.150 BRN001BA903A786.local
then just use the BRN001BA903A786.local as the address
lpd://BRN001BA903A786.local/BINARY_P1

  • CUPS is set-up but won't print test page or document.

    Hi, all.
I've just installed CUPS and followed the Arch wiki.  I've set-up CUPS many times before, but not under Arch.  My printer is installed with the default driver (for Epson Colour DX7400), but no matter what I do, I can't get it to print.  My printer is switched on and I see my prints in the print cue, and it says they are completed. Can anybody suggest what really obvious thing I must be missing?
    Cheers,
    Chris.

I eventually got my printer (HP Deskjet) working by using system-config-printer to set it up. This was after Cups couldn't even find it:
    sudo pacman -S system-config-printer system-config-printer-gnome hal-cups-utils
My printer's driver 'hplip' was also installed. To set up you need to find your printer's URI:
    sudo lpinfo -v
It should look something like this:
    hp:/usb/Deskjet_3900?serial=TH58F122KP04CK
I already had !usblp in the modules array. The only problem I have now is that the page formatting is slightly off. Cups 1.4 is especially problematic in Arch, I have a Debian Testing install and it was simple to set up my printer and it works perfectly. I've also tried it from a Ubuntu 9.10 live cd which includes cups 1.4 and no problems there either. It seems there's something peculiar about Arch's implementation of the new Cups.
This may or may not be of any help. I've seen so many people struggling with this and so many solutions proffered that another one can't hurt.
The following thread did the trick for me. I wasn't able to find hal-cups-utils in the repo anymore so the chmod trick worked beautifully. I'm using a Brother HL-2040 printer.

  • Airport Express wireless network works fine, but won't connect to Internet

I had a power outage and since then my Airport Express doesn't connect to the Internet although everything else seems to work. I can see the AE just fine in the Airport Utility. My computer connects to the wireless network provided via the AE, so does my iPhone, so does my wireless printer, and I can print wirelessly from the computer to the printer, so the AE's wireless networking is working. If I directly connect my computer to the ethernet connection that I use for the AE, it connects to the Internet, so I have wired connectivity to the Internet. But somehow, I can't get to the Internet using the wireless network of the AE. Any suggestions on what I should try next?

    Hi there,
Try to reset your Airport Express (AX), y pressing the little dot on the back of device. Keep pressed for some seconds until it flashes. Start then your Airport Utility and go through the setup process again. This will reset your whole wireless network. This may work for you. Good luck.

  • Connected to wireless network in home, but won't connect to internet....

I have a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router. We have (1)PC hardwired to the router with (1) laptop PC & (1) iBook G4 connected wirelessly. All was working fine.
Wife opens iBook in the morning and it won't connect to the internet. Airport bars are full and says it's connected to my network, but that we are not connected to the internet. It won't even connect if it's hardwired directly to the router. I've tried reconfiguring, resetting, etc. and nothing works. But the PC's are working fine.
I admit that this is my first iBook so be gentle with the comments and my limited knowledge.
Thank you in advanced for the help!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

same problem - the ibook was connected and doing just fine wirelessly to the actiontec router - had been for months - then I accepted the recent updates (using the wireless connection which was working flawlessly) and immediately upon rebooting afterwards - bam - no more wireless connection.
airport shows 5 bars strong connection and name of network is still checked in the list - but nothing will actually connect.
the pcs in the house are still connecting just fine wirelessly so the problem is not the router.
the ibook will connect using ethernet cord (that is how I am typing this now) but cannot get a wireless connection going.
somebody - PLEASE - what is the secret to fixing this?

  • Cannot add a Canon Network printer to iMac (Intel) OS 10.8.3

I have never been able to connect this mac to the networked printer(Canon ImageRunner Advanced C5045).  The printer is detected as a printer nearby connecting through bonjour, but it won't print with the updated drivers, it wont print with generic drivers.  I've added it by IP address, by advanced settings with IP address, When I use the canon drivers, it gives me a driver error -50.  When I use the generic drivers it says its connecting and says it sent the prints, but nothing comes out of the printer.  I'm kind of at a loss.  Any suggestions?  Please?

been sitting here non stop for two days trying to make it work.
    Under Adding it by default:
Ive used the canon driver UFR II (both US and UK) 2.43 which is supposed to work with 10.8. This leads to an error "Cannot communicate with the printer, or the printer is not supported. If the printer is supported, check the printer connection and add it again, then start Printer Utility to get the printer information." Ive used the generic PostScript printer driver and the generic PCL printer driver.  These say they have printed - but nothing comes out of the printer.
    Under adding it by IP
Ive used IPP with canon drivers/generic drivers (canon drivers error -50 - generic drivers say they have printed but nothing comes out)   Ive used Jet Direct with canon/generic drivers (no results) Ive used LPD with canon/generic drivers (no results)
    Under adding it by windows
I've found what I believe to be the printer, but it asks me to log into the printer with a user name and password - I dont have either and didnt need any such thing to set it up on the windows machine right next to it.
    Under adding it by advanced
under canon CUPS BDL - got error -50
under canon CUPS Uni-direct IP - got error -50
under canon CUPS Uni-direct USB - got error 50 and Printer is not responding.Check the printer power and connection, and then try sending printing job again.
under canon UFR - got error 50
under IPP - got couldnt connect would you like to continue - yes - says printed - no results
under IPP (http) got error -50
under IPP (https) - got error 50
under IPP (ipps) got error 50
under Jet direct - got no results
under LPD/LPR - got no results
under windows with spoolss - got log into printer with user name and password - followed by error -50

  • Cups/Xfce network printing problem

I'm really pulling my hair out over this problem, I've tried everything I can think of and everything suggested to me by helpful #archlinux users... So let me start by saying what I am trying to do... It is quite simple in theory.
I have a box running Debian etch with a printer which I am trying to use from this local Arch box.
So Debian has Cups on it and one printer which is shared and published and I have access to the Cups server from this box. I can successfully access the web interface of that box and print a test page. The Cups version on Debian is 1.2.7 (old).
On this box I have a fully updated Arch and I have Cups (1.3.7). Without any configuration, my local Cups web interface shows the printer from the Debian box. I'm not really sure how this works but it appears to relay everything to the remote Cups. I cannot test this printer properly because this leads to a maybe unrelated Xfce issue. Xfce will not show any of my Cups printers (the printing system is set to Cups).
I have followed this section of the wiki: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CUP … x_to_Linux And lpq gives me this error:
    # lpq
lpq: error - no default destination available.
So instead maybe I will try to add the printer to my local Cups as a network printer. I choose ipp (http) and add the correct url, select either the foomatic HP 940C drivers (correct) or Generic Postscript drivers. The printer is now shown in my local Cups web interface (but not Xfce). If  I try to print a test page, however, I get this error in the log:
E [03/May/2008:17:26:24 +0100] [Job 11] Print file was not accepted (Quota limit reached.)!
So in a nutshell I have two possibly unrelated problems. Xfce/lpq cannot find my Cups printers and my Cups cannot print to the remote Cups. I've got to the point where I will just try anything... so any suggestions are welcome, but I don't really want to touch the Debian box, so backporting a newer Cups is not acceptable. Thanks!

You have to check the following:
    1. First of all, having access to your remote cups *doesn't means* that you can print. Do you have the same user/pass on both machines? What about printer permissions? Are you able to *manage* (and I mean _manage_) your printer jobs remotely? What about adding a printer remotely?
    2. In my case was as simple as installing the printer on the remote computer and enable *internet printing* (on server management). This enables the ipp stuff for remote printing.
    3. About printing publishing, have a look on the checkmark "publish printers connected locally to this machine" (or something like that).
And that's all. I don't like to play with lpr because ipp seemed easier, but YMMV. I hope this works for you.
    Greetz.
    1. I don't have the same username and password... The printer allows the user "guest" to print, which does allow me to print a test page from the remote web interface. I can manage jobs using the remote Cups web interface. I can't add a printer remotely because that needs admin permissions...
    2. Not sure where the server management part is. The printer can be used with IPP but it says Quota limit reached.
    3. I have checked the printer publishing stuff. The publishing is working as far as I can tell but the printer just won't take any jobs...

  • Printer connected, printer works, but won't print from Mac

I'm helping someone with a printer problem, and I have a mystery on my hands.
The printer is connected (directly), shows up in the printer list, can print a test page, but won't print any document from this computer (it's fine from my laptop).
    It's a Mid-2011 Mini, 2.3Ghz, running 10.7.5. The printer is an Epson WF-2540.
This is a USB printer, connected directly to their Mac.
In "Settings", when you select Print/FAX and print a "Test Page" - Success! This is a process that invokes the Epson Driver directly [and bypasses the MAC print queuing mechanism]
When "Printing" from within any application (firefox, TextEdit, winders...)   The job starts to queue, but errors before engaging the printer.
R & R the Epson Drivers,  Clear the Printer "stuff" on the Mac, Reinstall drivers from the Epson website, Mac wants to update the "newest" Epson Drivers (kinda' funny when I think about it...).
    Still errors.
I attached directly to a USB port on my MacBook Pro.  Download drivers, etc..  Works like a champ!
We have deleted the printer from System Prefs, rebooted, and added it back.
We have even gone into Terminal and...
    sudo bash
    cd /etc/cups/ppd
    ls
    found EPSON_WF_2540_Series.ppd
    cp * /var/tmp/
    ls /var/tmp/*.ppd
    rm /etc/cups/ppd/*
    Still doesn't work.
    Anybody have any suggestions?

Hi, it's not clear... did you Rest the Printing system on the Mac?
    10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8 instructions...
In System Preferences>Fax & Print, Right click or Control+click on the Printers list Sidebar, choose Reset Printing System.
if you hold option and click the "-" tab it resets the printing system.
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031215144430486
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.
Any devices that previously appeared in your Printer List and Fax List will need to be added again after resetting the printing system.
Resetting the printing system in Mac OS X 10.5.x+++
        1.    To use the Reset Printing System feature in Mac OS X 10.5.x, follow these steps:
        2.    Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
        3.    Choose Print & Fax from the View menu.
        4.    Control-click on list of printers on the left side of the window, then choose "Reset printing system" from the contextual menu. If you don't see a list of printers, Control-click on the text "Click + to add a printer or fax" and select "Reset printing system..."

As an alternative, if you currently have one or more printers listed, you can Option-click the "-" (Remove printer) button.

  • After upgrade to latest firmware canon network printer won't print

after upgrade to latest firmware canon network printer won't print. It's a canon MP540 on a wireless network. It will print a test page but won't print from any application, just sits there with the message 'copying print data'!
Running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74), with firmware SMC Version (system):          1.73f63.
    Any help gratefully received.

First off if you can print a test page there is absolutely no reason you wouldn't be able to print from a application...none.  But stranger things have happened now that we have Lion.  Within the application are you selecting the wireless printer........just had to check.
I have the MP620 which is simlar to your MP540 and have no problems printing from my MBA (June 2011).  I too have the latest firmware and software......without problems printing.
A few things I'd try would be to remove the wireless printer from your computer (in Preferences, printers), restart, and repair permissions.  Then add the wireless printer back, and see if it works.  If not.....power OFF the printer and turn back on.
If the above fails reinstall the printer driver (yours) I think you will have to plug in the USB cable.
Keep me updated and I'll tyr and help!

  • CUPS not printing to network printer.Printer visible to avahi and cups

Hey. Printing seemed to be working fine last time I checked (which, granted, was a while ago...I don't print that much). I have a networked Canon MG4100 class printer. I'll look into that when I get a chance. I'm just using the Gutenprint drivers. They were working fine up until recently...I just don't know at what point because I rarely print! I'm a little leery of adding the printer with a static IP address, because it's not a static IP setup...I know it should stay the same for the most part, but I thought that's why we used Avahi...to get away from having to know the IP address!
    Thanks for the input!

  • Network Printer not recognized by install software and won't print

I have a C5180 All-in-one printer hooked up to a wireless modem from my DSL provider.  That modem is hooked up to my desktop directly and my notebook via the network.  I had trouble with it this morning in that when I tried to print something the screen on the printer would say printing, but nothing would print.  I tried a bunch of different things and ended up reinstalling the software via the HP website.
The software is installed, but it cannot find the printer on the network to add it to the computer.  My notebook which I have not done anything with also does not print to the printer.  Although the printer does say printing when new items are selected to print, yet nothing ends up printing.
    Any suggestions?

I have also tried to use HP Print and Scan Doctor and it cannot find the printer on the network.  I try copying using the scan bed of the printer and it won't print.  It also won't scan because it says the program isn't fully installed.

  • How do I add a network printer to a terminal server for one user?

I have a 2003 terminal server.  I also have a network printer accessible by IP.  I want one of the users on the TS to print to this printer.
If I log in as the user, all print options are greyed (access denied).  There's no 'users' icon in control panel to give the user admin access like I might do on a workstation.  This printer is not installed on a print server so even if he did
have access, doing so doesn't appear to be an option.  If I log in as Administrator I can add printers but it wants me to specify \\servername\printername and it's not set up that way.  It's just a network printer on an IP.  Also I'm not trying
to get RDP to map the printer locally for the user, he needs to be able to print from the terminal server to the network printer.  Any articles I can find assume the printer is either local to the user or on a print server of some kind.
    Is this possible and how?
    Thanks!

  • Hp officejet pro 8600 plus will print but won't scan.

Recently I had some kind of software conflict with my printer in Windows 7 so I deleted it and reloaded the printer software. I selected enable scanning at set up. It is a network printer and everyone can print to the printer. When I went to scan today the printer sees my computer and will let me select scan but I get a screen error on the computer and then the printer says the scan was unsuccessful. I checked the IP address which of course is good.
The Error says "Scanner Unreachable" X Scanner communication cannot be established. Ensure your product is powered on..... If you are installed using a cable check it...... If you insalled this printer by IP address then you might need to update IP address....... If you are running firewall software, it may be blocking the scan communication. Go to HP.com/go/wirelessprinting for help. -"
I turned off my firewall and my virus software and I get the same error. I restarted the computer, router, modem, and printer a couple of times. The frustrating thing is the printer sees the computer from the touch screen but just won't complete the scan.
    Any suggestions?

One windows and 2 macs can connect to the wireless printer over the newtwork just fine  but one (Windows 7) will not. Welcome to the forums @Davidchicago ,
I read through your post about the installation troubles you are having with one of your Windows 7 computers and your Officejet 6600. I am here to let you know what my suggestion is for you!
There could be a program blocking the installation and causing the problem. I'd recommend a Clean Boot, restarting your PC, disabling your firewall and running through the installation again.
Hopefully that will get you through the install. Let me know the results!

  • Gnome 3 reports a network printer as "not connected",but prints fine

    Hi,
I got the same problem mentioned here as "Other issue": https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=119248
When I print on my network printer it always says "printer is not connected" at first (popup in gnome shell) but then it prints fine.
I think it has something to do with CUPS or some settings of the network card (inside the Kyocera FS-1020D) -> I have disabled the whole apple things like Bonjour etcpp.
In the mentioned thread there are several perople reporting this issue - did anyone solve it?

  • Won't print information sheet for network printer

I have accessed my printer on two different computers wirelessly. I need a "printer code" for other devices, which apparently is printed on some "sheet"....which won't print. I get a message that "a web services information sheet will be printed...." but nothing ever comes out (but documents do so I know it works.)
How do I get this information sheet to actually print?

Thank you SO much for your quick response! I think it kept dropping the connection intermittently and screwed up the request to "enable" the network printing. (That was on the page where you enter the ip address in a webpage) so when I asked to print that info page, it just lost the request every time.
I did google around a little and reset the router and the printer by replugging in the printer. I also reset some automatic IP stuff  to manual setting (I am REALLY not familiar with this kind of thing...can you tell!? ha ha!!!)  Anyway, I followed the instructions for a different printer (with a similar connection issue) here on the hp site...the DNS thing seemed to make the difference:
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Networking-and-Wireless/HP-Photosmart-5510-Printer-Wireless-Net...
I hope other non-techies like me can follow those instructions too. That 8.8.8.8. and 8.8.4.4. stuff and the re-plugging in seemed to somehow make it work!
