Cups printing to pdf

Here I come again with another question.
I did an Archive and Install about two months ago in order to solve some problems that I had with Safari, which kept quitting unexpectedly (this problem seems not to be recurring.)
I was able to print to pdf using CUPS-PDF before the Archive and Install but I cannot do this anymore.
I am able to save as pdf, but the procedure is not as straightforward as using CUPS-PDF.
I've downloaded CUPS-PDF from the Gutenprint and Gimp-Print for Mac OS X (10.2 and later) website to no effect.
I've reset the printing system and done everything else that I found helpful in Apple discussions, again to no effect.
System prefs shows CUPS-PDF as one of three printers in the printing menu (Deskjet 6980 and Adobe PDF being the other two, both working OK.)
Printer Setup Utility shows CUPS-PDF status as "stopped" and kind as "*Generic PostScript Printer*."
Clicking twice on the name in Printer Setup Utility, CUPS-PDF window shows "*No job printing*" and the dock shows the generic icon for a PostScript Printer with an exclamation point.
I know that OS X 10.4.11 comes with CUPS, but it does not seem work.
Will greatly appreciate any help you can give me.
Regards,

If I understand what you are referring to as CUPS-PDF, it is not a part of or affiliated with the Gutenprint (Gimp-Print) project. I believe you are talking about software that will print a PDF to a folder of your choosing. The home page for CUPS-PDF is http://www.cups-pdf.de/download.shtml.
Did you reinstall the CUPS-PDF software after you did an archive and install of your system? Part of the installation of the software is an invisible file that most likely did not survive your Archive and Install. Try reinstalling the CUPS-PDF software.
Matt,
I did find CUPS-PDF.mpkg on codpoetry.
I downloaded and installed it. The installer didn’t report an error but I am still unable to print to CUPS-PDF
I’ve also found another downloadable CUPS-PDF on bitbucket.org‘s site; it gave me a zip file which produced a “cups-pdf-for-mac-os-x” folder.
In this folder there is a README file where it says “You may find the source code to the software contained in this package at the original author's site: http://www.cups-pdf.de/”, but there is no explanation as to where should the included folders be placed (I did write to bitbucket.org and am still waiting to hear from them.)
Do you have any idea where to go from here?
Thank you

  • Printing landscape pdf to Linux CUPS shared printer

I'm having a problem printing landscape pdf documents from Preview to printers on my Linux CUPS server. Documents print portrait style, with the right side of the document cut off. This occurs in both 10.4.11 and 10.5.2.
Using Adobe Reader or printing the pdf from the command line using lpr work correctly to the shared printer.
Printing directly to the printer (not through the server) is the only way Preview prints it right.
    My CUPS server is:
    Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy
    CUPS 1.3.7

I'm having the same problem. I have a Lexmark x9350 that is shared through Airport Extreme.

  • CUPS problems with PDF printing

I am having all manner of problems with PDF printing.  Recently added a Lexmark MX710 and have 7 machines that were previously printing fine to an X652de a T652 as well as a Samsung CLP770.  All network printers.
Now there are bizarre issues with PDF printing. CUPS version 1.6.1.  The MX710 will blue screen and reboot when printing one specific pdf without fail.  There are all kinds of random nonsensical results when printing from different locations.  A pdf that stalls the X and T652 with "filter error" will print from my own machine to the same printer, using the same versions of cups, .ppd file, and everything package related to cups.
Yet other PDF files will print, while some print complete gibberish, I can't find any rhyme or reason or anything predictable about any of it other than to say printing postscript files works fine all around.
This has been universally in KDE printing through Okular.
I've tried some things I've found suggested, such as modifying the mime.conv as suggested by an old ubuntu thread, adding the a2ps package, all to zero effect.

At this point the only reasonable explanation I can think of is that the ppd package I downloaded and installed via included shell script from lexmark for the mx710 caused this whole catastrophe.  The only common thread for this problem starting was that I used this on all of the affected machines and they now all manifest problems.  And on four of these machines this is literally all that was done, they were loaded in september, have not been updated via pacman in any way, and are running the exact same version of cups poppler, and okular that they were then, which was working, and now cannot print pdf to any printer at all without causing one of several problems depending on the printer.
I cannot seem to get this reversed though.  I've gone so far as to force remove all the cups packages, and delete the files associated with the install script, but the problem remains afterward.  From what I can see so far all this lexmark package did was display a license agreement, then copy the ppd files in it's folder to /usr/share/ppd/Lexmark.  This particular printer, the mx710 has no .ppd available that I have found other than this one from Lexmark directly.  Open printing doesn't have anything for this model.
This printer's driver has some kind of a cups filter driver with it that the install script presumably installs, I suspect this could be what caused the problem specifically, but I must not be removing it correctly, despite following the file removal suggestions in the Lexmark readme for uninstallation.  CUPS printing is something I am new to and only have a basic understanding of.
To answer some specific questions I nearly forgot, I don't have cups pdf installed.  I have chrome installed which can successfully save pages to PDF, previously it could also print pdf, and presumably it prints everything as pdf given the cups pdf workflow.  That is also broken now too, so printing from the browser causes the printer to fail as well.  If I save as pdf from chrome, and print with adobe reader, it works.

  • Problem printing borderless PDF w/ Snow Leopard + Acrobat Pro 9 + MS Office

Create a borderless Word doc in MS Office 2008 (text or images go all the way to the edge).
Using OS X 10.5, you can select "Print to PDF" and it will print a borderless PDF. Beautiful.
Using OX X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), that's now impossible because Snow Leopard is incompatible with the Acrobat 9 PDF print engine. (See this article: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/509/cpsid_50981.html )
    Is there a solution?
This is a Snow Leopard problem, so Apple must be responsible for the solution. It worked beautifully with 10.5, and now an upgrade renders it entirely useless.
    Please help urgently.

I use US Letter and A4 page sizes frequently, but have been known to use other sizes as well. A custom hack would be great, thank-you.
Download CUPS-PDF from the link above. Download my PPD file with borderless A4 and US Letter from: http://etresoft.org/opensource/PostscriptBorderless.zip
Copy the PPD file somewhere convenient on your system. Go to System Preferences > Print & Fax > + (to add a printer).
Select CUPS-PDF. In the Print Using pop-up, select "Other" and choose my PPD file. Click the Add button.
Now when you print to CUPS-PDF, you will be able to select borderless A4 and borderless US letter. Your PDF files will show up in /Users/Shared/CUPS-PDF/<your user account>/
Although the underlying issue still remains.
That Adobe's PDF Printer doesn't work? Yes. I agree.
(To be honest, I think both of the companies should be working on solutions as urgently as possible as it's disrespectful to their long-term customers.)
Again, I agree. While I am certainly biased towards Apple, in most cases (and especially this case), it is Adobe that needs to get their act in gear. Snow Leopard was released over a year ago. Adobe had pre-release copies long before that. Their PDF printer still doesn't work. Some random guys on the internet (the authors of CUPS-PDF for MacOS X and me) were about to make the 5 minute (no exaggeration!) changes required to produce a functional virtual printer for Snow Leopard. Why can't Adobe?
Feel free to forward that to Adobe http://www.adobe.com/bin/webfeedback.cgi

  • Preview won't print some PDF files

Hi everyone, I know a similar problem has been already discussed but it was not solved.
When I print some PDF files from Preview on a Lexmark C524 color laser printer, I get only figures and symbols but no text. If I print the same files on a HP 2100 it prints ok.
I thought it was the printer driver, but then I tried the same using Adobe Reader 9.1 and it prints fine on all printers. So my guess is that it might be some PDF version compatibility issue with Preview.
    Any idea anybody?
You can find one of the PDF giving problems at the following address: http://www.pnas.org/content/106/1/97.full.pdf
    Thank you,
    A.

Is there anything in Concole or the CUPS log (/var/log/cups/error_log)? It could be a font problem, but one of the places above should have some indication.
    Hope this helps.

  • I can't always print to PDF but can figure out why...

For some reason I can't print to PDF in all applications, but I can in some. For instance, I can with Word but not with say Illustrator or Safari or even Preview.
I've tried deleting and adding the printer, both as Generic Postcript and Adobe PDF 3016.102 (the only option when I choose Adobe). I've also searched for a while thinking it was a driver issue or something.. Maybe that I have Acrobat Pro on my Intel back but I installed Adobe Reader, the Intel version, and that didn't seem to work.
Does someone know why this is happening and what I can do to fix it? It's not a total pain because mostly I use it when print PDFs with Word, but the fact that others don't seem to work bugs me.
I thought it might be because Word is still PPC, but so is Illustrator so that didn't make sense to me.

    Hello Doug,
The ability to print pdf's is not dependent on the installed driver. The OS X printing system converts all print jobs to a pdf spool file with a job ticket. It is also not necessary to have Acrobat Pro or Reader installed to generate a pdf or view it. The Print window provides the option to print to pdf even for non PS devices such as inkjets.
Can you explain what happens when you do try to print to pdf from Illustrator or Safari. Do you get an error or does the job seem to process without a document being generated? If you are not sure about the error you can open the Console application and have a look at the entry /var/log/cups/error_log.
Also, have you tried to print to pdf via the Print window or have you always tried to print via Adobe's driver?
    Paul

  • Preview won't print some PDF's

Periodically, Preview will not print some PDF files. I open them, print them, it appears to go to the printer, yet nothing happens. Both with HP laserjets and a brother USB multifunction.
Yet if I use Adobe Acrobat on the same file it prints fine. ANyone know what might cause this?
    Thanks.

  • Printing to pdf in Konqueror

I have a strange problem with printing to pdf in konqeror. First when i want to print with a preview, i get a message "Preview failed: unable to start program PostScript Info." But I can continue to print. However, once the pdf is created, the fonts look really terrible.
I installed the cups-pdf and tried using that method through konqueror and still got crappy fonts. However, when I used firefox + cups-pdf on the same web page, the fonts looked perfect.
Although I use firefox most of the time, I still need to print stuff from Kmail (html stuff).  Is there any way to adjust this strange bug?

I'm using kdemod and had the same error message when opening print preview. Installing kdemod-kdegraphics-kghostview did help there. But i doubt it will help with your fonts problem.

  • Acrobat PDF 8 printer missing pdf options

I have seen this discussed in a few places, but have never come across a fix that works for me. Basically when trying to print to the pdf printer, the pdf options is not available in the drop-down of printer settings. This is affecting about 10 of my machines at different sites.
I have tried removing the ppd and letting Acrobat repair it. I have also tried multiple other suggestions to change the permissions of the ppd file. the other method I have tried is to remove the pdf preferences from ~/Library/Preferences.
I am running 10.4.11 on all of these machines with the latest version of Acrobat 8 professional.
Thank you for any help you can provide!
    -Ken

I've been playing with this for a couple of months now and haven't got any closer to a solution. It is not application specific. The problem can be seen when printing from any application to the Adobe PDF 8 printer.
The only thing I can think of that may be different is that I modified the Adobe installer to include the volume serial number for our organization.
Things I have tried that have not worked:
    * Cleared caches, preferences, fixed permissions, verified no disk problems
    * removed PPD, and PDF plugins from /Library/Printers/PPD\ Plugins/ and /usr/libexec/cups/backend/pdf088
    * removed preferences and application support files from /Library and ~/Library
    * Let Acrobat repair everything
    * Reset print system
    * Ran all updates
    * Manually uninstalled CS3 and re-installed
I have the same problem on Leopard, but I am able to fix it by fixing the two aliases located in ~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.print/AdobePDF8/Aliases/ Or just simply delething them and letting them regenerate.
I know more people out there are having the same problem, I just don't see any answers out there that actually work.
    Thank you,
    Ken

  • Automate Print to PDF

    Hi,
is there a way to automatically print to PDF a html file saved locally on my computer?
I want to get selected Finder items (or choose them), open each one in Safari, print it to PDF, close, open the next, print, etc... (No real reason Safari has to be involved though).
Surely such a basic thing as Print is available to Workflow! Or Applescript. I just don't know how to use the "Print" AppleScript command to get a PDF:
print v : Print an object.
print alias : The file(s) or document(s) to be printed.
[print dialog boolean] : Should the application show the Print dialog?
[with properties print settings] : the print settings
I have searched through here for a while and haven't found an answer. I expected that this would be a common thing to do. Maybe a Unix (ew!) schell script alternative?
    Cheers, A.

Here's someone asking essentially the same question.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7044661
CUPS-PDF seems to be the answer, but it doesn't seem to work reliably on my machine. Sometimes certain images from the web page I'm 'printing' just aren't there.
I can't believe they still haven't got a basic Print to PDF AppleScript command!
    Cheers, A.

  • Print a report from Application Express direct to a CUPS Printer

Hi all, I'm new to this technology, is it possible to print a report from Application Express directly to a CUPS Printer? Can someone tell me in laymans terms how to do it? I find the terminology and documentation less than helpful.

    Jeremy,
BI Publisher handles submitting reports directly to a CUPS printer. However, the APEX integration doesn't currently integrate with that portion of BI Publisher.
    Here's an options:
Use the Java API of BI Publisher to build a custom Java program that would do this for you. Delivering to CUPS is part of the Java API.

  • Printing a PDF created in Indesign results in blurry text.

    Hello All,
I am in need of assistance.
I have created a flyer for one of my companies products in In-design.
When I print the project directly form In-design the print looks great and the text is nice and crisp.
However, when I export the project to a "Press Quality" PDF, and print it the text comes our blurry and "dirty"
I have been trying to fix this for 2 days now with no luck.
I have tried multiple different setting during the export to PDF form In-design, all resulting in the same issue.
What is strange is when I print the PDF in black and white the text look just as good as if it were printed directly from In-design in colour.
I looked around online and found allot of posts regarding this issue but no definitive results.
I have also checked the colour of the text and it is 100%K.

    What color is the text?
Can you show some screen shots?

  • Printing Photoshop PDF

I am on a rented iBook G4, just got my iMac today but have not hooked it up yet --too busy. I'm on a deadline and am trying to print a Photoshop PDF to Adobe Acrobat PDF that I can to email to a number of people. I have been on a B & W G3 for seven years and have been using a program called "Print to PDF". Now I am hopelessly lost in OSX, which I will start learning after I get this project done this weekend. I created a Photoshop PDF in Photoshop CS2 and it's about 25 MB in size. I saved it as a Photoshop PDF and followed what I thought was the path and it seemed to print it; it opened in Acrobat reader but when I tried to attach it, it was even larger! It has a ton of layers but usually they save as 6-700 KB in my previos program in Classic.
Obviously, I have no idea what I am doing and need some simple explanation to compress this 8 X 10 page full of pictures and type into a reasonably sized PDF the way I used to!!!
Forever grateful; I did search the site but didn't find what I needed to know.

Gasketgirl, On top of flattening the layers, then saving as a Photoshop PDF, you can reopen the file in Acrobat and using the advanced menu, look for an option called 'Optimize PDF'. This option (and there are many more options once you open the dialogue) allows you to compress the file, downsample (I don't suggest you do this) and remove application specific data. Don't save the file after Optimizing as the optimizing itself is a save option. Resaving again removes much of the Optimization you just did!!!
