Cups saving paper surface

Hello dear Arch Linux community,
I am having troubles with my printer. It is trying to save paper surface and overrules my every command not to...
It will print only at approximately 1/4th of the length and width of the total page of A4 paper, as illustrated (somewhat poorly) below

This will even happen if I print a test page from cups, bit it will strangely enough NOT happen when I print from evince.
I have an epson printer, stylus sx115. I use cups to print.
My cups error log states the following:
E [26/Jan/2012:17:29:10 +0000] Returning IPP client-error-document-format-not-supported for Send-Document (ipp://localhost:631/printers/Epson_Stylus_SX110) from localhost
E [26/Jan/2012:17:32:43 +0000] Returning IPP client-error-document-format-not-supported for Send-Document (ipp://localhost:631/printers/Epson_Stylus_SX110) from localhost
This is probably for the test page printing, but there are no errors when printing with evince from pdf.
I cannot find anymore errors in dmesg, or page/acces log.
For now my workaround is to always print to pdf and then print from evince, but this is by no means a nice workaround.
I also tried several different ppd drivers, like this one:
Epson Stylus NX115 Series - epson-inkjet-printer 1.0.0-1lsb3.2 (Seiko Epson Corporation LSB 3.2) (color, 2-sided printing)
Epson Stylus SX115 Series - epson-inkjet-printer 1.0.0-1lsb3.2 (Seiko Epson Corporation LSB 3.2) (color, 2-sided printing)
Epson Stylus SX115 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.7 (color, 2-sided printing)
They all have the same problem when printing not from Evince (so cups web interface, firefox, eagle, libreoffice etcetera.
Only the latter one gives more options for configuring the resolution which I like.
So fine printing, except for the fact that it is unreadable small

  • HP printer not saving paper tray preset

    Hi,
Leopard has seemingly removed my ability to set a default "paper feed" tray setting on my HP 1320.
In Tiger, I had a saved preset that always printed from TRAY 2. Leopard sees this preset and defaults to it like it should, but the print feed now says AUTO-SELECT, which prints from TRAY 3. I can manually switch it to TRAY 2 and it works fine, but I don't want to do this every time I print.
I tried making a new preset with TRAY 2 selected, but that dialog box defaults to AUTO-SELECT right when I hit SAVE.
It appears that lots of people with various HP laser printers have the same problem.
    Any solutions anyone or Apple?
    Thanks,
    Barry

We are aware of this problem and working with Apple on a fix. I don't have any other details to share at this time, or any way of working around the problem, but I wanted to make sure you knew we are aware of it.
    Just trying to help.

  • How to print red color in plain paper?

When printed on glossy papers, red color (in photo or text) looks great.
When I print on non-photo, plain papers, red color came out brownish.
I tried on premium ink jet papers, it does not print red but in brown color.
How can I print red color in plain paper?

When dealing with printing ink, R=100m+100y+0c+0k. What drives the color toward rust, maroon, and brown is the addition of c to the mix. That may be the result of the diffuse reflection of the uncoated paper surface, its absorb rate, the ink chemistry and – the light source. Since the easiest variable to test is the light source, look at that color using a source weak in blue emission, incandescent light, and watch the red shift. Remember also that the reflected color will never be as bright as paper it is printed on. Each ink film is a filter subtracting light from the paper reflection.
Shown above (with a mode change to RGB for the purpose of this display) is its version of 100 each of m+ y  and a patch with the unwanted c

  • What are my CMYK options ?.

I've recently received a small batch of calendars from a local commercial printers.  The colours are OK, but do not match the originals, especially the blue's.  I've had similar problems with greetings cards from a different printer.  The problem appears to be that I supply the original files in the RGB color space, but they print using CMYK.
I Raw process using Lightroom 4, with adjustments if necessary being made using Elements 10. To the best of my knowledge neither of these programs have the option of editing or saving in the CMYK color space.  For more accurate colours is my only option to purchase the full version of Photoshop (CS6 or CC), then convert and colour correct my images in CMYK mode before sending to the printers ?.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated

I looked HP indigo up. It's a process that emulates traditional offset printing through electronic means. Wikipedia writes:
"The technology is based on HP ElectroInk, which uses small colour particles suspended in Imaging Oil (Isopar) that can be attracted or repelled by means of a voltage differential. The ink forms a very thin and smooth plastic layer on the paper surface. The fact that these particles are so small ensures that the printed image does not mask the underlying surface roughness/gloss of the paper, as can be possible with some toner-based processes, bringing Indigo printing closer in appearance to conventional offset lithography, whereby ink is actually absorbed into the paper."
This may explain why there isn't much difference in appearance of the actual printed image on different paper types. ERGO–Very little difference in the paper specific printer profiles–but it's still limited to the four inks CMYK gamut. Apparently HP Indigo printers have wide-gamut capability using six or more color inks similar to  wide-gamut inkjet printers, which none of the digital print houses seem to offer. Here's a paper that discusses this capability:
HP-Indigo Technology and its Application to Photo Printing
    On page 3:
    Beyond the four process colors
While HP indigo presses brings high quality with four process colors, spanning ISO 12647 color gamut and reaching the darkest colors, they can also utilize up to three additional colors.  Light Cyan and Light Magenta inks for photo-realistic imaging. The light inks reduce granularity, providing smoother images and tone transitions, and a true photo look and feel. The white ink can be used for special applications, such as printing on black papers. IndiChrome enable enhanced color gamut.

  • LR4.3 and Colorbyte Imageprint 9

Is anyone using these two programs to compliment each other?  I'm using an Epson 4900 and am finding that Colorbytes ICCs are far superior to the canned Epson profiles.  I'm particularly interested in your workflow.  Are you building print templates in LR4, saving to a file and then printing that file in Imageprint? Or, are you just exporting your print jobs to a folder for opening in Imageprint and doing the work there.  Obviously, Imageprint is a RIP and built for large/recurring print jobs but it is so good even when doing small jobs I prefer the quality of the print over the Epson driver.
    Appreciate your input.

    Hi!
One reason not to choose Imageprint is that if you get into trouble like I did when upgrading from Epson 9800 to Epson 11880, you get a very bad service from Imageprint and the danish reseller. The case here was, that I in 2011 upgraded my Imageprint license from Epson 9800 to Epson 11880 and expected the same behaviour on all functions. What did not work was paper suction, which was only about half compared to using the Epson driver. This was a major problem when printing on heavy papers like Photo rag, and FB Baryta and the like, and led to scratched paper surfaces, smearing etc.
A lot of e-mails went back and forth to Colorbyte support and Bisgaard Graphics, but the problem was never solved. It turned out that Colorbyte at that time did not have an Epson 11880 inhouse to develop the software with. I was shocked to hear this. Finaly I gave up and agreed, in writing, with both Colorbyte and the dansih reseller Bisgaard Graphics that I could have the upgrade canceled and have my old 9800 dongle back. I mailed the 11880 dongle to bisgaard graphics back in 2011 to have it reversed, but nothing has happened since. Since then I have written several times but with no reaction whatsoever from Bisgaard Graphics and Torben Bisgaard. Right now the situation is that Colorbyte took back both the upgrade and their initial product without compensating me for what I initialy payed, which was a rather substantial amount.
Another thing I learned afterwards, is that if you are able to make your own profiles, there are better and much cheaper alternatives to expensive RIP's, which on newer Epson printers yields results just as good as Imageprint, and in some respects Better. The answer to this is Qimage, which at that time, amongst others, print much sharper images than Imageprint does and at a tenth of the price of the Imageprint RIP.

  • How can I print just a select/highlighted portion of a webpage/email? FF prints EVERYTHING on each page, wasting ink.

I switched form IE to FF. In IE, I could select text (or photos) and print just the portion of web pages and emails that I wanted, thus saving paper and ink. I have not been able to do that with FF. I have to print all of each page, so text, ads, and whatever other extraneous material prints. What a waste! Is there any way to select and print just what I need using FireFox? Currently I have to run both IE and FF to handle my printing and documentation needs. Thank you!

Still happens with Firefox 12. I wish they'd just fix it, the way it used to be in Firefox 10, without the complicated workaround suggested above.

  • Firefox does not start in Linux unless some extension was changed (i.e. activated/deactivated)

    == Issue
    ==
Firefox is crashing or closing unexpectedly
    == Description
    ==
Problem: When I start FF in Linux, it crashes after the cursor is jumping for half a minute. Nothing is displayed. When I start FF from the command line, I get the prompt back after one second without any message. In safe-mode and with all extensions off it always starts.
However, when I change something in the extensions' settings, it may start: If I start in safemode, deactivate all extensions, and restart - here it goes, with all extensions off. If I activate all the extensions again and restart - here it goes again, with all extensions on. If I delete one or more of the extensions' folders in the extensions-directory of the profile (i.e. sth changes about the extensions!), it may start again, too, but not in every case.
What could be the cause of this issue and how can I resolve it?
I use FF 3.6.8 in openSUSE 11.3. The profile-directory I use with FF in Linux is also used by my Windows-FF. As for extensions, I use Greasemonkey, Firebug and Web Developers Toolbar

  • Any way to get more than 100% zoom on print jobs when printing multiple pages?

I know how to increase the size of a print job, when I am printing one page at a time. But when I go to print 2 pages at once (the multiple page print function), there are always large margins around the page. I'm ok with saving paper and printing up two pages, but it seems silly to see small print and wide blank margins. Is there any way to increase the print zoom, when printing multiple pages per sheet of paper?

I once overshot the limit by marking too many photos to fit within 99 pages, but I could never figure out how to fool the application and had to give up trying to add those 14 extra photos.
I asked a friend (who practically lives in Terminal) if he had any way of modifying that limit, but he reminded me that if their printing services are set up to bind books and bill for only 99 pages, fooling the application might be useless if the service only prints me a 99 page book and discards the additional pages.
I can understand that you wouldn't want to let people print 1000 page books, but I sent feedback anyway to allow me to increase the limit. Anyone know of any service that lets you print beyond iPhoto's limits?

You mention it is a DV/HDV Film - how did you edit it? Did you edit both formats on the same timeline in Final Cut? (What were the settings in Final Cut for the timeline?)
If you are using HDV in a timeline due to the length of time to conform the output, you may be better off exporting the entire thing for testing (small enough for HDV, though I often use AIC or 422 nowadays).
What settings are you using in Compressor? I know you mentioned many combinations, but did you use any frame controls? What was the rate? Did you use CBR/VBR?
One thing to try to get things started. Use 8 CBR and in the frame controls set them to to "Better" for all of them. Will take a bit longer using the filters but should give you an idea where you are at. (Also take a look at the self contained movie to see if there are any artifacts/picels there).
How are you watching the DVD - computer screen or burning to a DVD?

  • Udated computer; can't print anymore.

Yesterday, my printer was working perfectly with my computer (Macbook Pro with OS X 10.5.8).
I was printing a pdf in Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.1.6 on an Epson R1800 (no drivers installed). I got home from work tonight to start printing some wedding invitations, but I decided to update Adobe Acrobrat Pro to 8.1.7, as well as install drivers for my printer. For some reason, when I tried to print a pdf from Acrobat Pro, it gave me this error message:
    /Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter/Filter/rastertoescp.app/Contents/MacOS/ras tertoescp failed
I have no idea what this means. I tried everything I could find online, from trying to print out of Preview, or a different program. I tried printing from just Acrobat Reader (as opposed to Acrobat Pro). I tried uninstalling all my drivers, rebooting, clearing my printer settings and adding a new printer (and lost all of my previous saved paper settings). I've even tried looking for a way to go "back in time" to yesterday (or even this morning!) to try to go back to my settings from yesterday. I've been at it since 7pm today, and have pretty much exhausted myself looking for a way.
Just wanted to see if anyone here has dealt with a similar problem, and if there is any way to solve it. Or if there's a way to restore my settings from this morning (like a Windows System Restore)?
Thanks so much for your help.

Okay. So I just printed off the Gutenprint setting and it worked BUT ONLY ON 8.5X11. This makes it seem like there is something wrong with the drivers from Epson being compatible with my computer and program settings (Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.1.7, OSX 10.5.8).
Can anyone tell me how to delete my new Epson drivers to go back to the original Epson settings I was printing off yesterday? Or of any other way to solve it?

  • Can´t print large files with 10.5.7

    Hi,
we finally have updated our G5s, 2x2GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB system disk. Since then we are unable to print documents from CS3 + CS4 which result in cups print files > 1 Gb. Doesn´t work with GMG rips, HP Laserwriters and Adobe PDF printers. The jobs always show up as "stopped" in the queue. Error log of cups says:

We have tested a catalog file with 150 pages which didn´t print. If you broke it up into 6 pieces (print page 1-25, 26-50...) it did work. Unfortunally we have jobs with single pages exceeding this limit. All together we have tested around 10 differend files.
We have tried to reset the printer queue, installed the drivers and deleted and created all printers, but nothing helps. Looks like cups or one of it´s helper can´t handle files larger than 1 GB?
    Any help is welcome.

    Hi there,
Does you printer/RIP support protocols other than AppleTalk? If it does, then I would change it to something like HP Jetdirect-Socket.

  • Since updating to the new version the work web page that i use will only print 2 pages even if there are more. I can not get it to print all the pages in the document.

for instance....I have a documents that has 6 pages, I can scroll down and see all the pages but when i hit the print button it will only print 2 pages. I tried to change it in the setting part but there is no feature that allows you to change it.

For many years, Firefox has problems printing when some style rules are used. However, I am not aware of any changes for the worse in Fx4 (at least, until now I wasn't aware of any).
    A couple of thoughts:
    (1) Is it possible you were using an add-on in Fx3.6 that fixed this problem, but the add-on was disabled during the upgrade because it wasn't compatible? (Sometimes that can be fixed with a little hack.)
    (2) Are there any obvious settings differences that could be affecting printing, such as fonts, margins, or shrink-to-fit/percentage?
    (3) Does the workaround of selecting the entire page (Ctrl+a) and then choosing Selection under Print range in the Print dialog work? Unfortunately, this can slice through lines and images, but it often works around problems with style rules.
In the interest of saving paper, it often is useful to experiment with a PDF printer driver. If you don't have pdfFactory, you can install a trial version for testing: it lets you view the results without first having to save the file. (If you save with the trial version, there is a footer to that effect.)
    (4) Is it an HTML5 problem? You can toggle the HTML5 parser off, but this is a global setting, not site-specific. If you are familiar with about:config, filter on html5 and double click '''html5.parser.enable''' to toggle its value from true to false. This helps for some sites, but has no effect on others.

  • 2-Column Flowed Layout Problem

    Hi,
In the interest in saving paper and toner, I have begun using 2 column layouts. Here is something I'm working on:
    MasterPage1 has 3 content areas (Header, LeftColumn,RightColumn) //restriced to 1 occurance
    MasterPage2 has 2 content areas (LeftColumn,RightColumn) //occurances not restricted--used for content overflow from MasterPage1
MasterPage3 has 1 content area   //occurances not restricted--NOT used for overflow from above--different content altogether
The Pagination is such that content flows through the LeftColumn,RightColumn content areas in the order shown above. It is slick! Overflow from the RightColumn of MasterPage1 goes to LeftColumn of MasterPage2. So far, so good. Just what I wanted... except
Here is the problem: When the form is first opened, there is no overflow--all the flowed 2-column content fits on MasterPage1. MasterPage2 exists however it doesn't have any content yet because there is no overflow yet from MasterPage1. It's rendered empty--I get an unused MasterPage2, between  MasterPage1 & MasterPage3.
In a perfect world, I wouldn't have an empty MasterPage2 when the form opens. In a perfect world, MasterPage2 would only exist when there is content in the MasterPage2.LeftColumn content area.
I think there must be a scripting solution--like testing a content area for content. There are no events for a content area and the xml for a content area is an empty element with attributes for x, y, w, h, name and id.
So how do you test for content in a contentArea? Perhaps there is a different way?
    Thanks,
    Stephen

    Hi Niall,
Thanks for the demo. That is interesting--I think it might be possible to solve yours because you are flowing a single object and I think you could determine the total h value for it and control the occurrences of the MasterPage.
Something like setting MasterPage Max Occurance to 1 on the Object pallet
    Then, track the combined h
    var iHeight = xfa.layout.h($,"in",0) + xfa.layout.h($,"in",1)
    if(iHeight > "10in")then
         xfa.form.form1.pageSet.pageArea.occur.max = "2"
    endif
I know this isn't right, but I'm just wondering if this is a valid approach? What do you think?
    Thanks again!

  • Adobe Reader Update causes weird printing issues

I recently updated my Adobe Reader to Adobe Reader X. I have a Toshiba with Windows 7 68-bit I believe. After updating to Reader X, I noticed that when I go to print a document, the print settings in Adobe are default set to Print on both sides. I was only printing 1 page so I ignored this and just hit Print, but what happened was really bizarre. The printer printed a blank 2nd page, and then Adobe prompted me to reset my even-numbered pages in the printer to proceed with double-sided printing. If I uncheck the Print on both sides option, I have no problems, everything prints fine. I understand there's already attention called to the bug in the update that defaults the print settings to Print on both sides and has trouble saving new settings. I don't care about that. This is what bothers me: Adobe and the computer and the printer and whatever else is involved should be able to communicate properly that if only 1 page is being printed, it need not print a 2nd blank page and basically force me through the double-sided print process if there's only 1 page, right? Isn't that sort of common sense? I don't mind having to uncheck the Print on both sides option when I go to print just 1 page, but it seems ridiculous to me that I should have to.
Just so you know, I installed the same Adobe Reader X update on a much older computer with a much older printer and had the same problem.
I am wondering if this is an Adobe problem or a printer problem. Neither of the 2 printers I tried this on do doulbe-sided printing automatically. They both require manual help to print on both sides. Will printers that automatically do double-sided printing also send the page through twice even if there is no 2nd page? Then this probably wouldn't be such an issue, if the printer did the double-sided printing itself, I wouldn't care if it passed the paper through twice.
But given that not all printers are equipped with automatic double-sided printing, this then becomes a real pain if I forget to uncheck the Print on both sides button because I then have to go through this entire 2-page process for 1 page. And my printer is in a common area, not right next to my computer, so it adds a lot of back and forth trying to print just 1 page.
Also I read up on previous posts about the default Print on both sides setting, and read one employee's comment that Adobe simply retains the last default setting used for printing PDFs. This is not true. Since my printer at home does not do automatic double-sided printing, I never ever ever use any double-sided printing setting. Even when I do print on both sides, I print odd pages first, flip them over and reset them in the printer, then send a second separate job to print even pages. Same with my work printer. I understand that by defaulting to the double-sided print setting, Adobe is sort of tricking you into saving paper and that's great and all, but all printers don't do double-sided printing automatically. I ended up wasting double the amount of paper last night trying to print a document last night while figuring this out, so way to go.

    Dear user,
We would request you to check your version from Help-> 'About Adobe Reader X' because we doubt that you are using an outdated version of Reader. Please update it to 10.1.3 because it was a known issue in 10.1.2 which got fixed by 10.1.3.
I would also request you to check your printer side setting from Control Panel-> Devices and Printers-> Right click Printer-> Printing Preferences-> Search for 'Print on both side or duplex printing' option (generally its under 'Finishing' tab)-> Uncheck it there if you are not using it.
Hope this will resolve your problem. Let us know the result.
    Thanks

  • Cyan overprint in white border around pix

    Using Epson 1900 and CS5---
Using Colormunkie created paper profile for Epson paper - using any paper surface and problem exists..
It is printing a light cyan overprint on the white borders around the pictures. There is no cyan overprint in the picture itself.
When I use any Espon paper profile for the 1900 - it does not occur. Nor does it occur in CS3.
Any ideas? Show Paper White and Match Colors boxes either checked or unchecked in the Printer dialog box does not make a difference.

Thanks Chris- yes you are right the other profiles are version 2.0. I will contact X-Rite tomorrow and see if their units can produce icc profiles in the 2.0 version. Although I doubt it. Curious, though why problem did not exhibit itself in CS3.
