Curiosity question  about 5th Gen Nano video...

I was watching a TV show called "The Good Wife" and there is an episode where a kid sets up a Nano to record continuous video for a security problem. I realize this is Hollywood and they can do anything they want, but I'm wondering what the max length of time a Nano (32GB) could do taking video.
For this argument, lets assume it's plugged into power as I think the battery would deplete very shortly while recording video.

Thanks for the info. I guess the TV program was in the realm of possibility. And to the comment above about a 32 GB Nano, I thought I read somewhere that there was such an animal. I have the 16 GB unit.
Now if this unit had an option to take a photo every 5 seconds or so, it could be a inexpensive security camera.
I don't think I'm getting anywhere near your battery life. Wonder if the Pedometer is draining the battery when the unit is in standby? I know I've never gotten anywhere close to 24 hours of music.

  • I have a few questions about 5th gen ipod

My iPod has a very sluggish transfer rate for my music and I wanna connect it with the firewire cable I got with my old mini. When I do I get a message saying it's not supported on the ipod. Does anyone know if that is just me or if there is a firmware update.
Also I have both a iMac G4 flat panel and a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop. I've had some video problems with my iMac(as you might have seen) and I am thinking of selling it on ebay, does anyone know how I can transfer the music from the mac to the windows laptop without networking or installing the ipod on the windows and transferring through that?
    Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The 5th Gen iPods do not support Firewire for data transfer. You can only charge via Firewire. This is not a firmware issue. There's no firewire controller in the 5th Gen iPod.

Your iMac probably has a CD-RW drive. If so, just burn the tracks as a Data/MP3 CD, and then import that CD into your iTunes library on the Windows machine. You can fit hundreds of tracks on a DATA/MP3 CD.

  • Questions about 6th gen nano fm radio

Is it possible to dock your 6th gen nano in the 30 pin car adapter and listen to the nano fm radio over your car stereo speakers?
Does the car act as the antenna?
My problem is that i have a U. S. spec. VW Golf, driving it in Germany, where my U. S. spec car radio will not fine tune into German channels and I thought this might be a possible fix.  yes or no?

If this is the case (moisture damage) I'd be quite surprised.
I clip it to my waistband, with the screen facing outward. It doesn't really get sweaty at all, maybe the backside of the metal clip, and the screen stays relatively dry. Maybe my hands are sweaty, but this is supposed to be a workout-oriented MP3 player for active people, right? I am just using it on an indoor elliptical trainer, and it never sees rain or dripping moisture.
When I get my (fourth) unit, I can try clipping it to my outer pocket, but if this is the problem they are not sealing it very well. What is strange is that the unit itself looks very tightly sealed from the outside and it's hard to believe they cannot do better.

  • Downloading video files directly to 5th gen nano.

I recently got a 5th gen nano (only prior iPod was a 1st gen shuffle) and was excited to put video on it. I found that, due to limited remaining disk space on my laptop, I have to delete files in order to have enough space to handle a movie download from the iTunes store. Apparently the file is saved to the laptop's disk and then transfered to the nano. Is there a way to direct the download directly to the nano? Thanks!

    Simple answer, no.
You need to either buy a bigger hard drive or add another hard drive to your computer. If you delete the videos from iTunes and sync the nano to iTunes you will lose the videos on the nano.
Here download the manual for the nano:

Surprisingly the manual is well written.

  • Fm tuner in 5th gen nano let you play out of car stereo?

i have an older car (2001) that does not have a jack to plug in an ipod. back in the day, with my mini, belkin made a fm tuner that could attach to mini, to listen to ipod from car stereo.

I have a Belkin FM transmitter which I use with a 2nd Gen Nano and it also works with a 5th Gen Nano. The only difference is that I first have to put the Nano into play and then plug the FM-T. in, otherwise it doesn't work.
Hence I would assume a transmitter which worked with a 4th gen also works with a 5th gen. After all, it is all about the connector and that is always the same.
    Hope this helps.

  • When does the new hard case for the 5th gen Nano come out?

Does anyone know if there is/when there will be the clear plastic hard cases for the 5th generation nano???

You might want to ask this in the 5th gen nano forum.

  • 5th Gen Nano not listed

We got our 5th gen nano today and are very happy with it. We looked to buy a few iPod (clickwheel) games on the store (iTunes 9.0). However the compatibility list for the games stops at the 4th generation nano and doesn't list the 5th gen nano at all. Any thoughts on likely compatibility?
Message was edited by: Mac@DBB to include iTunes version.

OK - to answer my own question a little bit. the 5th gen nanos aren't listed in the compatibility info but i just loaded Asphalt4 and when it had downloaded it listed the Nano 5th gen as a compatible ipod in its detailed info. It installed and ran fine.

  • FM tuning on 5th gen Nano

How do you tune "even" numbered frequencies on the 5th generation Nano(like 90.4 or 88.0)? Tuning "odd" frequencies is obvious. Is it even possible? Thanks

  • HT1386 I have an older iPod (5th gen, 30GB+video).  My computer crashed and itunes was no loner accessible on it.  On my new computer, how do I transfer the music from my iPod to the library in iTunes that is on my new computer?

I have an older iPod (5th gen, 30GB+video) that I had connected to my computer with iTunes.  That computer crashed and the only place my music is stored is on my iPod.  How do I move that music to the iTunes program (version 8) on my new computer.  When I connect my iPod to my new computer the music shows up in my iPod's music directory but I can't move it to the library.

    - For other music you need a third-party program like one of those discussed here:

  • Three 5th gen nanos. One NOT recognized by itunes and computer; other 2 fine.

I have 3 daughters and three 5th gen nanos. I use the same cord, plug and computer, and one is not being recognized by itunes or computer and will not charge; other 2 fine. Something wrong with just the one. Resetting (pressing menu and center until apple appears?) doesn't work. One daughter very SAD. Please help if you can.
Oh, and I've also put it in disk mode. Still not recognized.

I think I found the problem, and it may be useful to others. I cosely looked at the dock connector next to the earphone jack and found that it has a chip in it. Not good news for Gen 5 ipod nano's. Apparently, the connector is bonded to the logic board. I did find that if I gently put pressure on it in one directio or the other, it will make a connection.
Must break the bad news to daughter. Sad face.

  • 5th Gen iPod Video not syncing all video podcasts

My 5th Gen iPod video is not syncing all of my video podcasts.
I did specify in the settings to sync all videos, but for some reason it only places 3 of each on the iPod. This is using the latest version of iTunes, OS X 10.4.8, and iPod up-to-date.
This did work fine with the previous version of iTunes and only seemed to happen since the "upgrade".
I've tried restoring the ipod - didn't work
    Reinstalled iTunes - didn't work
    Rebooted system - didn't work
    Undocked/Redocked iPod - didn't work
    Please Help.

Assuming you're running iTunes 7, connect the iPod and wait for it to appear in the iTunes source list. When it does, click on it, and click on the 'podcast' tab. Make sure it is set to sync all podcasts. Check the 'video' tab as well.
iTunes 7 included several new options for setting just how the iPod will update in iTunes. So, it's a good idea to go through them and make sure they're set exactly how you'd like them to be.
    Hope this helps

Hi guys, I just got a brand new 5th gen nano (for my birthday) but when i connect it to the usb port on my pc the error message usb device not recognised comes up and i've tried all the usual ways to remidy this (the 5 R's etc). Also, when i check the drivers, all that comes up is unknown device.

  • With 5th gen nano, how to display album artwork during playback at all times, it stays on for a few seconds and then the screen goes black? Is there a way to play and see artwork, at all times (using with a aux. speaker)

I have a 5th gen nano, and I play it often on a aux. speaker. I would like the album artwork to display at all times while playing it here. Right now it plays for a few seconds on each song, and then goes blank. Can this be changed?

The artwork turns black or the screen's backlight turns off?  If the backlight turns off, simply disable the backlight timer, but keep in mind this will significantly reduce your iPod's playback time and battery life.

  • 5th gen nano stopped working and won't charge

My 5th gen nano stopped working all of a sudden, and also won't charge.  Any suggestions are appreciated!

Hi, I also have a 5th generation iPod nano. It is very old (or at least for technology), so the issue is most likely the battery. My advise would be to buy a newer generation iPod because it would most likely take more time/money to fix the problem than the iPod is worth. Check out the refurbished section of the Apple website, the prices are typically sufficiently lower than the price of a brand new iPod, but just as good. Thats how I get all my Apple products.

  • My 5th gen nano will not sync win 7 .says connected but not show in itunes. driver is updated ,working properly ....help

my 5th gen nano ,has updated driver ,working properly. ipod connected but not showing in itunes ?

By the way, I totally restored everything. It was ok. It starts to 'unrecognize' my iPod Classic when it comes to synching with iPhoto. After this happened all the menus disappeared from my iPod (music, Podcasts, movies synched fine). It seems to be a problem when synching with iPhoto. It was the same thing before.
