Curious about the heat from an iMac?

Hello,
I have an 3.4 Ghz iMac i7 8gb Ram that I just purchased. I never really noticed how hot the fan gets on the top of the machine until I touched around it today, and it literally turned my hand red. I don't want to go by touch alone, so I downloaded iStat Pro. I was wondering what the normal temperatures are for the iMac and how hot that vent really should get.

Ds Store,
I've noticed on my MBP that the fan idles around 2000 RPM as well and moves from there. I am assuming that because they're different machines, they're going to run at different temperatures.
The MBP have a minimum 2000 RPM fan speed because the fans are smaller and the case if more compact, so the airflow has to be naturally higher.
The iMac can have a slower fan speed in comparison because the case is larger, the fans can be larger and more more air at slower rotation speeds, so I'm not going by that at all.
Far as the CPU's, that's a different animal. Intel makes them and they all have heat tolerances ever since they hit the thermal wall, so it makes economic sense to keep the heat down for both desktop and laptop processors instead of seperate production, economies of scale and all that.
The heat issue is why Apple and IBM split over the PowerPC, they couldn't advance the RISC architecture and keep the heat down for laptops.
Why Sony and IBM made the Cell processor as a game console, due to it's heat. And the Xbox took 3 PPC G5 processors. My old Dual G5 was a hot bugger for a desktop, no way was that going into a laptop, I should have seen the writing on the wall for that and sold before the Intel announcement and recooperated the $10,000 I bascially threw away on a soon to be obsolete platform (dam you Apple!)
So the CPU temps one can get a eyeball on what would be the ideal and 100-120ºF at idle is about right. Mine is about 95-100 F at idle because of the fan tweak.
Now the GPU temps are another story, the iMac has a larger GPU and screen than the MBP's, so it's understandable the temps could be a bit high there, as well as the power box being insdie the case, unlike the MBP where it's a brick on the wire.
I recommend the 1000 increase in minimum fan speed to keep the machine a bit cooler than what your "burning the hand" comment, but I basically see your temperatures as being normal for what you have.
Your concerns are like others who expressed the same, it's more in the "personal preference" zone than a actual problem with overheating.
But I wanted to warn you about the expensive hard drive replacement, sometimes the cheap drives Apple sometimes use die within a few years.

  • Question about the heat sinks in these models

    Hey all,
Can anyone tell me about the heat sinks used in these model laptops?
    Here are my questions:
Are they made from pure copper?
What is inside the tubes that run between the processor covers and the fan? Is it just air? or something else?
Is the thermal paste that sticks to the processors toxic?
I'm not sure this is the right place to ask but thought i might as well try.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

you mean the entire T series range, or are you after information on a specific T model?
    1) most of the parts are made of pure copper
    2) there is a working fluid within heat pipe, which should either ethanol or acetone. The phase change from liquid to gaseous phase is what transports the heat away from CPU/GPU/motherboard chipsets.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_pipe
    3) thermal paste usually contains silicon and silver, it is not to be ingested as such.

How can I copy all the files from my iMac to an external drive so they remain as 'regular accessible files'? I want to clean my dive

You can use a program like Carbon Copy Cloner.  It will clone your HD to the external.  The format is the same as your internal drive and you can boot from it using Option key at boot time.

  • Gettting information about the processInstance from BPMObject

To have our businesslogic manageable, we decided to make use of BPMObjects to more clearly define separation of concerns. However, we still need to be able to access information about the processInstance from the BPMObject. I am able to get information about the activity that invoked the bpmObject, and i am also able to get hold of the process id and name. But I havent been successful in getting the actual instanceId.
I tried Fuego.Lib.ProcessInstance.id.id, but that will only work from an activity, not a BPMObject.

  • I just found out about the switch from Elements to Adobe Revel. HELP

I do not want to spend any money  on something I rarely use. I also do not want to grant "rights" to any person or corporation for my family pictures.
Will I need to delete my account?.

Hi. There is not a switch from Elements. The switch is from Photoshop.com to Revel. Elements will work as it always did with the exception of communicating with Photoshop.com sharing and storage since that service is being discontinued.
In additon, Revel is free as long as you don't want to upload more than 50 files a month.
Check out these FAQ's and try Revel. After that, if you do not want your account, we can delete it.

I don't quite understand why you can't access settings on your iPhone. You can back up your iPhone to your computer by connecting it to iTunes on your computer.

  • Can the heat from my computer hurt my battery?

Hi I just had a second battery put into my almost 4 year old macbook. The 1st replacement was put in last June I believe. I had it replaced again a few days ago because it would die out within 20 minutes and the computer wouldn't go to sleep it would just shut off. So I'm trying to keep this new battery healthy for as long as possible. What I was wondering was if the heat from the computer running can hurt my battery in the long run. The bottom of my computer is pretty much always hot. It is currently at 150 degrees F. I downloaded smcFanControl to increase the fan speed on my computer in hopes it would keep it cooler. I wanted to know if there was anything else I could do for it. Also how frequently should I cycle through my battery?
    Thanks,
    Kristina

" The bottom of my computer is pretty much always hot. It is currently at 150 degrees F."
On what sort of surface is your computer on? If it is on a flat hard surface, the temperature of your computer is too hot, and there's something wrong.

  • Curious about the iOS 5 software that is coming out.  If I wait til its release to buy my iPhone 4 will it come with the iOS5 software already on it?  or should I go ahead and buy my iPhone 4 and then update the software when the iOS5 is released?

Yea I would have to say wait until the release of IOS 5, because the phone will probably run it a lot smoother. I mean go ahead and buy the Iphone 4 if you are dying to have it, because you can just update it which is no big deal at all, but it would be the smarter thing to wait for the new updates.
And the networ issue as far as I am aware is fixed on the Verizon iPhones, so it really depends on which service you have.
    - correct me if i am wrong
Have to disagree here, Apple have not even announced an iphone 5, it is pointless to speculate that we will see one or not see one until Apple actually releases a statement. ios was built and tested on the iphone 4 so there will not be any slowdown or laggyness compared to a phone that has not been released yet.
If we are advising potential apple product buyers then we should not be putting them off buying a iphone 4 on speculations alone. Just because apple have for the last few years released an iphone every june/july does not mean then have to stick to this approach.
Apple have not issued any statement regarding an iphone 5, until this time it does not exist, only in heresay on the internet.
Any one looking to get an iphone 4, to you i would say waiting until ios 5 is released is a personal choice, no matter if you wait or not you will be able to update via itunes. One way or another in the future you will have to do an ios update via itunes whether this is the 5.0 software or 5,2,1.
Please note that Apple are very closed mouthed about new hardware releases and potentially a new iphone could be round the corner, however there is no evidence to suggerst this, i.e Apple have not even mentioned an iphone 5 this year anything you hear towards the contrary is media spin thus far and speculation.
ios 5 was built and tested to work seamlessly on iphone 4, the beta software released to developers is being tested on iphone 4. Please do not listen to people telling you that the iphone 4 will not run this ios as well as a phone that does not exist yet. When iphone 5 launches it will most likely have dual processors and not until its launch will the next gen apps start appearing.

  • Has anyone felt the heat from their monitor?

I have a Penryn 2.8 GHz 24" iMac and I park my face fairly close to the screen (about 12 inches (30.5 cm) and I can feel the heat of the screen.
I took temperature readings with a lab thermometer on 9 points distributed on a grid across the screen and it averages about 103 degrees F(39.4 C), ranging from 101 F (38.3 C) to 107 F (41.6 C). These measurements were taken while the computer was idle with just the screen saver running and the brightness at maximum.
Has anyone felt the heat of their screen like this? Has anyone ever tried to measure it?
Where does all the heat come from, is it all derived from the backlight or from the computer itself (107 is from the upper left and the 101 is from the lower right)?

You might be interested in running SMCFanCOntrol to keep your temps down. I'd recommend keeping the HD under 50C and the Power Supply under 60C.

  • Curious about the Spry Accordion widget?

Adobe is looking for participants for a brief (~1 hour) work observation and interview. Participants must meet the following criteria:
Dreamweaver CS4 user (beginner to advanced -- no CS3 users please)
Curious about Spry, but have never used Spry widget features in Dreamweaver
You know what an Accordion widget is from other sites, but have never inserted or edited one in Dreamweaver
Familiar with CSS styling and how it works
We are offering a small incentive to those willing to help us complete this study.
If you meet these requirements and would like to participate, please contact me at [email protected]
In your email, please confirm that you are a Dreamweaver CS4 user, that you have never inserted a Spry Accordion, and that you are comfortable working with and editing CSS.
    Thanks!

I added an accordion widget and it works on one site page while same code won't work on another page.
    It works here: http://dev.triptocollege.org/educator/Things-I-Should-Be-Doing-Now/K-5th-Grades.aspx
    Does not work here: http://dev.triptocollege.org/educator/Things-I-Should-Be-Doing-Now.aspx
Yet both pages have identical code (with absolute links to the CSS and JS files).
Can anyone shed some light on a solution?

  • Getting the most from my iMac

    Hi everyone,
I've had my iMac for almost 2 months now, just switched from windows, and of course on windows you can defrag the hard drive and check for errors and so on. My question is, do you have to do that on a Mac? I want my machine to run the absolute best that it can all the time and it seems that lately it's been slowing down a little. I've added a few apps and such but nothing big. So, if there is a way that I can make sure everything is clean and running at peak performance I would love to know how to do that, step by step. I'm very nervous about doing anything with the disk because I don't know what I'm doing. I'm very confident with windows but not Mac. If someone could help that would be awesome. Thanks, these forums are great!!
iMAC Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

If you are making the transition from Windows to OS you just have to remember that everything is much easier on a mac. What you are looking for is Repair Disk Permissions in your Utility folder. I click this before and after I install ANYTHING, including updates. It keeps everything running smooth and takes about 4 seconds.
I had been away from Macs for years and I like Windows and Macs. When I bought the Imac I picked up a handbook on OSX Tiger. I figured if I just spent a couple thousand on a computer another $30.00 was a small price to pay. I can tell you that it has already prevented me from making mistakes.

Last week, we announced the ideacentre Stick, which is a stick computer that you can plug into any TV display and turn it into a Windows PC with 2GB RAM and enough power to browse the web, create documents, etc.
So, what are some best practices when it comes to stick computing? Well, we have some below, check 'em out:

We had an absolute blast. I don't think I'll ever see a bigger fireworks display. I took a few pictures through our weekend (but not nearly enough to truly show what all we did!)
This was the view from our hotel in Backbay. That water line is where the fireworks were set off.
this is one street over from Newbury st. We were on our way to an improv show and ended up walking all the way to the center of the metro! (not a good idea when the wife was in heels, but we learned our lesson and took the subway whenever the walk was more then 20 minutes)
This was actually shot from the science museum through a window. For reasons.
Waiting for the fireworks. Everyone who had boats were piled up about a quarter mile from the barge. also city lights.
and more city lights (we have a competition at work, this and one other will be my entries!)
