Curious Display Behavior

After reinstalling Tiger today, at the first system startup, I got a blue screen (instead of the nice Tiger intro) and after a few minutes, the screen transformed into this:

  • Odd display behavior

    Happy New Year to All!
I just recently upgraded to Tiger. Since that time, I have noticed some rather odd display behavior on my screen. For example, when I am on web site that has a "fill-in" box, once I highlight that box to fill it in, a black rectangle stays in that position on my screen until I click on the desktop.
Likewise, if I highlight an icon on the desktop, a black rectangle outlines the icon and stays visible until I either highlight something else or click randomly on the screen.
I never noticed this behavior under Panther (10.3.9) and while it's not a huge deal, it does seem odd. It's as if the screen doesn't refresh after moving on. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Brad
P.S. After posting this message, a black rectangle corresponding to the message edit box stayed on my screen. Irritating.

    Hi William,
Yes, I tried both and booted / used my Tech Tool Deluxe repair disk. All no help. Don't know if they are related, but also have other odd things going on.
Is it normal to have two Restart selections, two Shutdown selections and two Logout Selections under the Apple menu in Tiger? I do. Didn't in Panther, but can't remember if I've always had them in Tiger. Should I?
Also, can't get my scanner (All-in-one, printer works) to run in Tiger. All of these problems go away when I boot into my 10.3.9 clone on my Firewire drive. I'd really hate to return to Panther, but ...
Basically, I'm getting some very odd behavior, from a system that has always been relatively bullit-proof until now. I do all the req'd housekeeping stuff, have both Macaroni and Cocktail. Don't know what to try.

  • Curious DragSource Behavior

    Hello,
I have an implementation that enables multiple items from a Spark List as well as a Halo Advanced Data Grid to be dragged and dropped to a particular target.
The AdvancedDataGrid packages dragged items into a format named "treeDataGridItems", and the Spark List, "itemsByIndex".
What is curious is when I go to inspect the items following a drag and drop operation, I have to cast the Array in two different ways.
For the dragged items from the ADG:
    var array:Array = event.dragSource.dataForFormat("treeDataGridItems") as Array;
For the dragged items from the Spark List:
    var array:Array = new Array(event.dragSource.dataForFormat("itemsByIndex"));
Is there any explanation for this?

    Hello Mr Harui,
    Yes it does indeed work.
It sounds then that this is the expected behavior.

  • How to trouble shoot curious charger behavior

Having a power cord charging issue.
    1.67 GHz PB G4 15" about 8 years old.
The origional power cord died long ago with a pop and smell of smoke.
I replaced the cord with a powerbook medic brand power adapter that has worked
with out flaw for 6 years.
The curious behavior is that when plugged into the port the PB will sometimes stop taking a charge.
Giggle the cord at the port and it will some times return.  When the PB stops charging green light on adapter stays green.
How do I determine if it is the charger or the port in the computer that is faulty?

The other weak link is the barrel-shaped power jack within the Powerbook:
(this image from microdocusa.com is of a G3 Powerbook connector but is similar to the G4's)
With age and stress, the solder joints that hold the thin "legs" to the logic board can loosen and cause intermittent charging failures. If you are handy with ripping apart a PowerBook and resoldering tiny parts, that's usually the sure cure, but not one for the faint of heart.
One person I know simply inserted tiny plastic shims between his loose connector and the logic board to wedge the connector back into constant contact. Decided a low-tech approach, but it greatly extended the life of his PowerBook.

  • Dual display behavior

When my MBP (GeForce 8600M GT with 256GB VRAM chipset) wakes up from sleep, the login prompt always appears on my external display (Dell UltraSharp 1702FP), which also becomes the main display; my MBP's display is blank. I then have to go into System Preferences > Displays and press Detect Displays to activate the MBP's display.
After doing so, the UltraSharp returns to being the secondary display, which is the setup I have /before/ going to sleep (which I activate by simply closing the lid on my MBP).
How does one explain this behavior?

Thanks for the hint re "Detect Displays". I was wondering if there was a way of doing that!

  • Strange display behavior - partial display of text

I scanned this forum and couldn't find this one anywhere -- My 15" Titanium Powerbook screen just went crazy after installing the latest security update.
By crazy, I mean that major portions of the menu bar aren't there now (but the screen isn't black, the text is just partially missing. If I open system preferences the same thing happens -- some of the text is just missing.
I ran repair permissions and check disk from the install cd. Had lots of permissions errors but that didn't fix this problem. Sound like software versus hardware?
Any ideas before I reinstall the OS?

Joyful,Welcome to Apple Discussions, Things I would try (and I did see something similar on my mother's iBook the other day):
Reset the PRAM (hold Apple, Option, P and R keys during start-up. Once you've heard the fifth startup chime in a row let go and allow the machine to boot as normal.
Check that the Zoom option in System Preferences > Universal Access isn't enabled (I can't remember the keystrokes off the top of my head but you wouldn't be the first to hit them by accident.)
Try toggling the display resolution System Prefs > Displays
    Delete the file com.apple.finder.plist

  • Curious quicktime behavior?

I am trying to watch the two links that Apple offers about the iPad.
The "watch the video" link plays just fine in Quicktime.
For the Steve Jobs clip I get video but no sound!
I've re-booted, dumped the Safari cache, repaired permissions, etc. to no avail. (And yes the sound slider for volume is set at max).
Am I alone in this oddity?
Any ideas why one works and the other not?
I'm using an intel iMac with 10.4.11. Everything else is up to the latest software updates.
    Best,
    Ken

Yes the setting is as you suggest.
The link from which I get no sound is: http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/1001q3f8hhr/event/index.html
The other informational link on Apple's page plays just fine.
I'm not going to worry this one as nothing else seems to have a problem. Other links elsewhere that use QT seem to work OK. So it's sort of an academic puzzle.

  • Curious ISAKMP behavior

I have been trying to figure out a very funny vpn connection between a meraki and an ASA.  Now I am the cisco technician here, and the problem is that two site to site vpns keep on negotiating.  I have xed out the public IP address, but the public IPs for the VPNs are the same.  Then the first VPN seems to be accepting traffic but when it goes to send the traffic it sends the information out of the second VPN connection.  Has anyone ever seen two vpns coming up for the same connection (there is only one vpn configured for this connection on each device).

This is not intentional, the meraki initiates negotation, as does the asa, and they both follow through to completion.  The result is two VPN tunnels, and only one vpn to the peer in question is configured in each device.

  • Accidental keystroke leads to bizarre screen display behaviors!

    Hi,
I hit some keys and suddenly both of my 2 screens' resolutions changed, so I cannot see the top menus AND when I move my mouse left the screen itself moves right, moving my mouse right the screen itself moves left, moving up the mouse the screens moves down and vice versa. Very strange!!! Changing the screen resolution in System Prefs does hot help the problem. What did I do and what can I do now? Thanks for your advice.
    Jonathan

Sounds like you might have accidentally hit option/command/8, which toggles on zooming; hit that combination again to get rid of it.
This and other similar settings can be found in system prefs/universal access.

  • Problem with display of JScrollPane

I have made a small GUI.
It has a JFrame and four JPanels are added to the frame.
The placement is done by program and hence layout manager is set to null.
Two of the panels contain JScrollPane.
One scroll pane is associated with a JList.
Another scroll pane is associated with a JTextArea.
I am creating panel components in their respective paintComponent() method.
Now my problem is whenever I run the code, the behaviour of the display of the GUI is erratic. Sometimes it appears perfectly fine other times the JList contents and JTextArea along with their scroll bars don't appear. I have tried running the code on different platforms and different systems. On some systems it works perfectly fine, on some it behaves erratically.
Moreover my experience is that it is giving problem on somewhat lower configuration systems (low RAM and CPU) and running fine on higher configuration systems.
I ran it on my laptop with 512MB RAM and centrino duo processor. (Both on windows and ubuntu it gave the same problem, random display behavior)
I ran it on a desktop with 1GB RAM and higher processor (Both on windows and ubuntu it displayed fine)
Does this problem relate to insufficient painting time or something of this sort? Why is this problem is coming and what's the solution?
    Thanks in advance.
Also if anybody has encountered similar problem please do share so that I could at least say this is not a unique one.

The placement is done by program and hence layout manager is set to null. That is (probably) your first problem. Learn to use use LayoutMangers, they save time in the long run.
Sometimes it appears perfectly fine other times the JList contents and JTextArea along with their scroll bars don't appearProbably because preferred sizes are not set correctly. Since you are not using a layout manager that is your responsibility. Easy solution is to use a proper combination of layout managers.
I am creating panel components in their respective paintComponent() method. That is (probably) your second problem. paintComponent() is for doing custom painting, not creating new components dynamically.
I suggest you start by reading the Swing tutorial for example programs.

  • Suspected Flaw in Firefox 35 Color Management Behavior

I hope I can keep this concise, but bear with me if my confusion causes me to include some extraneous info. The info below is what I think is required for someone else to fully understand the issue.
    BACKGROUND:
    - NECPA271W wide gamut monitor in dual monitor setup with a standard gamut Samsung 245BW
    - Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
    - Nvidia Quadro K4000
    - Latest versions of FireFox (v35 32-bit), IE11 (11.0.9600.17498 updated to 11.0.15 32-bit) & Avant (Ultimate 2015 build 7, in use for testing because it incorporates the rendering engines of 3 major browsers, IE v 11.0.9600.17496, FireFox v 34.05.5464, & Chrome v39.0.2172.95)
    - i1Display Pro (not the NEC SVSensor version), SpectraView II, NEC Multiprofiler & i1 Profiler
    - Both monitors are calibrated and profiled. The NEC is calibrated using SVII, but since that software only supports NEC monitors, the 245BW has to be done using i1Profiler software that comes with the i1Display Pro. SVII is only capable of generating v2 ICC profiles, i1 Profiler is capable of v2 & v4, and recommends v4. Nevertheless, I think this entire bullet point is irrelevant to the effect I'm observing.
    - I've lately started selling some of my photography on a fine art website.  As a result I started digging deeper into how those images are viewed by others & subsequently printed. Images optimized in sRGB for the best possible display results across a widely varied viewer base are not going to give the same results as images that are soft-proofed and optimized for specific media/printer/ink combinations. This is especially true of my images which tend to lean in the direction of being more heavily saturated & wider gamut
    - I've been exhaustively over the info here COLOR MANAGEMENT PHOTOSHOP CC CS6 Basic ColorManagement Theory ICC Profiles Color Spaces Calibrated Monitor Professional… & here http://cameratico.com/tools/web-browser-color-management-test/  among many others.
I had reached a point where I thought I understood things pretty well, but now I'm not so sure again Here's the problem:
I followed the guidance and info on how to set FireFox for FULL color management  (value 1 with associated monitor profile) that allows the handling of non-tagged images and web page elements, http://cameratico.com/guides/firefox-color-management/. Upon restarting Firefox with the updated configuration, I return to the test at http://cameratico.com/tools/web-browser-color-management-test/  The last two tests there are designed to show a) how much wider your display gamut is than sRGB, and b) how the browser handles untagged images and elements.
The behavior I observe is different from the behavior I expect! Specifically, setting FIrefox to color management value 1 and telling it my monitor profile causes Firefox to display the sRGB tagged images as if they were not tagged. With the default value 2/no monitor profile, I can see a difference between the display of sRGB tagged images and either the ProPhoto RGB tagged image or the untagged sRBG & untagged CSS elements. I would expect that the change to value 1 with monitor profile should have no impact on the display of tagged images and elements, and yet that switch ONLY causes a  change in the display behavior of the tagged images it shouldn't have affected, and I can no longer see a difference between the various images because everything is fully saturated
A marked up screen capture showing the comparative behaviors between the various applications and browsers would probably be worth more than the proverbial 1000 words, I'm new here & haven't figured that part out yet, but will post this as is while I work on that.
Can anybody replicate the behavior I observe? Is anybody spotting an error in my thinking?
    TIA
    Randy
*EDIT - I have annotated a screen shot comparing the results across 4 browsers. The screenshot has an embedded Adobe RGB profile which best represents the effects & changes that I was/am seeing but may not be preserved if posted here. It may be best to download and view in CS6 so as to not introduce any additional confusion arising from which browser YOU may be using :-) If needed the full res 2560x1440 version is available, but scaling to meet the forum limits of 900x900 makes the text unreadable. Can anyone suggest a means of supplying the full res file with the embedded profile retained?

    twenty_one wrote:
Firefox will use the profile for the main display. It does not support a dual monitor setup. If you move FF to the secondary display, it will still use the primary display's profile.
There is a Firefox Add-On called Profile Switcher that allows using multiple monitor profiles. You will need to setup a Firefox user profile for each monitor:
    https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Multiple_Firefox_Profiles
After installing Profile Switcher Add-On you will find a new entry in the FF File menu 'Open Profile Manager,' which can be used to create and manage the new user profiles (see screenshots below).
You can then setup a Firefox Sync account to keep the user profiles synchronized or do this manually using Copy & Paste. I was concerned that Firefox Sync would over-write the configuration data for the monitor profile, but it doesn't. I leave 'gfx.color_management.display_profile' blank on the user profile for the primary NEC 272W monitor, and add the path for the monitor profile on the user profile for my standard gamut secondary display. Here's what I see when launching FF:
After installing the Profile Switcher Add-On you'll see two new entries in the FF File menu that allow you to manage and launch other FF user profiles as separate browser instances.
It works fine on my Windows 7 system and should also work on Mac OS X systems and Windows 8.x.

  • IPad/iPod podcast playback behavior iOS 4.2.1

OK, kids, I've updated my iPad to iOS 4.2.1. I'm getting a new behavior in the iPod/videos function. I have a video podcast with about 20 unwatched episodes. Until I did the upgrade, I would play an episode, it would end and would return to the menu screen. I liked this behavior, but now, under iOS 4.2.1, when the podcast episode ends, it proceeds right into the next one.
I get it, some people might like it the way it is now, and that's fine. My deal is, that's obviously a behavior that's controlled via software. That parameter needs to be accessible to users, and it's not.
First question: is there a secret handshake that will allow me to control this aspect of podcast playback? If not, what would be the process of engaging the iPod software folks to try to create something where such parameters can be made accessible?
This is really a larger issue. There have been one or more playback or menu display behaviors that have changed from one generation of iPod to the next all the way through the line. It gets a little frustrating after figuring out how a particular iPod handles something, only to move on to the next new iPod, or iPod app on an iPhone or iPad, and find out this new piece handles a familiar function in a completely different way.
What's the next step? Thanks for any replies.

The issue I am seeing is that the podcast/tv show/movie actually starts over rather than going back to the menu. (it doesn't move to the next episode as you report). My husband's iPhone running 4.1 has the old (better) behavior. My iPad and my 2g iPod Touch running iOS4.2.1 both do the "finish the video and immediately restart it at the beginning" behavior, which is quite annoying.
I generally will watch a video at bedtime and rely on the iPad to go to sleep after the movie finishes, but now, I have to remember to set the Clock > Sleep Timer for the correct 'movie time' so that the iPad switches off once the movie has finished.
I'm hoping this is a bug and gets fixed. I can't imagine why anyone would want this feature as the default.

  • Brush icon not displaying correctly

    Hi folks,
I just installed CS4 on a lovely new Dell notebook with WUXGA display (1920x1200) and am having a problem that I have never seen before. When the brush tip is small (up to 35 px at 100%)  I see the entire circle defining it, but as I move into larger and larger tip sizes the circle starts to disappear from the bottom right, becoming just a smaller and smaller circular fragment until it disappears entirely at around 300 px. If I select the center crosshair, this also disappears around 200px (when only a small circular crescent is left), and then reappears at around 400px (minus any trace of the circle).
It is obviously some sort of display issue: if I change the image size the behavior is the same when the circle is the same size onscreen, so it is the display size and not the absolute pixel size which determines it. This happens whether I choose normal or full-size tip.
Has anyone experienced this? It is not only annoying, it is positively serious, since at certain sizes I cannot even tell where or how large the brush is.
Clear type on or off makes no difference. I have not noticed any odd display behavior with any other program.
    Any suggestions most welcome.
    Toby

This was a very common fault in the early days of CS4.
You need to update to Version 11.0.1 and get the latest video drivers.
You might have to experiment with OpenGL settings in the preferences too.

  • Mac Mini doesn't always recognize display type

Sometimes when I reboot or wake-up my mini, my monitor (Viewsonic VX2245wm) isn't recognized. There is no option in System Preferences-->Displays for the recommended resolution settings (1680x1050) when the monitor isn't recognized. The monitor name isn't shown at the top of the Display pane when this occurs. When the monitor is recognized, the display name is present at the top of the pane. Without the appropriate resolution, the display is stretched and fuzzy.
One potential issue is that the mini is connected to a VGA KVM switch? I use a DVI to VGA converter on the Mini so that I can connect it to the KVM. Could the KVM be preventing the mini from recognizing the display?
Is anyone aware of any methods to solve this problem?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

If resetting the PRAM worked, then there would be no reason to have to reboot would there? If it still happens after resetting PRAM, then that didn't fix it and the problem is elsewhere.
I doubt a DVI KVM would help, though if the issue is in the DVI/VGA adapter (some are a little less solid in their connection than others) then it obviously would - but then so would replacing the DVI/VGA adapter! However, if the problem persists, it's still worth testing with the display connected directly to the mini to help rule the KVM in or out of contention as the cause.
Aside from PRAM, where the system keeps a number of required settings, there are also 'properly list' files on your system which control how the system and all the parts of it, plus software components are configured. These are the 'plist' files you may have heard about. It's possible you have display-related plist files that are problematic. There's a simple utility called Preferential Treatment which can be downloaded (www.versiontracker.com is a good source) and which can then check all user and system level plist files for damage or corruption, allowing you to remove any that are. This is worth running.
In addition, there are specific files that control how MacOS connects to and configures displays which you can find and remove manually. If you go to the Finder's edit menu and select 'Find' then search for 'windowserver' (no quotes) you should find 2 or 3 (including one with a string of alphanumeric characters). Delete all that it finds and reboot. Replacements will be created. This often helps with inconsistent display behavior.
Lastly, one thing that also sometimes works is to allow the system to boot up with NO display connected, then when it's running normally, connect the monitor. This forces the system into attempting to detect the display properties, and in some cases once done, inconsistent failures previously don't return.

  • Aluminum's with External display oddities

I have two different clients that have Aluminum PB's and 23" Apple Cinema displays (aluminum as well). One client when he drags his Entourage window to the Cinema display it stops checking mail. If he drags it back to his PB display it does it's mail checking schedule without a problem.
The other client when he puts an Illustrator document on the Cinema display it will resize the Illustrator document to about a 1/3 of it's size. If you stretch the corner back out it will then snap back to an even smaller sliver of the document screen. You can keep doing this until the document eventually vanishes but is still considered open by Illustrator.
Any ideas? Any one else with weird external display behavior?

I have exactly the same problem with my MacBook Air connected to CinemaView 24 display. Mail printing is fine with the display disconnected. Could the CinemaView be the problem?
