Curious Key Command symbols in Logic Pro

Hi,
This conundrum relates to the curious hieroglyph-like symbols that appear in the Key Commands window.
So, I can see the familiar: function, control, option/alt, shift, and command symbols but what do ...
these bad boys relate to? Also, what is the keypad-like graphic that precedes the F1, F2, etc?
Thanks.

The symbol before F1 etc means that those key combos are learned via Key Position rather than via Key Label.
The top arrow is Page Up, the middle arrow Page Down, and the diagonal one is Home (diagonal in other direction is End).

• PRINTING KEY COMMANDS/ EDITING VOCALS/LOGIC PRO 7 compared with Logic 8

Dear all,
q1: i am trying to print the key commands. A way to do this is by Copy Key Commands in the Options pull down menu and then paste it onto a text editor (e.g word). My problem is, when I paste it onto word the names of the commands appear but the actual key commands on the right do not, and some symbols appear on the left of the names where they should not. Is there a simple way to print the key commands. My word processor is a 2004 word version and my Logic Pro 7 about a year old.
q2: I am recording a multitude of vocals. Which window would you find most practical for quick and effective editing? the arrange window or going into each region by double click and trim detail there? I somehow seem to prefer the arrange but would welcome any suggestions.
q3: I feel much more comfortable using Logic Pro 7 as Logic 8 does not advance my workflow yet. Am I alone in thinking in these terms. Would you agree on the possibility of users sticking at 7 for quite some time, maybe a year or two before they switch to 8 if at all. I d be very interested to hear anyones thoughts on this
Thank you all for reading. if you can spare a thought ot two I d be so thankful.
Nik

My experience is that I only learn a few key commands at a time.. ie really use them and remember them. Therefore go to the KC window and open up the commands where you want to concentrate your learning. Then take a Screenshot
(Command + Shift + 4 and draw a box) which appears as a Picture 1 on your desktop. Then just refer to that
many users ( me included) are still working in L7 with occasional experimental forays into L8
Those really on top of L8 have committed early on and really gone for it.. if you dont have a high new info tolerance or are not particularly software savvy.. stick with L7

• Advice needed on Key Commands presets in Logic

Hi, just upgraded to Snow Leopard and Logic 9 and very happy. Now I'm planning to work more with key commands. While watching many Logic 9 tutorial video's on youtube etc. I find different Logic users seem to work with different (default) key commands. For example: on http://www.youtube.com/user/groove3Inc#p/search/2/BSE3VdlkZJM he's using Ctrl * for 'Capture as recording', while for me the default command is Ctrl Alt Cmd R
Now my question is:
1. What is the default / standard key command preset in Logic
2. Which Key Command preset in Logic would be best to use (also considering that on a different location I sometimes work with Protools)
3. Which Key Command preset in Logic would be best to use considering the many tutorials I find on the web
Or any other advice / tips on key commands...
Thanks!

You can easily create your own set of key commands, according to your own needs. I mean, you still can learn some built-in key commands, but you can also change them as you please. Probably, in your case it might make sense to have the same set of key commands for both Logic and Pro Tools, to make life easier.

• Pro Tools key command set?

Is this no longer included? That's a real shame. does anyone know how to accomplish this? I don't see it in the key commands menu, and the logic setup assistant is no more..

Hey I just read a post by "Fuzzy chair Productions" in a different thread and they posted this explanation of how to import Logic 7 key commands, set your keys in 7 to protools settings, then use this to import the ones that match up into Logic 8. Don't know for sure if it'll work, because I don't want to do it. But worth a try, and thanks to Fuzzy chair Productions for the explanation below:
To import Logic 7 key commands into Logic Pro 8:
In the Key Commands window, choose Options > Import Key Commands.
Select the Logic 7 preferences file in the file selector you can find it >~/Library/Preferences/Logic/com.apple.logic.pro.
Logic Pro 8 will inform you about all changes which apply to your key command set at this point.
Note: Some Logic 7 commands may work differently—or may not be functional at all in Logic Pro >8.
To switch back and forth between the Logic Pro 8 and Logic 7 key command sets, you need to >export the Logic 7 key command set in the Logic Pro 8 format.
To export a key command set in Logic Pro 8:
In the Key Commands window, choose Options > Export Key Commands.
Type a name such as “My Logic 7 Key Commands” and click Save.

• Key commands are not stored in a separate file

On page 44 in the Logic Reference it says that key commands are stored in a separate preference file.
But that's not right is it? I believe the key commands are stored in the general preferences file for logic.

I believe it's actually a mistake in the manual and in
the way Logic is supposed to work.
I don't, as Logic has stored the key commands within the Logic preferences files since version 1.
What's probably happening is that when you use the setup assistant, the various template key commands (Pro Tools one and so on) are stored in various files. The setup assistant puts the necessary startup template keycommands file into the prefs directory, which when Logic loads, it sees them, parses them and inserts them into the preferences, which then behave like normal.
It saves the setup assistant from accessing Logic's preference files directly.

• MobileMe Sharing Key Commands?

Hi,
I have a Mac Pro and newly purchased 17" MBP which is my remote editing suite. I have some useful customized keyboard shortcuts which I told my Mac Pro's Logic Studio to backup/sync on Mobile Me.
After trying various ways of getting these key commands the new laptop (including what I thought would be the obvious "export key commands" option in Logic) I've yet to successfully copy my key commands over, and when I tried to sync my MBP's commands in the preferences (thinking I could "restore" from the backup I'd made on my MPro, Logic said it could only do this by taking ownership of the commands from the Mac Pro, which I said yes to, and it still didn't do it!!
Is this a "its supposed to work but doesn't due to issues with MobileMe" problem (As it seems a brilliantly simply idea) or am I missing some elephant-in-the-room trick here?
Thanks!
Ben

...anyone?

• Why does my Logic Pro (downloaded from App Store) suddenly hang when I load it up? Made no changes, can't figure it out.

Suddenly stopped working.
It hangs at 'Loading core audio'. Cannot figure out for the life of me why.
Tried installing a version from disc, but it said it was not compatible with Mountain Lion. I'm running 10.8.2.
Did no updates, nothing. Just suddenly will not work.
Have tried reinstalling etc. etc., but again, nothing.
Help would be much appreciated!
Thanks.

What have you recently installed (such as plugins, drivers other DAWs etc)?
If you hold down the Control Key and then launch Logic Pro, does Logic start up successfully?

• Key commands for part box missing in Logic Pro X

The manual mentions several key commands for selecting objects in the part box, that would make this a very efficient step time input program, but they don't exist in the key command list.
Can anyone help? All I want to do is select note or pause values with one hand while inputting pitc from a midi controller keyboard.

Thanks for this reply. You are correct I am actually running 10.9 and fully up to date on software updates for August 2014. My bad, thought I had taken the most recent option from the drop down menu.
I have been able to fix the issue but going into Library/ApplicationSupport/Logic and removing the 'drummer' folder. I also went into the plugins folder and removed 'drum presets'. I put all removed files onto a new folder on my desktop.
When I tried to open a drummer track Logic detected that the files were missing and prompted me to download the missing 'drummer files' once the download was complete, drummer operated correctly with all drummers available again.
I went back into the file system again and moved some of the drum presets that I had initially moved out (I  had originally acquired these when I first installed Logic and did a lengthy additional content download) that had not re-downloaded back into 'drum presets'. All drumkits were now available too.
If the issue occurs again I'll take a look at Spotlight file reindexing - would be worth a try and probably quicker. It would make sense that the underlying issue here is one around the drummer sampler code having issues around indexing the sample data.

• Logic Pro: Midi note key command

Hi all.
Does anyone know if there is a key command that allows you to set the length of a midi note in the piano roll? The example in particular I am looking for is if your chord takes up exactly one bar...yet one or two notes within the chord are slightly over (as a result of them being played in not programmed in), is there a key command that will automatically shorten said notes to one bar. At the moment I resort to cutting them or manually shortening them. I was just wondering if a short cut exists?

Result!
This works perfectly...Thank you so much for that info!
All the best

• Where is Next Partbox Symbol in Key Commands

According to the Logic ProX help files and user manual, there should be a key command for selecting the previous and next Partbox Symbols. Any idea where these commands can be found ?
Swingtones

Now I'm disappointed as these commands are important for those of us that use the mouse for note entry. I am a new user of Logic Pro X having finally converted from Logoc Audio for windows 5.5.1 just  last week. The missing comannds are in LA 5.5.1 . I don't understand how thay can simplry be ommtted after so many years.
The specific commands are all under the Score heading and are:
Partbox: 1/1 Note
Partbox: 1/2 Note
Partbox: 1/4 Note
Partbox: 1/8 Note
Partbox: 1/16 Note
Partbox: 1/32 Note
Next Partbox Symbol
Previous Partbox Symbol
Next Partbox Group
Previous Partbox Group
As I'm very new to Logic Pro and to Apple products. Could anyone advise me how I can escalate this to the developers
many thanks

• Keyboard keys are not working correctly in Logic Pro X 10.0.6

I was trying to use my MIDI keyboard but for some reason the "A flat" key above "Middle C" no longer works properly in Logic.
At first I thought it was my keyboard but I tried the same key in Reasons and Pro Tools and it works fine in both of these programs.
I tired to see if it would work in Logic Pro 9 but it does not work in Logic Pro 9 either. Prior to my Logic Pro X 10.0.6 update it did work fine.
I don't know what the issue is because it is working fine with the  other programs. A little help would be greatly appreciated.

In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
Press the Go button.
Remove the com.apple.logic10.plist file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you have programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You may wish to export your custom key command as a preset before performing this step. See the Logic Pro X User Manual for details on how to do this. If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro X, then you may also wish to delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.
Be sure and delete both files.
(Note: I would first try and delete the control surface preference only, no sense deleting preferences if you don't need to. Also, be sure and use the tilde ~ in the file path above.)

• Logic crashed, key commands no longer work as well as certain windows/preferences/tools no longer exist, help!

While trying to record a guitar track direct through from a POD HD Pro (which I've done numerous times), Logic suddenly crashed. The screen went dark and my Macbook Pro rebooted. Once I opened Logic Pro X again, it looks like a more primitive and basic version of Logic. I no longer have the capability to open a separate mix/midi/score/etc window. When I select midi tracks they do not show up in the piano roll as to be able to edit. I've also lost all key command functions (i used just default Logic key commands). Is there any way to restore Logic Pro X or do I need to reinstall it? Thanks!

Sounds like Logic's prefs got deleted or corrupted so...
First, do this (Note you will lose any custom key commands you may have created ...)
Quit Logic pro X and then....
Delete the user preferences
You can resolve many issues by restoring Logic Pro X back to its original settings. This will not impact your media files. To reset your Logic Pro X user preference settings to their original state, do the following:
If you have upgraded from an earlier version of Logic Pro, you should also remove ~/Library/Preferences/Logic/com.apple.logic.pro.
Restart the computer.
Now after restarting Logic... go to Logic Preferences/Advanced and turn on all the advanced features...
Set other preferences back to how you like them (Not forgetting selecting your Audio device)
Things should be then back to normal again...

• Score Editor: best key commands for attaching symbols?

Does anyone have suggestions for the best keys or a logical system of what Key Commands to use for attaching Score symbols.. especially these below?

well personally i use KCs that most closely resemble the articualtion.
eg (and very obviously) a stoccato is a full stop. ( . )
my accent varieties are on the key § which is next to one and i use mofidiers to get the other sorts.
i use apple brackets for crescendo descrescendo and brackets by themselves for slurs.
stuff like that. i guess i try to have the most commonly used KC as single stroke, and then for varieties add modifiers.

• Pro Tools Key Command preset

10.1's Key Command Preset list now, for some reason on my testbed Mac, includes a Pro Tools preset which was selected by default.... after the update
Had to manually change it back to U.S. preset....
This testbed Mac has never had any version of PT installed on it nor any Avid products....
This key command preset was not present prior to the 10.1 update
The fact it was selected by default after the upgrade is a little worrisome....

Maybe it is a hint that Apple secretly bought Avid (finally) and ProTools will be merged into Logic into the next update "Logic Pro XI"

• Missing 'Export Track as Audio File' command Logic Pro X 10.0.6

Hi - I have just installed Logic Pro X (v10.0.6) for the first time, having come across from PT.
For some reason, Logic appears to be missing some key 'Export Track as Audio File' commands from the menu. The shortcut Command + E just makes the screen flash and nothing happens. I also appear to be missing a lot of other basic commands along with this, based on what I have seen online from other users. Please see screenshot below of my file > export options:
I have tried reinstalling but the same problem occurs.
Could someone please confirm if this is normal, or how I might be able to fix if not? FYI, I am running OS X 10.9.1..
I am hopefully just missing something obvious here.
Thanks

Evidently it's not giving the user a choice at installation?
It does.. but it words it along the lines of 'Have you used Logic Pro in the past?" kind of thing....
So an experienced DAW user that hasn't previously used Logic, would get the limited installation.
The more people you try and and protect from themselves the more generic (i.e. limited) the solution.
Religion would be a good example of this.
