Curious LAB space behavior

I can import and edit a TIFF file when it is in LAB space. This is Good Thing.
I cannot even view a PSD file when it is in LAB space. This is downright strange. I've reported this as a bug.

It has been reported before.

  • Input support for LAB space

Rats! I know I read about this problem here somewhere but I just hit it with a vengeance. As things currently stand I cannot get Lightroom to display LAB files unless I convert them to ProPhotoRGB (for instance) and I'll be darned if I'm going to flatten those files.
Please add support for reading files in LAB space.

Since Parallels is not an Apple product, you can probably find more info as to what peripherals are supported by posting your question on the Parallels forums:

  • Erase disk space behavior

Hi! I've tried for the first time the "Erase free disk space" feature of Disk Utility.
However, I am puzzled... First it says "Erasing free disk space" and it proceeds. Next, it finishes (the progress bar reaches 100%), and begins again! After a while, it says "Creating sparse disk", and my hard drive goes to zero bytes available!
Is this normal? Or is it a weird behavior due to lack of disk space? I mean, if it copies all my files to a new sparse disk it won't fit, since I have a 120gb disk with only 40gb free.
Hope someone can explain me this!

However, note that you should never erase the free space on the current startup volume.  the startup volume is constantly active with things like swap files, and this can cause disk utility to behave oddly.  Start the computer up from the installation DVD and run disk utility from there.

  • Confusing Spaces behavior

Say I have two Safari windows open in different spaces, and I have a different application in front, either on the same space as one Safari window, or in a third space. When I cmd-tab back to Safari, what's the logic behind which Safari window it jumps back to?
Damned if I can figure it out. It's really frustrating.

As the original poster mentioned, moving to a specific space is not always the solution; often you (well, not you, as you stated, but others) want to go directly to an application. Avoiding Command-tab isn't the solution: Apple's fixing it to behave correctly is the solution. Even if you keep all your applications separate (which I can't, there aren't enough spaces for that), there are several that work better when assigned to Every Space, so you have some forced sharing anyway. The Finder, for instance, by default is in every space and Command-Tabbing to that becomes quite an issue in regard to which windows will show up based upon which space you were in when you opened them and which space you're in now - and you don't have the option of other keyboard switching methods when something's in Every Space.
There can be up to 16 Spaces. Are you really running more than 16 applications at one time? If so, run Activity Monitor and see how much CPU you are using in those applications. My guess would be that your computer is running slower than it would if you had fewer applications open at one time
The Finder is not in every Space by default. The Desktop is on every Space by default. You can assign the Finder to be in every Space, but you need to set that up in Spaces. And the Finder is not a regular application so you cannot select it as you normally would with other applications. The Finder.app is in Macintosh HD/System/Library/CoreServices. I like having the Finder in every Space so I can open files from the Finder windows more easily, regardless of which Space I’m in.
Yes, it's sad we have to adapt to the software when it should be the other way around!
We always need to adapt to how applications are made. For example, you may want to have the menus on the side rather than on the top, but you cannot change it easily.
But Apple didn't think it out well enough even for you - have you noticed how, if you switch back to a space with multiple windows open, the one you left on top is not always on top? This drives me crazy in Mail - I'm composing a message, leave to check something in a Word document, say, or a PDF that I'm talking about - and going back to Mail puts the Viewer window on top, and my half-done msg window beneath it. I just used Ctrl-1 to leave this space I'm typing in (for Safari), and Ctrl-2 to come right back - and this message window was obscured by a Finder window - because the Finder lives in Space 2 also, so I wound up in the Finder!
I agree that sometimes when switching Spaces it will lose focus from the window you wanted to another window. This happens to me most often when switching to Safari. But enough people have informed Apple of the problem that it should be fixed in the next version update. It is annoying, but doesn’t drive me crazy. Perhaps because I was already crazy.

  • Strange / weird  SPACES behavior

    Guys,
I had something weird occurring (for a limited occurrence time) with spaces: I have 6 spaces activated on my MBP: yesterday, when I scrolled vertically the mouse pointer (bluetooth Magic Mouse) toward the bottom of the screen (hence making the dock automatically appear according to my preferences) spaces automatically activated and caused the passage to the space below the one currently active (i.e. if I was on space 1 it was going to space 4 or if I was on space 2 it went to space 5). I tried to see if something weird was in the space and or exposé preferences (in the general preferences) and I just unticked / ticked the automatic reversion to the space where an application is open, when clicking on this application (I hope to have been clear).
After some play with these preferences, the problem did not reoccur again.
    Please:
    - have you ever heard about something similar?
    - Which .plist might I delete in order to be sure to have killed a latent corrupt configuration (I have already reset finder even after the problem was not reoccurring)
    - do you confirm that it is stupid to think about a virus / malware?.... (I have full firewall activated and this happened only after updating via adobe site all the programs of my CS5 production premium programs..).
Thank you for your kind help / feedback
    Cheers
    Emanuele
P.S.: no application / program was open but finder alone

  • Odd storage space behavior for flash drive in USB port of E4200

Using Mac OS 10.6.8 on a MacPro 2x2.8 ghz quad core intel xeon with 20GB ram
I have a Linksys E4200 with Linksys Smart WiFi
I have an unknown brand USB Flash drive in the E4200 router. The USB Storage status tab reads I have used 68MB of 1.87GB of storage space. The Mac Finder window reads the drive as having 2.8MB available. I have refreshed, disconnected and reconnected many times.
I tried to copy a 49.5GB TIF file into the drive through the Finder and I get this error:
Then I tried to copy a 2.8MB PDF file and got the same error.
Keep in mind I was just able to copy this over yesterday--and delete it. Now I cannot copy it over. This same incident of the router changing it's mind happened with multiple folders and various files. First it doesn't take it. Then it takes it. Then it doesn't take it.
Here's a weird error I got when trying to copy a game emulator:
When I refresh in Linksys Smart Wifi, I am still told there is plenty of space.
Now I deleted everything in the drive and successfully copied over a bunch of tiny 233KB files. Smart Wifi shows over 1GB of space remaining.
Then I tried to copy a 160MB folder of small data files. Got the same not enough space error. So I tried a 7.5MB file. Same space error.
Does anyone have any clue why this is happening? I tried to searach the forum and did not find anything similar.

If that's the storage device then that's ok. From what you have posted this is just a 2GB usb flash stick. So if you cannot copy more files to it, it could either be the file format  you are transferring is not supported or the disc space is not enough. Connect the flash drive directly to your computer and test it that way. If you still cannot copy any files then I suggest that you reformat the usb flash stick.

  • Spaces behavior in 10.5.3

i noticed that if you click on safari then activate the spaces while safari is opening safari browser will overlap whatever tiles are in spaces. is that normal?

I tested some more, and it seems all apps are affected and it's a repeatable problem.
For example, if I click System Preferences on the Apple menu, then quickly move the mouse to an active screen corner (lower left, in my case) to launch Spaces, the System Preferences window will open over top of the Spaces matrix. The screen looks like the image posted earlier in this thread - there's a application window in the middle and all the shrunken Spaces in the background.

  • Creating a new user account and curious log in behavior...

First off I'd just like to apologize if that is not the correct place to be posting this, but after looking around I don't see a perfect fit for this topic anywhere, so I figured here should be okay. Also I want to apologize if this turns out to be a rather lengthy post, I just want to ensure that I supply all info...
Okay, so about a month ago I recognized that my current user account is slowly but surely taking longer and longer to "boot up" after I put in my password and tell it to log in. What usually happens is that I click log in, the background image and taskbar almost immediately pop up but nothing else (finder icons, dock, and the multiple icons in the taskbar which include the airport signal, user name, bluetooth status, battery strength, volume, and my iChat and Adium status) the only things to immediately "activate" in the taskbar are the clock and spotlight.
As of late when I log in something especially strange is happening in that after the 5 or so minutes it takes the dock, rest of taskbar, and finder icons to appear my PB will play the default Apple sound of me emptying trash, rather there is anything actually in the trash or not. It dosen't delete the objects in the trash (if any, as I usually keep it empty), just simply plays the sound. I'm not sure if it playing this sound ties in any with the lagging log in times, I just wanted to mention it as the log in times have slowed down considerably since this sound started.
Bottom line given that there is no way that I know of fixing this problem, I am planning to simply create a new user account. Actually I have already created the new account (by the way, it logs in literally instantaneously, and does not make the strange trash being emptied sound) but was looking for info on how to get all of my files from one account to the other. Unfortunately for me everytime that I install a program and the dialog box pops up asking if you want to install it on all user accounts or just the current one I always click "just the current one" (please don't ask why, as there is seriously no reasoning to this at all...), so is there a way to transfer my current programs from one user account to the other without reinstalling??? It's actually not that many programs I'm talking about here (Shapeshifter, Xounds, XFactor, AIM, Adium, Cocktail, Toast, Popcorn, iPod Rip, and Office), I just figured that if I can simply transfer rather than reinstalling them, it would be a lot easier.
However my 2 primary concerns are my iTunes and iPhoto libraries (3330 songs and 4182 pcitures respectively), considering that I've spent literally hours making countless playlist in iTunes, and countless folders, slideshows, and books in iPhoto, if I was to lose all this it would truly be a mess.
I know I'm probably making a big deal out of this and it's an extremely easy and basic process, please just pardon this still pretty new Mac user and help me out:) Also if anybody else has experienced the log in slow down or strange trash being emptied sound I would be glad to hear your experiences.
    Thanks in advance!!!
    Mervyn

    Hi Mervin,
Bottom line given that there is no way that I know of fixing this problem, I am planning to simply create a new user account.
You can do that (but I wouldn't) this KB article outlines how:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=155373
Basically you will copy the folders within your old home to replace the folders in the new home. Here is a list of specific folders if you decide to do that but a better solution would be to sort your existing user.
Here where your important data is stored ("~" stands for "Home"):
    Your Data in Documents
~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Application Support/iCal(copy the whole folder)
Also in ~ / Library/ Application Support (copy whatever else you need)
~ /Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist * This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.
    ~ / Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
    ~ / Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    ~ / Library/iMovie (copy the whole folder)
    ~/ Pictures/iPhoto Library
    If you want cookies:
    ~/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    ~/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
so is there a way to transfer my current programs from one user account to the other without reinstalling???
As for applications, they should all be in your Application folder(there is only one) and available to ALL users, unless you have put "limitations" or "parental controls" on the account.
Now to the best course of action:
To find the issue affecting your existing user account, follow these steps:
Log back into your normal user account:
    1. Navigate to ~(yourhome/library/fonts - drag this folder to the desktop.
         • Restart and test your applications.
         • If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( Likely suspects are Time RO & Helvetica Fractions, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)
    2. Check Preferences Thoroughly;
         • Navigate to ~(yourhome/library/preferences drag this folder to the desktop.
         • Restart and test your applications.
         • If this works, save the old preferences folder somewhere else or on disk, name it "old prefs" .
** Note: A very important file is the "com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in the Preferences folder which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences (hold this one and replace if your problem is not with Mail).
You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them. (Or if you have the time and inclination, "cherry pick" through until you find the problem one or two.)
    3. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
       • Navigate to yourhome/library.
       • Get Info (Command - i) on folders for apps you are having problems with.
       • Open the "Ownership & permissions" disclosure triangle.
       • Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
    • Click on "apply to all"
       • If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same      procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are      having trouble with.
    Note:
The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.
If the isssue persists navigate to ~/library/caches and drag this folder to the trash, then log out and back or restart. There is no need to replace this folder.
    Good luck, let us know.

  • Curious numeric constant behavior

Numeric constants taken from the palette have this peculiar property that their type can be changed depending on what you type in.
For instance, grab an "orange" constant and type "1" in it, and it will turn blue. Grab a "blue" constant and type "1.0" and it will turn orange. Neat.
Now, what happens if you have the following situation:
Well, for a fraction of a second, you'll get this:
    and then, right after that:
    Darn! The conversion failed...
If you drop a constant from the palette or select the blue "1" above and Right-Click>>Representation>>DBL, of course things work fine and you get the intended result:
    Feature?

    This stuff is everywhere:
That constant also has its "Adapt to Entered Data" unchecked. So basically if I wanted to also use that constant 4 to do a bunch of double precision calculations, I would have as many coercion dots instead of one?
That's arm twisting IMO. I just don't like the idea of having a functionality (adapt to entered data) which is sometimes available and sometimes not, due to some internal decision of NI.
But I guess, reading this, this and that, that I am pretty alone on this one... :-(

  • 10.5.3 breaks Spaces

After updating to 10.5.3, Spaces now treats Finder as an application. So if you navigate to a page with no applications running and then back to a page that has applications running, Finder has the focus instead of the frontmost app.
    Very annoying!

The new Spaces behavior is very annoying indeed. Spaces is one of the best features in Leopard and I use it _all the time_. However, as I mostly use applications where you input text (Safari, Word, Mail etc.), and are working on several documents in several spaces simultaneously, I need the text cursor to stay in each space where I left it. Now, as soon as you leave a space, and pass an empty space or a space with a finder window, the Finder grabs the focus.
I don't know what benefits Apple thinks the new behavior has, but for me, it makes Spaces useless. As the Finder grabs the focus most of the time when I leave a space, now I have to click with the mouse every time I return to a space to continue writing. I could also use Cmd+Tab, to get the focus of the application I want, but if I wanted to use Cmd+Tab, I wouldn't be using Spaces in the first place!
Apple, please make a checkbox in the Spaces preferences where we can turn this new feature on or off.
I really want to upgrade my machines to 10.5.3, as I noticed Safari was considerably faster, but I am so dependent on the old behavior of spaces, as I switch spaces hundreds of times a day, that I will have to stay with 10.5.2 for now.

  • Using 'color space suite'/ColorServicesProc

    Hi,
I wrote a custom color picker plugin for Photoshop CS3. Now I have to extend it's functionality.
To do this I need to convert the input color (whatever color space) to RGB.
I'v tried the 'HostCSConvertColor' from the PIUtilities but it gave me wrong result RGB.
I selected sRGB IEC61966-2.1 for my monitor.
I selected Lab = (54,0,0) color for foreground color which is RGB(129,129, 129).
The HostCSConvertColor converts it into RGB = (0, 55, 222)
Is there a sample or some documentation using the color space suite properly and/or ColorServicesProc ?
    Thanks,
    TZolee

When the picker invoked by PS it gets the initial color from PS in Lab space (PIPickerParams->pickParms).
I just use that colorComponents without any modifications to call the HostCSConvertColor (just copied to a temporary place).
Yes I know that the Lab color values signed. I took a deep research before I wrote this plugin.
    I've already read the documentation.
I've already tested ~20 Lab color and the HostCSConvertColor was always wrong.

  • LAB Swatches produce different colors in ID, PS & Illy

Hello. I have CS4 and have sychronized the color management settings. I have a set of swatches in .ase format that were defined as LAB process colors. When I load them into InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator they all three produce different CMYK values - differences large enough that they can't be the result of rounding errors. This surprises me given that I've sychronized the color management settings. Do each of these three programs use a different formula/set of instructions for LAB>CMYK conversion?

Make a Spot swatch in Lab Mode in an RGB or CMYK doc in Illustrator
(not as Process swatch, not in RGB, not in CMYK)
    Save as PDF
Oben doc in Photoshop in  Lab mode
Measure Lab values - they are the same as in Illustrator.
    Place doc in InDesign
InDesign doesn't change Lab numbers in placed graphic.
So far it´s guaranteed that Lab values are preserved across the three programs.
The appearance depends on local color settings and gamut clipping issues.
Even if the color settings should be globally the same - there are local settings,
like the document color mode in Illustrator. Which settings RGB or CMYK are
correct for Lab docs? No idea, I'm not bothering about appearance in this case,
because there is another ugly problem already luring: gamut clipping.
A Lab or Spot can be in-gamut or out-of-gamut for a specified RGB space and
    specified CMYK-space.
Spots by Lab values which are definitely in-gamut or out-of-gamut for sRGB
    resp. ISOCoatede-v2(eci) are found here:
    http://www.fho-emden.de/~hoffmann/munsell15052009.pdf
If we choose Spots with values in-gamut for sRGB, then we have good chance
that they will appear identical in all three programs.
The whole workflow shouldn't be confused by early conversions into a CMYK
space. A ready PDF, still with Lab colors like the mentionend one (except for
text and line black/gray, which is in CMYK K-only) can be converted (as already
mentioned in my first post), into CMYK by Acrobat Pro, which should concern
only the Lab colors, not CMYK K-only parts.
A preview by Softproof in Photoshop (document Lab, Preview ISOCoated-v2(eci)
for instance, can be used to detect ugly effects of gamut clipping early.
    Where is Color Management involved?
    a) in the monitor appearance of Lab values. This should be identical for in-gamut
    swatches.
    b) in the final conversion of Lab to CMYK. Precisely at only one stage - in Acrobat.
Even if the appearance should not be identical - the Lab values are nowhere changed
in the workflow. Lab values are never out-of-gamut in Lab space.
Another example: Lab data of the mentioned doc were imported in Photoshop,
exported in groups as files (probably as *.ase  / Adobe Swatch Exchange, but here
I'm not sure about) and used in Illustrator for experimental Tracing graphics:

  • GC suddenly halves size of Old space causing major GC thrashing

A large, stable application suddenly started to exhibit strange GC behavior: the size of the Old generation started to slowly decrease. Now, after 11 days, the size of the Old generation is roughly 1/2 what it has been for three years. As a result we are enduring major GCs continually.
    Specifics:
JDK 1.5.05_05, running on 16cpu SunFire V890 with 16GB RAM.
    -server -Xmx10g -Xms10g -XX:NewSize=1g -XX:MaxNewSize=1g -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=5000 -XX:GCTimeRatio=19
In short, we have a fixed New space size of 1G, and a roughly 9G Old space.
As you can see, we are not allowing adapative resizing. A "jstat -gccapacity" log shows that the minimum and maximum Old size (OGCMN and OGCMX) are 9G (which is what we expect and have always seen), but the current Old size (OGC) is now down to 4.6G, and is at 99.96% capacity. OGC has been at 9G for years until 11 days ago, when it started to steadily drop.
With both jconsole and jstat we can see the New space happily bouncing between 0 and 1.0G in size, with lots of minor GCs (sub-second in duration). The Full GCs seemily occur at any point in the New space's capacity (i.e., they do not always occur when New is full).
Another odd observation: the major GC's are occuring nearly every 10 minutes, +/30 seconds of variation. There are no external GC invocations occuring. The app does not have RMI and is not a database client. No soft/weak references are in use. No software change was made prior to the start of the shrinking-old-space behavior.
This is a typical high-capacity on-line application servicing about 300,000 transactions daily, and creates billions of objects in doing so, in which the Old space is storing customer information and transactions; in other words a steadily growing body of long-lived objects and a ferocious number of very short-term objects. It is rare (prior to this) to see major GCs. Daily maintenance is performed to cull objects (e.g., old transactions) out of the Old space, and a nightly major GC is invoked in order to avoid major GCs during our busy business hours.
It looks to us like the JVM/GC has suddenly decided to start resizing downward our Old space and is ignoring nearly 5GB of available space. We have detailed jstat logs available.

The drop in the old generation size is a combination of a bug
(6524727) and the 5 second pause time goal you used.
That bug talks about the young generation minimum size not being
honored but may also allow the old generation to shrink so that the overall
heap falls below the -Xms minimum.
The GC ergonomics is trying to get to the 5 second goal by
reducing the size of the old generation. I think in this case it
is just not achievable. In the jstat logs I saw full collections taking
in the 10's of seconds. The workaround is to turn off GC
    ergonomics with -XX:-UseAdaptiveSizePolicy.

  • Lab schedule

trying to book CCIE storage lab in the last couple of weeks but no luck. it always says no seat is available. has anyone seen the same thing? I heard the the schedule system allows you to book for the next 6 months. I thought there aren't that many candidates for this track...

I am also trying to book the lab exam, but no luck even I put the date as 04/13/2008. I opened a case in the on-line support center, asking why it is so difficult to schedule the lab exam.
The reply is "at this time there are no slots available for the Storage Lab exam. You will need to continue to monitor the online scheduling tool for slots that become available due to cancellations"
Does anyone know how many slots per month for storage lab? CCIE storage is not hot comparing with the others, don't know why the lab space is so limited.

  • RGB to CIE lab conversion

    Hi All,
I want to convert an RGB image into CIE lab color space. I found a program here on the forum.
I am attaching it with the post.  Run the program test0.vi on the sample image.
I am able to convert the image into lab space however the VI is taking too much time to execute.
    Is there a faster implementation?
    Thank You.

I'm pretty sure there isn't a VI to do the reverse conversion, so you'll need to code it yourself.  The NI implementation of La*b* seems to be a little non-standard - see http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/La-b-colour-conversion/td-p/1646458 - I think the issue is that LabVIEW doesn't do a gamma correction, whereas most other software does.
