Curious to Know why use iCal over PalmDesktop

Hello all,
Please feel free to provide experiences and thoughts on the benefits of using iCal vs. PalmDesktop.
I have recently made the switch from PC - and am still in the new play phase with all of the programs avail. to Mac users. I am sure there are reasons both good and bad for using certain programs, just figured the crew here on the Apple forums would be great place to start.
Thanx,

iBook & MBP

I needed a scheduler app a few months after iCal came out. It didn't do all the scheduler tasks I needed it to do that you can find in all the other apps but it looked like a great program, even though it was very rough around the edges. I decided to go with iCal over palm because I thought the palm app, though very advanced and did everything I needed it to do, would be discontinued soon and wouldn't be guaranteed to work in future Mac OS updates and because I thought even though iCal still needed a lot of work, it was just released so surely it would get much better soon. I made the wrong choice. Not only does palm do everything, it also still works and probably will continue to work for another decade. iCal on the other hand has not seen a significant update in a couple of years and is still almost as incomplete and rough around the edges as it ever was. Don't make my mistake man, now my workflow and event history is locked into iCal and it's too late to change. Palm is uglier but it does the job much better.
I come to this forum every few months to see if there's been any movement in iCal that I don't know about, but there never is. I've sent Apple a zillion messages and feedbacks telling them to give iCal a significant update already, but they seem to have all but abandoned this app. When I read about projects that are planned for newer versions of the Mac OS I never see any sign that they are doing any work on this app at all. If anybody has information to the contrary I'd love to hear it, but for now I'd have to advise you to not hitch your wagon to this program that Apple treats like a redheaded step child.

  • Why use int over double?

    i am using the book beginning java 2. and there is a example showing how the math class works
    the program calculates the radius of a circle in feet and inches given that the area is 100 square feet:
    public class MathCalc
    public static void main(String[]args)
    double radius = 0.0;
    double circlearea= 0.0;
    int feet = 0;
    int inches = 0;
    radius = Math.sqrt(circleArea/Math.PI);
    feet = (int)Math.floor(radius);
    inches = (int)Math.round (12.0 * (radius-feet));
    System.out.println( Feet + "feet" + inches + "inches");
    the output will be 5 feet 8 inches.
    my question is why bother with using 'int', why not simply use 'double' for all your variables?
    in feet and inches 'int' has been used as the result would have been a floating value. so casting as been used. But doesnt that complicate things?cant one just use long for all variables and forgot about worrying whether the value will fit or not.
    thanks

    my question is why bother with using 'int', why not
    simply use 'double' for all your variables?There are several reasons to use int (when appropriate) rather than double. More generally, there are several reasons to use integer arithmetic instead of floating point.
    First, integer arithmetic is precise whereas floating point arithmetic is always subject to imprecision. E.g. 6 / 2 always equals 3, 6.0 / 2.0 may equal something like 3.000000000000001.
    Second, (related to the above) the results of integer arithmetic operations will not vary from one machine to the next. The results of the same floating point operation may vary from one machine to the next.
    Third, integer arithmetic is always faster than floating point.

    in feet and inches 'int' has been used as the result
    would have been a floating value. so casting as been
    used. But doesnt that complicate things?The results are cast back to an int because it would look silly and meaningless to print a result of, for instance, 5.00000001 feet, 8.00045 inches.
    cant one just
    use long for all variables and forgot about worrying
    whether the value will fit or not. No. You should never disregard whether the results of arithmetic operations will overflow the size of the word you are using. Even though a long type can contain a pretty huge number, you can still easily overflow it and get nonsensical results.
    Also, a 32 bit word is the native size for most of the machines most of us use. This means that arithmetic operations are fastest on int types (for most of us). This shouldn't be a primary design consideration but it should be taken into account.

  • I don't know why my iCal won't accept my Google password for syncing purposes.  I just updated the password last night. It says this: "The password may have entered is incorrect"

    My ICal, keeps saying: "The password may have been entered incorrectly. Reenter the password for account “Google” on the CalDAV server “calendar.google.com.”

    Greetings Joe,
    What version of the Mac OS are you running (Apple > About this Mac)?
    Try:
    Go to iCal > Preferences > Accounts and remove all unneeded accounts especially Gmail / Google.
    Go to iCal > Quit iCal
    Go to Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access
    Use the search bar to locate anything called "calendar.google.com" and then delete it.
    Go to Keychain Access > Keychain FirstAid > Repair
    Once complete go to Keychain Access > Quit Keychain Access
    Restart the computer.
    Go to iCal > Preferences > Accounts and re-enter your Google account.
    Hope that helps!

  • Why use Flex over Flash 8

    I would like to know what makes Flex more useful than Flash
    8? Is Flex basically replacing the Flash SDK? I looked into Flex a
    little bit and it looks like it has an awesome integration of Flash
    and XML. I was also wondering if Flex integrates other development
    technologies with Flash, such as PHP.
    Currently I am working for a gaming company and would like to
    get Flex pretty soon.
    -Thanks in Advance :)
    Flash Development at
    Vectorflash.net

    i think it is not "more useful" but both got different
    strength.
    flash is for animation, presentation, interactive website
    & etc but flex is more to web application.

  • Help. Does anyone know why my voice-over tracks go keep going off-line?  Im not deleting anything

    After voicing my project, I reboot the system so it would burn my DVD.  I come back to the project and the first two voiceovers are in red(meaning offline)?
    Thank you for your help.  Jeff

    I would check your drive with Disk Utility. Maybe it needs to be repaired?

  • Why use XE?

    Why use XE over the other versions of 10g?

    i would suggest XE isnt that good for most development work as it doesnt incoude a lot of the features a lot of "enterprise people" needs.
    Yuo should always develop and always test on the versions that you are going to deploy with.
    Dont forget you can use Oracle for free gernally in development at no cost

  • SWFObject 2, why use it?

    I'd really like to know why using SWFObject 2 to embed my Flex SWF files is superior to using the html file generated by Flex Builder 3.  I will admit that I'm not a real hot-shot HTML/JS coder but as far as I can see there is little to recommend SWFObject 2.
    All thoughts and options welcome.

    By the way, here's what your HTML Template file might look like with SWFObject:
    <!-- saved from url=(0014)about:internet -->
    <html lang="en">
    <head>
       <title>${title}</title>
       <style>
       body { margin: 0px; overflow: hidden; }
       </style>
       <script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/swfobject/2.1/swfobject.js"></script>
       <script type="text/javascript">
       var flashVars = {
            testVar: "value"
         var params = {
            allowFullScreen: "true",
            allowScriptAccess: "sameDomain"
       swfobject.embedSWF( "${swf}.swf", "swf", "${width}", "${height}", "10.0.0", "playerProductInstall.swf", flashVars, params );
       </script>
    </head>
    <body scroll="no">
       <div id="swf">
          <p>Alternative content</p>
        </div>
    </body>
    </html>
    Note that the file still uses the ${variables} so you don't have to hand write anything.

  • How do you remove back up data from the memory storage? my storage data states that i have over 80gb of data used for back ups and i dont know why as i use a external hard drive as a time machine .now my 250gb flash storage is nearly full

    how do you remove back up data from the memory storage? my storage data states that i have over 80gb of data used for back ups and i dont know why as i use a external hard drive as a time machine .now my 250gb flash storage is nearly full.. HELP!

    When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
    See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.

    The beeps could be caused by something as simple as a loose internal wire or connection.  If it is under warranty (not sure how long that is, as WD drives range from 1 to 5 years depending on the model's series - I think "my passport" drives are 3 years) you could contact WD and ask them about it.
    If it is out of warranty, you could also try opening the case and check the connections - the drive may be fine, and there have been posts on TomsHardware forums of people getting the beeps, opening up the case and the drive is fine, just some wire worked loose.

  • Why would you use JavaFX over JavaEE or JavaSE?

    Just curious why you would use FX over the others? Is it because of the GUI, and some added features, or what makes FX better?
    Also what exactly is the differences between the 3? It seems like SE is the basic, then EE is used for client-server and maybe security and such? FX seems to just have advanced GUI and stuff like that? Does anyone have a link or a list of what features are different and such?
    Thanks a lot!!!

    I usually use swing, but I am starting a new business application for real world use, so I want it to be the best it can be. FX's Gui is great, but is it worth it to start using that right away? I also want to be able to use 3D, and as someone said you can do 2D in a 3D space, so that is basically what I need for now, but I would like to be able to do full 3D.JFX isn't exactly built to do 3D stuff right now. But neither is Java2D (the base for AWT and Swing), so nothing is different really.
    So what I really want to know is what is the differences between SE and EE?One is "Java", the other is a specification. For more information I refer to Google.

    I'm sorry to hear that.
    I'm not affiliated w/ the developer, just a happy user that gave up fighting the apple podcast app a while ago.  I used to have a bunch of smart playlists in itunes for my podcasts, and come home every day and pathologically synced my phone as soon as I walked in the door, and again before I walked out the door in the morning.
    Since my wife was doing this too, we were fighting over who's turn it was to sync their phone.
    Since I've switched to Downcast, I no longer worry about syncing my phone to itunes at all.  I can go weeks between syncs.
    Setup a "playlist" in downcast (ex., "Commute") and add podcasts to that playlist.  Add another playlist ("walk" or "workout") and add different podcasts to that one.
    Set podcast priorities on a per-feed basis (ex., high priority for some daily news feeds, medium priority for some favorite podcasts, lower priority for other stuff).  Downcast will play the things in the priority you specify, and within that priority, it will play in date order (oldest to newest).
    Allegedly, it will also sync your play status to other devices, although that is not a feature I currently use and can't vouch for.  It uses apple's iCloud APIs, so to some extent may be limited by what Apple's APIs can do.

  • Hi, my mac has stopped playing some avi files (that used to work). I can see the video. Does anyone know why and what i can do? My version of quicktime is 7.6.9.

    Hi i have avi files saved in iphoto that i used to be able to play through quicktime. However in the last few weeks i cannot play many of these files. I can see the videos and click on them but nothing happens (i have version 7.6.9 of quicktime). Does anyone know why this has happened and what i can do about this?
    Thanks.

    What do you mean by what audio/video formats are involved? These are all files from several digital cameras.
    As previously stated, AVI is a file container. It is somewhat old and its originator, Microsoft, dropped official support of it over a decade ago. However, it remains popular with PC users since almost any valid audio and/or video compression format can be stuffed to the file which synchronizes the content by interleaving the individual audio and video frames. The compression format is the specific manner in which the audio and video data are encoded as it is placed in the AVI container. You can find the compression format by inspecting the file in the Finder "Info" window, or in the "Inspector" window of the QT player (or other media player) if the file can be opened.
    For instance, one popular compression combination would be to place DivX encoded video and MP3 audio in an AVI file container. However, neither DivX nor MP3 is natively supported by the QT player. (Although iTunes will natively support the MP3 audio.) Therefore, people who wish to play such files in the QT 7 Player would normally install either the DivX component or Perian but not both. Either installation will independently play such files in the QT Player, but if both are installed, the file will usually stop working since these two codecs can create a playback conflict.
    However, the AVI container could just as easily contain DV along with DV audio. In this case, the file should play correctly in QT since this compression format is natively supported by the basic component configuration that comes in every current OS installation. Therefore, if such files suddenly stopped playing, this could be an indication that a component has been moved or deleted or that your system or QT embedded structure has become corrupted.

    My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

    Anyone know why uploads contacts disappear from the iPhone 5?
    Half of my number is suddenly gone, and this happens over and over again?
    Kata-*******-stroff! Grateful for answers?

    do you sync your contacts with an application in your computer? or use iCloud?
    I can't tell you why the contacts disappear but you can get them back without much hassle by syncing through iTunes with your computer.
    do you regularly make backups?  if so, you can restore your iPhone using the backups and get your contacts back in your iPhone.
    It is strange that half of your contacts are gone over and over again.  Do you have Groups that are unchecked in your iPhone?  If so, the contacts in those groups will not appear in your contacts list but they are in your iPhone and be recovered by re-checking the group name.
