Currenrmember behavior in SSAS vs Essbase

Hi Experts,
Currently we are migrating Essbase Cube to SSAS cubes.
And we developed some calculated members in SSAS similarly as Essbase with current member functionally.
We we are getting strange result.
Please could tell me the Pros and cons of using currentmember functionality in SSAS.
and what is the difference between the EESBASE currenmember behavior and SSAS currentmember behavior?
Thanks & Best regards,

Hi,
don't know EESBASE  but in SSAS if you are performing some action with currentmember then you
have to use that dimension in cross join
lets say if you have dimension product and you are performing some calculation using Product dimension
with
Member Test as  SUM ( [Product].[Product].currentmember,[Measure].X)
SELECT  {Test} on columns ,
Non Empty ([Product].[Product].[Product]) on Rows from
your cube
if you are not having you product dimension in cross join then result will not correct /or some error value

Hope this will help you !!!

  • SSAS Tabular model Performance Issue

    Hello,
We have strange behavior with SSAS tabular model. The Model size is approx. 40GB in memory. Our production server has 200GB memory. Most of the users access the cube via Excel 2013 (64bit). We have been noticing that the performance starts degrading from
the next day after the Analysis service has been restarted or the server rebooted. The day either one of them is performed we get good response but then the next day response times becomes 2 to 3 times more than on the 1st day. Is this something which anyone
else has experienced. We are entering in a mode where we are required to restart the service almost everyday.
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Deepak

Why are you sure role based security is the culprit? Immediately after cube processing or immediately after ClearCache does the report perform fast for a user without any role based security filters? I would recommend reviewing the methodology on page
35 of the tabular performance guide to see if it is a storage engine or formula engine bottleneck and report back.

Thanks YuliaKlimov, I can reproduce this issue, but I cannot explain the different behaviors between SSAS 2008 and 2008R2. As a workaround,
could you try to use dynamic set or create statics set but with fixed member for example:
    CREATE
    SET CURRENTCUBE.[Prior Month] AS
    [Date].[Date Key].&[20050723].PrevMember
    , DISPLAY_FOLDER = 'Relative Period Sets';
Personally, I think your set is dynamic set, because the currentmember is changed base on current selection. You can also submit this issue

  • What is the difference between "create set" and "create dynamic set"?

What is the difference between  "create set" and "create dynamic set"?
we have a complete cube ready for production that was tested and working without any issues in non-r2. we found that some "create set" assignments don't work in R2. But when changed to from  "create set" to "create dynamic set"?
they are working, However, not sure how it will impact other areas of the cube.

  • SSAS grand total behavior

    Hi all,
Is there any documentation over there with SSAS total behavior?
When you explore the data is there any way to change the grand total behavior?
As you can see in the "cantidad" measure, it shows the total by sum() of all the values.
"% dto linea" its a calculated member and it does average.
"importe total pedido" should be 4200 instead of 23275,31.
I think we need SCOPE() but not sure how to implement it.
As usually, thanks a lot for your help

    Hi Chris:
I´ve been trying something but it dodnt work.
I want to do the following:
Purchid its the order Id (pc-13/00473)from purchtable, estado its status but from inventTransTable, and recid it´s the recordID as shown in the first screen capture.
In the first screen capture shows 7.5 for "discount %". I want it to show 10.
The screen shows discount % by purchtable."order no.", inventtrans."transaction status", inventtrans."recid".
the values are stored also in inventtrans table, it´s filled by a join with several tables.
A purchline can hold several transactions.
In this case, I want to grand total 10 for discount%, not 7.5 (30/4 it´s what the cube is doing) or 40.
For "importe total pedido" (total order amount) column I´d like to show 4200 instead of 23275.31.
    how could I do this?
i´ve been trying this, but it doesnt work.
the calculation was PL_LINEPERCENT (from inventrans, it´s also a fact. table)/ (number of rows count measure)
    SUM(
    DESCENDANTS([PurchTable].[PURCHID].CURRENTMEMBER,[PurchTable].[PURCHID])
    AND
    DESCENDANTS([InventTrans].[Estado].CURRENTMEMBER,[InventTrans].[Estado])
    AND
    DESCENDANTS([InventTrans].[RECID].CURRENTMEMBER,[InventTrans].[RECID])
    [PL LINEPERCENT]/[Recuento Fact Invent Trans])
    thanks a lot!

  • Tools to migrate Essbase cubes to SSAS and Hyperion reports to SSRS

    Hi,
Is there any tool available to migrate

  • Sporadic behavior of Cube in SSAS 2008 R2

    Hi All,
I am working on a MS BI project. The details and the issue are as follows:
Issue: Everything works fine as usual when the cube is processed and reports are deployed. After some days, the reports start returning incorrect data. I cannot say incorrect data in specific
but the base measures become null and if we take the original query from SSRS, run in MDX query window or browse it from the cube for the same selection criteria, the base measures show null while calculated memebers in cube sometimes return data/sometimes
    not.
And if we remove any of the attribute from the select clause or remove/add any thing into subcube of mdx query gives correct results.
Strange thing here is keeping everything same, clear the cube cache or reprocessing the cube resolves the issue.
    Details:
    The SQL server version: (Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (SP2) - 10.50.4000.0 (X64)   Jun 28 2012 08:36:30   Copyright (c) Microsoft
Corporation  Enterprise Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7601: Service Pack 1) )
Cube: The cube contains around 45 dimensions All of the dimensions are directly related to the fact except 4 dimensions.
Among 4 dimensions(parentchild dimension1, parent child dimension2, Dimension3 and Dimension4) above , 2 are parent child dimensions. Parent Child dimension 1 is related to the fact through many to many and parent child dimension 2 is related to the
fact through reference relationship. Dimension3 is related to fact through many to many. Dimension4 related to the fact through cascading many to many.
    And cube is pure MOLAP.
SSRS : SSRS reports fetch the data from cube. In MDX, we are using subcube to limit the data and slice the data. And the
parentchild dimension2, Dimension3 mentioned above is always a part of the subcube.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Dinesh

It may be worth installing the latest cumulative update on your dev server to see if that fixes it. There are a few fixes in cumulative updates post SP2 that might possibly address this:

SSRS Expressions: Part 1 - Program Flow
PT: "A very comprehensive article about program flow expressions. Nice job. I'm sure many will benefit from this article. Just a little feedback about some terminology that could be more clear: The entire statement that is
typically used to set a property value for an object in an SSRS report is an "expression". Each of the three programming constructs you've mentioned (e.g. IIF, SWITCH & CHOOSE) are "functions" and not expressions or statements."

  • Flattening Essbase Measures in OBIEE 11g

    Hi all,
I'm using OBIEE 11g. After importing a cube from Essbase to the physical layer in the RPD, I'm choosing "Convert measure dimension to flat measures" to flatten the measures. Now I have all the measures as a flat list. However, the "Measures" dimension/hierarchy still exists in the physical layer. I find this strange.
Then when I drag the cube to the business model layer, that "Measures" dimension/hierarchy isn't brought to the business model layer. I think this is correct, because the measures are already flattened, therefore there should not be any measure dimension/hierarchy in the business model layer.
    My questions:
    1. If the measure dimension/hierarchy is not used anymore in the business model layer, why does it still exist in the physical layer?
    2. What is the impact if I remove it from the physical layer? (Note: I tried this, so far no error, but not sure if later on I will encounter error because of this)
Any thoughts on this? Thank you very much!

    My questions:
    1. If the measure dimension/hierarchy is not used anymore in the business model layer, why does it still exist in the physical layer? This is normal behavior with OBIEE 11g. It will still be there in physical layer.
    2. What is the impact if I remove it from the physical layer? (Note: I tried this, so far no error, but not sure if later on I will encounter error because of this)There shudn't be any future problem incase you wanna delete it during developemet BUT think of a situation during Incremental Essbase Cube Import to OBIEE which was not possible in 10g (straight Forwardly).
I'd suggest to keep it as it is in Physical Layer inorder to avaoid any future issues/enhanced requirements.
    Hope its clear Stewart !!

as there are alternatives, especially in this scenario. You could generate a query using the sys.databases view and let it print out the database name along with the use statement. In addition to this and as the statement has to be run with a high privileged
account as schema information is secured as well, it should be made safe to SQL injection. In many case in the statements there is just a concatentation of values used. You can easily inject code in here, Also make sure that names / object identifiers are

  • Display Session issue in Essbase

    Hi,
we currently upgraded to V11.1.2.2 from 9.3. In system 9 to see a list of sessions we used EAS and did a Edit Session on the server to get a list and it worked fine, but in System 11 the behavior of Edit sessions is different. Whenever we did Edit sessions it took the Essbase in a funky state which doesnt recover even when we kill all the ESSSVR sessions in the backend., ultimately we have to restart Essbase to bring it back up. We thought it could be an EAS issue and instead used MAXL command to list the sessions, "display sessions on application Sample;" and it was the same behavior as it has happened while displaying sessions from EAS which tells me its the Essbase function thats doing the harm.
Does anyone had seen this behavior with Version 11 or V11.1.2.2 specifically? FYI we are hosting Essbase on 64 Bit AIX. Is there tuning options that could resolve this issue? Any feedback is appreciated.
    Thanks!
    @MJ

Turned out be an issue in EAS server on linux which oracle addressed with a patch.

  • Data Load behaviour in Essbase

    Hello all-
I am loading data from Flat File using a server Rule File. In the rule file i have properties for a feild where in it replaces a name in flat file for member name in outline so it is somwhat like this:
    Replace With
    Canada 00-200-SE
    Belgium 00-300- SE
    and so on
Now in my flat file there was a new member for example china & the replacement for it was not present in Rule File & when the data was loaded in the system it didnt rejected that record on the contrary it loaded the values for china in
the region which was above it and overwrited the values for the original one.
Is this the normal behavior of essbase , I was thinking that record should have been rejected .
I know when we do a Lock & Send via Addin & if member is not present in outline it give you warning when you lock that sheet & eventually if you dont delete that member from the template it will load data against it in the member above it.
Is there a waok around for this problem or this is what it is ?
I am on Hyperion Planning / Essbase Version 9.3.1.
    Thanks

Still thinking how does these properties effects the way data is being loaded right now. Have gone through DBAG & i dont see a reason y any of these peoperties might be affecting the load^^^Here's what I think is happening: China is not getting mapped, but the replacement for Belgium is occuring and resolves to a valid member name. Essbase sees China and doesn't recognize it (you knew all of this already).
When the load occurs, Essbase says (okay, I am anthromorphizing, but you get the ida) "Eh, I have no idea what China is, but 00-300-SE is the last good Country member I have, I will load there." Essbase is picking the last valid member and loading to that. I liken it to a lock and send from Excel with nested dimensions and non-repeating members. Essbase "looks up" a row, finds the valid member, and loads there.
And yes, this is in the DBAG: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12825_01/epm.111/esb_dbag/ddlload.htm#ddlload1034271
Search for "Unknown Member Fields" -- it's all the way at the bottom of the above link.
In fact, to save you the trip, per the DBAG:
If you are performing a data load and Essbase encounters an unknown member name, Essbase rejects the entire record. If there is a prior record with a member name for the missing member field, Essbase continues to the next record. If there is no prior record, the data load stops. Regards,
    Cameron Lackpour

  • [ASO Calculation] Weird behavior of calculation in ASO

    Hi,
I have a strange scenario in one of ASO  cube (in 11.1.2.3 ) where calculation script (highlighted in orange below) written and run with POV set for all time periods results in expected values only for one period and for the rest results are not seen (we see only #MISSING). We have similar logic for other calculation and it seems to have worked fine. I am puzzled now as to why the calculation (with similar logic) work for all periods in one script and doesnt in other script. What is preventing results to be seen across all periods ? We have tried
    (a) slice merge - NO CHANGE, (b) clear partial data > re-run calc >  slice merge - NO CHANGE. We have run out of options now and have no clue as to what is triggering this strange behavior in ASO ? Is this a bug ?
    =========================================================================================================================
Here even-though we have POV set for all periods, the result is only seen on Oct-15 and not for other periods. When we do manual calculation in Excel, we see result but from the cube we get only #Missing.
    CALCULATION RESULTING IN PARTIAL RESULT:
         [L0_S/S COS per Day] := (([AC_ZZ5030],[DP_Z3100]) + ([AC_ZZ5020],[DP_Z3100]) - ([AC_500510],[DP_Z3100]) - ([AC_500520],[DP_Z3100])) / ([AC_991023],[DP_Z3100]);
    MAXL RESULTING IN PARTIAL RESULT:
execute calculation on database "WAG_FBI"."WAG_FBI" with
    local script_file "/u01/app/test/fmw/instances/instance1/Essbase/essbaseserver1/app/WAG_FBI/WAG_FBI/SS_DOS.csc"
    POV "Crossjoin({[Loaded]},
      Crossjoin({[Actual]},
      Crossjoin ([Time].Levels(0).Members,
      Crossjoin({[DP_15125]},
      Crossjoin([LOB].Levels(0).Members,
      Crossjoin([LE].Levels(0).Members,
      [Location].Levels(0).Members))))))"
    SourceRegion "CrossJoin({[AC_ZZ5030],[AC_ZZ5020],[AC_500510],[AC_500520],[AC_991023]},{[DP_Z3100]})" ;
    =========================================================================================================================
Here we have same POV  and similar calculation logic (only change being in the denominator and the account where result should be stored) , the result is seen across all periods.
CALCULATION WHERE COMPLETE RESULT IS SEEN:
    [L0_Rx COS per Day] := (([AC_ZZ5030],[DP_10010]) + ([AC_ZZ5020],[DP_10010]) - ([AC_500510],[DP_10010]) - ([AC_500520],[DP_10010])) / ([AC_991012],[DP_10010]);
MAXL WHERE COMPLETE RESULT IS SEEN:
execute calculation on database "WAG_FBI"."WAG_FBI" with
    local script_file "/u01/app/test/fmw/instances/instance1/Essbase/essbaseserver1/app/WAG_FBI/WAG_FBI/RX_DOS.csc"
    POV "Crossjoin({[Loaded]},
      Crossjoin({[Actual]},
      Crossjoin ([Time].Levels(0).Members,
      Crossjoin({[DP_10010]},
      Crossjoin([LOB].Levels(0).Members,
      Crossjoin([LE].Levels(0).Members,
      [Location].Levels(0).Members))))))"
    SourceRegion "CrossJoin({[AC_ZZ5030],[AC_ZZ5020],[AC_500510],[AC_500520],[AC_991012]},{[DP_10010]})" ;

    Regards,
    Sathish

I have no idea what the cause of your problem is, but a suggestion for a test...
Create a member (e.g. 'Calc L0_S/S COS per Day') in the same dimension as [L0_S/S COS per Day] (assuming this a dynamic dimension), assign the formula to it (instead of placing it in the script) then make your script copy from that member to the target.
I felt sure I had seen a defect that related to partial ASO allocation results but I can't find it now, so perhaps I was confused.

  • Related column of a fact table - SSAS Tabular

    Hi,
I'm developing a SSAS Tabular model using a SQL Server 2012 SP 1 installation.
For a fact table I've created some calculated columns using the DAX RELATED function. These columns not are hidden to client tools. When I deploy the project and I open an Excel workbook in order to connect the SSAS Tabular cube, in the field list I cannot
see the calculated columns by RELATED function.
For me, this in an issue and not a normal behaviour.
Any suggests to me, please? Many thanks

    Hi Pscorca,
Generally, if we create a calculated column on SQL Server tabular model database on SSMS, and then go to Model-> Process -> Process All and finish the data processing. Then when we connect the database in EXCEL, the calculated column will appear on
the Excel. In your scenario, you cannot see the calculated columns. It’s strange behavior. However we cannot give you the detail reason for this issue base on the limited information.  Please refer to the link below which describe the detail steps about
create a calculated column, then check whether if you missing any step when creating calculated column.
Add Calculated Column and Measures to Tabular Model
If the issue persists, please elaborate your production environment and the steps to create the calculated column, so that we can make further analysis.

  • Essbase Studio Performance Issue : Data load into BSO cube

    Hello,
Having succesfully built my outline by member loading through Essbase Studio, I have tried to load data into my application again with Studio. However I was never able to complete the data load because it is taking forever. Each time I tried to work with Studio in streaming mode (hoping to increase the query speed), the load gets terminated due to the following error : Socket read timed out.
In the Studio properties file, I typed in, oracle.jdbc.ReadTimeout=1000000000, but the result has not changed. Even if it did work out, I am also not sure the streaming mode is gonna provide a much faster alternative to working in non-streaming mode. What I'd like to know is, which Essbase settings I can change (either in Essbase or Studio server) in order to speed up my data load. I am loading into a Block Storage database with 3 Dense, 8 Sparse and 2 attribute dimensions. I filtered some dimensions and tried to load data to see exactly how long it takes to create a certain number of blocks. With ODBC setting in Essbase Studio, it took me 2.15 hours to load data into my application where only 153 blocks were created with the block size of 24B. Assuming that in my real application the number of Blocks created are going to be at least 1000 times more than this , I need to make some changes in settings. I am transferring the data from Oracle Database, with 5 tables joined to a fact table (view) from the same data source. All the cache settings in Essbase are in default mode. Would changing cache settings, buffer size or multiple threads help to increase the performance? Or what would you suggest that I should do?
    Thank you very much.

    Hello user13695196 ,
(sorry I no longer remember my system number here)
Before it comes to any optimisation attemps in the essbase (also Studio) environment you should definitily make clear that your source data query performs well at the oracle db.
    I would recommand:
    1. to create in your db source schema a View from your sql statement (these behind your data load rule)
    2. query against this view with any GUI (Sql Developer, TOAD etc.) to fetch all rows and measure the time it takes to complete. Also count the effected (returned) number of rows for your information and for future comparing of results.
If your query runs longer then you think is acceptable then
    a) check DB statistiks,
    b) check and/or consider creating indexes
    c) if you are unsure then kindliy ask your DBA for help. Usually they can help you very fast.
(Don't be shy - a DBa is a human being like you and me :-) )
Only when your sql runs fast (enough for you; or your DBA says is the best you can achieve) at the database move your effort over to essbase.
    One hint in addition:
We had often problems when using views for dataload (not only performance but rather other strange behavior) . Thats the reaons why I like more directly to set up on (persistence) tables.
Just to keep in mind: If nothing helps create a table from your view and then query your data from this table for your essbase data load. Normaly however this should be your last option.
    Best Regards
(also to you Torben :-) )
