Current Gen MBP Retina user-upgrade to Broadwell?
Hi everyone,
First time poster here.
I am currently in the market for a MBP w/ Retina, but it looks like the upgrade to Broadwell processors isn't going to happen until June/July. I don't want to be 2 full processor upgrades behind by buying a Haswell machine since the Skylake processors are probably hitting in the next several months, but really need to get the computer now since I've been without a laptop after my MacBook from 2006 finally bought the farm a couple of months ago. It's been rough not having an actual computer and having to rely on my phone and iPad alone. So, I'm wondering if the current gen of MBP's are user-upgradeable to Broadwell chips? I know that the RAM is soldered in and isn't user-upgradeable, but I'm wondering if the Haswell chips are also soldered in? If they're not, is whatever socket it plugs into the same and can the motherboard handle the Broadwells? I don't know a TON about computers so please be kind, but I'm technically-proficient enough to be able perform upgrades with step-by-step directions. Thanks in advance for your help.

2.4 ghz vs 2.7ghz MBP retina
Hi,
I was wondering whether with the new MBP retina the upgrade from 2.4ghz i7 to 2.7ghz is really worth it ($100). I do use some relatively power hungry engineering programs in both linux and windows 8 virtualizations, however when i run the virtualizations i generally dont have many programs open on the mac half of the computer. I also use a couple programs like wolfram's mathematica for data analysis. I don't really do much photo and video editing aside from some minor touch ups to vacation photos.
Thanks
VivekFor a $100, yes. It would have been nice if that upgrade also got you some more cache on the CPU, but it doesn't. But even so, 300 more MHz for $100 isn't too bad.
I always tell people that if the next component bump is within $175 to go ahead and do it (depending on what it is). Mostly always concentrate on CPU speed/cache size increase, RAM amount, and HD speed (from 5400 to 7200). In this case, you don't need to worry about the HD since it's an SSD.
I will say this. If you had to pick that CPU upgrade or doubling your RAM but can't do both, then definitely double the RAM instead of the CPU. More gain resource gain that way. -
I have a MBP retina display, early 2013, 512GB SSD storage& I want to upgrade it into a 768GB SSD storage, would that be possible WITHOUT replacing my current storage disks with the new 768GB ?keeping the 512GB&only adding a 256 GB disk?! please advise (:
The main error in this position is thinking ANY sized SSD can be "storage"
Any Macbook SSD should be idealized as a working platform computer system, containing all your applications, documents, and weekly-use necessary files; and all media files such as ‘big-data’ (music/PDF collections/video/pictures), unless directly needed in the near future, should be kept off the computer and on external storage USB or likewise bare hard drives.
You cant do what you want without removing the internal SSD
Officially, it is not possible for an end user to upgrade the storage in any Retina Display MacBook Pro model after purchase

Can I upgrade memory/SSD on late 2013 MBP retina?
I have late 2013 MBP retina, 2.4 ghz, 11,1., basic 4GB and 125GB. I checked with OWC and they yet to have any solutions to upgrade. Am I stuck with this? Wanting to do some video editing and afraid I'll be bogged down.
No. Neither are user-upgradeable in that model. What makes you feel you will be bogged down? If you need more disk space just add an external USB drive. You should have sufficient RAM if you don't try to run far too many applications concurrently for the memory installed.

I ordered the MBP Retina, will I be able to upgrade the 8GB memory ?
Hi, I ordered the MBP Retina and was wondering if I will be able to upgrade the 8GB memory to 16GB at a later dte?
Dougcheck this out
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/MacBook-Pro-with-Retina-Display-Teardown/9462/1#. T-DW56B6XnY the memory can (it ain't a party) be taken out but, the plug in configuration is a doozy. If you look and compare it to others on the street.
Good luck -
Sunce i upgraded my MBP Retina, it became slower than before when i shutdown. Now, it take about 25 seconds to go off while before was about 5 or 6 seconds. any suggestion?
Have a cup of coffee.

MBP Retina issues with ATV 3rd gen
Hi there,
I have been attempting to use airplay on my ATV 3rd gen on my MBP retina and have not been successful. All my other devices work (ipad, iphone) not sure what the issue may be. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!AirPlay in general or AirPlay Mirroring?
Is your MBP-R running the latest OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)?
Is AirPlay activated on your ATV?
Are your MPB-R and ATV signed into the same Apple ID?
Are your MBP-R and ATV on the same subnet? -
Duplicate Users Migration Assistant on MBP Retinal
Just moving to a new MBP Retinal and unfortunately now have 2 user IDs.
I had to stop the Setup Assistant and restart with the Migration Assistant. Instead of transferring settings, etc to the original ID, it required creation of a second, redudant ID. But all the settings, etc are in the secondary ID.
What do I do? Delete the second one? Transfer contents to the original one first? How?
Background: I cancelled the original transfer because doing it over WiFi was going to take an estimated 255 hours+ (not exaggerating).
After buying a $40 Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter, it then took 4 hours out of an estimated 1.5 <g>, but required the duplicate ID.
There is apparently no way during the migration/setup process to 1) Pause 2) select the transfer method 3) Cancel or back out and 4) transfer settings to an existing ID.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide some help.Yes, that is the unfortunate way MA works in contrast to SA. The first one doesn't have these issues since it gets the Mac in a totally blank state so it can create whatever IDs it needs. But MA gets an already preconfigure unit and can't overwrite what's already in there. So you can check and confirn that all your stuff is indeed in the second ID and then purge the first.
Only way for SA to run again would require reinstalling the Mac from scratch. And I've always had the niggling suspicion that the reinstaller will only put in the standard base system. Not all the extra goodies you get with a new Mac, such as iLife. (Note that in all my Mac OS X Macs dating back to the year 2000, never had to do a complete bare drive install. Always had the fortune of migrating and not losing any of my fast accumulating stuff) -
MacBook pro retina display ram user upgradable?
Can anyone confirm if the new MacBook pro ram user upgradable to 16gb or it has to be done at the factory?

MBP Retina or Powerful Ultrabook?
Hi, I've been a PC user all my life, but after working my way through the first iPod Nano, a couple iPod Touches, and now an iPad 2- I've grown to like the way Apple works. I'm finally at the point where I've decided to upgrade my 4-year old Future Shop sale Toshiba, which surprisingly has lasted me a good deal of time. However, I'm not a fan of the limited capabilities, the weight, and the fact that it very easily overheats (to nearly scalding temperatures), leading me to opt for my iPad most of the time. I'm a sucker for HD and quick boot-ups, so of course I fell in love with the MBP Retina when it was released. The only thing holding me back is the hefty price tag. Because of this, I began to research several ultrabooks and found that I could get the same specs (except for retina, but I'm fine with 1080p) and even a few bonus features (I would love a Blu-Ray drive and some accident-proof features) for half, or slightly-more-than-half of the price of the MBP. My favourite features of the MBP are the "little things"- fast bootup, magsafe, trackpad, and iCloud to work seamlessly with my iPad (which, i guess isn't really a "little thing"). I'm just not sure if these are worth the extra $1000 when I could just get an amazing PC.
I plan to use this computer in the following ways:
- Web browsing/ social networking
- Homework (university... of course)
- Entertainment (play movies, TV shows, etc)
- Some video and picture editing (I have a Sony camera which records AVCHD, which edits best on Sony Vegas)
- Running language software (i.e. Rosetta Stone)
So anyway, I'm not a gamer or a hardcore video editor, but I would like to be able to do some editing and video playback with clarity and without lag. As such, I figure I really only need the i5, so the base model of the Retina is fine for me. But again, I could get a **** good computer with i5 for much less money than the Retina, so I'm looking for reasons to sway either way. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
tjHmm...
'll readily admit, I'm a bit of an Apple head, so always say YEAH GO FOR IT.
However,
I'd say be aware, if you aren't going to use the power, you may be better going for alternatives, but I'll give you a rundown of some pro's and cons for your usage.
- Cold boots in 15 seconds flat
- can play 4 1080p streams at once without lag or framerate drop
- Photo editing on Aperture is excellent
- Photostream means your photos are there almost instantly wirelessly (not with the camera of course)
- Photoshop CS6 (when the retina patch is out) will look brilliant
- I had a photo zoomed out to fill half the screen size, of a whole person, yet could still see individual hairs on the head.
- Build, engineering, design and material quality unsurpassed in the industry (you cannot flex anywhere or make anything creak)
- Logevity, just upgraded from a 2008 Air - which was still going strong with no visible wear or damage/scratches
-Power, good graphics chip, switchable for battery life
- Video editing is amazing (on Final Cut Pro - which is Retina ready) you can veiw full 1080p with the interface still visible
Cons:
- Lag - on 'best for retina' its great, on 'More space' scaling, if you allow GFX chip switching, will cause serious lag - forcing the GeForce fixes this
- Other laptops will be great for your needs, and cheaper, but may not last as long
- The next generation in a year will likely iron out the lag issues
- Most programs are not yet retina ready - meaning they look... well... very dodgy indeed
I would say the MacBook is a fantastic machine and you will not regret the purchase, it will last you a good 3-5 years and you will thoughoughly enjoy it. It's an absolute joy to you and the trackpad and keyboard are brilliant. The speakers are also great.
However, you will likely get a notebook more than good enough for your needs, as you said, for much less money. If you can happily afford it - get the Mac, they are some of the finest computers money can buy. If it's a stretch - get a **** good alternative, you'll enjoy it equally and get great performance and some extra money in the old pocket!
Hope this helped a bit anyway - if you have any questions, ask away, more than happy to help -
For quite a few months I monitored these forums to see how the new retina MBP would go over. I do know that forums are usually the places were people with problems appear. Rarely do you get people showing up and saying everything is just great. So you need to take these forums with a grain of salt and use them to guide your decision making.
So I followed the heat thread, the burn-in thread and a number of others.
I'm a programmer by trade. I use VMWare Fusion every day and I often need tons of RAM. Flash disk is also almost required these days as I need to switch between things quite quickly. So when the retina MBP was introduced my drool production went up about a thousand fold! I've been working on the following models:
A 2008 MBP pro 17" with a core2duo, 4gb RAM and a 256gb drive
Sold that and got:
A 2010 MBP pro, high-res 15" display core i7 with 8gb of RAM.
In some ways the 2010 MBP was a dream machine. The 8gb of RAM made it possible for me to open 2-3 VMs under Fusion and the high-res display made up for the loss of the 2 inches of display real estate when stepping down from the 17".
The battery life on the 2010 sucked. I NEVER got more than a couple of hours out of it. I also noticed that even after a nice fresh clean Lion install with few programs and processes the processors worked hard. This machine got hot and burned through battery power like a million candle spot light. Still it was a great machine and I did millions of lines of code on that machine.
But since the introduction of the retina MBP with its 16gb of RAM and the big flash disk I've been making a mess of my desk whenever I visit Apple's web page. I was trying to temper that with a belief that as a first gen re-work it is bound to have some issues. So I'd go over to BestBuy and play with the machines there. I often got strange looks from the Apple Best Buy guy and I think he sort of came not to like me because unlike most of his customers I was in the system prefs changing settings playing with terminal windows and I don't think he appreciated what I was doing. I didn't care. I wanted to get a feel for the machine.
So last month I made a pitch to my boss to let me do an upgrade. He finally relented and about 2 weeks ago I placed my order. My MBP retina arrived on Monday. So right off the bat I need to qualify my statements here with the fact that I've only had mine about 3 days. Certainly not long enough to find all of the problems. But here is my impression since getting this machine.
I opted for the 15" retina, 2.6gHz, 16gb RAM, 768 Flash Drive.
When I received the unit on Monday I loaded it up with my editors, compilers, programs from the AppStore, music, etc. Of my 768 I'm down to about 210gb free which is plenty. I was expecting to use more.
The first thing I must confess about this new machine is how quiet the processors are. I installed iStat Menus which I like so I can monitor how my MBP is doing. With my 2010 just running a single VMWare Fusion VM had the processor at about 30% and the fan running say 3500 RPM. It was hot and noisy. This new machine, as I type this post has two VMs open. A Windows 7 32 bit, and a Windows 7 64 bit. I'm also listening to iTunes, I have mail, google chrome, calendar, contacts and a number of other apps open. As I sit here the CPU activity almost non existent. The rMBP isn't even struggling in the least with this load. In direct comparison my 2010 MBP would have 30-40% CPU load and the fans would be screaming away, not at full bore but really loud. But here I sit with this new machine and it is quiet, only very slightly warm and I'm doing what I "normally" do.
For this alone the upgrade was CLEARLY worth it to me. The computing horsepower in this machine is insane.
My unit came with (heaven forbid) the LG display that everyone in the "burn-in" thread says is HORRIBLE and some of these guys have gone through 5 or 6 replacements to solve their burn in problems. I don't doubt they've had these issues. I don't doubt they exist. I have none of them. This display is freaking amazing!
Now I've heard it said that the IR (image retention, ghosting, burn-in) can take weeks to appear. So I'm not out of the woods yet. But at this point in time the display is simply awesome and with the background I choose I see ZERO ghosting. I'll say it again. This display is freaking awesome!
Now I'm not a graphic artist and I cannot and will not try to tell you if my color point is correct for the white or not. What I can tell you is that this display looks good to me. I can read even the smallest text easily. The clarity is simply amazing. I'm 55 and have certainly reached that age where my eyes work overtime. I wear progressive glasses and I'm not having any trouble at all with the display.
The only thing I could point a finger at is that this new retina display is bounded by a black area that for my eyes is the same color as my background. I've found myself trying to slide windows into that area and being shocked that they are disappearing (because the display physically ends there). This is just something to get used to or I could set my background to be a little lighter. Anyway this is a pretty damned small negative if I must say so.
Ok on heat. As I mentioned above this machine just idles along 99% of the time so there is little heat being produced. I'm not doing nothing either. In my Windows 7 VMs I'm running compilers and when the are cranking on code the Windows CPU is showing 100% while the rMBP registers this as like 5%. Not sure I understand how that is working yet but I see no speed loss in my VM and yet my rMBP is just coasting even though Windows is registering 100% CPU.
The airflow on this new computer is to take air in from the sides and dispense the hot air out a vent in front of the display. I personally think this is a design flaw. I think this may be causing some of the burn in/ghosting issues because the computer is venting hot air right at the display. I personally would have vented it out the back beneath the screen but perhaps the latch as it is designed for the rMBP may make that impossible.
But as an engineer I have an idea for a way to fix the heat on the LCD panel issue. It would not take much to make a small plastic piece that sat in that hinge area and took the outgoing air and sent it to the sides way from the panel. I'm not gonna design this but if the heat really is the issue this simple $2 piece would probably save the panel.
So my take is this:
For me personally and acceptance of anything is a very personal choice, the retina MBP is exactly what Apple bills it to be. The best, more amazing laptop I've ever owned. It is cool (temp wise), fast (amazingly fast), small, thin, light, has an amazing screen visually and I predict this computer will satisfy my needs for quite a few years to come.
I will not berate or downplay the issues some have had. I honestly believe there have been bad retina MBPs. Bad screens. Heat issues. Failures. They happen and those people have suffered and I hope Apple will make it right for them. But I'm one to say that my unit more than satisfies my goals and intents. Like any piece of machinery it has its small issues. I'm sure my screen will have some IR. I'm sure my unit will get hot but so far it doesn't work even 1/4 as hard as my older 2010 MBP.
So my point to everyone is make your own choice. Do not let the threads you see in these forums convince you that your retina MBP will be problem ridden. Just because other people see and are bothered by a problem you might not be and the problem may not exist on your retina MBP.
For me, this machine is simply amazing. I can only hope my panel does not suddenly start to show massive ghosting. I do plan to keep a close eye on that and on the heat. But right now I'm not expecting issues.
Good luck in your purchase and also to those that have purchased and are not satisfied.I need to add just one more thing and that is on battery life. Last night I sat with the rMBP on my lap installing software, surfing the web, answering emails for close to 4 and 1/2 hours. At the point I took it back to the charger it still was showing a computed battery time remaining of 3.5 hours.
Today I had two VMs open and took the machine of the charger and sat outside with my dogs for about 30 minutes. During this time I was working in both VMs, editing and compiling code. My battery life estimate showed a good solid 4 hours.
This is roughly 6 times greater than what I had with my 2010 MBP and it too had a SSD. I am not sure why but this retina MBP just seems to not work as hard doing anything that caused my 2010 MBP to struggle.
While the battery life is certainly better than I expected it is clear that load can change that very rapidly. So I think I still need to visit clients with an external battery or charger in hand. But I don't think I will be quite so scared that my laptop will simply run out of power before I can even get it plugged in. -
Constant WindowServer crashes on MBP retina
Hi there,
I bought a new MBP retina last week and each day I am getting an increasing number of crashes back to the login screen..
upon checking the logs it seems to be WindowServer crashing.. I am on the verge of returning my pro - 9 crashes today so far and counting!!

Brand new MBP Retina constant kernal panics
I have a new MBP Retina with Mavericks 10.9.4 installed. I have received constant kernal panics since a few days into it. It seemed as though they were being cause by the io/logic boards, but those have both been replaced now. OS has been reinstalled multiple times to no avail. BSD and kernals blamed are all over the place (Dock, WindowsServer, mds; filesystems, AppleSMBusController, IOAcceleratorFamily)
The latest kernal panic is as follows:

I've got many more where that came from. I just don't want to post a wall of text.An update on my situation.
I had my macbook pro replaced with a brand new one by Apple, which was brilliant customer service.
Before giving back the old macbook, I decided to copy all my essential documents over to a usb stick. I also formatted my time machine external drive so it was blank.
Rather than restore this new macbook using my time machine backup, I set it up as a new machine and copied just my documents from my usb stick. I then proceeded to carry out fresh installs of software I regularly use but nothing non-essential (namely Spotify, Firefox, Chrome, xCode, Adobe CS5, Squidman, MAMP and Office 2011).
For three days everything worked beautifully - until last night when I had my first kernel panic on this machine. Nothing was running apart from firefox when this panic occured. The report is below and states the process which was running was 'plugin-container' which is part of firefox.
Below is the log output:
Sat Aug 30 01:51:53 2014

I'm running the latest OS X Mavericks - all updated to date.
I've tested the thunderbolt display with a friends MacBook Air and I see no problems there.
Any clues what is going on? Or it this latest Kernel Panic just a coincidence compared to my previous macbook?
Thanks in advance! -
New MBP retina late 2013 initial 29GB already used
Hello,
I just got my MBP retina late 2013, my first try of Mac from using PC for years. Out of the box I just did an upgrade, then checked the disk usage and already has around 28-29GB filled?
From the DiskUtility it is classified as "Others". I suspect this is the entire OSX Mavericks plus the standard apps? Is it normal? is it really this big?
I got a 500GB SSD so should not be an issue, but I still cannot sleep over it without knowing for sure if the 29GB usage is normal for a newly bought MBP.
Would appreciate your feedbacks.
Thanks!Quite normal - everything in "Other" includes the OS, any user documents, etc. -> anything that doesn't neatly fit into the "Photos," Movies," etc. categories.
For info on the Storage tab, see -> The Storage Display.
Hope that you enjoy your new Mac!!
