Current master socket in an adjacent room to study...

I'm moving house next week, with BT Infinity on order.
My master socket is in the adjacent room to where I'd like it to be. I understand the installation comes with a 30m extension kit if needed, but will the engineer be happy drilling between rooms, or do I need to do this before arrival, and if so, do I need to pre-lay cat 5/6?

After some investigation and more twiddling with trail and error. I found out that the cause of the connection was down to a loose master socket
From the image above, you can see I've moved the whole front facial to get access to the socket at the wall. The lighter shaded part was quite loose and I suspected when I put the NTE2000 in, it push the master socket back and did not make a full connection. To over come this I wedge some hard plasic behind it and put the whole unit back together. Of course I tested this in between with my modem but as you can see below the 3rd light to the right - we have the internet!
Now the next problem, did a speed test and i'm hitting 3.5mb instead of the 7mb I was hoping with this adapter. I connected the brown (orange - socket 2) wire in to see if that made a differance but is that what's effect my speed.

3 Master Sockets in the same room

So I have 3 Master sockets in one room (yes don't know why there are so many in the first place, previous owner probably) so I have 3 master sockets the 3rd still has the bt piper logo and the first one has the t logo so I might plan to move the home hub to the third one can I do that? the hub is currently connected to the 2nd one which has the openreach logo and stuff..

Its possible that only one is the Master, more than likely the Openreach branded one and the others are just asting as extensions. You can do that by just connecting the Battery, Earth and Bell Wire to the terminals on the faceplate of the other two NTE's and not the A and B terminals on the back plate.
I used to do it for a living and sometimes when I changed sockets around for whatever reason and didn't have a flush mounted LJU on me I would just do what I described above. Might confuse an engineer for the whole of two minutes but they would soon work out which is the master and which is the extension.

Master Socket Issue

Would like to take up option of Infinity now it's available in my area, anything has to be an improvement on my current BT rate of 2 Meg.
However the current master socket is in the hall and I want everything in the living room where it is now. I have read about the Master sockets issues and rang the Sales line last night and asked about moving the master socket.
The operatives initial reaction was effectively "what's your problem have the modem and hub in your hall" - I don't want that , I don't have the space. The next solution is the data extension kit - again I don't want a lead running round 3 door frames to get to my living room. After putting me on hold for a while he came back with the princely sum of £205 to move my master socket. I asked him whether there was any possible movement on price - No.
Anybody else hit this wall - I am pretty aggrieved having been loyal to BT Internet for many years, £205 is a joke.

Do you have any phone extensions from your master socket that run into the room you want the modem?
If so, then just tell the Engineer and he will move it for you, they don't charge, well didn't when I had Infinity installed.

Extra master socket ?

I upgraded to Infinity 2 last month.
My master socket was the old style without the removal front cover so I had originally used one of the 'doubl plugs' to connect to it and bring out the connection to a junction box which I then distributed around the house to sockets in every room.
When I got ADSL I removed all the unnecessary extra wiring and used a normal socket in my sitting room to connect to the router. I did tests and the difference in speed between connecting the router direct to the master socket and using WiFi was minimal and preferred the convenience of having it located near where the PC was normally.
A contractor did the Infinity 2 upgrade, I explained my wiring and suggested putting the master socket in the sitting room on the end of my wiring so the router would be near the PC and YouView box.
He fitted the new style master socket in the sitting room by desk as suggested but left the old master socket in circuit and claimed it would not affect the speed.
It was only after he left I realised that this meant I still had the horrible double adaptor in circuit so it was not hardwired all the way and the double adaptor is falling apart anyway.
I am wondering about just removing the old master socket and putting in another terminal block to connect the incoming pair to my internal wiring to the proper master socket.
Just kicking my self that I did not insist the contractor did a proper job!

Can't see why your suggestion would not work. Just try it - if it doesn't work put it back as it was.

Master socket conversion from plug in extension ki...

Hi! can anybody advise whether an extension socket kit installed by myself which simply plugs into the existing master socket (i.e. not wired in the back) can still be converted and used as the new master socket. I have the same problem it seems as many others with the current master socket nowhere near my computer.

Yes it should be able to, as long as its extending the master socket to another place (Basically yes?)
You can also ask the openreach engineer to run you a new master socket to where this extension goes. Basically they'll just run a cable where your extension cable goes, and then put a new OpenReach mastersocket there, so you wont even need your extension kit
I know BT are weird about only working on their own sockets, so this might be your only option, but the engineer should be more than happy to do it.
He'll just need to get some drop cable and just make the current master socket into a dud socket, and then put a new master socket elsewhere. (It'll be one of those unsightly Non sunken faceplates though, e.g with a backplate sticking out of the wall) so you may need to sink it into the wall yourself if its something that bothers you (Although the fact that you had an extension kit running along, i doubt it will bother you.

BT master socket help please

About 10 years ago when I still lived with my folks I decided to get broadband but as the pc was in my room it meant running a big long wire from the built in pc modem down to the phone socket in the hall way
So an engineer came round and made the socket in my room the master phone socket, now all these years later Ive moved out but now my mum and dad are having terrible troubles with their laptop struggling to pick up the router signal which has to be upstairs in my old room with the master socket and they have terrible broadband speeds. My question is could I myself swap around the master socket from my old room to a downstairs socket easy enough or would I need an engineer ? Im guessing I could do it with the right instructions as Ive seen engineers do it very quickly and easily.
Does anyone know of any detailed online instructions/video tutorials etc so I can do this please ? Ive looked but am struggling to find any.

Sorry, one thing I'm not clear about from the original post. Is there still a working socket downstairs which has been used as an extension. If so you may be able to just relocate the hub. Provided the wire is in good condition you shouldn't get too much drop off.
BT would need to see the socket to know if you've moved it, but if you have a problem at any time with your broadband you'll have some explaining to do and may be charged.

Relocate Master Socket with Infinity Installation

Our BT master socket is located in the porch / hall area with no access to power sockets.
When I upgrade to Infinity, I'd like the engineer to relocate the master socket to the living room (with access to power sockets, TV etc.). I'd also like the engineer to re-route the external wiring so that the wire enters the house in the living room.
Seems like a reasonable request to me – but I'm keen not to be charged.
Any advice is welcome. Many thanks

An Openreach engineer may reroute your external wiring but I doubt it if it is a contractor. Moving the master socket inside will normally be carried out no problem by an Openreach engineer but again if you get a contractor he will probably not or be reluctant do it.
Contractors are paid a set fee per install and as a result will not do any more than they have to and want to be in and out as quickly as possible. All you can do is ask at the time or if you want to guarantee that it will be moved, pay for it to be done.

New infinity install with a master socket move - w...

As I understand it, Infinity requires a modem plugged in directly to the master socket & a power point adjacent also. This is of no use to me at all & I would like the master socket moved. Now, from what I read here, BT will do this "officially" for £130, or on an infinity install, the openreach engineer *might/should* do it if it is straightforward.
I plan to run cat 5e cable from the master socket location, up a cable run we have in the property to the new location where I want the master socket to be located, leaving both ends unconnected. Then it should be simple enough for the engineer to connect at each end and then carry on working from the new master socket location. Maybe they could even use the second pair in the cat 5e to reconnect the original set of phone sockets we have around the house that are currently connected from the existing master socket.
Could someone advise please...
1. Is cat 5e cable the correct cable to use?
2. Does my plan sound viable? Is it technically correct?
3. Could the second pair in the cat 5e be used in the way I have described? Thanks in advance.

1. Should I run a different sort of cable other than 5e? If so, what would be the correct type?
2. Your very helpful diagram suggests that BT would surface run up to 30m from the Master Socket to the modem. My cable run would be much less than this. Would I be better to run cable myself (in my cable run) to be used as the connection from the master socket to the modem? If so, what sort of cable should it be please & does it need to have a connecting plug on the end of it (where it plugs into the master socket) or will the OpenReach engineer fit this him/herself. I guess if they surface run cable they will be able to attach the plugs on the end of the cable. What sort of connection is it?

I should also say I am not bothered if the Master Socket is moved, AS LONG as the modem & router (home hub) are NOT located adjacent to the current position of the Master Socket. I estimate the direct cable run required if I run the cable will be no,more than 15 metres.

Need help identifying my master socket for broadba...

Hi i am awaiting my line to go active for broadband but i just want to make sure the socket i am going to use is my master socket.
I can only find 1 socket in my house and it has a T logo in the bottom corner. This socket is on the bottom of my stairs (annoying place). I have opened it up and it looks like it has a capacitor on it. When i follow my wire coming out of the box it goes down a couple of steps and goes into another small box with a T logo on the front but all this has on it is a screw dot in the middle and another T logo.
So is the socket on stairs the master socket and if so what is this other box is it some sort of wiring centre?

Ahh right so it is my master socket but it must be older than the picture above as mine takes the whole face off and not just the bottom section and it does not have any test point on it.
Would it be recommned to update my socket to a newer one? I ask this as i was looking into iplates to help boost my speed but there not conpatible with my current socket.
And i need to put a extention into my living room is it best to just plug it into my master socket or will i lose speed this way?

Question re master socket vs secondary and install...

I'm seriously considering switching to Infinity but have a question re sockets. My current modem and network gigabit switching are all upstairs, coming from a secondary socket running outside the house from the master socket on the ground floor. I want to have the new infinity modem etc in the same upstairs room as now so I don't have to muck around with my existing network cabling. My question is can the egineer use the existing cabling and convert the upstairs socket without having to run a new cable from the master socket downstairs (as it would be next to impossible to drill through the ceiling etc without my partner killing me) as this is the deal breaker for me and Infinity? Request to resite Master socket-using external wir...

Sorry its a similar post, however these are my specific questions.
Engr coming this friday to install BT Infinty fibre service.Modem due tomorrow and Engr brings Router(I think).
My current layout is copper cable to house via BT Pole,to front of house first floor,then cable run down wall to lounge bay window and master socket is installed underneath/adjacent to bay window.(no power socket available nearby).
Lounge, hall, stairs and landing all recently replastered and redecorated.Yes I know I should had this lot installed first!
I will not accept Cat5 cable extension from downstairs to upstairs (clipped against skirting etc)and also fitting of a new twin socket outlet in the lounge.
We have a study at the rear of the house first floor where PC is installed with current Router, and sufficient sockets.
Will the nice Open Reach Engr consider the following,
1. reuse the copper wire to the house and cleat the cable run towards the rear of the property.
2. If the cable is not long enough, can he joint it-or is this a no no!(outside)
3. If 2 is not possible would he consider renewing the copper cable from pole and run it to my study(outside wall).
4. Will he drill through mortar/brick wall to gain access to study to run cable inside for less than 1 metre?
5. If he is not willing to do 4-Could I drill the hole for him!
I promise to make him unlimited tea/coffee, foot his ladder and buy loads of cake and biscuits.
If I am "kidding myself" please tell me!

master connects to modem, then modem to router, you can extend any of the cables that connect them though the best one would be modem to router as you can buy suitable cables in upto 100m length
I will be very grateful for a further update from you and other experts, this upgrade is really important to me, I am at home having lost my job through ill health 2 years ago and don't think I am well enough to drill a hole through the outside wall on a ladder with vertigo!-unless the installer refuses to drill the wall. I don't think my wife would sign off the risk assessment for me to do it! could always drill from inside, i always do, more important to have it in the right place on the inside than outside

No access to my master socket - can I still get In...

Hi, I'll try and keep this as short as possible...!
I recently ordered Infinity. The BT engineer came and couldnt install as he couldn't access my master socket. I do know where it is, as my brother-in-law and I wired up the sockets a few years back when we were refurbishing.
Unfortunately however, the master socket is about 2 foot below the floor-boards in my dining room, which is then covered with a wooden floor, which I cannot lift. From that master socket, the primary line runs underneath my house all the way to the wall at the back where it comes up into a modular plate with 1 telephone socket, (along with an ehternet port and 2x co-axials for sky) . From the master socked under the ground another secondary cable comes out at the front of the house and up to the front bedroom which services my phone and my second sky box, i.e. I need this cable to allow my sky multi-room to work.
From the master socked underground we ran ethernet cabling from there to the socket at the back of the house, so Im sure there are at least 2 pairs of wires running to that socket, possibly 6, (if we ran only 2 upstairs to the secondary socket)
Hope ive explained my setup sufficiently. Can anyone advise if Infinity can be installed on the primary line at the back of the house based on this information? Or let me know if I need to clarify anything else?

Problem is, if they put a new master socket in, my old master will be disconnected and the lines going to the back of the house and the bedroom upstairs will be cut off, and I depend on both those lines being there for both sky boxes to work, and also for my router to link back into my network wiring which runs throuhgout the house (again all channeled into walls and under floors so not easy to change)
Ill call BT tonight and see if they'll let me order Infinity 1 then. Even if my line speed is affected, I currently have their standard broadband (which they say runs at between 3-6mbps but it doesnt), its really slow, much slower than virgin adsl line which I had previsouly, but swapped to get BT sport free So any improvement on speed will be welcomed tbh

BT Infinity 2 and Master Socket.

Hello all. We ordered our BT infinity 2 and telephone line and they said the engineer will be coming on the 13th to set things up. After looking through the installation of BT infinity I found out that it has to be connected to a master socket. This is my problem.
My master socket is located right next to my main door and there is an extention socket in my bedroom. Can I have the master socket moved during installation ? Having a bt hub where you keep your shoes looks odd. Will the engineer relocate the master socket or change the extention socket into a a master socket or I shouldn't be expecting anything ?

Reading through some of the posts, a lot of the installation depends on whether you get a decent engineer, luckily I did.
My master socket was in a downstairs room and my study / office is in the room right above it. I explained to the engineer what I wanted / needed. He was a bit hesitant as he said it meant him having to drill through an external wall, No it won't as I already have a hole that talkes an extension from the master to the study, right easy he says he could convert the extension to the master and make the old master socket the extension. Great, cup of tea and a few hob nobs later job done.
If the engineer can not do what mine did he should fit a 30m extension lead to the master socket and you can plug the hoem hub to this, my understanding is that the extension cable is pinned to skirting or wall they will not lay kit under carpet.

2 master sockets and only one needed

The homes orginial master socket is upstairs in a box room. Downstairs in the extension is another master socket which was installed by my ex-employer for work related matters only.
The problem I have is that with the Home Hub 3 router being upstairs I cannot get Wifi in the extension which is the one place I need it. I'm trying to weigh up the costs of buying a BT wifi hotspot and extender versus moving the home landline line numberto the master socket in the extension (formerly paid for by the company).
Any advice at all would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum
Using one of the BT extenders would work out cheaper, and would not involve Openreach changing the routing, with the possibility that it may go wrong.
If you can use an Ethernet connection upstairs, then there are cheaper Powerline devices that do not have wifi capability.
If you decided to add wifi at a later date, then you can always plug in a wireless access point.

Where's my master socket?

Was delighted to find yesterday, on a random check of the BT site, that we've been fitted for Inifinity. First thing this morning I booked us in for the upgrade.
I know that the equipment will need to be connected to the master socket, so I'm trying to work out which one that is. Is there any way of telling externally? We live in a three-storey house, and there are sockets in at least three different rooms on the ground and first floor (and I'm not sure there's not more, we have three in the living room at various points...)
Anyway, at present we have the home hub running in the living room (1st floor) so that I can run an Ethernet cable to my Xbox. I do have a wireless adapter, so if I need to move the equipment down to the kitchen (ground floor) it's no big deal, but I'm just wondering which one it'll be, especially as my wife's office is in the top floor and I don't think she'll be impressed if she ends up with a worse signal for her work computer just so I can play games that bit faster

Edit: I guess it may be the NTE5 but you could also have the old style ADSL V1 dual socket (I know I had the adsl one for many years before I upgraded to Infinity)
Also the OR engineer can convert most sockets to a master socket so I guess you can choose were you want it to go.

Edit : Also if you follow the BT line from outside and see where on the outside wall it goes into your house there's a good chance you could match it to the socket on that wall maybe.
