Current recommendation for a hosting partner?

I found a good convo here from 2013 that yielded one recommendation, and a few stay-away-froms. But that was two years ago. Much can change! Who would you recommend for a good hosting partner today?
My husband's small business is besieged by what is likely a routing or peering issue at Cogent. Regardless, neither our host, Newtek (previously Crystaltech), nor our service provider are willing to help -- not that these situations can be solved, from what I've heard from networking pros and others on the 'net complaining about similar problems. (And by help, I mean having someone in their network ops group call someone down the line in hopes of getting the attention necessary to solve the problem.)
We don't have a choice in service providers due to his location. So, it looks like my best bet in solving the problem is going to be switching hosts. I don't want to -- we've been with them for like 15 years, no kidding! But... this problem has grown from something that popped up briefly once or twice in the morning to a more often than not we can't get to our services and trace routes die MOST of the time.
Vivio Technologies (viviotech.net) got the nod in the last thread. Any additional recommendations? Or, nightmares to avoid?
Thanks!

For some sites I host on the side I use Hostek and I cannot say enough good things about them. Uptime has been great. Support on a few issues I did have has been even better.
Avoid Intermedia.net -- their CF support is CF8 (maybe 9) and I don't get any indication that they intent to upgrade. I would also avoid HostMySite.com if your site requires any security -- specifically keeping up with O/S patches.

  • Any recommendations for a hosting site and photo album software?

I'm looking for a hosting site that doesn't cost too much. All I want is the ability for someone to upload images (perhaps sometimes large) to a site that I can download and edit, then re-upload. I'm looking at an open source software called Gallery. The hosting sites are totally baffling to me., however. Thanks.

No. Just wondering if that was what you were referring to. It seem like software you run on your own server. There are a number of sites out there that you can upload your photos to and share with others, no special software needed. http://www.flickr.com/ is one of them. Just do a Google search and you should find a bunch of possible candidates. I use iDisk for my photo sharing.

The banner ad will include a link, some animation and possibly a video clip.

Do you actually have any idea how this works? Seems you have not. Sorry, but there is no nice way to say it. You have to research the topic more thoroughly...

  • What current version of safari is recommended for Os 10.5.8?

What current version of safari is recommended for Os 10.5.8?

None. The browser installed with 10.5.8 is the last for that version of OS X. To upgrade Safari you need to upgrade OS X:
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

You are in the typical catch22.. you cannot use the TC without setting it up.. you cannot set it up without Lion.. so you can install the latest utility.
Do you have any reasonably current iOS devices.. they can run the iOS version of the utility.. that will allow you to set up the TC.
Or invite a friend with a laptop running at least Lion
Or take the TC back and get a plain USB hard drive and backup to that.

  • Looking for Hyperion Hosting Thoughts/Recommendations

    Hello,
I am hoping to get some opinions/thoughts about some of the companies providing Hyperion Application Hosting services. We are looking to move our Hyperion environment to a hosted service where someone could monitor the hardware, provide some services for Hyperion specific tuning related to the infrastructure and apply patches and upgrades. I know there is a service provided by Oracle and Secure 24 but any other suggestions? Has anyone worked with a hosting company and have feedback or suggestions.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Tiffany

I have work with Secure 24 -- they are as good as any choice in the hosting world.
Realize you usually are getting hardware and infrastructure assistance not a turn-key service who has deep functional application knowledge. They can all patch, monitor, and backup the environment.
Expecting them to be deep application experts is usually wishful thinking. If that is your expectation you should look for a hosting provider and a managed services provider which may be two separate companies.
Additionally I would avoid any hosting providers that do not have dedicated infrastructure/disaster recovery. e.g. If the hosting provider is relying on a Cloud platform e.g. Amazon EC2/Rackspace then I would look at another provider. Both Oracle and Secure-24 have their own dedicated hardware and DR sites.

  • Where does one find the Oracle Best Practice/recommendations for how to DR

What is the Oracle Best Practice for install/deployment and configuration of ODI 11g for Disaster Recovery?
We have a project that is using Oracle ODI 11g (11.1.1.5).
We have configured all the other Oracle FMW components as per the Oracle DR EDG guides. Basically using the Host ip name/aliasing concept to ‘trick’ the secondary site into thinking
it is primary and continue working with minimal (or no) manual reconfiguration. But will this work for ODI? The FMW DR guide has sections for SOA, WebCenter and IdM, but nothing for ODI.
Since ODI stores so much configuration information in the Master Repository..when this DB gets ‘data guarded’ to the secondary site and promoted to Primary…ODI will still think it is at the ‘other’ site. Will this break the actual agents running the scenarios?
Where does one find the Oracle Best Practice/recommendations for how to DR ODI properly?
We are looking for a solution that will allow a graceful switchover/failover with minimal manual re-configuration.

  • Best solution for multiple host tradingpartners

    Hi guru's,
I have the following situation: Customer currently has one department sending EDIFACT (over Generic Exchange) messages to trading partners. Customer now wants to add a new domain to the current installation, for a second department. Much like its possible in BPEL to have multiple domains.
Problem is that B2B doesn't seem to support multiple domains like BPEL does.
So I've been reading and searching and found the following:
    http://www.b2bgurus.com/2007/12/how-to-handle-hosttrading-partner-with.html
    http://www.b2bgurus.com/2008/07/handling-multiple-group-id-multiple.html
Problem with this is that message from the second HostTP will show up in B2B with the name of the 1st Host TP. Also, messages from both departments appear in the same reports, again with only the name of the first Host TP. Customer sees this as a workaround, and wants a straight solution with no interference between both departments.
I'm not sure if I'm correct with the above. But I think the only solution is a second B2B installation, in one of the following manners:
    a) Additional B2BServer in same oc4j container.
    b) New B2B oc4j container in same installation.
    c) Complete new installation of OAS 10.1.2.0.2 on same machine.
Amongst others, I have the following questions:
    1) Am I correct about the downsides of multiple Interchange ID's for the Host TP?
    2) Are the 3 options I presented all possible?
    3) Which one would be best? Which one is the simplest, least complex (to install, to maintain, etc)?
    4) What port conflicts would I run into?
    5) Can both B2BServers use the same database, with different schema's?
Thank you very much in advance for your time helping me out!
    with kind regards,
    Gerben Vermoen

Intersting question. Host trading partner with multiple idetntifier should ideally solve the problem from both back end application and Trading partner perspective. Are you claiming the issue is only in report where it shows the messages from two different virtual hosts shows as host one itself. Please let us know.
Can you please send a test mail to [email protected], i would like to discuss more on this.

  • Recommendations for configuring DSEE 6.3.1 to run as a Windows service?

Hi All, I need some recommendations for configuring DSEE to run as a Windows service. Currently I have CACAO, DSCC, and the Web Console configured and running as Windows services and this works fine. I would like to configure the directory itself to run as a Windows service so that it will restart automatically if the server reboots for any reason. Using dsadm enable-service --type WIN_SERVICE I configured this but initial testing indicated that the service will fail to start automatically on reboot. I can start it manually once the server is rebooted. This appears to indicate a dependancy of some sort with one of the other services like CACAO or DSCC but I did not see any documentation on this. Does anyone know the appropriate way to configure the directory to run as a Windows service? Thanks.

  • Recommendations for LMS - focus on exams

I'm looking for recommendations for a LMS mainly for scoring exams.  We're currently producing course material and exams with Captivate 4 and using the LMS component of Connect Pro.  We've run into numerous issues with applying time limits and preventing cheating (through the cumulative score display) in our current system.  In Captivate, it looks like we have a lot more options if we publish to a different LMS.  We prefer to  host things ourselves and have a strong IT staff and development team for deployment and customization.  Thanks.

Inquisiq (http://www.inquisiqr3.com) is worth a look - SaaS or Installed, various pricing models, pretty full-featured but can certainly be used for just test results. No interaction reports available to those without permissions...
(disclaim: I work with these folks)
Moodle and Sakai, of course, are two Free LMS products that may suite you just fine, especially if you've a strong IT and dev group, and even moreso if they've a taste for open source products.
Articulate, I believe, has a hosted tracking system for their QuizMaker products. I've not looked into it, and not sure if it's available 'installed', but either way may be a fast solution. QuestionMark Perception has a similar thing, I think I've heard, but also heard their pricing is...challenging.
    Helps?
