Current situation for DVD to FCPX since MPEG2 components are gone

I have family videos converted to DVDs with varying degrees of compression.  Apparently the recommended approach to importing DVD's into FCPX was to use MPEG Streamclip, with the MPEG2 quicktime components.
My DVD's play fine using VLC or DVD Player, but MPEG Streamclip complains "File open error: unsupported file type" and the MPEG2 components for quicktime no longer seem to be for sale on Apple's website.
I found a product called VOBMerge that's supposed to combine the different VOBs into one file with the MPEG2 encoding, but perhaps I don't understand the layout or nature of VOB files, or the order I'm supposed to put them in, because the resulting combined file didn't play.  (Some of the VOBs play individually with VLC, but some don't, so I don't understand that either...)
What does work is using Handbrake to convert the disk to h.264 encoding.  Handbrake will also (very quickly) convert the disk to MPEG2 codec, but FCPX shows me a blue screen and some audio if I import the MPEG2 file.  Converting to MPEG4 codec using handbrake doesn't seem to work at all.
It seems that if the MPEG2 components for quicktime were still available, I could maybe use vobmerge or handbrake to make MPEG2 files quickly and easily off of my DVDs, and then view them into FCPX.  But, since the MPEG2 components do not seem to be available, is my best option converting to H.264?  Or is there some other codec I should use?  Handbrake only offers three codecs.
What about using VLC or FFMPEG to stream directly out to some other format that FCPX can read?

For future readers of this thread, I'm going to post the links and instructions.  From MPEG Streamclip: I think we should assume these instructions about refusing to install (yet still being required) still apply for Mavericks:
"The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion and Mountain Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion and Mountain Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion or Mountain Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b8 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component M. Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion or Mountain Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion and Mountain Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion and Mountain Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7."
This is the component, it says:
"Note:
On OS X Lion and later, MPEG-2 playback functionality is built into QuickTime X. The QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component is not required and cannot be installed."
but apparently it's still required and can be installed if you do it right.

When I opened iphoto this morning all my photos since April 2013 are gone. My desktop picture is still current but I can't find my pictures.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run  Option #4 to rebuild the database
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager (iPhoto 8 or earlier or IPhoto 11 and later) and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the
File ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 8 or earlier)
    or
Library ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 9 or later)
menu option to rebuild the library. Select the checkbox to include orphaned photos.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • For some reason my itunes and safari are gone any way to get the back, iphone4

For some reason my i tunes app and safari are gone on my iphone4, is there anyway to get them back? thanks

Impossible for any of the included apps to be deleted from the iPhone, which includes the iTunes app and Safari.
    Settings > General > Restrictions.
If Restrictions is enabled, is Safari and iTunes turned on as a restriction? If so, turn these off.

  • Current situation for 945GM and below users -- downgrade only option?

I'm running ArchLinux on an Acer 5610-4610(Intel 945GM, 950GMA), and I've almost(...*almost*) gotten used to seeing mesa, xorg-server, and such being on the pacman ignore notification when I update(I can't use the latest xf86-video-intel and therefore the latest dependencies an utterly handicapping reduction in performance), and this recent fiasco I've had with the transition to hotplugging makes matters even worse.
Staying with downgraded xorg-server means ignoring evdev and such upgrades, I would imagine, so my question is this: is my only option until kernel-2.6.29 is released(a month 1/2 from now?) to keep this growing number of packages downgraded to retain usability on ArchLinux?

Could you elaborate on your problems? Why you can't use the latest Intel drivers? Do they have a bug that prevents you from using them? Is the bug an upstream one or Arch specific? Arch is not even using the latest, but the 2.4.x series.
And you say that staying with the old packages is utterly handicapping performance for you? You mean that if you do upgrade your packages you get much better performance but also some showstopper bug?
I have two desktops with an Intel IGP and don't have any problems. One has the latest G45 chipset and the other an old 845G one. Also a laptop with GM965 has no problems, but that one's running Ubuntu, not Arch.

Hello, my name is Octavia Hall. I was on the computer and I was just trying to sync/backup all of my games so that way, if I accidentally delete on of my game(s), then i would go on the computer and get it back. Now, for some reason, my games are now gone, how do I get them back?

Did you set up your phone to sync Contacts with iCloud? If not sure, you can log in to https://www.icloud.com and see if your contacts are there.

  • I just enable icloud backup for my contacts and now my contacts are gone. I sthis just another new operating software problem.

I udated to the new operating system about one week ago. Not too many problems at first.
Yesterday, for no reason, I lost all of my bookmarks in Safari. Now it won't even let me do book marks at all.
With this in mind, I thought I should probably enable Icloud to backup my Contacts.  Big mistake ......Now every thing that was in my contacts is gone.
I can't tell you how upset I am.  I hope there is a fix for this and soon.

You can always resync the Contacts, Notes, and Messages by signing into those services with the same AppleID once you have the new phone set up.

Restore from your back up is the most obvious way forward.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. It can take 3 or 4 goes for this to work

  • FCPX DVD export to Compressor: error burning disc; video file incompatible for DVD creation

I've been working on a project for months now (feature film) in Final Cut Pro X. Therefor I have done about 20 exports already from within FCPX to Compressor for DVD. Did the same process last night as always.
From within project timeline I go to SHARE -> DVD -> setup a basic menu then select USING COMPRESSOR
Compressor opens. I click submit and after the progress indicator fills up way too fast, I get this error:
"there was an error burning your disc the video file is incompatible for DVD creation"
DVD spits out and that's it. Compressor and FCPX are both still running and haven't crashed but I'm confused. I have burned since the recent 10.0.3 upgrades (and whichever upgrade just came out for Compressor as well) so I can't imagine it's the upgrade.
    Any ideas?
I tried making a duplicate of the project and renaming and exporting and had the same results.
At this moment I am trying to export to DVD directly from FCPX with default settings and it has bee "processing" with no movemtn on the progress bar for an hour (it's a 2 hour video so this may not be abnormal).

Could someone please advise on my current problem? Apparantly I can no longer download tones to my phone or account to be used as such since the tones are being downloaded as songs that cannot be transferred or placed in the tones area for the phone or in iTunes. Prior to the last update, this was always an option. I have also noticed that the Ringtones and Alert Tones are not showing up in my recent purchases as well to allow for me to place them back on my phone and there for require for them to be purchased again... Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've discovered that all tones purchased will be downloaded as ringtones, BUT they can be utilized as tones and assigned as alert tones on the iPhone...

I've downloaded current update for iPad 2 but it won't install. It keeps coming up as an error. I have deleted many apps but didn't help the situation... What's causing this and how do I fix this?

What is the latest iOS for iPad 2? Is it iOS 7 or can you update to 8?
all I remember is that my iPad mini performed poorly under iOS 7. Try to update it to the very latest version. Also you will have to use iOS 8.1.3, because 8.1.2 is no longer signed in case you were trying to install that. You can get the latest IPSW from http://IPSW.me just enter in your device and it will forward you to the right Apple ios download link.
Another thing is keeping your device memory free, if you have a 16 gig device, it's harder to keep space free. my iPad mini is 16 gig, but all I can ever keep free is 1 GB so I keep it at that. Turn off "iCloud photo sharing beta" and that will help a little bit. also when you do a restore from iTunes, don't restore your backup right away, see how it performs fresh, and then add your apps back in one at a time you might have to sacrifice photos and other personal things for performance.

  • Encode for DVD: AC3 + MPEG2 are different lengths

I'm using Compressor's DVD:Best Quality:90 Minutes setting to encode a 30 minute NTSC 29.97 Self-Contained Quicktime for DVD. I bring the AC3 and MPEG2 files into DVDSP, and the MPEG2 is longer than the AC3 by several seconds.
I'm flummoxed. Any ideas what might be going on here?

Aha! I didn't have the Drop Frame box checked in the SD Encoding Preferences for DVDSP. I checked the box, and the duration now matches. You are a champ, thanks.

  • FCPX Export mpeg2 ???

Hi, Can you export mp2s from fcpx latest edition? When i export DVD to hard drive i get an img file that is useless. That's the only way I would have thought you could get an mpeg2. Thanks, joe

The img file is what you would use to burn the DVD. In Disk Utility, if you have a DVD Recorder, you would Burn the IMG to the DVD blank media. I, however, would recommend Toast as a better workflow for this process.
You can mount the IMG file and you can use DVD Player (located in your Applications folder) to play the media as if it were a real DVD.  Just File > Open DVD Media and find the VIDEO_TS folder to open.
Specifically, the VOB files are the actual video files. They are typically MPEG2 program streams and there are several VOB files since the streams are broken down into "chunks". The IFO and BUP files are information files that help the DVD player to play the disc (not necessarily just the video.) The BUP is a backup of the IFO file in case something happens to the IFO (scratch, corruption, etc.) Everything used by a video DVD is placed within the VIDEO_TS folder. The AUDIO_TS folder is not used for video DVDs.

  • What is the best video converter for DVD to iMovie? Either free or to purchase.

What is the best video converter for DVD to iMovie? Either free or to purchase.  And one that is 'fool-proof' and very easy to use.  Many thanks, anyone who can advise.

You want to 'reverse engineer' the compressed mpeg2 DVD file back to something iMovie can use?
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:

    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.

I had all my old home video's and super 8 movies converted to DVD's. Since I will move back to Europe I asked the company to convert them to PAl system. I just got all the DVD's for a lot of money, but I can not play any of them on my MAC book.(I think that is because they were burned on zone 1 dvd's and my lap top works with zone 2.
I wonder how I can make them work on my macbook..? I intended to start editing those movies so I need to be able to play them on my mac. Is there a way to copy them to zone 2 DVD's and or to zone 0 dvd's and where do I get those free zone or zone 1 recordable dvd's?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The Apple TV 2 will play all the content in your iTunes library that your Apple TV 1 does. It can no longer sync any of it but can stream it all just as the older model did. Airplay is a different feature that lets you stream from an iPad/iPhone, the Apple TV 2 has Airplay the first didn't.
You can still sort and search content by genre, it still marks content watched and unwatched and mainly still lets you organise much as the Apple TV 1 did, with one exception. It doesn't do nested folders, so the ability to tag a movie as a show (ie James Bond) and have all the associated movies in a James bond folder has gone and it lists all these movies individually.
It has a similar situation with TV shows. It will put all TV shows in a series in a folder as the older one did, but the new one lists each series separately whereas the older model would put all the series in one folder.
Not nesting folders is a bit of a pain with large libraries and whilst I don't like it, it's more or less the only compromise I have to make and of course I get additional features too.
