Current uses for a G5 PowerPC dual 2GHz

Hi guys.  I just undercovered an old silver G5, think it has 10.4 or 10.5 on it, with dual 2GHz PowerPC processors in it.  I know it's real old and can't really do much, but what would be some practical things I could use it for in a business environment.  Would it run a USB scanner?  Or what else can you think of?   Hate to just let it rust up sitting in storage.

Hello,
I use a G5 as my main computer at work still.
If the Scanner doesn't have drivers for your OSX version there's always VueScan...

TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions...

SeaMonkey seems pretty fast also, with many options...

    You need an HDMI switch.

If you don't have a credit card then you might be able to use iTunes gift cards instead - that's what I currently use for purchases. You might be getting the 'billing problem' message due to it being a debit card, which as I said I don't think are still accepted - you might want to contact iTunes Support via the link that I gave to confirm one way or the other if that is the case.

  • What is make/model of modem currently used for telstra ultimate super boost cable internet

They have two models of modem for Cable 3.0 Internet currently, the CG3100 and the C6300BD, the CG3100 is the standard gateway, the C6300BD is the Max or the premium model. Both are capable with the Super Faster Speed Boost and able to provide speed of up to 100/2Mbps.

Hello The Good News is that I can guarantee the  CG6300 will go to 112 mb/s   and the CG3100  118 mb/s  (cable permitting, of course) The CG6300 will rarely drop a connection. Best wishes

  • Advice on upgrading G5 PPC dual 2GHz to run Adobe CS5 and more

Currently running a PowerPC dual 2GHz G5 Mac with 1GB RAM, 160GB HD and OSX 10.4.11. My company is going to upgrade to Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 which requires Intel-base machines. We have 10 desktops that need upgrading but a limited budget. Which Intel Mac would you recommend for running CS5.5, QuarkXPress 7.5, MSOffice2011, FileMaker Pro 9? What have been the issues with Snow Leopard and has there been any stability surrounding it? Thanks in advance!

Oh well with $40k you're going to be just fine.
The 27" iMac with the following specs is only $2,718.
    2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    2TB Serial ATA Drive
    8x double-layer SuperDrive
    ATI Radeon HD 5750 1GB GDDR5 SDRAM
Apple Wireless Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
    Magic Mouse
AppleCare Protection Plan for iMac - Auto-enroll
Should easily be enough to do what you want. If you think you might want to up the RAM a bit then 16GB of RAM would only raise the price to $3,118. These all of course include the AppleCare on them as well.
Then if you wanted to add a couple laptops for portability then they are of a similar price as well.
Think about it a bit though. 21.5" iMac's could probably do you well enough running the i5 and are a bit cheaper at around $2,218 a unit.
Mac Mini's are much, much weaker in specs and you would also have to buy a monitor for all of them (Around $100-$200 for a decent one) with a price in the range of $1300.
I would suggest some 21.5" iMac's as well as some of the 27" ones keeping it around $25k-$30k in range giving you $10k+ to work with for software.
    Hope this helps.

  • Changing Processor for Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5

    Hello.
Is it possible to update my Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 to an Intel or other processor?  Of course, I'm finding that my machine is not being supported by software developers anymore, which is very frustrating. I've got a great machine that I love, but it needs to have a future!
What are my options?  Thanks in advance to all you for your help.
I'm running 10.5.8 on my Power Mac (June 2004).

    No upgrade path at all.
    No way, no how.
The only way to get Intel processors is to buy a new machine that uses them.

  • Dual 2ghz powerPC mac g5 up grade option?

What are my possible uprgade option with with the dual 2GHZ powerPC mac g5?
I have not bought one yet becuase I want to find the best computer to meet my needs as a video/film editor.
I have a bugget of 2200$ and already have a two lcd displays, keyboar, mouse and speakers.
I want something that will give me the most options of upgrading in the future when I have more $$$.
I just dont like the restrictions of my g4 powerbook which is maxxed out?
please email me at [email protected]

As far as I now there are no processor upgrades for the G5 towers. You can upgrade the video card, memory, and hard disks. For editing memory and hard disk are the most important. I don't think you can have enough of either. I have an original Dual 2GHz G5 that I use for some light editing. I have it packed with 2GB of RAM (it can handle more) and 2 x 300GB internal hard disks. This has worked well for me so far. I have thought about upgrading the video card soon. I need to do some more research on this one.
People also make a bracket so you can add up to 3 more internal drives to the G5 tower. This way you could create a nice RAID with internal disks.

G5 dual 2ghz.  Been unplugged for a while. Powers up but no video or power to usb keyboard.  Boots up fine in safe mode, restart into normal mode ok. After shutdown, back to same issue.  What's happening?

I keep seeing people ask and the advice to replace if it has been unplugged, but really have nothing to confirm that from my experiences.
My experience is that a weak or dead battery can cause much more than date and time issues.
I have seen it time and time again.
Deal with used machines and you will quickly learn....
I'll give no "recipe" or set list of symptoms, but the range of irregularities that can occur make it a quick and easy first line of troubleshooting, especially when the machine has been off the mains for a few months.
Why fight mysterious maladies and troubleshoot with the knowledge that the PRAM battery is beyond it's useful life.
    Maybe they recharge?
Not likely. They are chemically nasty, disposable, one way discharge batteries.
    They aren't Lithium-ion batteries

  • I currently use a Time Capsule for my wi fi. I would like to extend its range and have been looking at boosters. Is Airport Express the best booster solution when using the Time Capsule or is there a better solution?

I currently use a Time Capsule for my wi-fi (2008). I would like to extend its range. While there are many boosters that can do the job, what is the best option? How is Airport Express as an option?

The Time Capsule (TC) can have its wireless network extended by another TC, an 802.1n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), or 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn).
If your TC is a simultaneous dual-band version, only another TC or AEBSn will be able to extend both radios. The AXn can only support one radio (2.4 or 5 GHz) at a time.

  • Dual 2Ghz PowerPC G5 Won't Go to Sleep

I recently purchased a refurbished Dual 2Ghz PowerMac G5 from Apple which already came installed with Mac OS 10.4. The first thing I did when I booted it was to use the software updater to install the most recent versions of the operating system. Now when I select "sleep" from the Apple menu, the machine powers down and my Apple LCD monitor goes dark, but within seconds I can hear the fans start up then slow down and the machine wakes up. It does this every time I try to invoke the "sleep" command. Does anyone know how to resolve this problem so that the "sleep" command works again?

Regarding USB devices, I have an Apple 20 inch cinema display (the new silver bevel model) which has support for both Firewire and USB ports. I detached the cinema displays USB plug from my G5 and lo and behold I can put the computer to sleep now. I was also experiencing system lock-ups before and all fans kicking in at high speed in which I could not wake up the computer and had to power the system down by holding the power button in. All these symptoms appear to have vanished after disconnecting the cinema displays USB plug from the computer. The Firewire plug to the cinema display appears to function normally. I wonder if the problem is in the display's power brick. The USB cable feeds into that brick before it reaches the ports on the display.
Anyway, thanks for the tip on the USB devices. My system seems to be operating normally now.

  • Highest OS my Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 can Run?

Can someone tell me what is the highest OS my Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 can Run? I looked quickly online to find answer but decided to bail and post the question.
    Thanks!

    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
    * Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
    * 512MB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
    * DVD drive for installation
    * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
You have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it!

i am new to icloud.  i would like to manage all our household email accounts through icloud.  i currently use gmail.  is there a way to route all gmail messages through an icloud email so i do not have to change my email address?  also how do i create multiple email accounts using the same apple id?
    thanks all.
    Mike

No, iCloud does not handle 3rd party mail, and Google can already sync to all your devices without any help.
iCloud accounts are individual, there is no 'Family' account. Open an account for each user, each will have an iCloud address.

I currently use an iPhone, an iPad, and a Mac computer for business.  The three devices have Contacts Managers that sync with each other through both Google and through Mobile Me.  Currently, this has created a mess of duplicate contacts.  Please advise me on the steps necessary for removing these duplicates and establishing a syncing solution that doesn't regenerate the duplicates.  There are several applications available that remove duplicates, but I am not sure which ones work or don't work.  I want information on this, but most importantly I want to understand how to fix this problem permanently.  Also, I read somewhere that Mac's new operating system, Lion, can help deal with duplicates.  I don't have Lion, but I would be willing to get it, if this would fix the problem.

Had the same problem with 4 devices (two computers, an iPhone and an iPod). The solution is simple: open the Address Book application in your mac, ask it to locate duplicate entries (under one of the top menu items, "edit" I think), and then ask it to consolidate them: it took me all of three seconds after I figured it out: worked like a charm! PS: if you have more than one mac with unconected Address Books, repeating the operation in the second one may be a good idea.
