Current VS Extra

I realize this is probably a totally newbie question, but it's been itching at me for the past few days.
Why is mozilla-firefox in current, while mozilla and mozilla-thunderbird are in extra?  Also, why is part of KDE in current, and the other part in extra?  This caused at least ten people to get on IRC yesterday and ask why they can't upgrade KDE properly due to the first extra mirror not yet updating.  One would think all of KDE should be in one repository to prevent this in the future.
I'm not quite sure how extra and current are decided upon, but it appears to be rather random, which causes far too much confusion at the moment (at least for me.)
Also, the Totem package has been out of date for quite some time now, shouldn't it be removed from the repositories and moved into unstable or something?
One more thing... in ABS, why is xfce4 in the root /var/abs directory?  Shouldn't it be in x11 or extra? (once again, extra causes confusion for me)

Unstable is for very experimental package that can foundamentally change archlinux functionality
Current/release
they contain the packages you find in the full cd install
release are exaclty the same on the CD
current represent the packages updated
extra are official package officially mantained by archlinux developer/mntainers but that are considered extra to the cd
both kde and gnome are in extra mainly due to their size, keeping them on the CD is very difficoult
Instead of them on the CD there is xfce. Its size is very little compared to kde and gnome, in this way using the cd you can install a full working desktop enviroment.
Why is mozilla-firefox in current, while mozilla and mozilla-thunderbird are in extra?
I dunno, probably to provide a graphical web client on the cd, I agree that also thunderbird should be in current.
Having the 3 of them is retundat, firefox/thunderbird OR mozilla
Also, why is part of KDE in current, and the other part in extra? This caused at least ten people to get on IRC yesterday and ask why they can't upgrade KDE properly due to the first extra mirror not yet updating. One would think all of KDE should be in one repository to prevent this in the future.
Wich part of kde is not in extra. KDE offical application are all in extra

Also, the Totem package has been out of date for quite some time now, shouldn't it be removed from the repositories and moved into unstable or something?
As I wrote the purpoise of unstable is another. When a pkg is outadet it is up to the mantainer to update it, old package version simply disappear.
One more thing... in ABS, why is xfce4 in the root /var/abs directory? Shouldn't it be in x11 or extra? (once again, extra causes confusion for me)
xfce is considere a special cathegory, several apckage that all togheter  (or part of them) give you a working "system", as well as kde and gnome.
if you go unde xfce dir there are severeal other ir each with a name of one of the xfce package.
In abs root you find the current cathegory, in extra (name of the repository) dir you find the dir name of each cathegory in extra.
Do not confuse cathegory name (x11, xfce, kde, gnome etc. etc.) with package name (kde-lib, gnome-lib, kde-base, kde-pim)

    does anyone now a good mirror for pacam current and extra?
    i live in sweden so does someone now a good nmirror how is fast to download from?

    Hi. I live in Poland. I'm currently using ftp.archlinux.de. It's quite fast and up to date. I was using ftp.tu-chemnitz.de before. Also archlinux.creativa.cl works (or at least worked last time I checked) very fast for me.
    The perl script above uses netselect package so If you don't like letting some script messing with your pacman.conf You can use It directly :-). You can try mtr too (it has both gui and cli and more or less combines traceroute with ping).

  • Apple please develop an app that will play the iTunes Extras.

    I have accumulated several movies from iTunes that have 'iTune Extras' which can only be accessed on my computer.  I only use my iPad and Apple TV to watch my digital media because my computer is desk top.  I am surprised that there is not a way to access these extra on my iPad.  Any ideas?

    We are fellow users here on these forums, if you want to leave feedback for Apple then you can do so here : http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html
    Currently iTunes Extras and iTunes LPs can only be played on a computer's iTunes, they can't be played on an iOS device - until if/when Apple develop a way of allowing you to play them on an iPad then you will need to use your computer (or first gen Apple TV).

  • Suggestion: Snapshot of extra repository

    From what I understand some people tend to feel that Arch is buggy or unstable because they upgrade or install some new packages without upgrading the whole system so they end up with inconsistent system (old and new packages aren't consistent with each other). The other case is that people upgrade while the packages in the repository itself aren't consistent with each other due to the fact that the repository is in a transition phase (some package is upgraded which requires alot of other packages to be rebuilt).
    Both cases can be avoided if we have a snapshot of the repositories along with the the already existing dynamic repositories, these snapshot repositories should guaranteed be as closer to being buggy free as possible. People who are stabitliy/security paraniods can always safely use these snapshots, same as with dialup users who want to install new packages without upgrading the whole system. The release repository already does that but the problem is that it's only a snapshot of the "current" repository. If we have another snapshot of  "extra" if would be great. We'll end up having "release-current" and "release-extra" along with "current" and "extra".
    Already most if not all the binary based distros I can think of have static repositories and no continuously updated repositories, ofcourse if Arch does as those distros do it will lose one of its main advantages of having the latest packages available.
    The "release-extra" repository may or maynot be released as extra ISOs with each Arch release.
    As with the repository undergoing a transtition there could be a field in the database file in the repository that pacman checks and warns the users if the repo is currently under a repairing/rebuilding phase, ofcourse the user sould have the option to continue upgrading anyway.

    My experience is that Arch is very stable most of the time. The problems with unstability and broken dependencies comes at the rare times when major packages have been updated, which also have many other packages depending on them, so that they also have to be recompiled, and so on.
    I propose one of these two solutions to minimise the problem. I prefer the first one, which is the simplest:
    :idea:1. When the developers suspect that a package update will make the system unstable, let them define a testing state of the system. Then let pacman refuse to update the system as long as the testing state lasts, except if you specify the -testing option.
    That way people who need to have a solid system at all times will have that posibillity, and those who wish to have new packages as quickly as possible can have that too, while they also contribute by testing the system.
    or
    :idea:2. Make a new testing repo, where packages are updated continuously, and set a timespan of e.g one week for packages to automatically be transfered to current, as long as no problems has been reported for the package update.
    Both of these waysofdoings would work almost the same way, I think, but I sort of dislike the notion of having a "stable" and "unstable" repo. That's too Debian for me . And this is still no improvement for those poor people with slow connections who want to install new packages into an old system.
    Of course I know that almost everything that can be said about these things already has been said, but I just thought that I should be allowed to say it too

  • At what process do DE shortcuts get created? Inconsistent PKG builds..

    I've only been using Arch for about 2 months now, but I've noticed some real inconsistencies with respect to whether a menu shortcut is created for a given application.  I'm wondering at what point in the package build process does this get determined.
    For example, the following programs automatically generate application shortcuts in the GNOME menu:
    K3b
    Inkscape
    dvd::rip
    Yet these applications don't:
    Acidrip
    K9copy
    lbreakout2
    stellarium
    I've looked through the ABS tree for differences in the individual build files, but I don't see a pattern that determines what does and doesn't have a GNOME shortcut.  Where is this determined?
    It would seem to me that any program which makes its way into the Current or Extra repos should also have the appropriate shortcuts provided for the DE automatically, if only for the sake of consistency.  Half the the time, I can't even tell whether I've already installed a program or not because there's no menu item for it.

    ezzetabi wrote:Considering there are lots of WM and DE with different format...
    I am the only one who thinks the packages should not create shortcut at all?
    It would be more useful adding an option to pacman -Ql that filter any non executable file.
    while it's true it's not standarized, .desktop files are nice and it's pretty likely to be more adopted, as it's a freedesktop.org spec (although then agin, I haven't seen a lot of implementations of their trash spec, but whatever)

  • Questions on running an Arch Mirror

    Questions on running an Arch Mirror
    Does anyone here run a public arch mirror that can give me any idea of bandwith they use ?
    Is there any issues with running the Current and Extra mirrors in the US ?
    Is there any issues with running the Community mirror in the US ?
    Mostly I would like to know what bandwidth consumption on a public mirror is for the mirrors that are normally used.  Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

    I don't think he would mind this info being posted... i emailed him asking for the bandwidth info for the server for a one month period.... an average.......
    - we dont have
    a record of actual data transferred, just the amount requested (which
    stands at 5440.17 GB).
    My server only allows approx 2500 GB transfer per month... so, until i can find a way to upgrade that, I won't make it a public server.... if i did, i'd owe WAY too much money at the end of every month

  • Can you use Apple TV together with an add-on cable-type box?

    We're thinking of buying Apple TV for our 75 yr. old parents for Christmas, but my father inlaw currently pays extra to view live soccer using some add-on cable-type box (sorry, no idea what to call the box).  We do not live in the same city as them, so checking out their current set-up before Christmas isn't possible.
    Will the two boxes conflict and could we run into issues with too few ports when we try to set it up?
    I'm assuming there will only be one hdmi port on the television (but then, I don't own a TV. I could easily be wrong). Will both the Apple and the cable boxes each require their own hdmi cables going into the television?
    Maybe the Apple TV will negate the need for the other box altogether. e.g., What if we bought them a major soccer league subscription for watching live soccer?
    Thanks so much for any advice!  If it weren't for the soccer issue, we would buy the Apple TV right away.
    Sandra

    Thanks so much, WC!  Glad to know they likely have more than one HDMI port (they just purchased the TV this past summer).
    Maybe the add-on box to which I referred would be some form of router.  Its purpose is so they can watch RAI here in Canada.  His soccer games are on RAI (for which he needs the router-ish-thingy) and also Telelatino (which he can get through his cable TV provider).  If he could no longer watch RAI, then he would simply not use the Apple TV gift, making it a dumb purchase on our parts.
    So, I just need some reassurance that he will still be able to attach this router box to his TV and also attach the Apple TV, or confirmation that he will no longer need that box if he has Apple TV.  I just don't know enough about that box to ask the right questions.
    Again, thanks so much.  I'm not sure where else to turn to find out.

  • A boolean that does not seem to work in an ifstatement

    hey guys
    im really new to Java so please forgive my ignorance.
    i am coding a program that is about vistors to a museum. I have a boolean in an if statement that is meant to work like this..
    If numberOfVisitors = 10 then it should set the boolean to true. once the boolean is true then it should print a line out saying that no one else can enter. the problem i am having is that its not changing to boolean to true once it gets too 10. here is my code. i was wondering if you could see what is going on
    The isFull is the boolean that i have set to false
    public Exhibition (String tt, int f, int max)
    title = tt;
    fee = f;
    numberOfVisitors = 0;
    organiser = "xxx";
    maxVisitors = max;
    totalFees = 0;
    isFull = false;
    /** Updates the state of the exhibition to show that one visitor
    * been allowed into the exhibition
    public void enter()
    numberOfVisitors = numberOfVisitors + 1; //This takes the number of visitors adds it to itself and then adds 1
    totalFees = totalFees + fee; //This takes the fees of the day adds it to itself and then adds 12
    if(numberOfVisitors == 10) { //If the number of visitors = 10 then it should set isFull = True
    isFull = true;
    if (isFull = true) { //Once it is true the string should be shown to say that know more people can enter.
    System.out.println("The Exibition is currently full");
    }

    As hunter9000 pointed out above, your code has syntax errors; are you even able to compile this?
    The braces "{" and "}" delimit classes, methods, and blocks ( including if/ while/ for etc ).
    Methods must be within classes i.e. after the opening brace and before the closing brace of a class.
    Similarly, statements and other blocks must be within the method.
    In your code, you have blocks simply floating about in your class, NOT allowed. They must be in a method. This is why proper indentation is important, anyone would be able to catch problem like this with just a quick glance.
    public void enter()
        {//opening brace for the enter method
            numberOfVisitors = numberOfVisitors + 1; //This takes the number of visitors adds it to itself and then adds 1
            totalFees = totalFees + fee; //This takes the fees of the day adds it to itself and then adds 12
    //    } //NO! You're closing the method too early. More content follows.
    //    { NO! You're making an unecessary block here
    //, reducing readability and potentially putting variables out of scope
            if(numberOfVisitors == 10)
            { //If the number of visitors = 10 then it should set isFull = True
              //opening brace for your if block
                isFull = true;
            }  //close the if block
    //        {//NO! again, unecessary block
            if (isFull)
            { //Once it is true the string should be shown to say that know more people can enter.
                System.out.println("The Exibition is currently full");
    //} extra brace from earlier
    }//close the methodClearer now?

  • Syslinux Installer / Update Script - Testers Needed

    For those who don't follow the ML that closely....
    Hello Community,
    Over the last few weeks I have been working on Syslinux support for the installer. With the help Thomas and Dieter I am nearing the completion of this project. As part of this project, I have written a script that will help install and update Syslinux (similar to that of grub-install).
    Some key features of the script: syslinux-install_update.sh
    * Install Syslinux to the FS + Partition Boot Loader (extlinux --install /boot/syslinux)
    * Install Syslinux MBR
    * Detect and optionally set the boot flag on the boot partition
    * Update Syslinux – copy files and execute (extilnux --update /boot/syslinux)
    * Support for GPT disks
    * Support for RAID configurations
    The goal is to include this script in the official Syslinux package. Therefore we need your help to test it.
    syslinux-install_update.sh -i -a -m ..... install Syslinux, set the boot flag (if needed), and install the MBR
    We need tests for the following setups:
    / + /boot on the *same* partition
    / + /boot on the *same* partition - RAID
    /boot + root on *separate* partition
    /boot + root on *separate* partition - RAID
    All of the above using but using the GPT partition layout
    NOTE: This is an alpha/beta stage script. The script modifies the first 440 bytes of the disk (using dd) and the partition table (using either sfdisk or sgdisk). Although the script should be safe to run, I am not responsible for any data loss that may occur.
    Let us know the following:
    * Did the script work for you?
    * What was your partition setup? (see above)
    * What version did you use?
    * If the script did not work, please provide as much information as possible
    Get the script here: https://gist.github.com/772138
    Syslinux Sample Config File: http://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/ … slinux.cfg
    The Syslinux package in testing includes the above configuration file.

    As Thomas puts it:

    In regards to bootloaders in core
    Pierre wrote:
    ATM. we have grub1 in core/base and install that by default. The problem is that this project is virtually dead for a long time now and also not available on x86_64. Technically it has to be in the multilib repo.
    Grub2 is currently in extra. Upstream development is still in flux. Imho its quite heavy and complex. An alternative successor would be extlinux from the syslinux package. It's very simple, easy to configure, actively maintained and reliable. Sure, it only supports booting from ext* and btrfs afaik but to be honest, if you use any other FS you should have a separate /boot even when using grub.
    http://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail/ … 18445.html
    Why I like it:
      * It is simple and easy to understand (see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … t_Process)
      * The devs are willing to help you out (they have helped me understand the Syslinux boot process and write this script)
      * It is modular in nature and the Hardware Detection Tool (HDT) com32 module is cool
      * Configuration is simple
      * KISS (IMHO)
      * GPT Support
    Disadvantages:
      * Can't boot from LVM volumes
      * only ext2/3/4, btrfs, vfat file systems supported

  • CSCtg82170: ip sla target port changes to 1967

    I've been impacted by this bug significantly. The sla's are used for gathering stats that populate a customer portal. The bug basically causes the sla to fail when the event occurs and there's no indication that it's occurred.
    For no reason the target port changes to 1967 which is reserved for IP SLA control packets.
    example:
    ip sla 778482511
    udp-jitter 10.197.197.253 15426 source-ip 192.168.15.254 num-packets 20 interval 300
    vrf xxxxxx

    tag AutoGenerated
    frequency 300
    ip sla schedule 778482511 life forever start-time now
    becomes

    We currently have extra monitoring/checking in order to get on top of the issue but a fix would be really great.

    We're having a similar issue with icmp-echo in that our source-ip address changes quite frequently in the running config (7201 rtr). The destination ip also appears to change when viewing sh ip sla configuration but not in the running config. We're currently running 12.4(24)T1. Looks like we'll be doing an IOS upgrade in the near future...

  • Hw problems or ext3 bug?

    Hi,
    This message is posted in "Workstation User" and "Kernel and HW issues" because I'm not sure what the problem is.
    I'm having a problem with ext3 partition and I'm not sure if it's a bug o what. It has happened 3 times yesterday (Sunday), before I switched off the computer at night.
    Situation
    * A computer (no laptop) with 2 HD (hda and hdd) and a few partitions in each disk.
    * Hdd has 1 ext3 and 2 xfs.
    * Hda has 1 swap (hda1), 2 ext3 and 1 xfs. The two ext3 are "/" (hda5) and /home (hda6). The rests of directories /var /tmp and so are part of "/", on hda5.
    * It's a coincidence (or not) but last weekend I made a "pacman –Sy; pacman –Su", and two of the packages updated were "filesystem" and "kernel". The pacman repositories I have configured are "current" and "extra".
    The problem
    After a few hours working the console shows the following messages:
       journal_bmap: journal block not found at offset 25312 on hda5
       Aborting journal on device hda5.
       ext3_abort called.
       EXT3-fs error (device hda5): ext3_journal_start_sb: Detected aborted journal
       Remounting filesystem read-only
    From that point, a lot of syslog-ng errors because of read-only filesystem, and also erros from other programs (xorg, kde, etc).
    Obviously nothing works properly. In hda5 is mounted "/", including /var and /tmp and it's read-only.
    The offset referred (25312) is different each time it happened.
    First idea
    Could it be the hw, physical error? It could, but when I've had problems with hw, there were lots of messages like "seek error", "read error sector ##", "seek complete error", etc.
    But in this situation there aren't. And the error is always in hda5, never in hda6 (also ext3) not hda7 (xfs). So I doubt it's a hw problem.
    Why not hda6? My opinion, hda5, root fs, is heavily used compared to hda6 (/home). The third time I got the error, I didn't log into any session. Only the OS and services.
    Could it be a bug, related to ext3, after the last upgrade?

    Please don't cross-post:

    Locking.

  • KDE 3.5.4 question SOLVED

    This issue was solved by just waiting for the mirrors to sync with the new kdebase 3.5.4.
    I'm sure I'm doing something stupid here;)
    I see 3.5.4 is in the extra repo. When I run pacman  -S kdebase it says I'm current (including extra) at 3.5.3-4.
    So.......I'm coming from gentoo so maybe I'm miss configuring something in /etc/pacman.conf? I currently have current, extra and community enabled and with pacman -Syu they are all reporting to be up to date.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    McRae

    wow,
    You guys respond quickly :shock:
    Glad to hear I'm not just missing something obvious - that's always a bit embarrassing on the forum.
    No problem waiting. Loving Arch so far though. Just hoping to see a package for e17 but I already see people with more skill than me working on it. Gotta love it.
    Thanks to both of you for your responses.

  • Lowarch 0.1.0 (Duhsala) released

    So, after a lot of work with compiling and tweeking, but also a lot of fun and learning, I've uploaded the first iso for the Arch Linux based distro for old computers, Lowarch.
    I have mentioned my project <a href="http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=26711">before</a>, but I'll repeat myself just a little here:
    How did I make it? The following is an almost correct simplification of the truth:
    1. I made a CLFS (Cross Linux From Scratch), with the help of the uname hack, to make a i486 build system on my i686 machine.
    2. I installed pacman and started to make packages for base. When they were finished, I installed them into an empty partition with pacman -r.
    3. After booting into the new i486 base system, I continued to make packages, in the order of dependencies untill I had most of current and certain other packages I wanted.
    This was not as simple as it sounds, since a lot of packages has started to be uncompilable because of changes to kernelheader, glibc, gcc or other libraries. This is where I have learned a lot about searching for patches and writing patches.
    4. I made a i486 version of the 0.7.2 install cd by compiling busybox for i486 and using the already compiled i486 binaries for other commands.
    What state is it in?
    It's not tested much yet. It works for me on my two i586 laptops and on my i686 laptop. I'll be glad if anyone wants to try it out and tell me how it works for them. I have not seen any indications of serious problems, but remember, so far I'm the only one who has tested it. I'd me surprised if I haven't missed a lot of bugs.
    Where can it be downloaded from?

    (Edit: New url: http://www.lowarch.org/iso/lowarch-0.1.0.iso )
    I'm making a webpage for it at http://lowarch.linuxophic.org  but it's not finished yet.
    (Edit: It's finished, but with a new url: http://www.lowarch.org )
    The online packages repo is uploading at the moment, but it'll take a while. My webhost's upload speed is 50kb/s. I hope the download is faster. Let's try....hmm. yes, a lot faster. Good.
    That's it for now. Hope someone wants to try it. Remember, together with the uname hack, it's a perfect way to get a i486 Arch build environment on a i686 machine.
    And, package lists etc. will come on the webpage in a few hours..if I don't fall asleep first

    filoktetes wrote:It looks like two people have downloaded the iso already, so now I look forward to get some feedback.
    I downloaded it yesterday to test it in a VM (useless, I know, at least it worked). I should be able to test it on Saturday on i486 hardware.
    filoktetes wrote:If you're interested, you could also help me out by looking at the  <a href="http://lowarch.linuxophic.org/node/6">package list</a> and give me your opinons on which packages are unneccesary on old systems, and which you feel are missing.
    I'm thinking about some WM that could be nice for older systems, like Openbox, Ion3, Wmii and such. From what I see, there's only Twm, Xfce & Fluxbox available, but hey, people can use PKGBUILD from i686 arch and those tiny WM are not so long to compile
    Speaking about packages, how are you going to handle repositories ? I mean, you currently have a "current" repos but it's not really following the default Arch conventions (Xfce should be in an "Extra" repository, "Current" only contains the base system). Any plans ? Something like :
    current-i486
    extra-i486
    ...could be nice to avoid i686/i486 incompatibilities in case someone wants to use mixed repos as you said in a previous post. And each package should be in the same repos as the original Arch to keep things simpler.
    filoktetes wrote:There's a category for that discussion in the forum. By the way, there's still a chance to get the first post in the whole forum. I feel the nice forum I made is like a big cake, and nobody dares to take the first slice.
    Should we report bugs/suggestions in this topic or use the dedicated forum ? What's better ?

  • [new x11/window manager] WindowMaker 0.92 PKGBUILD

    Here is the PKGBUILD for WindowMaker 0.92:
    pkgname=windowmaker
    pkgver=0.92.0
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="An X11 window manager with a NEXTSTEP look and feel"
    depends=('x-server' 'libtiff' 'libungif' 'libpng' 'libjpeg')
    source=(ftp://ftp.windowmaker.org/pub/source/release/WindowMaker-$pkgver.tar.bz2)
    url="http://www.windowmaker.org/"
    md5sums=('aaac5421b686ed2d3e6ab65229c98097')
    build() {
    cd $startdir/src/WindowMaker-$pkgver
    ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc
    --with-gnustepdir=/usr/share/WindowMaker/GNUstep
    --enable-xinerama
    # XKB keyboard language status support
    --enable-modelock
    # User defined menus for applications
    --enable-usermenu
    make || return 1
    make DESTDIR=$startdir/pkg install
    #cd $startdir/pkg/usr/share/WindowMaker/GNUstep/
    #mkdir WPrefs.app
    #ln -s Applications/WPrefs.app/WPrefs WPrefs.app/WPrefs
    I am currently running the package generated from this PKGBUILD.  If you don't want user menu's or modelock, then comment those lines out.  I have verified that the package can be built with such lines commented out, but I have not tested the package itself.  One item of note is that the path for the Preferences application has moved.  The last three lines, which are commented out, fixes this by linking the new location to the old location.
    As an aside and an observation, there doesn't seem to be a forum to post new PKGBUILDs for packages which already exist in the current, extra, or community repositories.
    It always makes me smile to see a package I helped create appear on the front page.  Hopefully I'll get to see this package on the front page soon.

    er... window-maker is in current. Isn't it proper to just flag the package out of date and wait for the devs to update it? My understanding was that packages from current and extra should not go to AUR. Am I wrong?

  • Gstreamer, the easy way

    Since I like to have a way to install all gstreamer packages, I thought others might like to have them all displayed and formatted for a quick installation.
    All you need is current and extra repo's
    pacman -Sy gstreamer0.10 gstreamer0.10-a52dec gstreamer0.10-aalib gstreamer0.10-alsa gstreamer0.10-amrnb gstreamer0.10-annodex gstreamer0.10-bad gstreamer0.10-base gstreamer0.10-bz2 gstreamer0.10-cairo gstreamer0.10-cdio gstreamer0.10-cdparanoia gstreamer0.10-dts gstreamer0.10-dv gstreamer0.10-dv1394 gstreamer0.10-dvdread gstreamer0.10-esd gstreamer0.10-faac gstreamer0.10-faad gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-flac gstreamer0.10-gconf gstreamer0.10-gdkpixbuf gstreamer0.10-gnomevfs gstreamer0.10-good gstreamer0.10-hal gstreamer0.10-jpeg gstreamer0.10-ladspa gstreamer0.10-lame gstreamer0.10-libcaca gstreamer0.10-libpng gstreamer0.10-libvisual gstreamer0.10-mad gstreamer0.10-mms gstreamer0.10-mpeg2dec gstreamer0.10-musepack gstreamer0.10-neon gstreamer0.10-ogg gstreamer0.10-pango gstreamer0.10-pitfdll gstreamer0.10-python gstreamer0.10-sdl gstreamer0.10-shout2 gstreamer0.10-sidplay gstreamer0.10-speex gstreamer0.10-swfdec gstreamer0.10-taglib gstreamer0.10-theora gstreamer0.10-ugly gstreamer0.10-vorbis gstreamer0.10-xvid

    It depends on the apps that you use. If you use a media player that use it (like listen in community repo), to play a certain file type, you need to have the corresponding plugin installed.  I assume that the advantages are that it's more lightweight and there are probably other reasons (performance?) that I'm not aware of.  Maybe the developers of  multimedia apps find it easier to use gstreamer than the default way.
