I currently have a large house wide wireless network and I am using a dedicated Buffalo HD with USB for time machine. The HD has gone bad and can't be repaired. I am thinking of replacing it with a Time Capsule. Will this fit in with my current routers etc, render them redundent ? I THOUGHT THAT THE HD I BOUGHT WAS OF GOOD QUAILTY BUT IT HAS BROKEN AFTER 2 YEARS. HOW LONG CAN ONE HOPE FOR A TIME CAPSULE TO LIVE (USING QUALITY SURGE DEVICES ETC) ? Does one need to backup the backups?
ALSO: Is ther e any way to back up from Time Machine off site ( mobile me etc) in case the house burns down?

Your best bet is to make your TM partition 2-3 times the size of the amount of data you anticipate backing-up. Put it first on the drive; that way, later on you can delete the partition below it, expand the TM partition, and make a new, smaller partition for SD (or use the whole drive). By the way, any recommendations on which peripheral HDs to consider? I was very surprised on a recent visit to my local Apple Store that they have a large stock of WD My Studio drives. I mentioned to an Apple sales person that I had always heard WDs were kind of a no-no among Mac users but she assured me the current crop of them were much improved. Any comment on that??
Most any drive will work with Macs, and Time Machine.
If you're going to put a "bootable clone" on it, be sure it's a bootable drive. Most PPC Macs can boot only from FireWire; most Intels can boot from F/W or USB. But note the disclaimer that they don't support it +*at all.+*.

I have tried re-installing iTunes, and restarting the Bonjour service, sadly there is no change.
earlier before i updated iTunes it recognised my iPod but said that I had to update iTunes in order for it to work.
So i updated iTunes but now it's not even showing the device anywhere.

Try updating your QuickTime to the most recent version. Does that clear up the DEP errors in iTunes?

Extend wireless network and use dns server

I need to extend a wirelss network with my Airport express
but I also need to the devices connected to Airport express to use specified DNS servers.
Even if primary and secondary DNS fields are filled it does not seem to work and devices are not using them
Is there anyone who knows how to "force" connected devices to use the DNS services?

The AirPort Express can only extend a wireless network if that network is provided by another Apple router.
So, the first question here would be what device is providing your wireless network?
Assuming that the Express is extending the network from another Apple router correctly, it is possible to manually enter DNS addresses for the Express to use, but it is not possible to "force" a wireless device to use the Express for its connection.

There are hardware converters that will convert HDMI to various other types of output, however there are some issues with doing so that you should be aware of.
HDCP
HDCP compliant converters will not allow you to watch HDCP protected content such as that from the iTunes Store. Non compliant converters exist but we cannot discuss them under the Terms of Use for these communities.
Resolution and aspect ratio
I'm not aware of any converters that will scale the output from the Apple TV, any TV or projector which is used will ideally need to be widescreen and support resolutions of 720p (Apple TV 2), 720p/1080p (Apple TV 3), although the Apple TV does have a number of 4:3 resolutions it supports, but these may not be available if the TV doesn't broadcast them.
DAC
Most types of HDMI to non HDMI connectors or converters won’t carry audio, in such cases you may also need to convert your optical output to an analogue signal using a DAC.

Yes, i can rename the title under the icon that is always there on the desktop (which I did) but as the mouse scans the icons a light yellowish colored box pops up near the Firefox icon that starts with "Location: C:/Program Files/Mozilla Firefox 3.1 Beta 3". This is the info that should now reflect V. 4. Is there anyway to change this? This is a strange apparition that sporadically appears and then disappears on its own without any intervention on my part.

The Difference between Extending a Wireless network and WDS?

I have an Extreme (n) and an Express (n).
I want to make sure the signal is strong upstairs and share a printer (connected to the express) and use AirTunes. I also may add an external drive to the Extreme.
What's the difference between Extending a Wireless Network and using WDS? Will there be a speed difference?

I think you don't get it
If I have another draft N router that operates at 2.4G and I have only n devices I can still use WDS and it will connect using draft n in the 2.4G band.
If one g device connects to the network will go in mixed mode.
The AEBS will still report 130 Mbps for your n clients and 54 for your g clients.
If the other router is g only obviously you can't connect between the two router at n mode but still the AEBS will be in mixed mode and not in g. The Extreme will still report 130 Mbps for the connected n clients.
I can tell you that because I have actually implemented it am not taking off the documentation.
The same device if I try to use the "extend n network" does not even see the AEBS but will happily keep the n in the WDS mode and though the bandwidth is halved it is still more than g.
In any case enough for this!

I have a power mac g5 that does not have a wireless card, and connects to the internet via ethernet cable.
I want to know how to set up an airport express so that it joins my wireless home network and provides the G5 with an internet signal.
This via an ethernet cable that is plugged into the airport express and then into the ethernet port on the g5.
Please advise as I have configured the airport express in every way possible, the green light is on and when I plug the ethernet cable into the G5 my network cofigurations shows nothing and says that the ethernet cable is not plugged in (It is).
I get an internet signal if the ethernet cable is plugged directly into my wireless router, so the ethernet port works.

Two requirements that must be met to do what you want.......
1) An AirPort Express 802.11n must be used. Check the Model No on the label on the side of the Express. It needs to be A1264. Any other model number will not do what you want.
2) The Express must be configured to "Join a wireless network" and the option to enable Ethernet Clients must be checked.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
The box to "Allow Ethernet Clients" must be checked
Please check to verify that your AirPort Express meets both requirements

Some updates and clarifications:
1. I already have my 2.4 channel fixed.
2. Wireless network name is 8 alphanumeric characters; no spaces
3. Already using WPA2 security with a 10 alphanumeric key (again, no spaces)
4. I am running Airport Utility 6.0, Mac OS version 10.7.4
I should also say that these problems started happening less than a month ago...prior to that all devices where working normally.
An added update: My two e-readers (nook ST and Kindle 3) are also refusing to connect...perhaps confirming that I have 2.4 GHz issues?

How old is that Time Capsule? The fact that it still have firmware 7.3.1 suggests that it's not the latest model. The latest firmware available for my two-year-old model is version 7.5.2. Apple does provide firmware updates. You just have to let the Time Capsule download and install them. Use AirPort Utility to do that.
Regarding your Wi-Fi problem, please explain what you mean by "it does not identify the existing wireless network".

You need to power off the modem for 15-30 seconds, then power back up and then connect. The modem is remembering the last connection (your friend).

I had the same error when trying to update my apps on my ipod touch. I tried to input my security code numerous times to no avail. I also made sure my billing address was the same as what my bank had on file. To fix the issue I went into iTunes, logged onto the iTunes store, went to account settings and reviewed my recent purchases.
